With autumn about to make its big debut, what’s one way to stay on trend without breaking the bank?
The Sonia Kashuk Limited Edition “Jewel of an Eye” Eye Couture Palette
Perhaps you’ve already stocked up on fall staples over the summer — a chic red lipstick, a black liquid liner, a deep plum (and) or berry gloss — and are saying to yourself, “Whee!” and asking, “What else can we put in there?”
Throw some jewel-toned shadows into the mix
Ya know, for emerald, amber, amethyst and sapphire smokey eyes. All are so, SO apropos with knee-high boots, tweed blazers and snuggly, chunky knits.
Ah… I can almost hear the leaves crunching beneath my feet and Tabs whining because of how chilly it is outside (too chilly to go for his daily walk). Maybe we should get matching turtlenecks — my cat and I — because that’s what I really need — to give my neighbors another reason to think I’m a crazy cat lady. 🙂
As far as fall makeup, I suppose we could hunt and peck for jewel-toned duos and trios, or spend an arm and a leg searching for “the perfect combo,” but who has time for all that?
Try this: tell your hubby/honey/Ryan Gosling that you’ll be back in 10 minutes, because we’re going to Target to check out Sonia Kashuk’s new “Jewel of an Eye” Eye Couture Palette ($19.99).
Okay…make that 30 minutes. We both know that Target is a time warp. We’ll never get out of there in less than 15.
12 pans of shimmer
This 12-pan palette of intense, shimmery shadows pulsates with possibilities for trendy jewel-toned looks, and it’s RAD.
Craving colorful eye looks?
Sometimes I might wear just one of these shades by itself (like the dark purple shadow in the first row — my fave!), but this palette is perfect for more complicated looks and smokey eyes. There are so many great color combos here, and the shadows blend easily and last through the day with the help of an eye primer.
Jewel of an Eye is one of those palettes that just works in so many different ways. No matter which two shades I wear together, the combinations always work. I’ve even mixed and layered colors together to create custom shades, which is a lot of fun when you have an hour or two at home to just play.
Jewel of an Eye shines, and its shadows catch the light, but the shadows in Sonia’s Moroccan Dunes eye palette shine even brighter.
Any potential problems with this palette?
Just one minor one I can see: I do detect a small amount of fallout from these shadows. Not so much that it’s a deal breaker for me. Just something to keep in mind.
The final word
This is a great little palette, and seriously, I can’t believe it costs less than 20 bucks! I think it’s easily on par with products from Too Faced and Urban Decay.
Go on with yer bad self, Sonia! This jeweled palette’s a gem. 🙂

A little light reading…
Greetings and salutations on this terrific Tuesday, friend!
Got a book recommendation for ya… If you like thrillers and mysteries, check out Dark Places by Gillian Flynn.
Could. Not. Put. It. Down.
I also read Flynn’s Gone Girl earlier this year and couldn’t put that one down, either. I liked Dark Places just as much.
The book stars Libby Day. As a child, her mother and two sisters are murdered in what the media dub “The Satan Sacrifice of Kinnakee, Kansas.” Libby survives and achieves fame when she testifies that her 15-year-old brother, Ben, committed the act.
The plots weaves back and forth between the night of the crime and the present day, 25 years later. Libby is drawn back into the events of the murder when a group called the Kill Club, a group obsessed with investigating notorious crimes, finds her. The club suspects Ben’s innocence and hopes to discover proof to free him.
It’s a quick, suspenseful read — dark in some parts, so be prepared for that. All in all, though, I loved the story and the writing. Gillian Flynn’s got game.
Have you read any good books lately?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

These look amazing!
Karen says
Hi Beauty Glow,
It is amazing. Are you a Sonia fan?
Katherine M says
Love Sonia Kashuk, especially that Moroccan Dunes palette. I need to get some more of her palettes in general – they are affordable, and the colors are easy to wear but vibrant. I think her palettes are also good for work – they add a pop of color without making the eyes look too runway or artsy for work/professional environments (as much as I love Urban Decay, only some of what I own by them is professional-appropriate).
Karen says
Hi Katherine,
Yeah, Moroccan Dunes is one of my all-time Sonia faves, hands down. Totally Chanel-esque.
Have you tried her 12-pan matte palette? I have that one too and it’s great. It works really well with this one.
kim says
I have been fighting the urge to buy this for over a month. It is so pretty in the package, but i was suspicious of the quality. I already bought the new SK brush set with the magenta bristles, and they are so nice. Looks like i will be picking this up tomorrow!!
Karen says
Hi Kim,
It’s a great lil’ palette. Have you tried her 12-pan palette of mattes? I like that one too.
kim says
I went to pick up the jewel pallet after work, and saw that there is a new 12 pan palette of shimmer neutrals. So I grabbed that as well. They are both so gorgeous and the swatches are top notch. I was trying not to buy any more shake until
Karen says
Hi Kim,
I have that review post planned to go up this week. 🙂
Aditi says
I’m definitely heading to Target today to pick this up! Between this and the fact that Target now has NYX as well, I shall have a very fun afternoon, LOL!
Karen says
Hi Aditi,
Have fun at Target! 🙂 Let me know if you find anything cool.
Lorraine says
Oh, Karen, how you tempt us! I would love to pick this up, however, I am talking myself out of it due to the fact that I had to have UD Smoked last fall and have never been brave enough to do a jewel toned smoky with it, though I adore all those colors! Please do a FOTD jewel toned edition tutorial to help the color-shy combat our fall fears. Color for eyes is a huge fall trend, if we believe the September fashion bibles.
Karen says
Hi Lorraine,
YOU CAN DO IT! Have you tried wearing a single shade on your lid and sweeping a matte neutral brown or beige into the crease? That’s the easiest (and least scary) way I can think of.
Kiss & Make-up says
I have to admit that this is the first I’ve heard of this brand. But ooh la la, that palette looks fantastic, I love the colors.
Karen says
Sonia Kashuk is a big drugstore line here in the US. She has some really great things at affordable prices. Here’s her website to give you an idea:

I love the look of this palette!
I’m currently reading The Cutting Season by Attica Locke. It’s a murder mystery/mini history lesson all in one. In certain parts, I actually felt my heart racing! I definitely recommend it.
Karen says
Hi LC,
Thank you so much, I’m writing this one down too! I’ve been really into mysteries lately. They’re a quick read and keep me guessing.
Charisma says
I’m a Sonia fan when it comes to her moisturizing lipsticks with SPF but haven’t tried her Eyeshadows yet. Are they pretty sheer or frosted Karen?
Also, I’m intrigued with this book, I’ll definitely check this out. When it comes to the latest book I’ve read, it’s all about my class this semester book about Lab Management. Nerd! Haha.
Karen says
Hi Charisma,
These have a good amount of shine without going overboard with the frost. 🙂 HTH!
Danielle says
This looks like a great palette! And I like that the colors are fairly soft and not insanely intense.
Karen says
Hi Danielle,
Yup, totally wearable. Are you a Sonia fan too?
Agata says
The palette looks awesome. I had it in my hand last time I was at Target but for some reason I put it down. I feel like I should go back now…Btw, your hair looks lush!
Karen says
Hi Agata,
It’s really, REALLY good. There’s also a neutral palette that’s new for fall, but I think this one’s more interesting.
Funny you should mention the hair, I seriously need to get it cut.
How have you been?
Agata says
I have enough neutrals I think but this palette looks really versatile. I saw a pair of awesome boots at Target last time I was there so hopefully I can pick those up and the palette too 🙂
I have been kinda blah recently, not sure exactly why…On the bright side my weight is down by 36 lbs!
Karen says
Oooh, send me a link to your boots! I want to see them.
Sorry to hear about you feeling blue (I go through those phases too, it happens), but I’m glad to hear about your progress. It’s really hard work to lose weight, so kudos! 😀
Agata says
here is the link to the boots: http://www.target.com/p/women-s-mossimo-kodi-ankle-boot-taupe/-/A-14465375#prodSlot=large_2_30
And thanks 🙂 It is hard work but I am really proud of myself 🙂
Karen says
Oooh, those are cute! They look comfy, too. Oh great, now I have boot lust, LOL!
Yelena says
I am way too distracted by your gorgeous hair to look at make up right now. i also need a hair cut (split ends are running rampant) but i am stubborn and don’t want to cut because my hair takes FOREVER to grow back. yes yes i know, a trim won’t hurt but its at a perfect length where i dont need to style it everyday, i can rock my natural curls or a blow out and I’m scared to mess with that.
Karen says
Aw, thanks Yelena. I’ve been growing mine out for the past few months and need a haircut. I too have wavy hair and get terrified of cutting it! Totally feel your pain.
Jacque says
This is such a pretty palette. I picked this up along with the matte palette a few weeks ago. This post just reminded me I need to break them out again! Thanks for the book recommendation. I just finished reading Neil Gaiman’s The Ocean at the End of the Lane-a great read if you like fairy tale meets real world stories.
Karen says
Hi Lacque,
You’re welcome. And thank you for the Neil Gaiman recommendation. 🙂 Speaking of his work, have you seen this video for The Price?
The Price – The Original Animatic from Christopher Salmon on Vimeo.
Jacque says
Thanks for sharing this video! Makes me want to read the short story now. I can see why you liked this 🙂
Karen says
You’re welcome. 🙂 Every time I watch it, I have to pick Tabs up afterward and give him a good squeeze!
Heidi says
Oh boy, looks like I need to get over to Target soon!
As for my most recent read, it’s a must for all crazy cat ladies:

omg this is one of the prettiest palettes I’ve ever seen. Definitely getting this.
Karen says
Hi Amy,
I hope you love it! Let me know if you end up finding anything else interesting at Target. 🙂
hanna says
I think I’ll have to go get this one.
Karen says
Awesome, Hanna!

I went to pick up the jewel pallet after work, and saw that there is a new 12 pan palette of shimmer neutrals. So I grabbed that as well. They are both so gorgeous and the swatches are top notch. I was trying not to buy any more shadow until urban decay holiday comes out. But these were too pretty, especially for the price.
Karen says
Hi Kim,
I have the netural one lined up for a review soon. 🙂
Did you wear your palettes today?
Phyrra says
Very pretty. I love the blues, greens and purples.
Karen says
Hi Phyrra,
The brights are so you. I can see you working them out!
Alice Ann says
Ooh, tempting. Haven’t been to Target for a while, this may be the perfect excuse. I say yes to the matching turtlenecks, btw.
Karen says
Hi Alice Ann,
Haha, you know that would ROCK. Tabs of course would look better in his. He always does.
Amber says
What a pretty palette! I particularly like the purples and taupes. Loving your hair in these pics as well. So gorgeous! I vote yes for the matching turtlenecks too. Only, I can’t quite imagine putting a turtleneck on a cat. I’m sure such a fashion forward feline as Tabs, would not mind. 🙂
Karen says
Hi Amber,
It will take some convincing, but I think ultimately he’ll try anything in the name of style. 😀
Have a good afternoon/evening!
Kim says
Sonia puts out some great looking and inexpensive palettes. I’m always surprised by the prices when you do a review!
Both those books are on my list and you’ve just reminded me that I should be reading them sooner, rather than later! 🙂
Karen says
You should read them soon! I know that Dark Places is going to be made into a movie. If you lived closer I’d totally go with you.
Kim says
Ooh, awesome. Speaking of, are you going to see City of Bones? It was pounded in the reviews. Seems like Hollywood has a very hard time translating popular YA books into movies. Hunger Games was probably the exception, though I know there are a lot of people who love the Twilight movies, too.
I wanted to see Elysium but I know you weren’t thrilled with it. At this point, it might be another Netflix (thank goodness for that service!). 🙂
Angel L says
I really liked all of Gillian Flynn’s books. I am a serial reader. If I find an author I like I will read all of the books. 🙂
If you liked Gone Girl you might like “Before I Go to Sleep” by SJ Watson. It has a similar darkness to it (but completely different story)
I also really like Jonathan Tropper, particularly his books “How to Talk to a Widower” and “This is Where I Leave You”. I actually liked all of his books. Funny (Laugh at loud funny), endearing and heartbreaking.
Karen says
Hi Angel,
Awesome, thank you so much for all these wonderful recommendations! 😀
Do you ever read young adult books? I’m working my way through John Green’s novels. I got hooked on his stuff after reading The Fault in Our Stars:

Angel L says
I love YA books! I think the young adult genre currently has some of the best writers. I just downloaded your recommendation on my kindle to start reading at lunch. Thank you!
My lastest young adult favorite was “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak

I could cry. We don’t have this line in Ireland but my sister in law was in the US 2 weeks ago and got me the neutral matte palette. I now want this one and the new shimmery neutrals, just hope I can get them on ebay.
Rebecca says
I bought this earlier in the month and haven’t gotten around to using it much yet. I agree it does have some fallout, and despite being pigmented the shades I used went sort of “blah” on me. Maybe it will be better with another primer. I so want to love it.
kristin says
oh I just love your hair! you look absolutely stunning!
