With Halloween behind us (shoot!), it’s a straight shot from here to the holidays. For me that spells two things: 1) stretchy pants and 2) cute makeup mini-gift sets at Sephora. 🙂
I’d always wanted to try Stila Lip Glaze lipglosses before but never got around to it. Then, I saw the six colors featured in Stila’s new Shine On Gift of Glaze (special to Sephora, $28).
A regular, full-sized Stila Lip Glaze regularly sells for about $22, but the smaller mini-tubes that come with this six-piece set average out to $4.67 apiece — not a bad deal. Four of the shades are some of Stila’s currently best selling Lip Glaze colors; the other two are newbies, Raisin and Gumdrop.
- Grapefruit: a shimmery pink
- Apricot: a shimmery pastel peach
- Vanilla: a shimmery beige
- Brown Sugar: a shimmery golden brown
- Raisin: a shimmery golden plum
- Gumdrop: a creamy coral pink

Click Pen Casing and Brush Applicator
Full-size and mini-Lip Glazes come in click pen tubes with brush applicators. Twisting one end of the pen pushes the gloss up into the brush. I found the act of twisting the pen weirdly satisfying and got a little twist/click happy (it clicks as it’s twisted). Color leaked all over my desk, oops!
But as long as you resist the urge to over-twist, the gloss is really easy to apply with the included brush. I was even able to do it without looking at myself in the mirror.
Sheer Color, Great Scent and Shine… But a Little Drying
Being very sheer helps make these colors easy to apply, but some of them, like Raisin and Brown Sugar, barely look like anything at all because they’re so lightly pigmented.
While you have to look closely to see the color with some of these shades, you also have to sniff really hard to catch the scent. I think that’s a good thing, though, because I don’t like strongly scented or flavored lip products. Each one of these has a very light scent that matches its name (my favorite being Vanilla).
As for texture, the Lip Glazes have a shiny, thick texture, not sticky, that lasts about two and a half hours per application.
I’d give these an A if it weren’t for one thing — wearing them tends to dry my lips. The cooler weather may have something to do with it, but I think the Stila It Glosses are considerably more moisturizing and more highly pigmented as well.

Stila Good Deal
If you’re a fan of the Stila Lip Glazes, this set works out to be a great deal. The $28 set gets you six shades that would have otherwise cost $132 if bought individually at $22 per full-size tube.

Um, why are you staring at this empty jar?
Guess what? For first time in almost nearly 20 years of wearing makeup, I *finally* finished a jar of loose powder, yea! The honor went to Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder ($34). I dunno… I feel a weird urge to bronze it like they do with baby shoes and put it on display in my bookshelf like a trophy.
Have you ever finished an entire jar of loose powder before? Which one was it?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Congratulations on finishing the powder!! I feel really good when I finish something because then I don’t feel bad that I spent money on it 🙂
I’ve finished many jars of MAC’s loose powder, NC30. It’s my ultimate setting powder.

I’ve never finished a jar of loose powder, but the only lipgloss I’ve ever used up was Stila Lipglaze in Vanilla. I didn’t re-purchase it for some reason, probably the price. They’re nice glosses but I don’t think they’re worth the money (even if that click tube gives the most satisfying bone crunching sort of click). I’d much rather spend money on Smashbox glosses, of which I’m a HUGE fan.
Hope you’re enjoying your Sunday and that Tabs is behaving himself!

Hi Shefali,
I have that one, too! It’s an oldie, but a goodie for me. I think I’m going to bust it out today, as a matter of fact. I like it just by itself on weekends. 🙂
Karen says
Hi Beth,
Why is that click so satisfying? 🙂
Today I’ve been just taking pics and testing makeup… nothing too exciting! Tabs has been MIA since he left with a bang at 4. What a monster! I’m sure he’ll be back when his tummy is rumbly.
How’s your day been?

I’ve gone through three MAC ricepaper eyeshadows. Although I dropped one of them and it broke, so I guess it doesn’t really count.
I got lipglosses from Walgreens (Jordana?) in the same clickypen applicator, and they’re great! The BF asked if it was some kind of weapon. Wha?? Don’t act like you’ve never seen lipgloss before!

Oddly, I just finished my Laura Mercier yesterday, and it is the first I’ve ever finished! I also finished my tube of her tinted moisturizer, the first foundation I’ve ever used up. I’m trying to keep myself on a makeup diet by not allowing myself to buy new stuff until I use up old stuff. I’m getting bored with my limited colors to play with though, so we will see how long it lasts!

I have finished a bare minerals powder one time! Thats it for me!
I think stilla had these out last year and they sold like hoy cakes! I bought them for myself then went to sephora to get more a day later and no luck!! Its a awesome deal!!!
Hope your week is fab!
xoxo

HOT cakes! What the heck are HOY cakes anyway?!? 😉

The only thing I can ever finish is lipgloss!
Speaking of which – if you liked the stila lipglazes try the Tangerine color – it is fabulous on tan complexions like ours! When I wear it I feel like I came back from an island vacation. Also black cherry is great color. I know the click is such a instant gratifying sound but be careful – over twisting leads to a buildup of color coming out of the brush causing you to waste gloss. I use to go through these babies like water because of over twisting!

I’m so obsessed with Stila lip glaze, especially the vanilla one. Today I went to Sephora and I took a look at all the Philosophy products. The lip gloss “ornaments” were so cute and the double hot cocoa shower gel smells good enough to eat! I’m so excited for the holidays. It already feels more “wintery” in Hawaii..it’s raining a lot more and it’s a lot cooler.

WTG on finishing that powder. As far as I can remember, there are a handful of items that I have truly finished:
Becca Finishing Loose Powder
MAC MSF in Natural
MAC Love Nectar Lustreglass
Have a great week!

Congrats on finishing the jar of powder! Believe it or not, I’ve never finished anything in powder form, even tiny samples. So there’s a lot of buying but no finishing for me 🙂

Hi Pepper,
You beat me by one pan! I’m a big fan of Ricepaper; it’s one of my staples. Have you ever tried Shroom? It’s another good neutral option (and looks great with both Vex and Club).
Ha! You better keep that boy away from that lipgloss. I made the mistake of letting El Hub inspect a new lipstick once and he ended up smashing the lipstick bullet into the cap!
Karen says
Hi Laura,
Funny you should mention your Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer. I’m just about finished with mine. 🙂 I am waiting for the Sephora friends and family sale to replace it. Have you ever tried LM’s Oil-Free Foundation? It’s wonderful!
Karen says
Hi KK,
LOL, I want some hoy cakes!
When I was younger my dad’s homie lived in a house across the street, and on the weekends they would keep their garages open and work on their cars and whatnot. Whenever they needed to call the other person for help (or for a beer, ha) they’d yell out, “HOY!”. This was before cell phones, of course. LOLOL…
Karen says
Hi Lexi,
Orange shades look really great on tan skin, I agree! I will try to find it and hopefully it won’t dry out my pucker. Have you tried the It Glosses? I love ’em!
Karen says
Hi Lindsay,
Oh yah, I saw those ornaments! Super cute!
You know what always cracks me up? When El Hub and I go there during the holidays we wear shorts and t-shirts; then we’ll go to the mall and see the locals wearing Old Navy fleece and ski hats! 🙂
Karen says
Hi Marisol,
Oh, you just reminded me that I *have* gone through a few MAC Lipglasses: at least 3 tubes of Spite and 2 tubes of Nymphette. 🙂
Karen says
Hi Dao,
I hear that, girl! Maybe one of these days you’ll finish a jar… then you can take a picture of it and send it to me, ha ha ha!
tania says
Hey Karen congrats on the finished jar! The only powder I’ve ever finished is MAC’s blot powder. I haven’t repurchased cuz I switched to MSF Natural which I love. Years ago I had a Sephora makeover at the Times Square location. The artist used several Stila products on me including the lip glaze in Berry.I loved it but I’m loyal to MAC.Maybe I should go to MAC and find a dupe??

Hi Karen!
I’ve had a huuuuge jar of loose Chanel powder for years, and I doubt I’ll ever finish it. (I’ve stopped using it, but the packaging is so nice I don’t want to throw it out!) However, the only eye shadow I have ever finished was a Chanel quad, I think it was called Planète or something like that. I LOVED it, but I think it was discontinued some time ago… 🙁 Do you finish a lot of your other products (except from loose powder)? I try to imagine how much make up you must have, it must be crazy amounts! 🙂 (jealous…)

I wore Brown Sugar on my wedding day – I think it’s lovely. I wish we had more Stila in the UK. If I do find it, it’s usually shockingly expensive. Sigh.
I’ve been using MAC Select Sheer in NW20 for a couple of months, and I know that I’m going to get to the bottom of the jar – can you say AWESOME?!
Anh says
Wow, that’s great Karen!!! I’m talking about your loose powder. The only thing I finished ’till this moment is my moisturizer LOL. By the way, thank you so much for doing such a great job. I mean I just wish that you could do a review on Stila lip glaze and…here it is. Last time was the Shu products. I really love them. Good job Karen !!! Have a nice day.

So funny! I love Shroom too. Ricepaper, shroom, and the gold shadow in Clinique’s Beach Plum Duo are my favorite neutrals.
Indian Girl says
I have to try the loose powder from LM then ! The only thing I have ever finished is a lipstick I got on my birthday from my best friends 6 years back. We were all super young then and I really wanted that lipstick – Maybelline Wet Shine. I used it all the time and finally finished it, one fine day. I still have the case though, reminds me of good ol days !

I’ve never tried Stila before but I’ve wanted to try the lip glazes for a while, I like this set and I looove gumdrop!
I’ve never finished an entire jar of anything except lipbalm, lol! I always get bored halfway through and buy new stuff.
Amanda says
Wow! your empty jar is quiet impressive. I can’t remember the last time I got to that feat.
ITA about the lip glazes. I also prefer the it glosses. (I used to have trouble with the click tubes-I think I’m too impatient to let the gloss load in the brush or something…)
lexi says
yes i love the it glosses too!

Luckily finishing powder is never an issue for me. I’m on my 2nd jar of loose powder, produced by a local cosmetologist, I’ve finished a Dior powder. If it comes any cheaper, I probably would have finished my NC20 Select Sheer loose powder, too.
Totally love the glazes, Karen. I love Stila’s and they all look great on you. Can you please post your bare lips on next FOTD/lip product reviews. Lip products look much brighter on your lips than mine so I just wonder how different our pigmentation is. Thanks in advance!

I use to like this glaze but its way too thick!

Haha! I’m soo guilty of that too, just without the ski hats. But the last time I went to California and we went to a boardwalk (the one with the carnival too..or are there more than one?) and it was during the Spring and I had this heavy duty ski jacket on and I see people wearing swim suits and bikinis..and I’m just saying to myself, “WHAT ARE THEY THINKING?!”
