Society accepts when one purposefully resembles a rodeo clown (hey, those clowns know how to WORK!), but when it’s accidental, well, that’s another story.
If past encounters with intensely pigmented eyeshadows left you looking more Krusty than cute, then Rimmel Glam Eyes Mono Eyeshadow ($4) might be your new BFF.
Released with the company’s spring collection and available in drugstores now, these six powder eyeshadows in color-rich shades blend so surprisingly well that I’m betting even eyeshadow neophytes could make them work.
I’ve been playing around with Celestial Sapphire (a matte royal blue), Spicy Bronze (a shimmery, coppery bronze with golden glitter) and Night Jewel (a shimmery gunmetal gray) this week, and all of them have the same soft, creamy texture that blends on lids into a seamless harmony/gradient of color. The texture reminds me a lot of the way Shu Uemura shadows feel, only not quite as finely milled…
Celestial Sapphire
Night Jewel
Spicy Bronze
The wear time on these is NO JOKE! With a good primer like Urban Decay’s Eden, they stay put for a solid 6-8 hours without any noticeable creasing or fading, and that’s amazing when you consider the price.
As with other Rimmel products I’ve tried, the packaging, while cute, isn’t the sturdiest on the block. It feels flimsy, and my butterfingers find the latch difficult to open (I’m actually thinking of depotting them).
Poor packaging aside, their intense pigments, flawless blendability and bargain basement price elevates these shadows to heroic altitudes! If you’re on the market for a drugstore treat, Glam Eyes should do. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A+
You might like Rimmel Glam Eyes Mono Eyeshadows if…
- You like eyeshadows with sumptuous pigmentation
- You want something that’s easy to blend
- You don’t want to pay a lot
- You can overlook the fragile packaging
- You like long-wearing eyeshadows that don’t crease or fade
The Hunger Games: Not just for Nutella addicts anymore
I just started a sci-fi book called The Hunger Games. Have you heard of this?? It’s set in a post-apocalyptic United States where the residents of each of the land’s 12 territories are forced to sacrifice two children — a boy and a girl — every year to something called The Hunger Games, which is basically a televised gladiator-like situation where the kids fight to the death!
My friend Curt recommended it. Last night I made the mistake of starting to read it at 11:30 and could NOT put it down! I finally had to force myself to stop around 1am, but only because I knew I had to get up early. If it wasn’t a weeknight I probably would’ve stayed up till dawn!
At first I thought the premise was kinda morbid, ya know? — but the writing’s snappy and compelling. I haven’t been this excited about any teen sci-fi since Scott Westerfeld’s Uglies.
Are you reading anything good right now?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
Nina says
Ive been looking those over @ the drugstore and am very attracted. Not that I need any more eyeshadows but the price is so right and the colors so pretty! 🙂
Karen says
Welcome to my world! 😀
Nina says
Its an addiction that I dont want an intervention for. At least not yet!
Karen says
Ha ha, me too!
I am happy to be addicted to makeup and shoes. I figure it’s harmless in comparison to other things to be addicted to!!
Nina says
I so agree with you! 😉
Christina says
Great review on the shadows! We can’t wait to try them out for ourselves!
So funny you are reading Hunger Games! We just finished reading that and its sequel Catching Fire. Both great books that we couldn’t stop reading! Highly suggest you read Catching Fire after you finish Hunger Games! The third book is coming out in August. 🙂

Karen says
That’s what I hear! I hope I finish both of ’em in time for the third one.
Jen says
Unfortunately, my CVS doesn’t have a very good selection of Rimmel… Boo.
The premise of that book kinda sounds like Battle Royale. My sister’s been trying to get me to read it for ages. Maybe I’ll pick it up today.
Rachael says
My local Target and Walmart have pretty good selections. You should check there if there are some near you.

Good call, Rachael. I’ve seen good stuff at Tar-ghay as well.
Jen says
Ooh, good idea. Thanks!
Karen says
Pick it up… just don’t start reading it before midnight. 🙂
Sara says
I love the Uglies and I love Rimmel! 🙂 It always makes me so happy when I can find a solid drugstore brand.
Karen says
True that! What else do you like from the line?
Savannah says
Oooh these eyeshadows sound great! Just wondering have you ever tried FLIRT! cosmetics at Kohls? I love their eyeshadows and have 2 of their limited edition eyeshadow palete ( pretty sure I misspelled that!) well anyways I love them. They don’t crease or fade, pigmentation is AH-MAZING! I also read the Hunger Games and I devoured it. It was soooooo good I am waiting for the third to come out in October.. I can’t wait!
Karen says
Yup, I’ve tried those eyeshadows and they’re pretty good! 🙂
christina says
what are you wearing on your lips and cheeks?
and your hair looks gorgeous!!<3
Karen says
Thanks!
I’m wearing Rimmel on my cheeks and lips. That’s Rose Blush Moisture Renew Lipstick and Pink Rose Natural Finish Blush. I reviewed ’em both a while back:

YES. I love that series. There’s a sequel, catching fire, and soon Mockingjay will come out, the last book.
Karen says
I’m so glad that I have all these books to look forward to!

You’re right about these Karen! I bought Royal Violet and I LOVE it! It is super easy to get a slight wash of color or easily buildable for bolder look. I want them in all the shades!!!!
Karen says
Oh, that’s one I plan on picking up. I bet it looks awesome with brown!
Katie says
Yup! I pair it with MAC Cork and it looks lovely:)
Karen says
What an awesome combo! Cork is one of my MAC neutral staples. 🙂
Steph B says
I also have Royal Violet and love pairing it with MAC Digit and/or Smoke and Diamonds.
Melissa says
I really love a lot of Rimmel’s products. I tried the eyeshadows a couple a month ago and loved them.
Karen says
The line has a lot of great stuff that’s good quality for drugstore. What are your favorite items? I love the lipsticks and the Glam Eyes Lash Flirt mascara.
Amber says
Did you recently add highlights? Hair looks awesome.
I’m not sure I’ll try these, but all the positive Rimmel reviews make me realize I’ve never tried any of their stuff. I should rectify that!
.-= Amber’s last blog post… Care package =-.
Karen says
Yup, about two weeks ago. The color’s starting to lighten up more so they’re really visible now, especially in the sun.
A good time to pick up Rimmel is during a BOGO sale. 🙂
Stef says
Oh good, The Hunger Games is on my nightstand to actually start reading tonight!

Karen says
Oh, I bet that color would look beautiful on you!
Shelby says
I’ll definitely be checking out these Rimmel shadows! I’m always looking for a good deal.
I’m really wanting to read Hunger Games! There are so many books and so little time to read them. I keep seeing a lot of people talk about them and say how amazing it and the second book are. I’m trying to hold off until the third book is released so I can read all three in a row. Don’t know if I’ll manage to do it though!
I’m really wanting to read the Uglies as well.
Right now I’m reading “Boycotts and Barflies” – I have about a hundred pages to go. After that, I’ll probably move on to Hush Hush, which I hear great things about too.
.-= Shelby’s last blog post… niceKittyRAWR: @3todream night! =-.

I’m adding those titles to my “to read” list. Thanks for the recs. 🙂
Uglies is an excellent read, and some great sci-fi. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed!
Anna says
oh my gosh i love that book! it is so good but so addicting!
Karen says
I seriously could not put it down. I have a feeling I’m going to fly through it.

Kimberly says
i LOVE your hair. What color did you use? I have dark hair like yours & I am thinking about getting highlights like yours too 🙂
Karen says
Oh, I wish I could say that I did these myself!! In all matters of hair coloring I’ve pretty much resigned to the fact that I pretty much am all thumbs.
I do remember my stylist saying that the highlights were chocolate-colored, though. Are you in the Bay Area? I’m happy to send along his info!
makeup morsels says
I was eyeing these shadows last time I was at CVS, good to know they’re nice and smooth. I think I have enough eyeshadows for now (haha what a lie! I will never have enough eyeshadows, but I will admit I shouldn’t go crazy buying more). and omg Hunger Games! Love those books, can’t wait for the third one to come out. I heard they’re making a movie out of the first book, I sincerely hope they don’t mess it up, because the plot could make an amazing movie
.-= makeup morsels’s last blog post… NOTD Pretty in Purple =-.
Karen says
Aww, you can never have enough eyeshadow! Hey, at least these are affordable, right? 🙂
Ashleigh says
I’ll have to look into these eyeshadows!!
The Hunger Games series is one of my favorite (second to the Twilight Saga). It’s sooooo addicting!! Wait until you get to the second, Catching Fire…… 😉
Karen says
Sweet! I’m so glad I have more to look forward to!
Arianne says
Wow fantastic! I’ve pretty much given up on drugstore eyeshadows recently, but reading this gives me hope. 🙂

Try ’em! Even if you don’t like ’em (and I think you will), at least they don’t cost an arm and a leg, ya know?
Crystal says
Oooooh! I love Rimmel, especially their mascaras. I like the quilted design on these shadows. It looks so chic.
I’ve read all the Hunger Games recently and they are beyond amazing. The new one comes out this fall, and I’m dying to find out what happens! 🙂
I loved the Uglies series as well. I think that the best one was the Pretties though. Which one was your fave?
Karen says
I liked Pretties a lot. My favorite, hmm… it’s probably Uglies. I remember flying through that and just devouring it!
Shiny says
I’m reading Rudyard Kipling’s ‘The Phantom Rickshaw’ – it’s a compilation of short stories. It’s amazing how current the writing seems even though it’s over 125 years old!!
Karen says
Some writing is timeless. It’s been a while since I’ve read any short stories! As a genre I really enjoy them…
Tammy says
These shadows look great! You look awesome, too! I wish I could get my hair wavy like yours. How’d you do it?
I’m so gonna get The Hunger Games. I’ve been looking for a good book to read now that school’s almost over (next Tuesday, yes!).

Kit says
Rimmel seems to really have their A-game on lately. I absolutely LOVED their new moisture-rich lipsticks. And all the colors I’ve tried look amazing on me. (YAY!) I’m definitely going to try out these eyeshadows -now it’s just deciding on the color. Have you tried them for the ‘eyeshadow as eyeliner’ trick yet? If so, how did they go?
Also on the book recommend is ‘The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’ by Steig Larsson. I’m late to the game picking it up – it’s been out for years. But it’s amazing and I can’t put it down. Also if you like YA books there’s a series called Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr that is AMAZING. Don’t let the weird premise fool you. You’ll be hooked. Trust. Her writing is feminist and creative and I’m never quite able to predict how the story will go. The fact my Twitter is comprised of you, Neil Gaiman and her should tell you something. 🙂
Karen says
Hi Kit,
SO glad to hear you loved the Moisture Rich lippies. I love them too! For drugstore, you really can’t beat it. 🙂
And yes, I’ve tried these shadows as liner and they work great. In this look above I’m wearing Night Jewel along my lash *and* waterline. The formula doesn’t irritate my eyes, and it lasts a long time.
Oh, I just watched The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo movie a few weeks ago and it was really good. It was very intense, suspenseful and made my stomach churn. I’m going to put that along with Wicked Lovely on my summer reading list.
Anywho, happy Saturday! I hope that your weekend is off to a great start! Are you doing anything fun?
Steph B says
Oooh…wasn’t that a fantastic movie? I’m on the wait list to get the book from the library. I loved that it didn’t follow your typical movie format.
Tiffany says
I’ll have to keep an eye out for these – they sounds great! I think I need the bronze and the grey in my life…
Your hair looks sooo adorable!
That book sounds pretty interesting… I just got Emily Giffin’s new book, Heart of the Matter, from Amazon, but I haven’t started it yet!
Karen says
I loooove those shades. Bronze is really pretty on the lid along with MAC Teddy (a shimmery golden liner). 🙂
I just looked up that book on Amazon and it looks like a good read. Let me know if you think I need to pick it up after you finish it.
Tiffany says
I love her other books, so I hope it’s good! I’ll let you know what I think when I finish it (which will probably be a while, since I never seem to find time to read, lol).
Karen says
I remember really enjoying Something Borrowed. I never made it Something Blue, though!
The only time I get to sneak in non-work related stuff is before bed! 🙁 I figure at least 15 minutes (or in the case of The Hunger Games… TWO HOURS!) is better than nothing, although most of the time I end up passing out after five minutes.
Lee says
Hey Karen,
its been over a wk since i last posted…i had some withdrawls lol but i was way 2 busy 2 come online
Anyways the colours u tried look really pretty, i would def go the bronze and the night jewel, not so sure how the blue would look on my skin tone though…either way its worth a try with the small cost hehe
Hope everyones having a good wkend 🙂
Karen says
Hi Lee,
Hope you managed to get all your stuff done! I know how it is to be busy, so now worries.
You should really try the blue! I was scared of blue shadow at first, but there are all kinds of ways you can wear it that don’t have to necessarily look over the top. You could apply it along your lash line with a liner brush (w/either a wet or dry head), or do a light dusting just on the lid. This would actually be a great way to experiment, as it only costs a few bucks!
Have a great weekend!
Lee says
Hey again 🙂
I went the shops 2day and got the shadows so ill try them 2morrow 🙂
Im starting a new job but im not really sure about it cos they told me i did all the work perfect in the trial and i am more than capable of doing the job, their only issue is my “tone of voice”…!!! Unfortunately i have a pretty deep voice and they would like me 2 “pitch it higher on the phone 2 perk it up” lol even though they told me i have a very professional manner on the phone and said there was nothing wrong with the way i said anything its just they like the girls on the phone 2 have a higher voice 2 make the customers think everyones so very cheery in the office!!! I happen 2 think the girls sound like total bimbos and i refuse 2 change my voice 4 them especially when theyve admitted theres no real problem with it 😛 plus it would be stupid if i answered the phone like a bimbo then turned round 2 talk with staff in my real voice lol
Anyways i was thinking i can try some nice happy colours 2morrow so if they pee me off i can just look at my makeup and feel better hehehe
oh and i also picked up the mac mineralize foundation 2day 🙂 liquid and the loose powder, i asked 4 a tone just a tiny bit darker than my own and she gave me nc30 it looks nice and my hubby said no i didnt look like my face was orange, so i figure its ok although i might try the one shade lighter soon since its winter almost…
ok i know ive blabbed on so ill stop now lol
Have a great day ppl 🙂
Carolina says
Hi!
First of all – your hair looks amazing!
How do you style it?
Any tips for long hair?
I’ve tried to curl and do locks but the hair looses shape after a few minutes.
Kim says
I completely agree! Your hair looks fabulous!! I wish my hair could naturally look like that!
Karen says
Hi Carolina,
I have a bit of natural wave that I like to work every once in a while. 🙂 To bring it out I put on Bumble & Bumble Curl Conscious Curl Cream for Coarse Curls (it loosens the waves out a little for a more beachy look) right after I get out of the shower. Then, I twist it in pieces and let it air dry. After it’s dry, I’ll apply Bumble & Bumble Brilliantine to a few pieces in the front and the ends to add shine and additional hold.
What do you do when you curl your hair? If it’s stick straight, it helps to add a mousse or gel right after you get out of the shower to add some texture. Then, either allow the hair to either dry on its own or use a blow dryer. After it’s dry, use a curling iron to curl individual pieces throughout — but first, spray each piece with a hairspray or heat protecting setting spray so that the curl really stays in place. Release the curl from the iron, and then hit it with the cool setting on your dryer to lock it into place.
After you’ve got your head full o’ curls, then run your fingers through them to break them up. Spritz them again with a hairspray for additional hold (something like L’Oreal Elnett works great — it holds the hair without weighing it down).
Lemme know if you have any other questions. 🙂

Which ones do you like? I tried the Royal ones and they were waaay too sweet for me.

My favourite colours in this review are Royal Velvet and Night Jewel. I am also intrigued by the story line of The Hunger Games, looks like I need a trip to the library. A friend of my recommended the Uglies series as well, and I am added that to my ever growing reading list. The last book that I have read and loved is Wesley the Owl: The Remarkable Love Store of an Owl and His Girl by Stacey O Brien. It is a very touching autobiography of a biologist who adapted a barn owl when he is 4 days old. It chronicles 19 years of their live together. I highly recommend it because I couldn’t put it down.

Really, I’ve noticed a great imporvement in drugstore brands eyeshadows, first Maybelline and now I see Rimmel is doing a good job also. That is such a great news! I’ve been staying away from Rimmel eyeshadows in the past, I did not even bother to check them, but now I will, especially that gun metal grey shade looks so nice

Love, love, love this shadow. Posh peacock is a perfect teal – it looks much bluer in the package but don’t let that scare you. The bronze is nice too.

I have the Night Jewel…got it for prom. I adore it. I can’t wait to get the rest of them and play around.
As for books…ever read The Road by Cormac McCarthy? It was just made into a movie, but I haven’t seen it…I cried reading the book though. It was sad but beautiful.
