Okay, so, most of us probably need another eyeshadow palette about as much as RuPaul needs another blonde wig. Perhaps that’s why the marketing mavens at Tokidoki decided to up the ante by adding an alluring treat to each of their three impossibly cute Chromatico Eyeshadow Palettes ($25 each).
Bastardino, Adios and Diamante come with a tiny charm tucked away in the bottom compartment. Aww! They’re like Happy Meals without the calories, but instead of a burger, fries and soda, you get four coordinating shades with vibrant pigmentation. 🙂
Clockwise from lower left: Adios, Bastardino, Diamante
When the Tokidoki makeup line launched in Sephora earlier this year, I went a little crazy and picked up a few things, including the Chromatico palette in Bastardino. I’ve been using some of the other products, but the cute palette remained untouched on my dresser for all this time (I couldn’t bring myself to disrupt the pans!).
Lately, however, Sephora’s been heavily pushing the products online (have you seen the Tokidoki Me portal page?), so I pulled my palette down from its perch to finally give it a try.
Bastardino comes with four warm shades in a sassy see-through case with a cutesy cactus/dog hybrid charm. The shades themselves — a matte brown, a frosty pinkish beige, a shimmery taupe with silver glitter and a shimmery kelly green with golden glitter — actually work surprisingly well, blending easily and lasting through the day without creasing, and with minimal fallout from just the two glittery shades. I said “surprising” because I’d begun to assume the Tokidoki makeup line was more about packaging than the makeup itself (luckily, it’s soooooo cute!), but Bastardino’s making me rethink that.
You know how I’m a brush fiend, right? Most of the time I discard the little brushes that come with eyeshadow palettes, but the one that comes with these is great! It’s a tiny little liner brush with a small head, perfect for doing effortless soft, diffused looks (try it with the green shadow = awesome!).
If you, too, have been interested in the Tokidoki makeup line but figured it was little more than cute packaging, schedule some unstructured play time with the Chromatico Palettes if you can. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B+
The Cat Lady Chronicles: Episode 2,356
At Border’s the other day, I came across this $4 cat book on the clearance table:
I had to get it, of course, and when I showed to El Hub at home, all he could do was roll his eyes. 🙂
I don’t know why, but I’ve got major kitten fever right now. I desperately want to get Tabs a little sister, but I’m not sure he’s keen on the idea.
Anywho, how was your day? Didn’t it kinda feel like a Monday?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. New York MBB readers, if you can swing it, this looks pretty cool: Bergdorf Goodman’s hosting a beauty event tomorrow (there was also one today) with a Sex and the City makeup artist at the Le Metier de Beaute counter. It’s a brand exclusive to the store. I’ve been dying to try it ever since Lina from The Beauty Look Book guest blogged about it last year. If you can make it, please let me know how it goes.
Glosslizard says
LOL! That cat with the bow looks like she’s about to kill somebody!
Not to be an enabler, but SF Neiman’s has Le Metier de Beaute….
Karen says
Good to know!!
Alison says
Um, Karen, do you happen to be a RuPaul’s Drag Race fan? I’ve been noticing a lot of drag queen references in your posts lately 😉
On a more relevant note, those colors look really nice! I have been dying to get something from the Tokidoki line because of the cute packaging and funky vibe, but I wasn’t sure what was worth getting. Maybe this is my answer!
Karen says
LOL, I actually love RuPaul. He certainly knows how to WORK!!
Ooh! You want to know what else is good? The nail file, LOL! It actually works really well and it’s cheap!
Instant Karma (formerly L) says
YES RUPAUL
I’m still sad that JuJu didn’t win this season, though 🙁
Catherine says
Ooh, that palette looks so pretty! I was a little skeptical about the consistency of the shadows but now I’ll have to swatch them again. The taupe is really pretty… I do hope they come out with more palettes soon. I’m not a huge fan of the chunky packaging but I have to admit the charms are super cute.

Karen says
Super cute! I bet it’s half the reason why women buy these in the first place. 🙂
Laura says
I wanna get a rescue kitty to be buds with my hyper active cat, but not sure he’s into the idea ..siiiigh diva!
Karen says
Ha, Tabs is quite the diva too. I’m afraid he’s gonna get all territorial and agro. 🙁
tomi // my tiger lily makeup says
I LUFF BASTARDINO NOW!
Karen says
LOL! I hope you try it!

Just saw Sex and the City 2 tonight, it was wonderful. I like better than the first.

I saw it on Monday. Truth be told, I wasn’t crazy about it. Loved the fashion though…

I really really want this palette, but I just started Project 10 Pan (like 5 minutes ago). It’s where I can’t buy any makeup until I use up at least 10 products and ohmigawd, that’s going to be so difficult! I think my wallet will thank me though.
Karen says
Good luck! That project would take me 10 years, LOL!
House of Accessories says
that green is very pretty!!

Mrs. Kinne says
I am tempted by pretty much the whole line. So far, I’ve only picked up the glitter liner in green, but these palettes are too cute!
I feel like tokidoki is tailor-made for grown women who could not walk past a Sanrio store if they tried.

Karen says
That’s so true! To this day I still love going in to Sanrio to buy pencils and pens. 🙂
Pinch says
Cool! The shades look very pretty, but also so frosty! And haha, the cat with the bow around its neck it looks so embarassed. “Come on mom, don’t let anyone take my picture wearing this travesty!”

LOL, that picture cracks me up. He (she?) does look quite grumpy!
gio says
The entire line tempts me but I thought that it would be all about the packaging and the actual products woud be meh. But maybe I was wrong. I love the colors of this palette, they’re very pretty, especially that green.

I had a feeling you’d like the green!

Those charms are awesome and I’m glad to hear that the shadows are good too! The “To bathe a cat…” made me laugh and I think it could also be said of “To get a cat in his/her carrier to go to the vet….”. 🙂
PS – I’m voting for a little sister for Tabs. As you know, so many need good homes. It took our girl a few weeks to tolerate her rescued “sister” but it was worth it. Now, after a year and a half, they coexist quite nicely.
Karen says
Oh gosh, I feel that pain! Tabs is a terror when it comes to his carrier. It is always so stressful to take him to the vet.
You must tell me more about how the introduction went. I’ve read a few techniques and they all seem so…elaborate.
Nina says
I saw that book at our nearby Borders and so wanted to buy it. Sadly the only copy they have was kinda dog (LOL) eared. 😀
I have been having an internal battle about the tokidoki quads. i want them but dont want to buy them only because of the packaging. Im glad to hear that it works, thanks!
So ill add it back to my virtual Sephora cart and maybe check out at some point soon. I need me a little pick me up. Its been a busy week….
Karen says
Ha ha! Great minds think alike! 😀
Polish Earthgirl says

I have one that makes kitty meows. It drove Tabs nuts for a day or so, then it seemed like he was acting insecure, so I stopped using it. It was pretty funning though.
Liz! says
OH NOES! I’m a sucker for a nice palette, and those pretty neutrals and that green just might break my “No Sephora trips for Liz until she finishes some crap off!!!” rule I made after realizing that I have way too many half empty makeup pans and bottles to justify more purchases. And, I’ve been on more of a face product kick (I’ve been crazy for blushes, bronzers, highlighters, etc…) lately, so it’s been a while since any eye shadow has peaked my interest. Actually, the Adios palette looks really nice too, great for a killer smokey eye. AHHHHH the temptation!!!
Karen says
Oh, what face products have you found? Anything good?
Liz! says
Right now I’m really liking Josie Maran’s line- I recently (before my no more makeup shopping rule, haha) got a blush in the Blossom shade, it’s a pretty peach color . It’s texture is really soft, and its quite pigmented so you only need a little to get a natural glowy look. I’ve been lusting after her Finger Paints palette, its got 4 multi-use colors you can use for blush, highlighting, lip colors, whatever! I wants it so bad…..
But other than that, I’ve kind of been staying with product lines that I like and know, just mixing it up a bit. When my Nars Orgasm blush ran out, I picked up another color. I liked my Hard Candy bronzer and blushes I picked up a couple months ago so much, I decided to buy the other blush colors. And I like them all! I think it’s because I really only started wearing blush/bronzer/highlighter this past winter (my fashion/makeup junky bff at work got me hooked) so I’m still experimenting with a lot of products that are old news to everyone else lol.
Ledina says
Karen, maybe you would be able to help me with this. I swear that creamy eyeshadows last longer and don’t crease on me compared to powder shadows. I’ve only been using cream eyeshadows for the past couple of years, but I just bought a bunch of Stila eyeshadows and god I love them when I put them on, but I swear they crease in one hour. like serious creasing. Is it that I put my daily moisturizer on my eyelids too? or are my lids that oily? must I add another step of eyeshadow primer? or maybe its just that its SO humid in NYC.
Karen says
Hi Ledina,
Try blotting off your moisturizer first. That might help. If it doesn’t go with an additional primer — I like Too Faced Shadow Insurance or Urban Decay Eden.
Ledina says
Thank you! Will do! By the way – I’ve recently discovered your blog and I truly enjoy your makeup adventures (with cat pictures as an added bonus!)
Karen says
🙂 I’m glad you like the site! Let me know if those tricks work — if they don’t we can try brainstorming other solutions. Have a good night!

I had all three palettes gifted to me for my 19th birthday. I was and still am SO happy to have them but… I haven’t touched them! I just can’t do it, they’re too cute ><
Karen says
What a great present! Happy late birthday, BTW! 🙂
Eventually you’ll have to bust into them…they’re great little sets.
tgz says
I wish those palettes were available here. On the other hand, it is better for my budget that they aren’t! 🙂
