Sure, brown and beige eyeshadows are always there when you need ’em. They’re dependable, like Ford trucks. But sometimes, ya know, I just wanna play with color. 🙂
And if my experiments with color don’t work out, so what? It’s only makeup, right? I can always wash it off (unlike that tattoo of Tabs’ face on my arm…kidding).
Following that train of thought, there’s the new NARS Mad Mad World Eyeshadow Duo ($34).
It’s that eye-catching blue and green beauty from the new spring 2013 collection…
Pigment much?
With that much color at your disposal, you could go all out by loading one (or both) of the shades on your lids for an intense look, or do something much subtler, like a faint blue whisper similar to what NARS did with model Stella Tennant for the spring 2013 campaign.
Check out her lower lash line. See that blue smudged softly into the black liner? That’s how I’ve been wearing Mad Mad World (minus the pink on my lids…which is a little much for me, but if you can pull if off, more power to ya!).
I think it’s an easy, rock ‘n’ roll-ish spring twist on a basic black liner look.
Mad Mad World isn’t something I can see myself wearing every day of the year, but that doesn’t make it any less fun. Plus, the powders are top-notch. I’m talkin’ smoove…
Pigment plays a starring role in the NARS spring collection, and Mad Mad World is a Best Supporting Actor. Because both shades in the duo pack so much punch, I barely have to use any to make an impact.
I’ll be wearing these eyeshadows until I’m like, 85, for reals!!
I can see it now… A little ol’ 85-year-old lady in a Chanel tweed suit with blue eyeshadow along her lower lash line, walking her cat on a leash. We’ll still be friends then, of course. 🙂

Zella on sale, new stuff from Hourglass
Slowly…climbing…THE HUMP! (Happy Wednesday!)
Quick heads up in case you’ve had your eye on the Zella Gathered Tote. The teal one’s on sale now over at nordstrom.com, marked down to $45 from $68.
And I just got wind of a new line of powders coming out next month from Hourglass.
The six Ambient Lighting Powders, $45 each, supposedly emulate different lighting effects, from pink light to candlelight. There’s also a new $35 Ambient Powder Brush coming, too.
From the official PR…
- DIFFUSED LIGHT: A soft, warm, pale yellow powder. Light your skin with DIFFUSED LIGHT to reduce redness and give skin clarity — like a soft ray of morning light.
- ETHEREAL LIGHT: An opalescent sheer, cool white powder. Light your skin with ETHEREAL LIGHT to mimic a moonlit glow — even in broad daylight.
- RADIANT LIGHT: A sun-kissed golden beige powder. Light your skin with RADIANT LIGHT to extend a summer glow, or enhance the overall complexion with believable, subtle, warmth.
- MOOD LIGHT: A soft, sheer lavender pink powder. Light your skin with MOOD LIGHT to mimic the softest most forgiving light and reveal your brightest complexion.
- DIM LIGHT: A neutral peach beige powder. Light your skin with DIM LIGHT to blur imperfections and highlight a radiant complexion with the perfect balance of warm and cool tones.
- LUMINOUS LIGHT: A champagne pearl powder. Light your skin with LUMINOUS LIGHT to create a soft, incandescent candlelit glow — day or night.
These seem like pressed versions of Bobbi Brown’s new Retouching Powders.
Interesting. 🙂 I’ll keep you posted.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

I’m working to find a green that works at my lower lashline. This mama needs a little oomph in her face. Leaning blue-green looks like a great way to start. Love this shadow on you!
Marla says
I guess I’m more of a neutral girl. Those shades are just a little too bright for me.
Julie Fischer says
I’m excited for the Hourglass powders! The range looks so incredibly soft and delicate.
Denise says
Pretty colors and I like the idea of wearing the blue as an eyeliner! I have the duo Persepolis it’s also a green-blue color by Nars that I love. This one might be added to my stash!

loving the preview for the Hourglass powders- was just admiring their use on the red carpet at Golden Globes(Emily Blunt, Jessica Alba) and am intrigued! Don’t normally go for highlighters but this one seems made for me. can’t wait to try and i’ll be looking for your review
Sunny says
Yess highlighters from Hourglass! So exciting!
Jasmine says
I’ve always wanted to be able to use a highlighter or something to make my skin look luminous but I have oily skin so I’m afraid ^.^

I love how bright these are! They’re fun and perfect for spring!

It’s amazing how beautiful you look wearing every color from this collection! And I am very excited about those highlighters from Hourglass.
Btw, are you going to review those new powders from Nars? I’m really curious about them.
Becca @ The Beauty Sample says
Again, the duo is pretty but definitely not for me. It definitely looks pretty smudged into your black liner like that but if that were the only way I was going to use it, I wouldn’t drop my cash on it :/
As for the new Hourglass powders, YAY!!! 😀 I was literally just on the Hourglass site last night wondering when a.) they would be releasing new items and b.) when they would be releasing a pressed cheek powder (I was hoping for blush but this is just as good!!). Cant wait to try these!!
Megan says
I LOVED those shades but had no idea how on earth someone would use them…you look fantastic! I think my skin is just too pale for them though.
Those powders look gorgeous. I wish I could handle the price.

The Hourglass powders look interesting–decent concept, and I’m interested to see how they hold up.
Trixie says
I have a Sephora duo eyeshadow called tropical blue that seems very similar to Nars Mad Mad World. It might be a cheaper option for someone who likes the colors but does not want to splurge for the NARS. I personally love the bright blue and green and have fun creating bold, bright looks with these colors.

Gah! I just paid full price for the Zella tote like a week or so ago! I think I can get my price adjusted though, so thanks for the heads up! Lastly, I’m keeping my eye out for those highlighting powders, so pretty 🙂
Karen says
What color did you get? The sale price is for the teal one. The black bag that I have is still full price, unfortch.
Kalli says
I got the teal color! It’s so pretty 😀
Darbie says
Ug I keep calling to see when my local sephors will have them in. No word yet.
Sharon says
I have to say you’re an absolute genius at co-ordinating looks, Karen. Btw, what are you wearing on your lips? I have the same skin-tone as you and omg that lip-shade looks stunning!
Sharon says
Gonna try out the eye-look as well. Loving it!
Jennifer says
How do you wear such crazy colors and make them look normal? I’d look wounded!
Isolde says
Blue and green is one of my favourite colour combos. I think they just compliment each other and look so rich together! They look beautiful on you too! x
