Hey, ladies, TGIF! I’m feeling pretty good today because the sun is shining, the birds are singing, and my hair is somewhat under control. 🙂 It looks like it’s gonna be a great Friday.
This morning I was itching for some light, springy colors to reflect my mood, so I busted out the new Sonia Kashuk Freshness of Spring ($20) makeup palette and went to work.
The palette contains seven coordinating pink and purple products for eyes, lips and cheeks:
- A matte pink eyeshadow
- Matte purple eyeshadow
- Light pink glitter eyeshadow
- Creamy reddish pink lipstick
- Creamy rosy pink lipstick
- A sheer light pink gloss
- Matte light pink blush
Sonia even throws in some instructional cards describing how to create her “Freshness of Spring” look.
I liked the lipsticks and glosses right off the bat but was a little wary of the eye and cheek colors. They looked tres pastel to me, and pastels can look “Hello, chalky!” on girls with tan/brown skin.
From left to right: matte pink eyeshadow, pink glitter eyeshadow, matte periwinkle eyeshadow, pink blush
From left to right: creamy reddish pink lipstick, light pink lipgloss, creamy rosy pink lipstick, light pink eyeshadowÂ
After playing around with the products for a few minutes (that’s the *best* part, right?), the pastels proved to work better than I’d thought they would, actually flattering my skin tone, yay!
A few quick notes…
- The eyeshadows feel finely milled and blend easily, but it took me some time to build up the color to where it really showed. If you’re lighter than I am, that may not be an issue for you, but if you’re darker get ready for some serious layering.
- The blush applies more pigmented than the shadow does, and three layers produced a flattering, flushed rosy cheek.
- The lipsticks and gloss totally rock! Think uber-pigmented, with a faint brown sugary taste and scent that disappears quickly.
Straight up, I like this palette a lot.
Whoever came up with the color story had a clear plan in mind. The shades are coordinated to work together, and the instructions are easy to follow.
My one small issue?
If I could, I’d ask Sonia to add an eye base to wear with the shadows (I ended up using MAC Painterly Paint Pot with this look).
Sonia Kashuk Freshness of Spring Palette
Price: $20
Use: A budget-friendly makeup palette with pink and purple shades for lips, eyes and cheeks
Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B+
Seven products for $20 averages out to about $3 each, which is a total steal in my book. If you’ve been wanting to put together a pretty spring look and get your feet wet with a few purples and pinks, this release could be just what you’ve been looking for.
You might like the Sonia Kashuk Freshness of Spring Palette if…
- …you look good in light purple and pink colors,
- …you prefer to have all of your eye, lip and cheek makeup in one coordinated package,
- …you dig drugstore bargains.
Friday, haaay!
I’m so glad the weekend is almost upon us! Tonight I’m heading to San Francisco to have dinner with my two BFF’s, J-Money and C-Money. It’s been too long since I’ve had some quality girl time, so I can’t wait. I dunno where we’re eating yet, but if the restaurant is any good I’ll let you know.
How are you feeling today? Are you beat from this week or rearing to go?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
Kate & Zena says
Oh, you look beautiful! I don’t know if such pale, pastel colors would look right on my all ready (very) pale skin.
Karen says
Hi Kate & Zena,
Thanks! Hmm, I bet you could totally rock the purple. 🙂
How’s your Friday going?
Heidi says
I bought a sonia kashuk lip gloss a couple years ago. It was the perfect shade of nude; not too pink and not too brown. Her lippies are surprisingly good.
Karen says
Hi Heidi,
I agree. I’ve heard good things about her lip crayons — I hope to try those soon.
Tatiana says
Looks good on you! I’m scared to try that lilac, it might accentuate my eczema. Doesn’t hurt to try though.
Karen says
Hi Tatiana,
That’s the spirit. You never know, right? And if it looks dicey you can always wash it off.
Got any exciting plans for the weekend?
Nicole15 says
I must admit, I am extremely beat from this week. Both my children (girl, 4 & boy, 2) are very sick which has meant many sleepless nights this week for me & hubby. I greatly look forward to not having to get up to the alarm tomorrow.
BTW – not sure if you have noticed Karen or any of the other MBB Babes, but Target has some of the Sonia Kashuk products on clearance. Not sure if it’s all Targets or not, but worth looking into. I was able to get her powder blush in Lily (reminds me of NARS Orgasm) for $3.48 & her Angled Face Contouring brush (w/ the black handle) for $6.48. It was like 50% off. The eyeshadows, mascaras, cream/powder blushes, makeup brushes & more were on sale. Can’t beat quality makeup for that price.
Love the spring look on you! Very pretty 🙂
Karen says
Hi Nicole15,
Thanks! I was really pleased by the colors in this kit. 🙂
Oh, and thanks for the heads up on the clearance. I didn’t know about it. Yay, discount.
I hope that your lil’ ones feel better soon. Poor things!

WOOT! You look so….fresh! Spring-like! Pretty! Have a great dinner out 🙂
Karen says
Hi Sloan,
Thanks! I feel like spring when I wear these shades.
Have a good evening… do you have any plans?

Karen says
Hi Yadi,
Have fun getting your nails did. Let me know what color you pick! I’m hoping you’ll go for a bright yellow.

My Friday is going spectacularly! It’s 78 degrees outside with a breeze. The heat has come to the Midwest, finally! I took Ally and Zena for a walk for the third time in a row. They walk side-by-side now! It’s so adorable. Ally’s human mom has breast cancer so I’m helping out by walking Ally.
Karen says
Hi Kate & Zena,
That’s fantastic. I know you’ve been longing for spring so I’m glad it’s finally come.
You should take a pic of the puppies walking together! How cute! 🙂
Kate & Zena says
Karen,
Once I figure out how to take a picture whilet holding a lead in each hand, I’ll take one (I need to buy film anyhow). I keep one lead in each hand or Ally would overpower my weak left hand; I keep Zena (the non-puller) in the left hand and Ally in my dominant right hand so I have more control.
Once Ally gets better on the not-pulling-me-like-a-sled thing I may be able to put them both on one hand. She’s getting better on the not pulling me thing but she hasn’t quite mastered it, especially around other dogs or bunnies. I always have nice little climbing rope imprints on my right hand when I’m done!
I must look like the crazy dog-walking lady as I walk two very powerful dog breeds at the same time. Zena’s breed is known for bringing down adult pumas and jaguars in trained packs as small as 3 dogs! Huskies and German Shepherds traits are pretty well known to for pulling (Husky) and attacking (Germans).
Karen says
Hi Kate & Zena,
It sounds like Ally is improving… she’ll get there eventually! Maybe you three will have calm, serene walks this summer (you never know!).
Catherine says
Hmmm, I am still quite wary of those eyeshadow colors, but the blush and lipstick/gloss look fab on you!

Hi Karen 🙂
Seems like a good palette to have. I thought the colors looked a bit too cool, but then you do look very pretty, especially the eyes.

I like the look of the palette itself (I like how neat and orderly it looks) and the instructional cards. I also like the lip color.

this look is really pretty on you! 🙂 definitely deserves a repeat performance.
the model on the palette cover reminds me of Devon Aoki.

Your look just says spring! I didn’t even know Sonia K. came out with a palette..off to Target next week! 🙂
Kate says
Thanks so much for posting this review, Karen. Otherwise, I probably never would have known about this palette. After seeing this I picked it up at my local Target(I got one of the last ones) and absolutely LOVE it! It has all my favorite colors and I like it as much if not more than some of my $50, department store brands.
Karen says
Hi Kate,
That’s fantastic! I’m glad you were able to snag the last one. Which color in the palette is your fave?
Kate says
Oh, that’s a hard question! I think it was that pretty periwinkle shade that first caught my eye, but I love the pale glittery pink as well. It’s much more subtle than most of the glitter shadows out there.
Kate says
Meant to tell you, too, you’re photos are the best!
Ruthie says
I’m sooo glad I found your blog. Your skin color is very close to mine. I was wary about pastels also….but this pallete looks so good on you! I’m going to buy it now!
