El Hub threatened to revolt over my hoarding of hairstyling products in the bathroom, which he compares to the beauty aisle at Rite Aid :), so in the name of marital harmony, it’s time I find more hair products that multi-task.
My latest discovery: Straight Sexy Hair Smooth & Protect Flat Iron Hairspray ($14).
Like four products in one, it’s a Vitamin B5-packed aerosol to protect hair from flat iron heat damage while smoothing out frizz, adding shine and moisture and imparting soft, touchable hold (smells faintly of coconut). All that, and it works on either dry OR damp hair.
I’ve been using it with my flat iron, spraying a section of dry hair with a light, even dusting before running the section through the iron. When I’m finished, my hair looks shiny, smooth and stays stick-straight for days (or until my next shower).
Just for the heck of it, I gave it a try with my curling iron, and wouldn’t you know it? It works wonders on curly styles, too. 🙂
In a perfect world, however, I would make two minor product tweaks: 1) I wish it came in a regular old spray bottle (better for mama earth), and 2) I wish it came in a smaller size.
Being the multitasking powerhouse that it is, I would love to bring it with me on trips. Too bad the 4.1-oz bottle means it can’t hide in my carry-on bag. Boo for inconvenience!
All told, I think Smooth & Protect has lots of great stuff going for it, and if your flat/curling irons are integral parts of your getting-ready ritual, you might want to give it a go. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A

Hi Karen! This stuff sounds great, but I’m curious about the fragrance. Does it have one?
Karen says
Hi Sarahc,
It smells kinda like coconuts, but it’s very faint and fades fast.
Babybubblz says
Oooh I’m going to check this out! I’m don’t own too many hair products since I’m not sure what all the different products do >< So this multitasker might work for me too!
Karen says
Sweet! Do you use heat products often?
Patti says
Hi Karen,
I don’t think I’ve seen this product before, can you find at the drugstores/Target??
Karen says
Hi Patti,
I’ve seen it at specialty beauty stores, like Pure Beauty, but not at Tar-ghay. I’ll keep my eyes peeled when I go there… I have to pop by to pick up a few T-day things so I’ll let you know if I see it!

Just curious – have you tried Redken’s Spray Starch? It makes my hair slighlty harder than I would prefer, but it does amazing things for humidity control and keeping heat-styled hair in place and sounds very similar to the Sexy Hair spray. Since I got my hair cut very short, I’ve even been using it as a texturizer by spraying it in before I blow dry (I have a lot of hair, but it’s somewhat fine). And it comes in a spray bottle! However, it smells kinda nasty. Thankfully the smell dissipates, but it’s not the funnest thing to get a whiff of those fumes while your spraying your head with the stuff.
Karen says
I haven’t tried it. Even though I really like having soft hair (was traumatized by the late 80s/early 90s), I might try it one of these days just for fun.
How short did you go?
Shannon says
uber short! Almost (but not quite) a pixi cut. Initially I could even faux hawk it 🙂 It’s very fun. I do miss my long hair sometimes, though… oh well. It’ll grow out eventually!
Tavia says
This is a great news Karen! I definitely must try this product. My hair is very thin and I use the flat iron everytime I wash my hair so even though my Wella Lifetex is a hair savior this multitasking product of yours sounds divine. The only problem is …that I don’t think I can find it here….:((

Oh noes! Hmm, maybe there’s something in your country that’s equivalent to it. Do you get Redken? Shannon mentioned there’s a similar product called Spray Starch.
Tavia says
I don’t have Redken also and I’m thinking about some products from Kerastase. I don’t have so many options 🙂

I’ll be picking this up at CVS ASAP! I’ve been straightening my hair almost every day lately, and the heat protecting spray I’m using now just isn’t cutting it 🙁
You mentioned Redken Spray Starch to Tavia – I’ve heard great things about it! I’ve been trying to find some myself…

Good to know this is at CVS! I haven’t seen it there…

Ooh, that sounds great! I love the Straight Sexy Hair shampoo and conditioner, so I have high hopes for this one ^^ Mind checking if it has -cones (mainly dimethicone) and/or parabens? I’m avoiding both right now, which is SUPER hard when it comes to hair products. It sucks, but I’m hoping I’ll be rewarded with clear skin!

Karen says
Sorry, hon, it’s chock full o’ -cones. 🙁
Rae says
Ahh darn 🙁 This no-cone thing sucks!

Straight Sexy Hair has a leave in conditioner in a spray bottle. I like it , but I have very fine hair so I have to be careful not to overdo it.

Interesting. Does it work well as a heat protector?
Glosslizard says
That sounds terrific! I’m going to start trying to learn how to use a curling iron, so this will be one of the first tools in my arsenal! Thanks! 🙂
Karen says
Oh cool! Do you have one already? I like the ones with a big barrel.
Tiffany says
I love this line!

What are your faves?
amy says
LOL! How could your husband be so cruel and not let you have more variety in hair products! It is for “research.” 😉 My favourite straightening products are La Coupe Shine and Smooth straightening balm, which I use for wet hair or La Coupe Shine and Smooth straightening spray which I use for dry hair. These also work as a heat protector too.

Really glad you reviewed this. I’ve been searching for a new heat protectant that also does a little more and this sounds perfect!

hmmm… Could anyone compare it to the tresemme heat protection spray? Just curious how the two differ 🙂

I have very long, straight, fairly thick hair. It’s naturally light brown, but I’ve been highlighting it heavily for years, and the ends have recently become extremely dry and difficult to manage. The underneath part that lies against the back of my neck is especially difficult and, after combing, retangles itself within minutes.
I was beginning to think I’d have to cut the bottom 6 or 7 inches off and start over, but my colorist (who, by the way, works in a salon that doesn’t carry Shielo, so I figure she’s being objective) recommended the Shielo Hydrate line (both Shampoo and Conditioner). I figured it was worth a shot, even though the combined cost of the retail sized shampoo and conditioner is about $47.
My hair definitely appears MUCH smoother, even when air-dried. (However, I’ve noticed that continued use is necessary, because when I use anything else my hair doesn’t look nearly as good.) I leave the Shielo Hydrate conditioner in for 5 minutes as the label directs; thoroughly combing it through in the meantime seems to give the best results. With both the Shielo Hydrate shampoo and the conditioner, a little product goes a long way (in contrast to cheaper drugstore products).
