The ghd Curve Classic Wave Wand: For Loose, Screen Siren-Style ’40s Waves the Very First Time

Rockin’ loose Hollywood starlet waves with the new ghd Curve Classic Wave Wand ($245)

[SHH…] I’m growing my hair out so I can take full advantage of the new ghd Curve Classic Wave Wand, and yes, it’s a secret that El Hub does not need to know (although he’ll eventually realize it), because it would bring him too much joy. ๐Ÿ™‚

That man. I swear, I get my hair cut half an inch, and he freaks out!

What is it with dudes and long hair?

So, this wand is really freaking cool. Like, $245 cool, which is how much it costs, and that’s coming from a girl who usually doesn’t like clip-less hair tools.

I know, I know — clip-less wands are super popular these days, but I’ve got trauma, man. When I used one a few years back, I nearly burnt my fingers to a crisp, and after that incident, I started sticking to curling irons with clamps, like the ghd Curve Soft Curl I tried earlier this month.

In my paw for scale…

Buuut one must be willing to try new things (both with hair and in life), which is why I decided to give the ghd Curve Classic Wave Wand a whirl.

And now I’m so glad I did, because I love so many things about it.

First, the shape. Check it: the barrel is a flattened oval, almost like a curling iron, but instead of creating traditional bouncy, round curls, it builds loose, s-shaped, old-school Hollywood waves on medium length and long hair.

By the power of Greyskull!!

Like the equally expensive and comparably impressive ghd Curve Soft Curl, this ghd tool, the Classic Wave Wand, comes with all the bells and whistles.

From ghdhair.comโ€ฆ

  • Oval barrel designed to create classic deep waves with movement
  • Cool tip designed for more comfortable curling
  • Safety stand for securing the tong on a hard surface while not in use
  • Patented tri-zoneยฎ technology locks in your curls with the right, even heat
  • Advanced ceramic coating specially designed for smoother curling
  • On-off switch and indicator press and hold design avoids accidental use during styling
  • Light & sound indicate on-off and ready to use
  • Sleep mode automatically turns off if left unattended for 30 minutes
  • Universal voltage and professional length swivel cable

To get the style I’m wearing in these pics, I used the how-to video in the sidebar on the ghd website. Basically, I worked in one-inch sections, wrapping them around the wand while holding it horizontally.

Somehow, miracle of miracles, I managed to avoid burning off my fingers! The heat-protecting glove that comes with the wand definitely helps, as does the overall design of the wand.

It fits comfortably in my paw, so it’s not awkward (you know how some big wands are). More importantly, I was able to do loose, screen siren-style ’40s waves the very first time I used it, and if there had been any sort of learning curve with a $245 iron, gurl, that would have been unacceptable.

I was able to get those waves quickly, too, in about 25 minutes, which is blazingly fast for the amount of vampire hair that sprouts from my noggin’.

And did I mention that the waves stayed in place for two days?

I may have even been able to stretch it out to three days if I’d used more hairspray and dry shampoo.

At $245, this thing is terribly expensive — there’s no way around it — but it’s easy to use, well-made, fast and awesome. If you have medium length or long hair, and you’re super picky about your curling implements, you might love this wand as much as I do.

If you’re interested, it’s available now at Neiman Marcus stores and online.

  1. Hey Karen the wand looks freaking awesom.. I am scared of using heat tols as I am very clumsy but you right we should keep trying new things ๐Ÿ˜‰

Teh curling iron is super expensive but the built, style and all the details makes it worth it all! ๐Ÿ™‚

I kind of liked the oval shaped wand then the regular round ones ๐Ÿ˜› .. and I am loving your softly curled hair.. <3

This would be so perfect for me for so many reasons.
    1. I love GHD, I have used their flat iron for years. If you register your tool and it stops working, they will replace it for free if it’s still covered by the warranty. It happened to me and they had no problem replacing it for me.
    2. I love clip-less wands, you already know that. I find it so much easier to use although I did burn my fingers using my Hot Tools wand a few times.
    3. I am all about loose waves these days. I think they look super chic and elegant.

The price though…It’s a lot of money. Maybe I will put it on my Christmas wishlist for next year, lol.

Anyways, it does look like a great tool and your hair looks fantastic!

      Hi Agata,

Yes! If you ever decide to grow your hair out then by that time it’ll be nice and long and perfect for the wand.

Now I’m eager to try more clipless stylers. ๐Ÿ™‚ Have a nice day!

I do not have a curling wand, but I do have a flat iron. What I noticed is after several uses, my already thin hair would feel even thinner. Do this curling wand damage hair that bad?

  4. Erin says:

I’m embarrassed to admit that is pretty much a year of my beauty budget. The results are nice but it’s complete out of my price range since I rarely use hot tools! I have 0 bathroom space too so it’s a double whammy. I don’t even have a place to plug in my 10-year-old Clarisonic!

Very pretty soft waves indeed. But I can get a similar effect depending on how fast/slow I used my straightner to create waves . PLUS my frizziness is gonna need a flat iron first anyways, so i’ll be passing on this one. But great to know that it works on your hair Karen! Also yes…what is it with dudes and long hair. le sigh!

Your hair looks great but it’s a big, fat NO for me and clip-less curling wands. I’m pretty coordinated with most things but I’m sure that curling hair around a blisteringly hot ceramic rod without scorching my fingers isn’t one of them! ๐Ÿ™‚ Also, my hair needs less color and heat treatment, not more. Lastly, the ends can never be properly curled and that would drive me kind of crazy. Geesh, that’s a lot of complaints on a Wednesday afternoon, without even mentioning the price. I do realize that no one is forcing this curling iron on me. HAHA! And I’m glad you’re loving it! ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. Debra says:

Just think of it as an investment – in you, not in the curling wand!

Need I tell you the story of the heated curling iron that was set down on a bed . .

A friend did it — yes, it really was a friend!!

Anyway, it comes with gloves?! And it’s cheaper than Louboutin shoes — which then lead to visits to the chiropractor.

  8. Mary says:

I have been dying to try some ’40s waves since I saw Emma Stone’s retro-perfection look at the Oscars. I love that this is a clip-less wand too. Great post! x

  9. My dream hair style, and I never Managed to get it right… Maybe I should invest the money to fulfill my dream. But I just promised my hair to keep it safe from color and heat If it only started growing, so…
