Hey, Sailor! (That never gets old.) Why yes, I am wearing MAC Riviera Life Lipglass
Oh. My. Gawd! You’re not gonna believe this (and you’d be wise not to), but I had a run-in with Ry-Ry! It was yesterday in line at Starbucks. There I was, just minding my own beeswax, when in walks Mr. Ryan Gosling himself!
He had on a tight white t-shirt, drawstring linen capri pants and a pair of brown boat shoes. I couldn’t see his rippling abs through his t-shirt…but I knew they were there. Watching me.
So he walks over, right? Right over to me, because I’m the last person in line, and says, “Can I buy you a drink?”
I’m like, “Shyeah!”
I tell him I’ll take a Grande Soy Chai Latte — no foam, please — and he asks if I want to go out sailing on his schooner.
I don’t know what a schooner is, but what the hell am I gonna say — no? I tell him, “Sure, Ryan, but before we go, I gotta touch up my Lipglass.”
He says, “No worries, boo. I hope you like the Riviera, because that’s where we’re going. Flight leaves in an hour.”
“…”
I’m shocked. Totally speechless. And then it hits me — what about my cat!? El Hub will probably understand — I mean, it’s Ryan Gosling! — but Tabs?
And then, as if sensing my concern, Ryan gently places his finger on my lips and says, “If you’re worried about Tabs, he can come too.”
I just about died!
But then I woke up. 🙂
Send Me Sailing (please, Ryan?)
Talk about rude awakenings. But I still felt somehow close to Ryan in that moment, like, connected by the dream, so I shut my eyes really tight and wished for the dream to come true…
Sure enough, it worked!
Well, mostly. Not the part about Ryan Gosling (damn!), but the part about the Lipglass from the MAC Hey, Sailor! collection.
The five $15.50 Lipglasses in the release drop anchor on MAC counters and maccosmetics.com on May 24. They range from pale to bright warm shades of peach, coral and orange, punctuated by red and gold.
The MAC Hey, Sailor! Lipglass lineup includes…
- Cut Loose: a white golden pearl
- Orange Tempera: a pale peach
- Riviera Life: a bright tangerine
- Blessedly: a pale, rich coral
- Send Me Sailing: a bright yellowish red
Here are my thoughts on three of the five Hey, Sailor! shades…
Send Me Sailing: A heat spell hits Russian Red! I feel like I’ve been waiting decades for a color like this — a warm-toned version of Russian Red Lipglass!
It lasts for hours, but when it does eventually wear off, it leaves behind a beautiful deep red matte stain on my lips. So pretty!
I think it looks beyond gorgeous on top of MAC Cockney and Lady Bug lipstick.
Sure, because it is so pigmented, it likes to migrate, but I work around that by lining my lips first with a lip liner like Pro Longwear Lip Pencil in Throw Me a Line!, also from MAC Hey, Sailor! But any yellowish red liner should do. You might try MAC Pro Longwear Lip Pencil in Kiss Me Quick…whose name reminds me of The Cure.
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: A+
Riviera Life: If you like Caqui from the Blogger’s Obsessions collection or Morange lipstick from MAC’s permanent line, you might like this opaque, bright tangerine orange as much as I do.
It’s spiced with fine flecks of golden shimmer and hasn’t met an orange, coral or reddish coral lipstick in my collection that it doesn’t like to be layered with. You might try it with MAC Lady Danger, So Chaud or Crosswires.
One layer lasts for hours, until it leaves behind an orange lip stain (almost like getting two MAC products for the price of one).
OOH! I just thought of something I’d like to try… What about pairing Riviera Life with an eye look of nude shadow on the lids and a couple layers of blue mascara? I think that sounds like fun. 🙂
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: A+
Orange Tempera: I like this creamy pale peach just fine — it’s much lower maintenance than the other shades I’ve tried — but I feel like MAC cheesed out by re-releasing this color so soon after the Fall Colour collection.
It layers like a champ, but I find myself using it sparingly. If I’m not careful, it can look milky on my lips.
As a side, doesn’t it seem like MAC recycles colors more often than they used to?

Essie Bikini So Teeny
Not MAC related, but I thought you might still be interested in this. I was poking around on the Essie website and spotted a new summer collection called Bikini So Teeny.
I think the pictures gave me Mojito Madness… LOL!
That’s one of my favorite summer drinks, and here I think it’s a green that looks like it would be a lot of fun on toes.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. What have you been up to this afternoon? I think I might stop by Sephora after work to look around…
Notice I said “look,” so if I come home with anything, feel free to politely scold me.
Agata says
I have seen the new Essie collections on a few blogs too and I’m in love. I have to have the blue and the green one…or maybe all of them 🙂
“Looking”at Sephora? That’s how it always starts and then you notice something that you absolutely must have 🙂 let us know what you saw 🙂
Karen says
Hi Agata,
It always starts with just one or two colors, LOL! I like the blue one too. But the green… ooh la la!
I saw a couple of Illamasqua and Spa Ritual nail polishes that looked pretty neat, but didn’t pull the trigger. Have you found anything good at Sephora lately?
Becca @ The Beauty Sample says
I so NEED Riviera Life NOW!!! I think I’m actually going to get that instead of Dior’s Orange Pareo–it definitely seems like the perfect, easy pop of color for summer. Oh, and I love Essie! I’ll definitely keep an eye out for Bikini so Teeny and Fear or Desire (I LOVE orange nail polishes!)
Karen says
Hi Becca,
Both are great shades of orange! You can’t go wrong with either. It really depends on how much coverage you want. Are you looking for something with medium coverage or a more opaque gloss?
Teri says
I always wish those dreams could lasts forever, haha! I really love the red and the orange lipglass, they are so lovely! I tried my first lipglass today btw and I’m really very impressed with them, can’t believe I didn’t try them before! I really loooove the red colour on you, it’s just made for you, right?
Karen says
Hi Teri,
Ah, every girl remembers her first MAC Lipglass. Mine was Spite. What color did you try on today?
steph b says
Love it – Tabs can come too! Such a considerate dream. The collection, on the other hand, isn’t doing it for me. So sad when that happens.
Karen says
Hi Steph,
Of course Ryan would be the ultimate gentleman and invite Tabs along!
How was brunch and Bike DC?
steph b says
Brunch was fab but Bike DC was a disaster. They decided to detour us which sent thousands of people back into the stream of bike traffic and then onto open roads where we were sharing the single lane with cars. I will be skipping the event next year!
Karen says
Well that sounds really stressful and not fun at all. At least brunch was good. What did you order?
steph b says
The organizer sent out the most pitiful apology email that deflected all responsibility for the problems onto other people. Lot of negative chatter in the interwebs about it.
I had version of eggs benedict with spinach and bacon over great crsuty french bread. Was delish.
Karen says
NOM. I love me some poached eggs. Now I want breakfast for dinner, thanks!
steph b says
I never have time for full cooked breakfast in the morning, but breakfast food is awesome so I have to have it for dinner some times. Yesterday it was french toast with the most gorgeous strawberries from the farmers market. Mmmm, mmmm good.
Karen says
Me neither! In the mornings I always eat gruel (aka oatmeal) because it’s fast and my body likes it for pre-workout fuel. Oh, but on the weekends, it’s ON. Gimme waffles, pancakes, hashbrowns, eggs…the whole nine yards, please.
You know what I’ve never understood? People who go out to brunch and order oatmeal. Just make it at home!
Kajal Couture says
Ooh, nice dream!
I like Riviera Life on you, but just today I was thinking that I have too many lip products and I can’t buy anymore till I finish at least a couple of them. It obviously didn’t take much to break that!
Karen says
Hi Kajal Couture,
I believe that a girl can never have enough 1) shoes and 2) lip glosses. Go for the Riviera Life!
Nina says
Just a heads up, ladies — Hey, Sailor is up on the US maccosmetics.com site. 🙂 The collectoin isnt on the splash page yet, but you can find the stuff under their individual categories. Happy shopping!
Karen says
Sweet, thanks Nina! 🙂
I know you’re not really into the collection, but will you be picking anything up?
Nina says
I have one thing in my cart right now. I havent checked out, but you know me… I will cave. Its gotta be soon though, since I think the one item I want is gonna be one of those quick sellers!
Chris25 says
Riviera Life is beautiful. I’ve been needing an orange gloss.
Did I tell you that the animal shelter orientation went swimmingly? I should be starting soon!
Karen says
Hi Chris,
Tabs and I are very excited for your new gig . What will you be doing at the shelter?
Chris25 says
Basically dog walking, cleaning litter boxes, washing animals, cleaning kennels.
Meredith from Lushli says
Lol Karen you are too funny! I love your Ryan Gosling dream – and he would totally wear that! As for the lipglasses I think they are absolutely stunning. I love how pigmented they are and I want to try every single color 🙂
dani@callitbeauty says
HOLY PHO! Riviera Life and Send Me Sailing are stunning! I *need* to pick those two up!
Sunny @ Mostly Sunny says
I love Riviera Life! It’s pretty opaque, and the shimmer is delicious 🙂
Peachesandblush says
I love Send me Sailing on you!
Linnea says
Oh Karen.. of course Ryan would invite Tabs along.
I bought Mojito Madness (I think a Canadian nail polish website mistakingly put them on the site before the release date. I took advantage 😀 )
I also go All Tied Up (not my typical spring/summer colour — more fall, but beautiful!), Off the Shoulder (on my toes — its like a brighter neon barbie pink, awesome!), and Bikini So Teeny (I haven’t checked it out yet, but I’m sure it will be great!). I think Essie has really hit the summer colours this year – my only complaint would be that there’s too many similar oranges (they’re all awesome, just very similar).
