Shu Uemura Pink Collection: Pink Enough for the Afterlife

Published in: Makeup, Product Reviews

shu uemura pink collection

As a kid I was fascinated by pyramids and ancient Egyptian burial rituals. One day, I read that old school Eygyptians were buried with all the things they’d need in the afterlife. That gave me an idea: I listed all of the things I’d bring with me into MY pyramid for MY journey to the great beyond.

I think I needed to get out more…

Every once in a while (like today), I’ve revisited my list of afterlife necessities.

Permanent items on the list: Tabs, toilet paper and an endless supply of Strawberry Pop Tarts.

The latest additions to the list: Shu Uemura’s Pink Collection of lipglosses and lipsticks.

If I could take all nine Rouge Unlimited Pink Lipsticks ($23 each) and five Gloss Unlimited Pink lipglosses ($22 each) with me, my pink lip needs would be eternally covered.

What makes the new line so special? It’s the pink. Shu scientists created a new ingredient they call “Pink Hybrid Pigment.”

They claim it’s a perfectly shaped pigment particle able to produce unusual pink lip shades, with yellow and blue tints, previously unseen in the world of makeup.

shu uemura pink collection pk343

I’ve tested five of the shades so far. I couldn’t say whether they’re unlike any other pinks ever created before, but they’re definitely true pinks in every sense of the word.

  • Rouge Unlimited Lipstick in PK 369: A creamy, cool and bright hot pink with blue tint
  • Rouge Unlimited Lipstick in PK 343: A creamy, ultra-cool pale pink with blue tint
  • Rouge Unlimited Lipstick in PK 232: A creamy and warm pale pink with a yellow tint and silver flecks of glitter
  • Gloss Unlimited in PK 325N: A shimmery, cool medium pink with blue tint
  • Gloss Unlimited in PK 315N: A shimmery, warm dark pink with yellow tint

You know how sometimes you try on a pink lipstick or gloss that ends up looking more coral, red or plum than pink? These shades aren’t like that at all. First and foremost, they’re pink, with the blue and yellow tints adding subtly cool (blue) or warm (yellow) elements.

shu uemura pink collection pk315n

Like other Rouge Unlimited Lipsticks and Gloss Unlimited lipglosses I’ve worn in the past, the new Pink collection products apply with a mirror-like shine and vibrant pigmentation, and on my lips both the lipstick and gloss feel thin, slick (not sticky) and taste and smell faintly of orange.

In my book, pink lips are always in season. Thanks, Shu!

Mascara Misery: Day Two

I paid a visit to the dentist this afternoon, and now I’m totally dragging my feet. I’m TOW UP! I feel like I’ve been worked over in a fight. Visiting the dentist is one of my least favorite things in the world (no offense to dentists everywhere).

He used scary words like breakage and leakage, and I have to go back not one — not two — but THREE times to finish the work. Yes, I cried in the chair. πŸ™

At least my waterproof mascara worked (Stila Lash Visor).

The freaking out started when the dentist hovered over me with that creepy silver hook cleaner thingy… I saw it coming at me from the side!

I’m thinking I might have to make a quick trip to MAC to kill the pain…

How’th your Thoothday been?

Awww! You poor thing! I feel your pain… dentists can be especially unnerving (no pun intended!!) because you can’t see what they are seeing!! Hope you feel better soon, but when I had my wisdom teeth pulled out, the ONLY perk was that I was told to have ice-cream to keep the area cold and numb!! πŸ™‚ So try that if it helps…
    Take care!

    • Karen says:

      Hi Merylynmagic,

LOL, I dunno if I could handle watching what’s going on… maybe if it were happening in somebody else’s mouth, but not mine.

And yay for the ice cream perk! What’s your favorite flavor? I have a few: dulce de leche, jamoca almond fudge, pistachio…

  2. Alexzandra says:

Thanks a ton for posting these. They are more sheer than I thought they would be, but I’m still totally in love with pk369.

I knew you’d be able to pull off the pink lippies! And bar a couple of unpleasent incidents at the dentist regarding wisdom tooth extraction I’ve had pretty ok experiences so far *touch wood*

    • Karen says:

      Hi Paris B.,

Oh, I’m knocking on wood for you, too. You don’t want to end up crying in the chair like me, because runny eye makeup is never cute, ha!

  4. Apple Diva says:

    Sorry about the Dentist situation.

I love pink, but the light pink ones always look sheer on me as if I am wearing petroleum jelly or a clear clip gloss on my lips.

  5. Stacie says:

Oh, suck! I hate going to the dentist, too. I hate when they say they’re done with the creepy silver hook, then they go back and scrape some more anyway! And I won’t even go into the wisdom teeth extraction story. I hope all goes well! (P.S. The pinks are awesome!)

    • Karen says:

      Hi Stacie,

LOL! That’s SO TRUE! I hate the sound of the hook, too. *Scrape, scrape.* I’m starting to think silent dentistry may be the wave of the future…

  6. anners says:

is 232 in the description the same as 323 in the picture? these look tempting.

  7. Shefali says:

Karen you are hilarious!! I hate the dentist too. Last year I had so much work done – 2 fillings, 1 root canal, a crown lengthening, and a crown. It took 6 months of me visiting the dentist monthly to get all that damn work done. It SUCKED.

Anywho…that PK369 is HAWTNESS. I might have to invest. Thanks, as usual, for the bad ass review!

    • Karen says:

      Hi Shefali,

Holy wow, that’s a lot of time in the chair! I bet your teeth look great now, though. πŸ™‚

I hope you try 369! It’s my favorite out of the bunch.

  8. Citrine says:

I am loving pk369 at the moment!

P.S. I love visiting my dentist because every time they compliment on my teeth(not the ones at the back though)and go like “only 1% of people have teeth like yours” and yada yada yada… )

  9. Elle says:

Oh, Karen. I feel your pain. I’m overdue for a dentist visit…I had some bad memories of my childhood dentist (she used to watch TV while working on my teeth…not kidding) so I have to suck it up and get over it.

(I also loved anything Egyptian, and was fascinated by the whole “Let’s remove the brain by way of the nose with a big hook during mummification” thing. Yeah, I needed to get out more too!) πŸ™‚

These shades are gorgeous–they look great on you. I like PK369–it sorta reminds me of a more subtle (un-shimmery, I guess) version of MAC’s Strawberry Blonde lipglass from the Blonde Brunette Redhead collection. I love that lipglass, so I might have to check that one out. Good luck with the dentist visits!

    • Karen says:

      Hi Elle,

I can’t believe your dentist used to watch TV! That’s CRAZY! I am convinced my childhood dentist was a sadist. He enjoyed pulling teeth a little too much, me thinks.

Want to know something funny? I got a kick out of the brain removal out of the nose bit, too. πŸ™‚

      How have you been?

  10. Fie says:

I must be weird then. Haha I love going to the dentist! πŸ˜€

OH I saw the Pink Shu collection and all the colours were so bright. Maybe I’ll go pick some up later…

  11. Kate & Zena says:

Ack, I’m one of the few who get bored in the dentist chair. My orthodontist literally wrecked every single tooth that I had. I chose to have, instead of dentures at 16, extreme tooth reconstruction. Yes, I had Valium for the first billion times there (I went once a week). I just become incredibly fidgety after an hour and a half in the chair. I’m one of those people that need at least two shots of Novocaine to numb out an area too (the most shots of Novocaine I’ve had for one area is EIGHT; yes, eight).

I’m going to a new dentist on Thursday as my old one retired so I’m a bit nervous. I only need some of my fillings refilled but I hate the drills (noise) and the green phosphoric acid gel (taste. ew to the 10th degree). I’m pretty okay with the drills once I’m numbed out as I hate pain but the noise is awful. They need to invent silent drills. I need a silent drill. Phosphoric acid just tastes icky if you manage to swallow some of it. I did manage to get a burn on my chin from the acid too. I have no idea how it got there but I have the scar to prove it.

What kind of procedure do you need? You can always ask your dentist to prescribe you a sedative like Valium to help with your nerves. Of course, if you get a sedative, I’d say have El Hub drive.

The pink glosses are pretty but I have enough pink lipstick to last a few centuries, I think. My favorite is a Revlon one that’s the exact same dusty rose color as my lips. God, I love that lipstick. I haven’t worn it in a while though. Hmmmmm, I may have to break it out again. I’ve been into my Max Factor Lipstick in Sweet Tart as it’s a kinda bold pale pink. It’s fun to wear. πŸ™‚

    • Karen says:

      Hi Kate & Zena,

Good luck on your Thursday visit! I hope it goes smoothly. And good call on the silent drill… I’ll ask my dentist if there’s such a thing, LOL!

I’m going in for a few deep cleanings and some other stuff. They actually brought up the fact that they could use Nitrous on me and I was like, um, no. I’m a bit of a control freak…

Revlon makes some good lipstick! I was all about “Cherries in the Snow” back in the day.

Happy Wednesday to you and Zena!

  12. Glosslizard says:

Oh, sweetie! I’m so sorry about your dental misery! πŸ™ I know that can be dreadful!

The pinks, on the other hand, are fab! I’m loving 369 and 325!

    • Karen says:

      Hi Glosslizard,

Thanks, hun. Next time I go in I’ll have to do some yoga or something beforehand to get myself to calm down. Sigh.

You could so rock both 369 and 325 in a hot second!

  13. Marisol says:

ok so I just added those to my wishlist. Loving those colors.

  14. Shiny says:

Hey Kare-bear (sorry for the cheese)
Awww sucks about the dentist, it is a truly awful experience even with the nicest ones. I’ve been dragging my feet but I should book it since I will be without coverage at the end of the summer!

I am loving PK369, that is a hot pink! I will be for sure checking that out!

    • Karen says:

      Hi Shiny,

Aww, I love the cheese! πŸ™‚ Thanks for that.

If your coverage is going to be gone by the end of summer you gotta call your dentist. You never know if they’ll have to do extensive stuff… might as well get it over with while you have the coverage, right?

I agree — PK369 is smoking hot. I just wish it had a sexier name, LOL!

  15. Catherine says:

  16. thank god there are no dentist visits in the afterlife.

    im loving pk323.

  17. Sylvie says:

I don’t have an aversion towards going to the dentist despite having had 4 wisdom teeth removed (two at a time) in recent memory. The worst part about it was that he was a cocky guy who talked down to me (but don’t all French), he cut my gum open and used some electric saw to saw my tooth into little parts so that the tooth could be removed and then he gave me 6 stitches. His medicine aggravated my gastric condition and had me bed-ridden for a week and after that, to remove the stitches, he did a half-ass job of it (left half the stitches in cuz he forgot) and he wasn’t the most gentle guy in the world for the job.

And despite this trauma, I still enjoy visits to the dentist. Just not that guy. I guess the idea of coming out with clean teeth and no 6 months-old food particles stuck in between anymore is enticing enough.

Back to the lipsticks. PK 369 looks a little like Strayin’ (MAC HK) to me without the glitter.

  18. jojoba says:

i tried this collection in the store but the counter display has been replaced by the Painting Liners!!! they were removed to be with all other glosses and etc.

i didn’t see anything that’s interesting enough though. i prefer chanel glossimers than shu lip products.

I think you look great with these on esp. that first pink! love them on you, seriously.

maybe i have to double check them again??? *_*

  19. Bisbee says:

Karen – I LOVE the first one – PK369. Went right over to Sephora’s site – but they list that as opaque! It doesn’t look opaque to me on your lips – can you tell me more about that one in particular?

    • Karen says:

      Hi Bisbee,

Hmm, I probably wouldn’t call it opaque. On my lips I noticed a sheerness to it… I wouldn’t call it opaque, rather, semi-sheer and very highly pigmented. What else would you like to know about it? πŸ™‚

  20. YadiQ says:

    oh karen

i am loving all your childhood references – they bring me back to my dorky childhood lol

these pinks are so fab i gotta see them in person !

girl my behind went to the dentist on monday – my gums bleed during prof cleanings and they have no idea why my gums are in good health i have had a professional proactive treatment to help prevent gum disease etcetc

floss, brush and rinse with saltwater before mouth wash and guess what still bleed during professional cleanings

they rec me seeing a general dr to get extensive bloodwork may be my hormones out of wack or my thyroid – go figure with my luck

what was your final diagnosis? feel better – my gums still feel ripped after my cleaning – boo i am sensitive lol

    • Karen says:

      Hi Yadi,

LOL! I definitely was *not* one of the cool kids. Dorks rule!

You’ve gotta check these pinks out — I think you’ll love ’em.

I hope that your gums are okay. That must be very stressful to take care of them so much and still have them bleed on you.

Gah, basically I’m having some gum issues, so I have to go for two separate “deep cleanings” where shots are involved (boo). It also turns out that I’m grinding my teeth away because of stress, so I gotta get a mouth guard thingy. SEXY!

Anyway, apart from the bleeding, how did your dentist appointment go? Are you cavity free?

  21. YadiQ says:

woo hoo! sexy mouth guard lol i tried that for a while cause i was having excessive jaw pain it sucked – i am a grinder too

uggh i have been going thru this gum dilemma for 2 years its frustrating and has been hurting my pocket i go for cleanings every 3-4 months my insurance only covers 2 cleanings a year and the gum treatment (yes they are injections boo!) not covered at all

its been a long arduous rode but they say that your heart health is totally linked to oral health !

    good luck dear !

    • Karen says:

      Hi Yadi,

Do you still use your mouth guard? Have you found any ways to stop the grinding?

My friend does the same thing as you do — she ends up paying out of pocket for additional cleanings throughout the year. She says it’s worth it, though! I’m thinking about it…

Yah, I’ve read that your gums actually tell a lot about your heart health!

I’m about to go floss now, ha ha ha!

  22. faith says:

    hi karen!

when i read the post title at first, i went, huh? but i kept reading and have to say – girl you are too funny! i really enjoy your writing style~

i wish i could offer some adivise on your dental situation but you’re talking to a girl who has yet to return for the second part of her root canal!

love the pinks – i’ve been on the lookout for formulations that show up on my apparently pigmented lips and i think i may have to save up for a shu!

    • Karen says:

      Hi Faith,

      LOL, thanks! πŸ™‚

Oh no, good luck on that second part of the root canal… I hope that it isn’t too rough.

I’m so jealous of your pigmented lips! πŸ™‚ Hmm, one thing you could do to get colors to show up more is to first line and fill your lips in with a neutral liner first. I’ve been loving this one by Urban Decay called Naked.

  23. Rachel says:

Gahh. All of the colors are too pretty.

  24. cloudburst says:

I really like PK 369 – I also dislike the dentist, the last time I went they were 1 hr late and then the dentist was like ‘wow you really don’t like scaling”…like who does?!

    Thanks Captain Obvious!

  25. Elle says:

    Hey Karen!

HA! I knew someone else had to have gotten a kick outta that too. πŸ™‚

Yeah, she watched TV. It’s hard to explain, but the chair I used to sit in had this huge pole attached to it (in front of the chair) and on top of the pole was a platform, and on top of that platform was a TV. The best (worst!) part? When the reception on the TV went wonky, she would stop what she was doing, and mess with the antennas with a YARDSTICK. Mmhmm.

I’ve been ok! Still looking for jobs, but I’m getting to the point where I’m getting REALLY bored. Usually if I’m bored I’ll just troll around on the computer, but even that is getting boring, ya know? What about you?

  26. Merylynmagic says:

Hmm well that’s a toughie!! I like cookies ‘n’ cream, cherry vanilla, mango, the list is endless! πŸ™‚ and I also love most things in the Trader Joe’s dessert aisle.. Yeah I unfortunately have a sweet jaw not just a sweet tooth! πŸ˜›

  27. Maggie says:

    wow, they really ARE pink!

i think i’m gonna have to get one of these. πŸ™‚

  28. Kate & Zena says:

Ah, the lovely deep cleanings. I haven’t had one of those in about two years, I think. It’s all been reconstruction. I’m in the chair anywhere from 1-4 hours. I don’t use Valium anymore as all it does now is make me twice as fidgety.

Your dentist suggested laughing gas? Seriously? That’s pretty extreme. Most suggest Valium or another sedative in a low dose first before laughing gas. I only got 4mg of Valium because I’m immune to 2mg from doctors administering it during prolonged seizures.

Thanks for the luck. I’m packing the Nivea: A Kiss of Moisture lip balm with me. I can’t stand dry lips.

  29. Marina says:

    hi, Karen
343 and 323 look gorgeous! nice colors.
but to be honest, I don’t like the design at all πŸ™

i was reading your posts re: cavities. i worked for an oral surgeon for 6 years.
Get yourself some anti-cavity Flouride rinse.( comes in Store brand, too) Follow the directions and use it every night after you brush & flosss. People are spending too much time whitening their teeth. Spend more time with Flouride. Your teeth are enamel, the hardest element and the flouride binds with the enamel making them stronger; hense resisting tooth decay.
    Don’t forgot to floss too!

    • Karen says:

      Hi Michele,

Thanks for this. My doc mentioned getting a rinse like that so next time I pop by the drugstore I’m going to pick one up.

      I’ve been flossing like a fiend today…
