Hair model Tabs the Cat…
I’ve been wearing my normally wavy hair straight lately and waiting a few days between washes to extend the life of my blowouts. To prevent my scalp from getting too funky with excess oil, I’ve been reaching for Rene Furterer Naturia Dry Shampoo, my fave dry shampoo, which also gives my roots a nice lift.
The problem: Naturia costs $24.
Ouch! Time to find a less expensive alternative…
And maybe I have. Suave Professional Dry Shampoo refreshes hair “as well as Rene Furterer” — at least that’s what it says on the side of the bottle. 🙂
Not even considering the fact that it only costs $3 (compared to $24?), the stuff is pretty good. Then when you DO consider the price, it’s downright amazing! First, there’s how fast it works. Some dry shampoos leave a white cast on my dark hair, particularly around the roots, and take forever to work in and brush out. Suave Pro deposits what looks like a bit of white powder on my roots when it’s applied, but after a few swipes with my brush the white powder disappears. Because it works so fast, the product has been saving me a a few minutes every time I use it instead of Naturia.
Suave says mineral clay helps the product absorb oil AND odor. Now, I wouldn’t want to wait so long between washes that I could smell my hair, but I guess it’s nice to know that Suave’s got my back.
I think I’m partial to Naturia’s floral fragrance, but my nose likes Suave’s light citrus scent too. My roots do get a little more lift with Naturia, but again — $3 compared to $24.
PRICE: $3 for a 5-oz. bottle
AVAILABILITY: Available now at drugstores, grocery stores and also online

How was the rest of your Tuesday?
Mine wasn’t bad. Right now I’m just settling down to re-watch last night’s episode of Being Human (yep, it was THAT good). Did you watch it? Pretty great, right? I mean, as far as vampire/werewolf stories go.
What’s up with all the vampire politics anyway? It must be a side effect of immortality and playing mind games with the same folks, century after century. Forget that. Sign me up for team werecat instead!
What are you up to tonight?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
Rae says
Okay – between that ingredient list and your raves… I’m sold! *immediately starts scouring drugstores*
Karen says
Hope you find it soon, Rae!
Vanessa says
Yay! I cannot wait to try this :-D. Thanks for the review, Karen!
Karen says
You’re welcome, Vanessa. 🙂
dani@callitbeauty says
sounds like a better product than tresemmé’s dry shampoo (it was horrid) so i’m definitely on board. i hope it’s available in canada already! though, with our luck, it’s probably way more expensive :p.
Christy says
The Tresseme stuff is terrible! Every time I use it I feel like I’m about to pass out. I can’t wait to try Suave.
Karen says
I hope you give it a go soon! It’s really good.
Karen says
Can’t wait for you to try it!
dani says
I agree, tresemmé’s dry shampoo is HORRIBLE. It left my hair gross feeling and it made me look like I had dandruff. I am definitely going to give Suave a try. Thanks for the post!! 🙂
Kayeleigh says
Oh, I agree! Tresemmé’s dry shampoo doesn’t work. It makes it worse that when I started & it had only been washed the day before. Can’t wait to try Suave’s dry shampoo now! 🙂 Thanks Karen for the review!
Dao says
Yay! Tabs looks so regal in the pictures. I’m glad there’s another drugstore dry shampoo. I had the one from TreSemme and it wasn’t that good. Had to use a lot but hair was still sticky, yuck!
Karen says
He’s working his angles in these pics. You know he taught Tyra everything she knows, right?
Nadine says
The Suave Professionals line is a fantastic value. Too bad everything always seems so slow to hit drugstores and grocery stores in my area. (Maybe I’m just too up-to-date on new releases, thanks to blogs.) When I was traveling and had access to Walmart*, I snatched up the Suave Professionals Dry Shampoo and I love it! It soaks up hair grease, volumizes, brushes easily out of my black hair, doesn’t make me look like I have dandruff, and smells pleasantly citrus. I also recommend Batiste Dry Shampoo (available at Sally’s Beauty Supply), which is roughly twice the price of Suave’s — but still a good value compared to what’s available at Sephora.
*Yup, there’s no easily accessible Walmart in my area. Can you believe that? No Arby’s or Pizza Hut either. I live in a major metropolitan city where it’s surprisingly difficult to find some “nationwide” chain retailers and restaurants. There’s not enough land and rent is high. At least we have Target!
Karen says
I’ve heard good things about Batiste!
Jeni says
I’ve been wanting to try this but haven’t seen it in the stores yet, and I’ve checked about 4 places so far. I have the Tresemme dry shampoo and it leaves a sticky white cast on my hair, but it works well for volume when I spray it underneath my hair.
Karen says
Boo for the sticky white cast!
Kim says
I’m not surprised that this turned out to be great. I’m a fan of Matrix Amplify but also use Suave Professional’s version. It’s nearly as good and (I know this sounds horribly cheap, but) my local grocery store has BOGO sales on the stuff every couple of months, plus they double coupons up to $1.00. Seriously, the stuff is almost free and is really, really close in terms of performance. Go, Suave. 🙂
Karen says
Now THAT’s a sweet deal! You would so do my mom proud, LOL! She loves saving money.
Kim says
And to think, when I was in college, I didn’t know the difference between a coupon and an ad in the sales flier! 🙂
Annabella Freeman says
I have never ever tried a dry shampoo as I think my hair is way to greasy. I have to wash my hair everyday otherwise I just look like I’ve stuck my head in deep fat fryer. I know a lot of bloggers rave about Batiste over here in the UK. Maybe I should give it a go – all in the name of science of course!
Karen says
You never know until you try it. Who knows, maybe you’ll love it!
Kajal Couture says
I don’t need dry shampoos cuz my hair is so dry as it is, but the new Suave commercials really make we want to try this new line. Karen, have you tried any of the other new Suave pro products?
Karen says
Hi Kajal Couture,
I haven’t, but I think I will now. 🙂
Nina says
i think ill buy that. i really need to be good about not washing my hair everyday (or everytime i shower) …. 🙂
tuesday was quiet — we watched some tv, read some and then i crashed!
Karen says
What are you reading these days, Nina? I was up late last night reading another essay compilation.
Nina says
another markus zusak book called “i am the messenger” — its less sad than the book thief but still pretty heavy stuff. if i had young adults, they wont be reading this til they are about 25!
Vijaya says
Have you tried T3? Does this compare?
Karen says
Nope, I haven’t!
D says
Thanks for the review! I’ve been looking for this in stores, but haven’t been able to find it, yet. I LOVE that pic with Tabs’s paws and the spray! <3
Karen says
I hope you can find it soon, D!
Roxanna says
OK, you’ve convinced me to try the Suave! I have the Tresemme and the Ojon and I simply can’t get past the smell.
Karen says
Naturia is still my fave scent, but this is nice too!
Maeve says
Karen, have you been following the new American “Being Human” or the original one on BBC? The latter is waaaay better, FYI. =D
Karen says
Hi Maeve,
I’m watching the American version, but I’ve seen a few eps of the British one too. I like both, but I can actually follow along the American one. Sometimes the jokes/nuances of the Brit version get lost on me!
Beth says
I haven’t been able to find this either and I’ve been looking for over a month since I read about this line on another blog. (yours is still my fave, Karen!) Some of the products from this line are available, but not the dry shampoo. I’m scouring Wal Mart, Target, grocery stores and drugstores. No luck but I’ll keep looking!
Karen says
Thanks, Beth. <3
I hope you find it soon!
Marian says
This sounds great! Thanks for the review. I’m going to pick this up!
Karen says
You’re welcome. I hope you like it!
Liz! says
Thanks for telling us about this! Naturia is my fav but I’m always looking for a cheaper alternative. I didn’t have a good time withthe tresemme one, but I found one at Sally’s (different brand than batiste but don’t remember the name) but it’s $9.00. I’ll keep my eyes peeled for this one, you can’t beat a $3 price tag!
Fefe says
Soooo I tried Brocato’s Dry Shampoo once… and when I went to use it again a week later, I couldn’t get it to spray out at ALL. A lot of Brocato’s stuff does this. I tried the nifty hot water over the top trick but nothing helped. So I can’t give a good review on that product after using it once and not really knowing how to use it Lol. I did see that Suave is giving these away I believe tomorrow to the first 250,000 people that write a comment or something on their FB. Karen, you should do a video or at least a pic tutorial on how to use dry shampoo. Some of us would SO greatly appreciate that Lol.
Sarah says
Thanks for the tip about Suave on Facebook Fefe. I did this today and they said they would send me a coupon in a few weeks 🙂
Genevieve says
hi, karen! long-time lurker, first-time commenter 🙂 i’ve tried this stuff, and i’m loving it, as well!
i have (mostly) straight, long, kind of thick, uncolored, untreated asian hair that gets oily if i don’t wash it at least once a day.
i primarily bought this not to replace washings but to use as a volumizer, and it definitely works without requiring major effort (my definition of major effort is hauling out any sort of hair implement). i just spray and rub into the roots of freshly washed, air-dried hair.
definitely have to agree about it NOT leaving a white cast, which is amazing. i find the smell to be a bit much for me; it’s sort of like powdery pink grapefruit.
i can get over the smell, though, especially for the price. i found mine at my local target for about $3 (tax included).
Karen says
Hi Genevieve!
It’s nice to meet you. 🙂 Good to know that this is at Target… I’ll have to stock up so that I don’t run out, haha.
Cassie says
I’ve tried quite a few drugstore UK dry shampoos have hate the white powder ones so much. I’ve black hair too and the white never comes off entirely. The Umberto Giannini transparent one is a godsend but the scent’s getting on my nerves now. I might have to see if Suave made it across the pond. Even if the price’d be a tad higher, I don’t think there’d be such a jump from $3. *fingers crossed anyway*
Jessi (Lacquered, Painted, Polished) says
When I was younger (earlier teens) I hear about dry shampoo and thought it meant you could put just any white powder in your hair. Sooo… I got about a CUP of flour and worked it into my hair from roots to ends. I looked like I was wearing a powdered wig. My Mom was NOT happy with the flour flying around and coating everything in the house so she made me take a shower… where the flour promptly turned into little dough balls in my hair. Ugh… that was a nightmare. I’ve had an unwarranted distrust of dry shampoos ever since then!
Karen says
Oh no! Well, good news is the dry shampoos these days are definitely more user friendly. 🙂
Alka says
Thanks for reviewing this product Karen! I have been hesitant to use a dry shampoo because I have such dark hair but I am definitely going to give this one a try. Question: how do you brush this stuff in if you have curly hair without ending up looking like a giant q-tip? Or is this strictly for those straight hair days?
Karen says
Hi Alka,
I aim it directly at my roots in spurts, wait a minute or so, and then gently work the product in with fingers (no brushing) to keep the curls from getting messed up.
Trisha says
OMG! I have to go buy this right now. Right now! I ran out of my dry shampoo a while ago and am in dire need.
mkdallas says
I freaking LOVE this stuff! I was using Ojon Rub-Out spray dry shampoo, which was the bomb…but was also $22 or $24 a can. I got the Suave after seeing in reviewed online and all I can say is 2 MAJOR paws up! I’ve used it on really skanky hair (we’re talking sweaty workouts 3 days in a row) and it’s made my hair totally presentable. Who doesn’t love a drugstore steal, right?
vive says
I tried this, and I loved it the first time it actually worked… there is a manufacturing issue with this product because it only worked once. The second time I attempted to use it, it sounded like there was no product left in the can when I shook it and the nozzle wouldn’t even press down. I know other people have had this exact issue and have brought it to Suave’s attention via another blog. Just warning you guys! It is not a value any longer if you have to pay $3 per use!
Trude says
Well, hell, for $3 I’ll give any hair product a try! 🙂 I was also using Ojon (the $10 travel size Sephora always stocks in their check-out line), since I don’t use dry shampoo that often, but I’m willing to give this one a shot! I could never use any of the Naturia line because the smell was just too much for me.
rochelle says
nice review i saw this a month ago at my local target for like $1.97 and wanted to try it out myself! and it actually does work!!! =) i totally agree with your review!!!
Zeynep says
I’ve been hearing of dry shampoo spray for a while and I may just try this based on your review. I have thick, wavy dark brown hair and I’m partial to Finley Brown hair powder, but I can only get it really into my roots as opposed to all my hair. I’m excited to see if I can find this product and give it a try. Thanks!
lo says
I love this stuff! It’s actually the first brand of dry shampoo I’ve tried, but I’m already on my second can… and I love the grapefruity scent 🙂
Jen says
Awesome, Karen! I’ve been meaning to try dry shampoo, but I didn’t want to spend too much in case it totally bombs (I’ve never used it before), but $3? Why not? 😀
Rosie says
i have been loving the suave professional rosemary mint shampoo after years of Aveda. I am eager to try the dry shampoo. I love the Klorane version but it’s pricey and all gone. I also have the oscar biandi which smells good but it’s messy. I think there was even a coupon for Suave in the Sunday paper. I will look for it at Tar-jay. Love your reviews, Karen!
Sarah says
Has anyone tried Tresemme fresh start waterless foam shampoo? I read that this was a good alternative to normal dry shampoos since you don’t have to comb it out. I think it’s different than the Tresemme dry shampoo people have commented on but I’m not sure. I’ve been wanting to try it since I read about it.
The Suave dry shampoo sounds great. I’ll have to try this one. Thanks Karen!
Marilyn @ Lipgloss and Spandex says
I need to try this! I’ve tried the Rene Furterer Naturia dry shampoo, and the Oscar Blandi dry shampoo (not the spray one). $3 is a steal…
Roxanne says
The 3rd picture is too cute! Now I want to get a cat too!
Cristina says
Hi! Well I went and bought it! Ha! And I can see like dandruff On my scalp because of the product! Is it normal?
Chelsea says
Your blog is a favorite for a LOT of reasons, but Tabs is certainly one of them! If I ever start a blog, I’ll have to include Quincy (my bunny)
Kasey says
Guess I’ll try it, I have the same problem with looking like the Bride of Frankenstein after using some of the spray-poos. I’ll make sure I test it out right before I’m going to wash to be on the safe side, my hair is short and the brush through may not have the same effect.
Amanda says
Eww! Aluminum starch! Isn’t that the pore-cloggin stuff found in anti-perspirants? If that wasn’t one of the ingredients, I would love to give this stuff a try on my (very oily) hair. 🙁
Slightly disappointed. Looks like it’s back to the corn starch brush-out for me.
Chanelle says
I LOVE Being Human! Are you watching the UK version or the American version? I much prefer the UK version, though to be honest I haven’t given the UK version much of a chance.
L says
I adore dry shampoo, so when I saw your post about a new $3 kind, I immediately ran to get it. I have to say, I’m IMPRESSED! I have the Oscar Blani powder & spray as well as the Tresemme Fresh Start spray, and I like Suave’s the best! Here’s my take: Suave’s is the lightest of those 4, so although it’s not as tough against grease as the others, it definitely leaves the least white residue. If you really want to extend the life of your blowout, use a bit of the Suave every day (rather than trying to use a ton once things look bad). I think I’ll still reach for the heavy-duty stuff (i.e. the others) in emergency situations, but Suave has provided exactly what I’ve been looking for in an everyday product. Yay!!!
Anita says
it works well but the packaging is defective and even when i put some tape over the nozzle my bottle ran out within a few days. after using it i can hear it slowly spritzing the stuff, and its gone after like 3 uses. this is my second bottle and it’s near empty, i’ve had it for 2 days 🙁 and my other one i had for about 3 days and it was completely empty :(( im not buying it again
Megan says
I hate washing my hair everyday.. it is so long it takes forever to comb out then dry then straighten… I would love a product to stretch out the days between washes! can’t wait to try it.
Kathryn-Ann says
I have never tried a dry hair shampoo before but at that price I can’t wait to try Sauve’s product. Thanks for the input on it.
