The Sonia Kashuk Twist of Fate Brush Set for Holiday 2009: Elegant, But Do They Bring It?

Sonia Kashuk Twist of Fate Brush Set, $20

Earlier this decade, Sonia Kashuk reinvented the budget brush market, making drugstore makeup brushes cool. For the holidays this year, she’s taking that budget luxe philosophy another big step forward by introducing a line with twisted faux-sliver handles that won’t break the bank.

But looks aren’t everything, and to find out if Sonia’s new brushes bring the noise, I put ‘em to the test.

The six-piece limited edition Twist of Fate Brush Set ($20, on sale now at Target), Sonia’s premium collection of brushes for the holidays, joins five limited edition holiday makeup palettes and accessories (also on sale at Target).

Sonia Kashuk Twist of Fate

With a black clutch purse to carry them in (one that looks like it could cost more than $20 by itself), these six short-handled brushes will be traveling in style.

  • A powder/blush brush
  • A foundation brush
  • A crease brush
  • An eyeshadow brush
  • An eyeliner brush
  • A brow/lash comb

Pros

  • Look expensive
  • Brush heads feel soft against my skin and apply/blend product well
  • Clutch purse fits everything with room to spare
  • Brushes feel lightweight — perfect for girls on the go!
  • Fantastic deal; breaks down to $2.86/per item (including the clutch)

Cons

  • The faux-silver handles show every fingerprint
  • Included plastic lash comb not great compared to metal ones I’ve used before
  • Clutch’s fabric inner liner hard to clean

All this and a cute clutch for $20? — I’d say that’s a great deal. It may be budget, but it doesn’t look like it. Another good job, Sonia! Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A

Tuesday confession!

ryan-reynolds-oh-hai

PERVERT ALERT!

Since watching The Proposal the other night, I’ve spent waaaay too much time looking at pictures of Ryan Reynolds.

It must be tough for him being so hot, but I guess somebody’s gotta do it. :)

Apart from massive doses of Ry-Reynolds, it’s been business as usual for me. How was your Tuesday?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Karen–thanks for the review of the SK brushes…my local Target still doesn’t have them….actually, I’m only really interested in the Kabuki brush that matches this set, but it’s good to know that it’ll be worth the money!

Work is KILLIN’ me right now….it’s amazing how many people really wait until the last minute to order important things, like let’s say….Wedding Invitations. I had a bride today question why she couldn’t expect to have engraved invitations done in TWO days…..REALLY?!? It makes my brain hurt……

  2. ooh DonnaN!! Are you in the stationary biz? I am getting married next year and still have lots of planning to do….

Karen, RR looks soooo hot in that movie! I saw it in the plane so I couldn’t fully appreciate his hotness, but perhaps I will have to rent it now and watch on the regular screen. =D

  3. Rae says:

Ahh, pretty! We don’t have SK in Canada, but there’s always relatives… :P

I’m not a HUGE Ryan Reynolds fan (well, that’s a lie. I’m not really a fan at all.) but he’s alright. Just *alright*, though! Boy needs to learn how to keep his shirt on!
.-= Rae’s last blog post… So I’ve been getting into fragrances recently. =-.

  4. Kate & Zena says:

My Tuesday was all right. Slept with Zena, got dressed, went to school, took my steroids (three more days and I’m free of icky tasting steroids, yay!), got into my jammies, checked here finally…normal day.

What’s good is that the eau de Peu fragrance is very nearly gone, thankfully. Zena has been eau de Peu free since after a head bath in a mix of hydrogen peroxide, soap and baking soda but the scent still lingers a teeny bit here…three Febreze sprees later.

What’s bad is that I have a Marxist-Feminist criticism rough draft due Thursday and I can’t figure out what to write. I’m so completely essayed-out and I still have a month of essays left (December 17, why doth thou be so far away?).

I don’t know if it’s just me, but I like the handles on my brushes to be on the long side. I’m so used to handling paint brushes that I prefer handles that are long like the Leow-Cornell brushes I use. Wait, I do, every once-in-a-while, use three of my Leow-Cornell paint brushes as make-up brushes. Ha ha ha ha ha.

How’s the weather over at your neck o’ the woods? It’s cold and windy here. brrrrrr.

    • Karen says:

      Hi Kate,

It was overcast and blah this morning, but now it’s sunny and clear. Still chilly outside though!

I’m glad to hear that Zena is back to her non-stinky self once more. BTW, are you almost done with your rough draft? Don’t leave it up to the last minute!

  5. Jasmine says:

*Ah hem* that picture is divine!

  6. Sheila says:

Too bad Ryan Reynolds is married… =( He’s Canadian though! Another Canadian sweetheart like Rachel McAdams, haha.

Great looking set and it looks luxe. I wish I have easy access to a Target. Yes Ryan Reynolds is pretty hot. Bonus points for being a Vancouver boy. I have no problem with him keeping his shirt off LOL!

  8. Lorna says:

now i have to get this set. i have sonia kashuk’s black brushes and they are my staples. i love almost all of them. there are a few i don’t use just because i can’t find a regular use for them. these looks like ones i would definitely get use out of. also, the clutch it comes with looks decent. too many products that give away bags, give you really ugly ones.

i just got the MUFE travel brushes but i was disappointed. they are going back and i am getting these instead. thanks for posting!

  11. mags says:

Looks great! Just hope I can find it at my local target….

  12. Patty says:

Moreover, it must be tough being his wife. Poor, poor ScarJo.

  13. Ashley says:

This may sound a little stalkerish but Ryan Reynold lives in Vancouver I think? With his WIFE Scarlett Johanson but I never see them! Maybe it’s just their habit of going back to LA for work but I have never once spotted them!
Ryan Reynolds is sooo yummy though!
Anywho, I keep seeing this brush set pop up on beauty blogs but I’m still lemming towards the Borghese/Kirkland brush set at Costco!

  14. Tavia says:

Wow, they really do look elegant and that price is more than cheap. Here if I’m lucky I can get a simple brush on this price at Sephora. Sometimes I envy you US girls, you have such a great prices there. Here everything is at least a double price :((

love, love, love the SK brushes. I started with her brushes and although I have slowly added a half dozen MAC brushes, I still use a couple of the SKs every day. Her metal lash comb is a staple for me-I actually own 4 so I can clean them only once a month. And that clutch is to die for!

  17. Maggie says:

I’ve been meaning to get some new brushes…definitely checking this out!! They look so luxe. I hate when makeup products have packaging that shows every single fingerprint though. I’ll just have to deal with that.

    Thanks for the review, Karen!

PS. Yes indeed, Ryan Reynolds is HAWT! :)

i really like sonia kashuk brushes – especially as someone on a budget! i only have a few of them, but will definitely get them soon! this looks so pretty, but i don’t know about every day use — def. gift worthy!

    • Karen says:

      Hi DeAnna,

Sonia brushes are great quality for the price. If you’re going to get some for everyday use I recommend the ones with the long, black handles. They have very soft brush heads!

  19. gio says:

That’s a very pretty and elegant set. And the price is so cheap.

Karen, thanks for the review! I am on the lookout for good, but inexpensive, brushes. I will have to check them out next time I am at Target.

My Tuesday was full of rain from Hurricane (or is it Tropical Storm) Ida. It rained all day long here in GA and last night hubby noticed a window leaking. Come to find out, we had 3 windows leaking last night and the power went out. Thank goodness, the rain is supposed to stop today.

My son and I are going to a book fair this afternoon when he gets out of school, so that should be a nice change of pace!

Hope your week is going well!

You know, I’ve actually still never tried any SK brushes! I have more than I need with my collection of EcoTools and Everyday Minerals, but somehow I feel like I’m kinda missing out LOL. I will pick up her foldable metal lash comb once my Tweezerman finally kicks the bucket though (sad, the tines have been falling out and it’s less than a year old =/).

Oh, I hear that. Before I moved Target was 30 minutes away and that was enough to deter me from many a trip. Now it’s just five minutes away. DANGEROUS! :)

  28. Karen B says:

A great set with a gorgeous clutch AND a half-naked RyRy in one post? You spoil us Karen! Hehe.
I wish I had Target here… I could get it for my birthday?

    • Karen says:

      Hi Karen B.,

Girl, if you had a Target nearby you’d be in their 24/7! They have a really good drugstore beauty section. I could spend hours — HOURS! — there. :)

  29. Rebecca says:

      Hi Luv2smilexo,

NICE! I wouldn’t mind RyRy staring back at me as I typed all day long. Hmm…

Wasn’t he once engaged to Alanis Morisette? Or am I confusing my hot dudes?

    Hi Karen,
AHH I’m obsessed with him too,
and those brushes look so sleeeeek.
    :]
I got your package on Saturday and I am soooooo thankful for all the little gifts and the card that came with it.
I’m actually wearing the nailpolish in Haze, and it’s awesssomeeee. I’m gettings lots of compliments for it.
Sorry I couldn’t post anything sooner, the internet has been down.
    THANKS SO MUCH AGAINNN!!!!!!!!!

  33. Kate & Zena says:

    Karen,

It’s about as done as my rough draft is going to get. It’s more outline-y than a rough draft but that’s okay. I need help from my teacher. It’s really hard to criticize my own family (we need to pick a specific scene that generally describes our family and use the Marxist-Feminist approach to analayze it) so I need another set of eyes to guide me. I had problems with my first essay for the same reason–I’m not a person who goes around airing out my laundry. I’m incredibly private. So, I need help analyzing the scene I picked as I just cannot figure out how to analyze it!

It is chilly! It’s 34 here! Brrrrrrrr.

You would not believe how happy I was when I could take a big whiff of oat-clean-smelling Zena and not Pepe le Peu Zena. That was not a fun experience. The only downside is that Zena is currently anti-backyard because she fears the skunk!

    • Karen says:

      Hi Kate & Zena,

      Um, yeah that’s cold. It’s 50-something here and I’m wearing a parka — indoors!

Soon enough Z. will remember all the fun times she had in the backyard. She’ll be back to bounding around and having (hopefully non-stinky) adventure in no time!

  34. DonnaN says:

    Karen (et al),

I do work in the wedding bix (sorta). I work as a wedding specialist for an online stationer. I work with brides, their moms (and future MIL’s), bridesmaids…..you name it! It so much fun!!

  35. DonnaN says:

sorry….meant to say “It’s so much fun”…turned my brain off after work tonight…..LOL!

  36. Kate & Zena says:

    Karen,

I know! It gets colder in winter here! I want to hibernate everytime winter plagues the Midwest. Our winters are cold, dry and windy.

Z is giving you the “you wanna bet?” look. She’s not thrilled with the cold either. She’s wearing a snowman sweater!

  37. Kate & Zena says:

    Karen,

    I have pictures! See:

    TheSweater

Okay, a picture. I usually wait until after Thanksgiving to put that one on her but she was cold and it’s the easiest sweater to put on her. Behold the power of Velcro!

  38. Sarah says:

    Hey :)

I’m a teen, and that means I have little money. I need new brushes, I have horrible cheapy scratchy ones right now. EW! But would this be enough for everyday stuff?I don’t wear alot of make up, just powder and eye stuff. :) Maybe some blush haha.

Lol, for a teen, this is already like 3 or 4 hours of working to pay for them :)

And I have three targets less than 3 minutes away! Talk about dangerous!!!!
