I used to get really grumpy back in school when kids would copy my style. It’s not that I thought of myself as a fashion visionary or anything, but I took pride in my penchant for offbeat things and fancied myself as different. So when Angela showed up to band one day wearing a baby poo green plaid vest eerily similar to the one I’d been rockin’ for most of that fall, carrying her sheet music in a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles folder a lot like mine, I couldn’t help but feel a little annoyed.
I vented about it to my friend Cindy, expecting a sympathetic ear. “Just chill out and be flattered,” she said. It was only worth tripping about if things got creepy and Single White Female (which, thank goodness, they didn’t).
Cindy was right, of course. After all, I’d copied/borrowed a few ideas from other kids, too, and looking at it that way, I thought perhaps that old saying about imitation and flattery was true.
Which brings us to this: if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Urban Decay must feel REALLY flattered by the new NYX Slide-On Liners ($8 each).
Even the unwieldy name sounds familiar — Slide On, Glide On & Definitely a Turn On Water Proof Extreme Shine Eye Liner. Sounds a little like Urban Decay’s 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils ($17), right?
Like the Glide-Ons, they’re smoother than Blackstreet in their heyday (remember Before I Let Go? That’s some baby-making music, ma!), with vibrant colors more intense than a triple rainbow deluxe.
I’ve got mad love for UD liners, especially Bourbon, but I’m always open to budget options. I couldn’t wait to give these a try.
They come in a wide range of colors, 18 of them, in a mix of matte and shimmery finishes, and I see several possible dupes here for classic UD shades…
16 of the 18 shades
This isn’t the first time NYX appears to have patterned new products on an existing line. Spring’s Nude on Nude Palette looks a lot like Urban Decay’s Naked Palette to me, and the Grinding Blushes remind me of things we’ve seen from Smashbox and Elizabeth Arden before.
When it comes to wear time along the lash lines, these can’t be beat. It’s just like the Glide-Ons. Since I didn’t feel like going all out with my makeup last weekend, I would just swipe the brown shade, Brown Perfection, along my upper and lower lash lines in the mornings. That was it. I tried it both with and without an eye primer, and in both cases the color latched onto my lids and wouldn’t let go…until I removed it at night with my standby PMS.
I left it on during my run to see how it would it would handle perspiration, and it cranked out four miles through a bucket of sweat, notably without stinging my eyes.
Swatches from the left to right: Pink Suede, Jewel, Glitzy Gold and Golden Bronze
Green Papaya, Esmeralda, Tropical Green and Golden Olive
Azure, Sunrise Blue, Purple Blaze and Pretty Violet
Brown Perfection, Jet Black, Platinum and Pure White
From the left to the right: Pink Suede, Jewel, Glitzy Gold, Golden Bronze, Green Papaya, Esmeralda, Tropical Green, Golden Olive, Azure, Sunrise Blue, Purple Blaze, Pretty Violet, Brown Perfection, Jet Black, Platinum and Pure White
The Slide Ons with a few similar UD 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils from the left to right: Glitzy Gold, UD El Dorado, Green Papaya, UD Graffiti, Golden Olive, UD Stash, Purple Blaze, UD Ransom, Azure, UD Electric, Brown Perfection, UD Corrupt, Jet Black and UD Zero
So other than price, do these differ from the Glide-Ons in any other ways? Well, I think they take longer to set. UD’s Glide-Ons dry within a minute or so, while the Slide-Ons take about five. The extra time isn’t necessarily a negative, though, if you use the extra time to blur out the edges. It may actually be great for smudged eye looks, or when I want to blend and layer powder shadows on top. They should make excellent bases for smokey eye looks.
Now, as for how they traverse the waterline, that’s one way in which The UD Glide-Ons clearly have the NYX Slide-Ons beat. I tried several of the shades along my upper and lower waterlines, and none of them lasted until the end of the day. I had my best luck with the black shade, Jet Black, which eeked out about four hours, but it looked pretty awful for most of that time. It started off as a thick, solid line, but quickly began to streak and looked patchy after about 30 minutes.
Poor staying power along the waterline is a huge miss for me, but if you’re strictly a lash lining gal looking for something pigmented, long-wearing (everywhere except the waterline) and relatively cheap, you might want to give these a try.

Speaking of NYX…
Did you take advantage of the brand’s big 12-hour online sale? It was to celebrate their 12th anniversary, but from the comments it seems like a lot of gals weren’t able to get through. I hopped onto the site earlier today, and it took forever and a day for the page to load. Maybe their servers couldn’t keep up with flood of makeup lovers trying to get in on the sale.
Were you able to get anything during the sale?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
Hazel says
these are great! i can’t wait to pick a few up 😀
Brooke says
I couldn’t get anything for the sale… I tried since the original start time up until the very end. It was a shame, because I wanted a variety of products to review for my blog. I primarily blog high end items, so this was a good chance to bring a more wallet friendly brand into my posts. =(
auroragyps says
I popped onto NYX’s site early on during the sale, but they have hardly any nail polishes on there, so I skipped it. After hearing what a PITA the whole thing was, I’m glad I did. I’m not sure why some companies think it’s a good idea to have a huge & amazing sale that will more than likely blow their site up.
Lakish says
Thanks for the review Karen! I wasn’t able to get through to the sale but the only items I wanted were these new Slide On Pencils so I’ll be buying a few shades from the BeautyJoint website instead.
Ashley says
Karen I swear you are my “soul sista!” Love you! Oh and I’ll check out these liners too =)
Jessi says
Well, let’s just say that while these pencils are gorgeous, I won’t be buying them… ever. I’m not much for conspiracies but NYX’s “sale” was a classic bait and switch if I ever say one. I refuse to support companies that treat their customers the way they do. I have a rather large order coming to me from when I ordered NYX off Cherry Culture a week or so ago, but I will not be buying anything else from them.
Vijaya says
I’ve officially decided that I’m not buying from Nyx anymore. The stuff with this sale was shady.
Tiffany says
Wow I’m glad I didn’t know about the sale! Sounds like I saved myself some frustration.
jenny says
those greens are gorgeous, i may give one of those a go!
productdoctor says
I have a hard time finding nyx. Where does everyone get it?
Emma RZ says
My local Meijer stocks it. I think maybe they’re just in the Mid-West though. Also I think my Super Target stocks it too.
Ariana says
That sale pissed me off soo much, I went to the site 5 different times yesterday and it didn’t work, super upsetting but I must say that dupe for UD Ransom is looking pretty nice and for eight bucks I could but 2 of the slide-ons for the price of one UD liner and still have some money for candy. Win-Win 😀
michelle says
i totally want pink suede! i didnt know there was a sale going on, what do you mean by bait and switch, jessi? ive never bought from nyx, and the only nyx product i have is a jumbo pencil i bought at ulta this year. i used it once and its been in my drawer since. great color, shitty staying power 🙁
Amista says
Wow there seems to be alot of dupes, i need to check these NYX liners out!
Nora says
I will no longer be purchasing any products from NYX.
Beatrice says
stash is legit my fave UD (possibly just favorite) eyeliner of all time! The fact that there’s a cheaper dupe makes me super happy! Thanks Karen for the swatches and comparisons!
Bhevarri says
These look great! I’ll definitely have to pick a few up!
Rae says
Damn, girl – these sound amazing! Loving the look of Tropical Green and Golden Olive ^^
Ada says
These look really nice but the waterproofness of UD’s pencils never works on me 🙁 It seems like the NYX ones will make great bases for eyeshadow though!
(I wonder if it’s possible to depot these pencils since they’re so creamy?)
Kaitlyn says
I was seriously peeved by how NYX handled their fail sale faux pas. I’m not sure i’ll be purchasing more of their products in the future. I highly doubt more than 100 people were able to actually place orders yesterday/today.
Vicki N. Hammons says
I’ve been eyeing these pencils, myself. I will try one first then on to the others if all goes well. I couldn’t get on the site at all. I was making my list right before 12pm then a black page came on saying they were getting ready for the sale and that’s were it stayed everytime I went on or it would say there was a connection problem. I was really looking forward to it. Oh, well! ;(
S says
Those are soooooo pretty. Too bad my local NYX carriers are so slow to get new things. Oh yeah, and that whole sale fiasco……
ValbonaPro says
Beautiful Colors!
Jen says
I heard Before I Let Go on the radio today on the way home! Haha!
I want Pink Suede… These sound pretty awesome. The waterline thing isn’t a dealbreaker for me; pretty much NOTHING stays on my waterline. The ones that do the best job are Stila’s smudge pots.
Instant Karma says
Oh God, I want them! Hands down, the UD 24/7 Pencils are my favorite liners, so I definitely have to look at these 😀
Soo says
I tried getting stuff from the NYX sale throughout the day/night/morning, but I couldn’t even get the site to load right once. although it was disappointing, I don’t really understand the hate that some people have been raging at NYX. they didn’t ‘owe’ anyone a sale to begin with, but I do think that they handled it poorly and should’ve been way more prepared for the bombardment. I mean, I’m disappointed too, but some of the hate just seems really extreme and unnecessary.
thanks for the swatches and review of these, Karen. I think I might eventually get Jewel and Tropical Green–they’re so pretty!
Denise says
So far I’m really liking Glitzy Gold and Sunrise Blue! Thanks for the swatches Karen!
Issa says
these are nice! and inexpensive too!
Kim says
These colors are amazing. I love the UD liners but even they don’t stay on my waterlines. Whenever I tightline with the black, I end up looking like a hot mess. The NYX look like a good option on the lash – which is where I’d use them anyway. Of course, I have about 10 years of UD to go through first. On the upside, maybe NYX will figure out how to run an online sale by then. 🙂
Scientific Housewife says
Those sound promising, but after the sale debacle, a lot of ladies will not be buying.
I wrote about it in my post today.
LauraA says
Thank you for doing a review on these. It turns out that the brown liner I ordered from them a few weeks ago actually is the Brown Perfection, and I had been using it all along and loving it. I’m not a waterline gurl, since my eyes are very sensitive, so that is also duly noted.
About the sale: I was one of the lucky, very few who got an order placed. And although I was glued to my computer a bit more than normal on Sunday into Monday, I still got out and ran my usual Monday schedule. The site functionality was very frustrating (my hunch is that the database that is behind the ordering module was still glitchy–beyond server capacity issues, particularly as the payment module functioned absolutely normally once I was able to get to checkout), but I found a couple of actual articles out on the web that indicated that Nyx had planned to unveil an entirely new web design for this sale. Some would call this gutsy. I personally think of it as a bit foolish, but Nyx is far from the only business out there to do this. I worked at a university that launched an entire new system a few years ago at the start of a spring semester, which also coincided with dealing with the application rush for the following academic year. Needless to say, it didn’t go well–and we encountered a lot of the same problems, but in a completely different setting. Untangling the IT mess took at least one calendar month, with other smaller fixes still ongoing until at least the close of the semester.
Like many others, I have the expectation that IT functions very rapidly, very efficiently. When these expectations aren’t met, there is a wide range of reactions to failure.
End rant/off-topicness.
auroragyps says
LauraA: I was kind of thinking the same thing. I looked at the site after all the craziness was well over & saw their message saying ‘How do you like our new site?’ and I was amazed. You decided to have a MAJOR sale, one that could break a site that’s been up & running for a while, on your new site? That’s just asking for things to go ka-blooey.
Emma RZ says
I normally stick to HE products with proven cruelty-free claims but I think NYX has been proven and I think that some of those colours are actually better than the UD ones. Love the olive green, it reminds me of a body shop liner I had years ago and actually finished!
Chris25 says
It’s cool that there is a cheaper aternative to the UD liners. The problem is that if they are smudgy on the waterline, they sure as heck are going to turn my eyes into raccoon territory.
I did not try to buy anything during the NYX sale, but I think that what NYX did to “rectify” the problem was wrong. They should have extended the original sale. That was what a lot of people were counting on. NYX promised a $1.20 sale. They should keep that promise.
Melissa says
Agreed. “Hey I ordered the $7.00 hamburger that was on special for $1.20 but didn’t get it. Oh sorry about that our kitchen was crazy, let me get you that hamburger, you can have it for $3.50” Hmm, how does that work exactly?
coco_fiere says
I, too, had NO luck with the NYX sale but I stocked up on product when Ulta ran their 40% off sale a few weeks back so I wasn’t too annoyed. These look interesting for the cost. For those of you who have issues with UD 24/7 liners and others staying on the waterline (like myself), try Cover Girl’s Liquiline Blast pencils. They have a limited color range but they work and they don’t smudge on my contact lenses. With coupons and BOGO 1/2 sales somewhere every week, they’re a good bet IMHO.
Beautiful Canvas says
I wonder if “anyone” were able to make purchase during that sale. I was home so I tried like a dozen time…even the next day, the site was still down. How disappointing. I think they should at least send out a couple code or something because I doubt anyone were able to get on.
Iris says
So sad I tried a million of times to get a bunch of stuff from NYX but they suck. They might to do this because they only one that you visit their website. I don’t know I prefer to buy at cherry culture they sometimes have great discounts.
And talking about NYX they did a great job with these eyeliner, I was wondering buy some UD but I have a budget that I must respect.
Melissa says
The colors are amazing! But I’m a waterline kinda gal…so I guess these work work 🙁 I guess I could use them as a base. Don’t even get me going about the 12 hr sale. Let’s just say that a significant amount of time was invested with ZERO payoff. Took hrs to get my cart finished then….then, it wouldn’t load the checkout page for me to pay. Grrr. I’m about over it, but not quite yet…
rhamnousia @ desi girl does makeup says
These looks really nice, they’re definitely more pigmented than the UD ones. I didn’t think anything would beat the UD ones but NYX seem quite hot on their pigments. I’ve never used something by them that was lacking in pigment. I’m adding these to my list of things to buy when I go to America.
Tammy says
They look great but I rather spend the extra money for the UD liners. I’m just disgusted at how NYX handled the sale. I can’t continue to shop with a company that has such awful customer service.
Candace Grubbs says
this is awesome! i use borbon for the tail end of my eyebrows. i got it in the summer of love set
Nina says
no. im loyal to my UD 24x7s. pass on these!
Megan says
Pretty! A lot of the UD liners don’t stay on my waterline that well, so I think these would be fine. I need Tropical Green and Pretty violet!
Adrienne says
I’m definitely going to try these out!! Love the colors, Like Megan above me said, Pretty Purple and Tropical Green are going to go on my must haves list! I avoid the waterline anyways since my eyes tend to water and i have contacts and i’m fine without it, so i can’t wait to play with these colors! I’m recently obSESSed with UD’s 24hr eye shadow pencils (based on their eyeliner pencils). I love UD, but i hope someone dupes their idea and makes 24/hr waterproof eyeshadow pencils on the cheap, because i’d probably buy every color 😛
Lauren says
these look amazing! the color selection is to die for. golden olive is probably my favorite at the moment. thanks for the awesome swatches Karen!
Crystal says
I really need something that will stay put in my waterline. So UD it is! I wasn’t able to get a THING from that NYX sale. They really handled the whole thing badly and I can’t see myself ordering from them anytime soon.
Alicia says
I will definitely stick with UD 24/7… love the product and not so sure about NYX….

So glad you pointed out the FAKE NYX sale…I tried to get throught the server for 8hours the day of the scam! There werent any girls on there fb page that said they could get through! Although these liners look nice…Id rather give UD my hard earned cash! Also, the way they handled the aftermath was crappy….grrrrrr! Im boycotting NYX!
Suzanne says
I need Nyx like fishies need water. I’m still an apologist. Not going to let a stupid choice ruin Nyx for me. Far too good. Crippled by retarded choices and bad IT, but – still good.
Vonvon says
I love the swatches in the first 3 photos of swatches. The pink, purples, gold, blues and greens are really up my alley.
Suzanne says
This is a fabulous fabulous post. I get 99% of my make-up information from blogs alone. Posts like these are exactly why.
Thanks!
Crystal says
Oh dear lord! I went on their website & every single last one of these is sold out. Le, sigh. 🙁 Also I know how much of a cat lover you are. My mother-in-law ran over her cat Sammy (of course by accident) yesterday. He is in critical condition but the vets think he will live & she is devastated. He is very old & is already blind in one eye. Please keep her & Sammy in your thoughts.
Karen says
Hi Crystal,
I’m so sorry to hear about your mom-in-laws cat. Tabs and I are thinking good thoughts for you, Sammy and your family.
Callie says
I am a HUGE NEW FAN of Sliding. 😉 Mostly because I am on a budget and still want great make up, and these let me do it.
Lenita says
I got these based mainly on your recommendation Karen, and oh. my. lilies. These are as great as you say. I got Golden Olive and Tropical Green.Looks exactly like your swatches. I’ve gone back and bought back ups, and other colors (the browns, the bronzes, the gold).
Thanks for the swatches and thorough review, girlfriend! Smooches!
