Before going nowhere fast on the treadmill the other day, I lined my lids with Rimmel Exaggerate Waterproof Eye Definer in Deep Ocean.
Like the great Billy Idol once succinctly sang, it was nothing but “SWEAT, SWEAT, SWEAT!” After 40 minutes of running like I was being chased by aliens, I could have filled a bucket (eww!).
One of five shades in a new line of eyeliners, Deep Ocean has an automatic twist-up pencil tip (no need to sharpen, yay!), a striking rich blue tint and a great $6 price.
But (yep, there’s a but) after my run I checked the mirror and saw all sorts of cray-cray. The liner had faded to about half its initial intensity, and that’s the good news — there were also streaks in the crease, below my lashline and even on my cheeks (!). We’re talkin’ Amy Winehouse after she went rogue (gosh, what a waste of a beautiful voice).
Hmm… I haven’t been having the best luck with Rimmel’s latest waterproof eye stuff. Either my body produces some sort of mystery chemical that just doesn’t jive with their stuff, or the products in the line could use some fine tuning (or both).
Please let me know if you’ve had better luck with this than I have. It seems so good in theory… Available at drugstores and online at walgreens.com. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: C

Aww, no photos of the aftermath? 😀
I wear waterproof mascara 90% of the time, and on all weekdays. Once I mistakenly packed the non-waterproof version in my makeup bag. It happened to be the day we were having ‘race day’ in my evening spinning class. Big mistake! I looked frightening but at least I got second place. 😉
Karen says
LOL… trust me, it was NOT cute.
Spinning class is the shizz! Talk about sweating buckets… do you bring a gel seat to class, or do you have those special padded shorts?
Amber says
I’m a cyclist anyway, so I wear my padded shorts!
Karen says
Oh cool. I just recently dusted off out my mountain bike and it reminded me how much fun biking can be. 🙂
Are there lots of places out your way to ride? Cycling is big here in Marin county…
Amber says
I live right smack in the middle of the city and Houston drivers are awful, so I don’t get to ride as much as I did before we moved to TX and when I do it’s all on the road. It is flat, flat, flat here (except for the potholes) and I miss the park where I used to mountain bike in NJ — I knew it like the back of my hand and it had a great ocean overlook.
I visited SF once and did the thing where you rent a bike at the wharf and ride across the bridge to the ferry at Tiburon. That was really fun!
Karen says
You were ten minutes away from me! I actually used to take that ferry every day to work. 🙂
Summer ♥♥ says
I’ll stick with my MAC Navy Stain eyeliner…I absolutely HATE it when I get those nasty streaks on my crease
Karen says
I’m not a fan either. I haven’t tried Navy Stain yet… maybe I’ll play with it next time I hit up MAC!
Rae says
Okay, so the colour’s cute and the price *is* right — but liner on the cheeks? So very not attractive :p
You always make me feel guilty for not working out, Karen! *thinks about my lonlely little treadmill*
Karen says
Give that treadmill some love, Rae!
Tatiana says
Speaking of “sweat, sweat, sweat”, I went to Bikram yoga last night after work and my UD 24/7(Zero on my lid and Underground on my lower lash line) held up like a champ!
Karen says
GO GIRL! I gotta give you props — I so can’t hang with Bikram. For some reason the hot air makes me feel claustrophobic.
Scientific Housewife says
I also have had negative results with this eyeliner, it only lasted me like 4 or 5 hours and was completely gone by the time I came home from work.
Karen says
Have you tried any of the other Rimmel waterproof stuff? I’m starting to wonder if any of it’s good.
Melissa W. says
Well… the color is beautiful at least! Too bad it doesn’t last through a workout at the gym. I may try this to use on days I won’t be sweating buckets though. 😉
Karen says
I hope this works for ya!
Kajal Couture says
Hmmph, I prefet MAC technakohls. Man, I wish I had a treadmill at home! Sometimes its the getting to the gym part that I hate.
Karen says
It makes working out a lot easier, that’s for sure. They are a BIG PAIN to move though. If/when we move out of this place, it’s going to be a nightmare.
Lindsay says
Boo these looked so promising though
Karen says
I know! I’m so bummed.
Sharon says
Darn. I was hoping to read that the liner stayed put — it’s such a pretty colour. The skin around my eyes tends to be oily and I also perspire a lot (side effect of a med I have to take), and so far the only liners that stay where they should are the MUFE Aqua Eyes. Everything else tends to end up going raccoon after a few hours.
Karen says
Hey Sharon,
Have you tried MAC Fluidline gel liners? They stay on pretty well.
Aparnaa says
Dang, I could have used a cheap stayput liner for the spin. (Or the hot yoga. But that probably will NEVER HAPPEN – oh wait, I just read upthread that UD 24/7 does?!) Oh well, I suppose the reason I’m there isn’t for my face, really… meh. There are too many pretty people in my gym.
Karen says
HOT YOGA! I did that once and could not hang. I know a bunch of peeps who love it though. How often do you go?
Aparnaa says
Not super often, maybe once a week or so. I sort of force myself. It’s not the most pleasant thing in the world, for sure…I don’t blame you for not enjoying it!
Karen says
I think part of it was because the class was in a reeeally small room. I have a bit of claustrophobia, and something about the heat and the tininess of the room just felt so oppressive.
I’d like to try it again, though, maybe in more spacious quarters. 😀
Sarah says
You’re not the only one, I promise! I used the very same eyeliner in black and within two hours I had raccoon eyes! NOoo! If only I could find a drugstore eyeliner that won’t budge from my lower waterline! 😀
Karen says
If you find one please let me know! I’m always looking. 🙂
Nina says
Oh wow. I love that color. I have the green and gray Exaggerate liners. Must resurrect them! 🙂
Karen says
Do you have Jungle Green? I will always have a soft spot for that color!
Nina says
Yep thats exactly what I have and im using it today with some gray eyeshadow (Rondelle, I think from the Gentle Fumes quad) … it looks very subtle but they go well together!
Karen says
Wow, talk about a walk down memory lane. That quad’s from Smoke Signals, right?
Nina says
Yep. 😀 I was rummaging through my MAC drawer and there it was sitting lonely at the bottom of the 4 pan palettes … I gave it a whirl and I like the look I came up with! 😀
Kim says
I have to wash my face before working out (and again after) or it’s break-out city. I don’t mind since I don’t like wearing waterproof make-up anyway. I find waterproof mascara the worst thing ever to remove completely. However, I’m very impressed that you’re running hard AND looking great while doing it! I’m not counting this one tragic incident – it’s not your fault that Rimmel let you down! 🙂
Karen says
LOL, well, truth be told if I’m at the gym I’ll usually put a little bit of makeup on, but at home I mostly due it to test stuff! I love it when I get the excuse to test makeup/work out simultaneously. 🙂
Kim says
Cosmetic companies should be required to have a “Treadmill Tested by Karen” seal on all their waterproof stuff, just so we know they’re legit! 🙂
Karen says
Ha ha… they could put a little sticker on their products!!
Happy Friday, btw! What are you doing this weekend?
noemii says
I honestly think that Rimmel eyeliners are some of the worst out there. They just don’t work for me, no matter how much i try to make ’em work. Their mascaras aren’t too shabby but i don’t use mascara enough to care ..
Oh and yes, I actually did buy Kalahari! It’s soo pretty . I think i’ll wear it for my picture at the dmv.. And i also bought Lola Lola. Super pretty brown color . It’s kind of weird how a brown can be “pretty” but i also think that grey is my favorite colour even though grey isn’t technically a color blah blah blah .. And i think i’ll stick with Sephora and the websites of certain brands . Have you ever bought any makeup on eBay ? Last week was my first and last time i think .
Karen says
I’ve had really good luck with their Jungle Green liner in the past. Maybe their waterproof stuff and I are just not meant to be, le sigh!
Glad you have NARS Kalahari in your stash. It’s a must!
As for ebay, although I’m sure there are legit dealers, I’ve heard too many horror stories about fake makeup. I prefer to stroll into Sephora and get instant gratification anyway. Speaking of, I need to visit today… I’ll make a note to check out Lola Lola. 🙂
noemii says
Hmm i have this feeling that i’ve tried that eyeliner. I just remember buying a green Kajal eyeliner from Rimmel like five years ago ..It was my first colored eyeliner. So daring !
It’s so funny that you say that Kalahari is a must, because i was going through your NARS archives to see what else i should get my hands on and i noticed that the Kalahari duo was a part of your Unsung Heroes posts . I feel so smart lol 😛
As for the Lola Lola eyeshadow, i may be a bit biased as it’s my puppy’s name and i kind of adore her.
One of my neighbors sells stuff on eBay and i was watching someone on youtube talking about eBay and i just got suckered in.. Apparently i’ve had an account for about three years but i only just used it this past week ! I was very dubious to say the least, and for good reason. Definitely stick to Sephora :D!
However, half.com is a godsend for used textbooks sometimes for those who need or want books. Kudos to eBay for that 🙂
Karen says
I’m betting it was Jungle Green. That one’s famous!
Aww, you’re so lucky to have a puppy. The other day I was looking at pics of my dog (well, she’s my dad’s dog now since she lives with my parents) when she was a wee baby ten years ago and I got all teary… I wish they could stay small forever.
Lola is such a cute name, btw. Oh! Not sure if you already read her, but maybe check out Sarah Conley at Style It Online. She has a dog named Lola too!

Again, Rimmel disappoints. Honestly, I was hoping this would work, but I guess not. I et it would have gotten a better grade if they hadn’t called it “Waterproof”. Ohh, Rimmel…
Karen says
It’s such a bummer… I’ve tried quite a bit of their stuff and the powder products in general are quite good.
Li Ming says
Annabelle Waterproof Smudgeliners works really well on me. And they’re 50% at Walmart (?) & London Drugs! As they are choosing to discontinue carrying it in their stores…I believe.
http://www.annabellecosmetics.com/Produits/Eyes/Eyeliner/Traceur-Smudgeliner/Smudgeliner—Armour.aspx
I am from Canada…don’t think there is a London Drugs in USA….
Karen says
Thanks Li Ming, for the rec. A few Canadians read the site, so it’s good to know!
Vexy says
Oooh, thank goodness I didn’t buy this last week when it tempted me at the drugstore. It’s summer in south FL: everything I wear must be waterproof or it winds up sneaking all over my face. I swear, non-waterproof makeup in this humidity is like an instant Dali painting. Your eye makeup will wind up on your cheeks, your lipstick on your chin, your blush and foundation will go who knows where..
I made the mistake of wearing Diorshow (non-waterproof) to a wedding last week. When we got there, I had to go in the bathroom and wash it off because it had smudged so badly (I wound up with some on my temples! WTF?!).
Tiffany says
Have you tried the new cover girl liquiliners? I think they’re rad, but I haven’t given them the gym test yet.
Karen says
I’ve had them on my to-test list for a while now. Methinks I’ll have to bust them out during the next treadmill session!
What color(s) do you have?
Tiffany says
Black, brown, and gray. I’ve only tried the black but I looove it. The smudger is awesome.
Karen says
I’ve been looking for a gunmetal gray (ha ha, the same color as our cars). Will have to peep it tomorrow. I need to go to Tar-ghay to buy some crap so I’ll look for ’em.
Rosie says
NYC waterproof pencils are great and cheeeep. Almost as good as Urban decay 24/7 and Make up forever waterproof pencils, They stay put. I have to wear waterproof because of dry eyes. I’m always putting drops in
Karen says
Great to know, Rosie! I’ll have to check those out.
Vesna says
I have one Rimmel eyeliner which I got months ago but now I realize I still haven’t tried it! Have to make that right!
And when it comes to this brand, it’s really a hit or miss – some stuff is excellent and some stuff is just ‘wtf’ 😀
Karen says
No kidding! I’m not crazy about this liner, but the lipsticks and blushes are wonderful.
Amy says
have you tried wet n wild creme eyeliner? I got it on saturday and the staying power is CRAYZAY. I’ve worn it to two concerts and through a 30 day shred work out with NO SMUDGING! drug store gold I tells ya! for $4!
Karen says
OH OH OH… looks like I need to try that one! Hopefully it’ll stand up to a workout. We’ll see. 🙂
noemii says
I’m almost certain it was that eyeliner. Craziness !
Yeah, my puppy is pretty special. She’s about seven months old and super cute in a special way. She’s kind of like a cat-dog. She NEVER barks. Like, ever. My other dog Mindy has to Really piss her off to make her bark and that takes a lot of effort. I want to take her with me to live in my dorm. She’s the offspring of the offspring of a Jack Russell Terrier and a Pug (aka a Jug). I think she’s going to stay little like her daddy. he’s a little runt. I really, Really hope she stays little. She still fits under the couch! My heart breaks a little when i realize she’s getting bigger. And fatter. We’re perfect for each other lol.
Tabs is one sexy cat, though, I must say 😛
I’ve never heard or read that blog before but i’ll definitely check it out. That is so neat!
Karen says
LOL… Jug! I want to meet Lola. She sounds so precious!
Jack Russells are awesome, btw. They are CRAZY smart and have a lot of personality. In my old ‘hood there used to be one that roamed the streets who would always chase me when I went running. 🙁 I never did find out who he belonged to, but he was always out and about, thugging it up on the street corner. I always knew I had to start sprinting when I’d hear those little legs behind me.
Oh, and if you end up checking out Sarah’s site say hi for me. She’s a buddy of mine!
pixie.dw says
The color looks great! but I hate rimmel eyeliners and they just smudge like crazy ~_~…
Jess says
Try Makeup Forever eyeliners. They’re very easy to glide on and uber waterproof. Trust me: I work in a kitchen, and I sweat buckets on a daily basis but I never skip the makeup ritual!
