Happy Saturday, gals. How’s it going? What do ya think of these solid perfume sticks by Crazylibellule and the Poppies ($18)?
I should have stuck my hand or something in the picture to give them some perspective, but they kinda look like chubby little lipstick tubes. 🙂
Diverse fragrances
Developed by Sephora co-founder Isabelle Masson-Mandonnaud, each of the 29 unusual fragrances contains a mix of notes like dark chocolate, Tiare flower and ginger. Because they’re generally light, like eau de toilettes, they’re designed to work alone or layered with each other (or other scents).
I’ve tried four of them — Chere Louise, Jeanne Voyage, Josephine Jonquille and 26 Juin Ile d’Yeu — and love ’em all!
Fragrance profiles…
- Chere Louise: rose, pepper seed, iris, hyacinth, storax (a plant used for making incense), patchouli, guaiacum wood (a tropical shrub)
- Jeanne Voyage: Silician bergamot, amberwood, Spanish mandarin, heliotrope, violet leaves, rose sap, musk, nutmeg, iris
- Josephine Jonquille: Tiare flowers, patchouli, black chocolate, jasmine, lemon, ginger, cardamon (an herb from the ginger family)
- 26 Juin Ile d’Yeu: orange, vanilla, jasmine, plum, black pepper, lily of the valley, peach, musk, wood, rose orange blossom, cardamom, orange
Light and subtle
These are the kinds of perfumes that work great when I just want a lil’ something-something, like for those times when El Hub leans in to snuggle.
The tube makes them kinda fun to apply. I’ve been swiping the sticks (which deposit a thin, slightly waxy film) on my wrists, neck and between “the girls,” taking a minute afterward to thoroughly massage the film into my skin.
The scents seem to last about half the day, but the sticks travel well and they’re a blast to apply. So far I’ve spotted them online at Sephora, Beauty Habit and Crazylibellule.com (LOVE the music that plays on the site), but I haven’t seen them in any stores yet. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A
Friday night alien antics, etc.
District 9 took a lot out of me last night…
The story centers around a massive humanitarian effort to shelter more than a million starving humanoid/insectoid aliens who become stranded on earth after their mothership hovers to a halt above the city of Johannesburg in South Africa.
(Stay with me.)
It’s far from your average aliens vs. humans shoot ’em up and delves into a slew of social issues in some fascinating ways, but it’s also a lot heavier than I’d bargained for and twisted my stomach in knots!
I’m not sure what to compare it to (maybe 1988’s Alien Nation)… Overall, I like and admire the film, but it’s definitely not my idea of a light Friday night popcorn flick.
How’s your weekend coming along? Doing anything fun tonight? I think I’m just gonna stay in, paint my nails and watch The Craft, which I Tivoed last night. 🙂
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
Kelly says
Oh Karen I love The Craft! It’s so ridiculous and goth. I love all the dark lipstick and eyeliner Fairuza Balk wears, she is one of my favs! 🙂
.-= Kelly’s last blog post… Where Am I?? =-.
Karen says
Hi Kelly,
Yeah, what ever happened to her? She was really great at being goth and scary!
TerriB says
Hallmark movies tonight; certainly no heaviness there (practically floating in syrup now).
Love, love Crazy Libellule stick in Encens Mystic. It is sold at a great little shop here in West Michigan, but nearest Sephora is almost three hours away. Crazy indeed.
Would scent my house in Encens Mystic if I could. (Hoping your home/moving journey is going well and not causing too much stress, BTW.)
Karen says
Hi TerriB,
I ended up watching Hallmark movies last night, too!
Did you watch Wedding Days? The syrup ran thick in that one, but it was just what I needed.
Marley says
I smelled them today at Sephora! I wasn’t terribly impressed, but I haven’t liked any of the solid perfumes in this line. They all seem to be a little too “complicated” and end up smelling funky on me- either way too sweet or way too musky. I ended up getting two by Pacifica in Lotus Blossom and Blood Orange- and they were the price of one of the other sticks!
.-= Marley’s last blog post… Turpentine Creek =-.
Karen says
Hi Marley,
Oh, I haven’t smelled any of the Pacifica scents. I’ll put ’em on my list!
ines + cha cha says
gotta try these.
i like the idea of a stick version of a solid that you swipe on… i have a pet peeve with pots of lip balms and solid perfumes that you have to dig up.
what’s the strength like? most solids i know are somewhat subtle…
you should try LUSH solid perfumes. they’re different and organic/vegan!

Karen says
Hi Ines + Cha Cha,
They’re pretty subtle and last about four hours.
One of these days I’ll make it into the lush store! There’s on in SF but I just never think to go in… I get very overwhelmed by the scent at the doorway.
Kate & Zena says
I’m going to continue stitching my rows of squares together for my mum’s quilt. I only have six more rows than I have to decide what I’m going to use for the back. I’ve gone through three spools of thread! Who knew I would go through that many spools of thread. I actually ran out of blue thread and am using pink. Thank God all those seams are not going to be seen!
Hm, I should paint my fingernails too. I’ve gone lacquer less on them the past few days after I took off Blue Me Away on Wednesday. I was started to pick off the nail polish! Apparently, I just don’t like the color all that much. There’s nothing worse than absentmindedly picking off your nail polish.
Zena went on an extra long walk today. We went on a longer walk because she was doing so well sitting! She sat at every corner when told once except once where it took three times. Lo! The stubborn terrier can be taught!!! She went rolling in the wildflowers again so she sorta smells like pollen. Ich. I just gave her a bath! Maybe a good brushing will help a bit. She’s in need of brushing a la Furbuster!
Karen says
Hi Kate & Zena,
Your pup has such a personality. She sounds like a joy to have around — except when she’s covered in pollen, LOL!
What color did you end up painting your nails?
Mariah says
I loved District 9, I mean it had obvious parallels to Apartheid, and showed just the worst of what humanity had to offer. But I love good scifi! And the story was touching.
I hope it gets some awards for it’s great story!
Karen says
Hi Mariah,
I enjoyed the story as well. I can’t believe that the director hadn’t done any big films before this one. Talk about some serious game…
Marilyn says
Karen, now I’m dying to try those solid perfumes! Next time I go to Sephora, I’m going to have to take a sniff tes 😛
I’m intrigued by District 9 because it’s not a shoot ’em up type movie, but I’m still a little too chicken to actually go and see it. Since I just got back from a slightly stressful family dinner, I think I’m going to paint my nails and relax 🙂
Karen says
Hi Marilyn,
Yah! I hope you find a scent you like. They’re fun for days when you don’t want something heavy.
How was your night? Did you paint your nails?
Tavia says
I never tried solid perfumes, but is always a first time :).I like the notes from Josephine Jonquille. Maybe I will give it a try soon.
.-= Tavia’s last blog post… Lancome Mascaras review- Which one is your favorite? Hypnose, Fatale, Definicils or maybe the new Hypnose Drama =-.
Karen says
Hi Tavia,
They’re fun. 🙂 They’re much more subtle than regular spray perfumes.
Solé says
Those perfumes sound heavenly and the packaging is super stylish. My sister has a little homemade perfume business that she sells on Etsy and she made me my first solid perfume. I take it with me everywhere it’s so convenient. I hadn’t really paid attention to solid perfumes before that but I really like them now. And you don’t really risk over-applying like you can with sprays.
I saw District 9 last night too and it was so not what I expected. I mean the movie was brilliant, and I thought the story was amazing, but you’re right, it was heavy. I am recommending it to people but I don’t think I could sit through it again myself. What I especially liked was how the story really centered around the characters.
Karen says
Hi Sole,
I don’t think that I could sit through it again, either. My stomach was literally in knots the entire time. The story was most excellent and the characters were so well developed … such great sci fi!
Karen B says
Those perfumes look awesome. I’d love to get one for my mum’s birthday tomorrow but yeah. No Sephora, boohoo.
I’ve worked yesterday and then helped my mum prepare the party for tonight while watchign Sweeney Todd 🙂
Karen says
Hi Karen B.,
How was the party? What did you end up getting your mum?
Rachel says
Love the packaging. The perfume descriptions sound delish.
For my Saturday day plans, writing and doing surveys if I have time. Saturday night plans, MAN!, I’m having some TV overload. 9PM TRUE BLOOD, 10 PM HUNG, Taping MAD MEN. Yep, I still have a VCR, what what? Kickin’ it real old skool! I might watch Mad Men or Hung on On Demand though, not sure which I want to miss for tonight and see later.. Decisions, decisions!
Karen says
Hi Rachel,
What did you think of True Blood? I can’t wait for tonight’s episode!
LOL, we still have a VCR, too!
Kate & Zena says
Karen, I completely forgot to paint them! I was too busy finishing off one side of the quilt. All I have to do is pin the two sides together and sew them together so I may get to it tonight.
Louise Gray says
How cute are they!!! Oh, course, you know that I will choose my namesake Chere Louise. On Valentine’s Day two years ago, Stila came out with a lipstick called “Louise”. Dear Hubby and I walked over to our local Sephora (yes, you read right. I live two blocks away but I keep myself in check.) to buy me a gift. I asked for the lipstick. He said, very drily, “If it was called toe jams would you still want me to buy it for you?” Smarty. I will have to try all of the them since you have described them spendidly. I am so glad that you are telling us about fragrance finds. I have two that I have discovered but have not sampled yet. Have you sniffed these two by MAC-one, which I am interested in is called Naked Honey and the second intriguing one is called Africanimal. If you have smelled these, please let us know what you think. Well, I am off to get ready to watch the premiere of Mad Men. Have a great week. Louise (Chere Louise, lol!!!)
Marisol says
I wonder if Sephora stores have these goodies. May have to check next time I am in Sephora.
My Saturday did not turn out at all as what I had expected. i had planned on a low key day to do chores around my house and instead, I ended meeting my new neighbors and drinking til the wee hours of the morning. It was no fun getting up this morning. Now I am anxiously waiting for True Blood to come on. Can’t wait!
.-= Marisol’s last blog post… Shopping is my middle name =-.
Patty says
You and me both, Karen! My heart was so, so heavy when I left the movie theatre. Kind of ruined my night, actually. Jury’s still out on whether or not I can bear to watch it again/recommend it to others.
Karen B says
The party was lovely, very cosy gettogether with friends and family. Good food, good wine, good company, what more can you ask for?
I’m getting her a massage. One of my friends is massagetherapist and she is amazing! 🙂
heyhey says
Re: D9, fortunately I knew what we were in for (not a two hour “bug hunt” ala “Aliens”/”Starship Troopers”), but I totes dug it. It reminded me a bit of “28 Days Later”– this great sleeper with no big names. Certainly not the “feel good movie of the year”, but I’m glad I saw it. Next week, tho “Ponyo” for sure– need something lighter! Although knowing Miyazaki, there’s gonna be some serious message in that, too.
Music says
I could do with those stick perfumes as I travel quite a bit. That way I can take as many perfumes as I like! 🙂

I’m a sci-fi girl, so I may want to see it.
