Wearing Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Moonstone and Blush in Songbird
Why? Because it was the early 90s.
That’s what I say now when I think about some of the things I did back in my late teens and early 20s.
Matte makeup was all the rage, and I’d slip on my plaid, button-down shirt over a floral print dress and black leggings, blast my worn out Nevermind tape in the car on the way to school, slick MAC Paramount on my lips and attack the day!
My little makeup bag was filled with matte goodies, like eyeliner, eyeshadow and face powder (I hadn’t yet discovered blush), and almost all of it was in shades of brown, oy vey!
When makeup shelves and counters started twinkling with shimmery makeup later in the decade, it was a revelation! — like the first time I had a salad with blueberries in it from Panera Bread (so tasty!). Suddenly, the makeup universe opened up before me, revealing new looks and ideas I never knew existed.
Clockwise from the bottle on the left: Shimmering Skin Perfector in Moonstone ($41), Mineral Blush in Gypsy ($32) and Mineral Blush in Songbird ($32)
There’s just something about shimmery makeup that always puts a spring in my step. No doubt, I still lurves me my mattes, but sometimes I need the lift I get from shimmers, like when I feel like my skin looks a little blah, like when I have a cold or bad allergies, or when I’m just having a really rough day.
Sooner or later, though, there always comes a time when I have to get serious again, and out come the matte lipsticks.
This fall, Becca is introducing three new shimmery pieces built to add a little bounce to your step. 🙂
Shimmering Skin Perfector in Moonstone ($41)
This water-based pearly golden beige behaves as both a sheer liquid highlighter and a moisturizer, illuminating while moisturizing and diffusing uneven skin tone.
Becca also incorporated antioxidants, and broad-spectrum SPF 20+ to protect against 96% of UVA/UBD rays. Plus and plus.
But the shimmer is my favorite thing about it. The mica particles are almost imperceptibly fine, so the product doesn’t spotlight my pores as much as many other highlighters can.
Kinda pricey, but I love the results. When I layer it under NARS tinted moisturizer, I feel like I look 10 years younger! And so far it hasn’t broken me out (knock on wood).

Mineral Blush in Gypsy ($32)
I’m a sucker for Becca’s baffling Mineral Blushes. How can they be so easy to blend and yet so pigmented at the same time?? Awesome!
And I love their approach to shimmer. It’s never too obvious. Just right.
Gypsy, a delicate neutral pink with golden pearl, gives a soft, natural glow to cheeks.
It may be a little too light for some darker damsels, but light-to-medium skin tones might just fall in love.

Mineral Blush in Songbird ($32)
With a name like Songbird, it had to be great. 🙂 A new addition to Becca’s Mineral Blush line, Songbird is a warm, heavily pigmented peach pink with golden pearl, and seeing as how I love warm, peachy pink blushes, I was hoping Becca would hit this one out of the park…
They did!
Brighter and more intense than Gypsy, I think it still finds a way to look natural. Nothing clownish here, and if you crave even more color from Songbird, it’s also buildable.

Hi Agata,
It’s a small collection but so, so pretty. 🙂 Hope you’re having a lovely Friday!
Marina says
I still have to try BECCA’s mineral blushes and I also can’t wait to try their new opaque glosses. The new SSK perfector looks beautiful on you. I love mine (pearl) to death lol
Hope you are doing better today!!!
Karen says
Hi Marina,
Saw those online! They look great. 🙂
Have a wonderful Friday!
Nadege says
Gypsy looks so beautiful! Omg that is a heavenly shade for the cheeks. I’ve been meaning to try the skin perfectors as well, since I’ve heard so much about them.
Your hair has so much bounce in the pictures. Are you using hot rollers?
Karen says
Hi Nadege,
Believe it or not it’s dry shampoo! It adds to much lift to the roots. I’m using this one by Suave…
Sunny @ Mostly Sunny says
I need Songbird! I have Damselfly and I’m SO impressed! It’s my go-to blush this summer. While Songbird doesn’t scream autumn to me, it’s a color I’d totally wear all-year-round!
Karen says
Damselfly is a great color! One of my must-haves.
Lisa says
Moonstone is not available online. Does anyone know when it would be available online? So bummed, the nearest counter is a gazillion miles from my zip.
Karen says
Hi Lisa,
I just asked the Becca folks on twitter and am waiting for a reply. I’ll let you know!
Cindy (Prime Beauty) says
I adore the BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfectors–I have Opal and Topaz but I think the new Moonstone is my fav. I also have both of these blushes and along with Chanel’s Fleur de Lotus, they are very summer blushes!!! BECCA seems to do everything right!
Karen says
Hi Cindy,
Ooh, tell me about Opal and Topaz! Do I need them in my life?
Katherine G says
I don’t have anything by Becca yet, but it looks like a great line. I like that blush in Songbird because it reminds me of Nars Orgasm a little bit (my one and only true love when it comes to blush – I haven’t found anything else yet that works quite as well yet). You look beautiful as always (and I’m a sucker for shimmery makeup, too).
Karen says
Hi Katherine,
If you like Orgasm you might love Flowerchild:

It’s one of my go-to blushes!
Lulle says
Songbird wants to be mine so hard it’s gonna be tough to say no…
Karen says
Love that color, Lulle!
Nicole says
You’d think after living in Australia for almost two years I’d have tried BECCA by now. Nope. Tho, I did receive a free Eye Tint in Vicuna when I purchased Madison magazine yesterday. Any thoughts about application?
Karen says
Hi Nicole,
The Eye Tints are great for both a very subtle wash of color and as a base. I have and use Romanticism (it’s a mauve bronze) all the time…just pat a couple drops directly onto the lid and blend with a finger (prime with a colorless base like NARS if your lids are extra oily).
Let me know if you have any other questions!
Rita says
Thank you, Karen! This was expected but sudden :). I have 3 Becca blushes already, and I’m def going to get Songbird (and the rest of them I wish!).
Karen says
You’re welcome, Rita! 🙂
What Becca blushes do you have/love? I can’t live without Damselfly and Flowerchild.
Becca @ The Beauty Sample says
I NEED that blush in Gypsy…and the Moonstone highlighter. Oh god, that highlighter…I just got the shivers
Karen says
LOL, you’re so funny! I get the same way about highlighters too.
Kiss & Make-up says
Songbird is a great color, I could use a shade like this in my personal stash. I have plenty of colors in my professional kit but I never touch it for personal use, I’m such a goodie-two-shoes 😉
Karen says
Aww, you’re so good! Songbird is super pretty. 🙂
Nina says
Ahh the brushes are pretty, but how mineral are they? I cant use the ones MAC makes because they make my face itch, and im hoping these arent the same as those ones!
Karen says

Cindy (Prime Beauty) says
Hi Karen,
Opal is a beautiful peachy gold and Topaz is a golden bronze I use as a bronzer! Pearl is great for cool toned ladies too!
Lorraine says
Hi Karen. I have an oily t zone. Will this make me look more oily? And I’m more of an NC 40, maybe darker tanned filipino (super yellow undertone) now that it’s the end of summer, will this shade make a whitish cast? I’m really interested in getting this and my cousin is coming from NYC next weekend so hoping to get her to buy it for me :). Thanks!!
Millason says
This is truly one of the most beautiful highlighters I have seen! It is going on my wish list immediately!
Janna says
Thank you so much for this post!
May I ask what your colouring is? I am a MAC NW25/Chanel Beige 50 (south-east Asian tanned) and cannot decide which shade to get – Pearl or Moonstone! Would you be able to advise?
Thanks!
Janna says
Sorry, I meant Opal or Moonstone!
Onika Khatun says
Hi!
Because of the SPF 20 do you think it photographs well ie for weddings etc? Xo
