The first thing I thought when I saw the new Sula Beauty Eye Crayon in Never Say Never ($8, one of five shades) was, “Did they collaborate with Crayola?”
This is coming from someone who still draws with crayons, so I mean that in the best possible way. This multitasking makeup implement claims to do a bit of everything. It’s supposed to work as a shadow, a liner, and even as a base for powder eyeshadows — a similar idea to the NYX Jumbo Pencils we played with a couple months ago.
Never Say Never’s pigmented shimmery bronze and soft, creamy texture impressed me from the first moment it touched my eyes, but I think it has a few small issues with performance.
As a liner, I find it just okay. It lasts on my lash line for a solid six hours, but it gives up along my water line after about one.
And, unfortunately, I don’t see myself using it as a shadow very often because when I tried it that way both with and without primer, it started to fade and crease after about two hours.
Hmm…
Like the Sula Creasless Creme Shadow we looked at earlier this week, I suspect my oily eyelids are partly to blame. If your lids are drier than mine, I bet you’ll have better luck with these.
Never Say Never is a near miss for me, but I wouldn’t say I’ll never use it again. 🙂

thats such a gorgeous color…one of my fave colors..reminds me of the nyx jumbo pencil…
Karen says
Hi Amritha,
If you love the NYX pencils, you just might dig this one too.
Ruchita says
That’s too bad it fades and creases. I was hoping it would be a less expensive alternative to the Urban Decay Shadow Pencils, but for $8 I might still give it a try!
Karen says
Hi Ruchita,
You should give it a go, especially if your lids are dry. You never know if it’ll work for you!
gio says
What a pretty shade! Too bad it creases so soon but at least it works ok as a liner.
Karen says
Hi Gio,
I sure do love the color too.
Christina says
Reminds me of a darker version of Sephora’s Smoky Eye Kohl in Bronze! Unfortunately, it didn’t last too long on my oily lids as well 🙁 I think I need to give it another chance though with a freshly cleansed face and lid primer. I’ve always been fascinated with eye kohls.
Karen says
Hi Christina,
Me too. Have you found any that you absolutely love? Please share!
Trisha says
I would definitely use this as a liner. Too bad it creases and fades as a shadow, though. Sadness. I like the bronze color so much, though.
Karen says
Me too, Trisha.
Speaking of bronze liners, have you ever tried MAC Powersurge?
Nina says
oh the color is gorgeous! 🙂 maybe with a double dose of primer, this baby will stay on!
Karen says
Hey Nina,
Hmm, maybe! I think I remember you being a fan of the NYX Jumbos… you just might <3 these too.
I'll have to try it with a double dose of primer to see if it makes a difference. 🙂
Nina says
yes i am! and i definitely want to check these Sula pencils out!
Karen says
I know a lot of women love the Jumbos! I love how they amp up the intensity of eyeshadows, but they crease like crazy on me. Did you ever manage to collect all the NYX Jumbo colors?
Jessi says
I was really hoping that this crayon and the creaseless cream shadow would work. I loooove Benefit’s Creaseless Creams and wanted a cheaper option! Oh well. :-/
Karen says
Hi Jessi,
What are your lids like? If they’re super dry these just might work for you!
Chris25 says
It does remind me of the NYX Jumbo Sticks. Shame it creases on you. 🙁 That color is so pretty.
Karen says
Are you a fan of the NYX Jumbo Sticks, Chris? I know a lot of people love them.
lexi says
I have the lilac one, forgot the name but I agree – it doesn’t really wow me. I just wanted to try something different.
Karen says
Me too, Lexi. I was really hoping it would work out because I love that it’s cruelty free… oh well. Did you try yours with a primer, or on its own?
Vijaya says
Not into crease-y cream shadows. xP
Karen says
They’re not fun!
Sondra says
Ooooo, that’s a gorgeous color…but if it doesn’t last that long…I need to be wowed when it comes to eyeliner. (oh who am I kidding, when it comes to EVERYTHING!)
Thanks for the gorgeous swatches!
Hey my sister & I are going to visit San Fran in November for her birthday and I was hoping you OR your readers could answer a few questions…? If we stay at a hotel near the airport, is there public transportation to downtown? (fisherman’s wharf, malls, etc…) How far is it from the airport to all the “good stuff”? I know it’s not good to drive to all that stuff because of traffic, parking costs, etc…, but could anyone recommend a decent hotel (cheap but clean) that is a little more centrally located OR that is close to public transportation?
Thank you!!!!!
Karen says
Hi Sondra,
The airport is quite a long way from the city. It’s like a 15-20 ride on the freeway to get to downtown; then add 20 minutes via car to get anywhere else if there’s no traffic. I’m not exactly sure about public transportation from the airport, but you could probably take BART and then switch to Muni once you get in the city.
Since I live here I don’t really know about the hotel situation, so you might want to check out yelp.com. Here’s a link: San Francisco Hotel Reviews on Yelp! Hope this helps; let me know if you have any other questions.
Sondra says
Thanks so much Karen!!
Advah says
Ugh those are exactly the issues I have with Sephora’s jumbo pencils! I’ve two with beautiful colours and have never been able to use them, unless I’m missing a vital step. 🙁
Karen says
Hi Advah,
Have you tried layering a colorless primer beneath your Sephora pencils? That might help.
Advah says
DUH no I’ve not, thank you! I’d had primer on my list of things to buy for a while, time do finally do it. 🙂
Karen says
You’re welcome! There’s a lot of different primers to choose from, but I really like NARS’. If you live near a Sephora or a NARS counter maybe ask them foro a sample so you can try it first.
Another thing you can try is to layer a powder shadow on top of your pencil. That might help, too.
Jenn says
Never Say Never is a gorgeous color, though. Shame it doesn’t last long!
Karen says
Isn’t it though? Plus, it’s also a Justin Bieber song. LOL!
Kim says
Now I’ll be singing Never Say Never Again (from the Bond movie) all day. Yikes! 🙂 I think I have a prejudice against multipurpose pencils. I had one from Stila that was supposed to be for lips, cheeks and eyes. It was awful on all 3, at least for me. Now whenever I see this kind of product, I’m suspicious that it will only be good for one of the purported uses – if that!
Karen says
Ahh! You said the magic word — BOND! Which Bond’s your fave? I’m a Daniel Craig girl.
Kim says
I know – I’m a total sucker for the Bond movies, but I’ve got to go old school on you. Sean Connery, all the way. 🙂 I’m actually laughing now, remembering my very poor imitation of “Do you exshpect me to talk?”, “No, Mr. Bond… I expect you to die”. It was so ridiculous that the Hubs was dying of embarrassment FOR me, and it was only the 2 of us in the house. I can still see his face! HAHA!
