Careful there, makeup lover. Beware the Rouge Bunny! She’ll hop into your life, steal your liquid highlighter-lovin’ heart, and then spring away with your entire makeup allowance (and then some).
Don’t say I didn’t warn you!
Shh! Do you hear it…? That voice on the wind? It’s saying, You’ll love my peachy golden highlighter, my love. It’s the siren song of RBR’s shimmery Seas of Illumination Highlighting Liquid in Sea of Showers, and it’s my favorite thing from the lavish line so far. It’s also — brace yourself — 72 bucks.
Cruel, cruel rabbit, why dost thou charge so much? Just a couple tiny drops of this multipurpose highlighter turn my upper cheekbones into incandescent light bulbs! Almost. The formula is surprisingly pigmented, shimmery and long-lasting. I’ve clocked it at 14 hours once already, and most of the time when I go to remove it at night, it hasn’t even begun to fade.
Seas of Illumination Highlighting Liquid in Sea of Showers; one of four shades, $72 each
I’ve also tried mixing Sea of Showers with different foundations, from full-coverage Laura Mercier Oil-Free Supreme to sheer NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer, and my skin always seems fresher and more luminous when I’ve added a drop or two.
Wearing Sea of Showers on my upper cheek bones, brow bones, temples and down the bridge of my nose
Additional makeup worn on my cheeks: Becca Mineral Blush in Bolero beneath apples; eyes: Becca Eye Tint in Romanticism and Becca Line and Define Pencil in Cabrera
Swatches from the left: Loose Glitter Pigment Fire Drops, Long-lasting Matt Eye Shadow in Sweet Dust Seriema, Blush Wand in Manet and Seas of Illumination Highlighting Liquid in Sea of Showers
Less expensive liquid highlighters like the $26 Benefit High Beam and $20 MAC Lustre Drops produce a similar effect, but I do think Sea of Showers pulls ahead of the pack. With it, I don’t find myself spending time buffing out edges like I normally do with liquid highlighters. The shimmer just seems finer and more intense than usual, and then there’s the gorgeous frosted glass packaging. Sitting on a dresser or counter top, it’s every bit a luxury piece.
This bunny is a born entertainer, and one bottle could probably be made to last for years, but good grief! — $72.
No, bunny. No!
Seriously, even Armani’s $59 Fluid Sheer, which I remember trying once a while back at a counter and liking, seems like a bargain in comparison.
As a side, the pump took some getting used to because it has a hair trigger (hare trigger?). The lightest touch dispenses the product, so I took to using an empty sample jar to save the excess. The first time, though, before I had my sample jar ready, I mixed the leftover in with my body lotion and applied it to my arms and legs for a toasty shimmer (’twas very J.Lo on a yacht). 🙂
PRICE: $72 (!)

MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: B+ (an A+ product, but what’s with the price?)
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

That price! Holy Mother! I wish they’d lower their prices ya’ know? Maybe then more people would actually buy their stuff.
Karen says
Hi Tracy,
Oh, I know. They make great makeup, it’s just so pricey.
Rae // theNotice says
Holy cripes, $72?! D: I mean – it’s (really, really) pretty, I’ll give it that. And the packaging is gorgeous (though it does sound a little finicky), but… $72? O.o
I think not, Rouge Bunny Rouge. Talk about a hefty price tag!
Karen says
You might just change your mind if you see this highlighter in person, Rae! It’s kind of rad.
Vonvon says
I wish this brand is more readily and easily available.
Karen says
Hi Vonvon,
Me too. Who knows? Maybe in a few years you’ll be able to find them at Sephora. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
Marina says
You look so beautiful on these photos 🙂 As for the price, we’ve kind of used to such prices in most EU countries, unfortunately.
Karen says
Hi Marina,
Thanks! What are you up to this weekend?
Sunny @ Mostly Sunny says
Oh wow, that price tag is really scaring me away… I’ve always wanted some RBR eyeshadows, and even those are scarily expensive, they’re not scary like this. With that said however, Karen you look so effortlessly glowy with this one!
Karen says
Hi Sunny,
The line is cool. Expensive, but cool. I hope you give it a go sometime.
Happy weekend!
artemis says
SO pretty! love the effect
Karen says
Hi Artemis,
Yeah, it’s a really beautiful highlighter. Do you think you might try it?
Wendy says
You look very pretty, as usual! Thank you for the post. While tempting, I think I’ll continue to be happy with my overpriced Guerlain Cruel Gardenia Meteorites and not lust after RBR anymore. At least, I was able to try the meteorites before parting ways with my $$$.
Karen says
Hi Wendy,
I have a friend who is a die-hard Meteorites fan…she’s always trying to convert me, LOL! What else do you like from Guerlain? I’m a big fan of their lipsticks.
Wendy says
I’ve been meaning to try their lipsticks. The shades in stock at my local Sephora haven’t made me swoon. I may have to go to their counter at Neiman Marcus before I can decide on a shade.
I have been enjoying the Les Aquas palette. It is really beautiful for an evening spring look. The colors pop and go well with the mint, blues, and greens this season.
Katrina says
Holy wow, that is one pricey bunny! As absolutely lovely as it is I don’t think I’ll be shelling out for this brand any time soon 🙁
Karen says
Hi Katrina,
I hope they hop on over to the US soon…maybe then the prices will be a bit more affordable.
Happy Saturday, btw! What are you up to this weekend?
Emi at Project Swatch says
So pretty, but wow, $72 – you’re on a pricey product kick 🙂
Karen says
Hi Emi,
There’s a drugstore makeup post that went up before this one on Physicians Formula. 🙂

I got mad love for bargains, too!
Cindy (Prime Beauty) says
Yikes, $72? I really, really like BECCA’sliquid highlighters and I though they were kind of pricey at $44!
Anna (Mary Kay) says
Hi there! Love the look!! Hate the price!! Mary Kay cosmetics has some of the same products at more than half the cost!! ask me about it!

My favorite way to “waste” time, I don’t really see it as wasting though, is to watch YouTube makeup tutorials
Nina says
That is just gorgeous on you! 🙂
Karen says
Thanks, Nina! If only it wasn’t so pricey, le sigh.
Hope you’re having a lovely Sunday so far. What are ya up to? I’m going to do some nail polish swatching then I’m going to work out.
Nina says
We cooked some Chopped Steaks, Mashed Potatoes and Mixed Veggies. I only had the potatoes and veggies since im going no meat this Holy Week. 🙂
Its really pricey but y’know I might spring for this powder more than I would a certan golden, glittery, shimmery powder made by another company that shall remain unnamed. :-d
Karen says
Nice! How has it been going meatless this week? It definitely feels different, huh?
I just got done running. I did six miles…my main motivation is so I can have frozen yogurt tonight! I plan on putting a bunch of fruit in the cup, too, so it won’t be completely non-healthy, LOL!
I gotta say, while pricey, this is one really great highlighter. If Rouge Bunny Rouge ever comes to US stores you must give them a try!
Nina says
Feels a bit strange. My goal is to go meatless w/o loading up on those badbad carbs!
Yay for 6 miles — awesome job. I worked out yesterday as well – did a weights class at the gym. 🙂
Im getting curiouser and curiouser about RBR. 🙂
Karen says
Have you tried any bean soups? I find they help keep me full without having to stuff myself with other carbs. Dairy helps to hold me over too, stuff like low fat cottage cheese and plain yogurt with some fruit for fiber is great!
Good for you for doing weights. I haven’t lifted in FOREVER and I miss it.
Hee hee, I feel the same way about RBR too. If there was a counter near my place I’d spend hours there!
Petunia says
I have had the most amazingly positive experiences with RBR customer service. Alas- the recession has me unable to purchase this amazing highlighter, for now.
Looks fabulous on you. Enjoy!
Nancy says
Hi Karen,
Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your beauty blog! It’s an addiction-I read it every day! Thanks so much for all your hard work-it’s an awesome blog!
I also have a fat kitteh just like yours-I honesty think they could be twins! I’ll have to send ya a pic of my Rassmussen (we call him Rass for short) sometime! 🙂
I also wanted to let you know you can now order Rouge Bunny Rouge products from a US based company called Beautyhabit (www.beautyhabit.com). They are located in California. I found out a few days ago from looking through another beauty blog site (and I can’t remember who’s it was! Gah!). Yes, I was a baaaad girl and ordered way too many things at once (my saving grace is that several items were on back order and I won’t be charged until shipped! Ha!). I ordered the same highlighter you showed here and it was only $55 vs $72! Yay! 🙂 just wanted to let you know in case you hadn’t heard yet. Check the site out-seems to be sorta like a Sephora where you can order other brands, can get incentives and free samples, etc!
Well, I’m off to get ready for work! Have a good one! 🙂
