The MAC Julia Petit Collection: Flexible, Fabulous Colors for Everyone

If all makeup collections tell a story, then for me, the new MAC Julia Petit collection starts in a colorful cafe somewhere in the heart of São Paulo.

Our heroine, uber-famous Brazilian lifestyle blogger Julia Petit, is sitting at a table outside with a girlfriend e uma xícara de café. They’re chatting about makeup and cats and laughing and having fun.

Over the course of a couple hours, more friends trickle in, taking seats around the table and ordering coffee and snacks, until every square inch of table space is packed.

That’s how this collection feels like to me. It’s like, all the girls are there, and everyone’s enjoying themselves, and absolutely nobody feels left out.

In the time I’ve spent with the collection so far, I get a strong sense of inclusiveness, like Julia wanted flexible colors that would suit everyone.

From the neutrals in the eyeshadow duos to the blush and the lipsticks, all of them seem very accessible to me, which is to say that there aren’t any crazy-pants blackened forest green eye glosses here (although those certainly have their time and place!).

From the matte browns in the eyeshadow duos, the red lipstick (always a classic), the soft pinkish peach lipstick (do neutral lips ever go out of style? HELL NAW!) and the peachy pinkish bronze powder blush (which should look AMAZEBALLS with or without a tan), I’m also getting a trend-defying ladylike vibe.

That said, there’s still room for bad-girl black eyeliner and a pair of @ss-kicker motorcycle boots. The deep violet matte lipstick adds just enough rebelliousness for gals who like their makeup with an edge.

All three of these lipsticks are wish list worthy. Satiny soft pinkish nude Boca, matte strawberry cream Petite Red and matte deep violet Acai are a saturated symphony of smoothness that would make Fred and Ginger proud.

Same goes for the soft pinkish brown Powder Blush in Linda. Super pigmented, and it lasts all day long on my cheeks (for reference, I have combo dry/oily skin). As for the finish? Swoon city.

At first glance, I think it totally looks like a matte on my skin (so there’s no drama involving my pores, YAY!), but when I look closer…I see a lovely, subtle sheen.

Perfect, because I love the look of glowing skin and cheeks. I think Linda will definitely help in that pursuit.

I’m Team Glowing Skin all the way!

Then there are the eyeshadow duos, which get two paws up from me for their smooth matte finishes and wearability. They’re a good place to start if you’re completely new to eye makeup.

If, however, your eyeshadow situation is fully locked and loaded, you’re likely to already find similar colors in your stash.

And how about Purpurine? It’s a sheer peach Lipglass with pink and gold pearl. Purr-fect for when I’m in the mood for sparkly lips and barely-there color.

So glad to see the swatches. You are gorgeous no matter what! I need that eye duo tho. Going to look now….. Oh, how do you think the blush compares to NARS Orgasm?

    • Karen says:

      Hi QBDOLL,

Good eye! I was thinking the same thing when I first swatched it. The gold in Linda is less shimmery and more like a soft sheen, while Orgasm is more like a straight up golden shimmer. The finish on Linda also looks closer to a matte so it’s more forgiving on pores (on me Orgasm is pretty shimmery). One last thing — Linda is a touch more bronzy and more pink compared to Orgasm. HTH!

  4. That blush is so pretty… The different finish may be enough to convince me it is necessary to add this one to my collection, too, ignoring the fact that I own similar shades en masse.

  5. Jen C says:

Wow I love the lip colors in this collection! Especially Boca, it looks like such a promising nude for pigmented lips like mine – not too sheer, and not too light in color!

To sidetrack, Karen, I’ve been curious about the weekly giveaways.. are the winners announced on the blog? I’m asking as I always seem to miss out on the announcements. Thanks in advance!

    • Karen says:

      Hi Jen,

I contact the winners by email, so that’s the main way most winners find out. That or sometimes Twitter when I can’t reach someone by email. And their names are posted either at the top of each giveaway post, or within the Rafflecopter widget when I use them. Last week’s winner has already been contacted, but the next one is tomorrow. You never know. Good luck. 🙂

      • Jen C says:

Thanks Karen! I’ll check back to the giveaway link then! I’ve never been very good at checking emails.. oops. Have a gd day!

Do you think acai is a dupe for fashion revival?
Cause to me they look quite the same.

Your photos look great by the way, you’re gorgeous!

Hey Karen, I loved your review! Thank you!
I’m Brazilian and I looove Julia Petit. She’s adorable. I can’t wait to buy all the itens from the collection.
Congratulations for your pronounciation, that’s exactly how you said 🙂 Boca means mouth and acai is a delicious purple berry. Linda means beautiful. I think the names were well chosen too. So in love with this collection!!! =D

  15. masha russia says:

I love Boca lipstick. It makes lips look perfect without a hint that there is makeup worn. The shadow duos are well coordinated and do not look boring.

  17. Alethea Silvestre says:

I am a big fan of Julia Petit – I’ve been watching her video tutorials for years. Julia has indeed said the intention behind the collection was to create shades that would be flattering across skin tones. I think that’s very thoughtful of her. Pretty much like the US, our country, Brazil, is a multiracial nation. Nevertheless some makeup brands seem to ignore that – and launch products such as foundations that will only suit light to medium skin tones. Frankly, I find it offensive. So it’s quite refreshing to see Julia focus on ‘inclusiveness’ – I think you chose the perfect word to describe her concept. And she is so likeable! I think you two should definitely hang out 🙂 Come to São Paulo, Karen!

  18. Sabrina says:

    Hi! Loved your review!
Here in Brazil Julia Petit (you speak without the last “t”) is huge!
She is one of our first beauty bloggers. She’s been around in youtube before this “beauty blog fever” we are experiencing today. She has a tv show (Base Aliada = Ally foundation) and everything.
Anyway, great review! And check out her tutorials. I think you’re going to like it.

  19. The colors look great on you. I really like that Linda blush, is it all matte?

  20. oh also….i really love that necklace you have one in these pics. Where is it from??

  21. Amoolya says:

I love Boca! Is it in anyway similar to runway hit from the retro mattes?

  22. Annette says:

Hi Karen! What foundation are you wearing in these pictures? Looks lovely on your skin.

  23. Beti says:

Not able to find this collection. Apparently is only going to be sold at select counters and stores. Nordstrom won’t carry.
