This morning, shortly after my second cup of coffee but before I put on any makeup, this happened.
Yes, I’m rocking pajamas, and I have not yet filled in my brows (wassup, Raul?!), but I so overtaken by the pink power of Redken’s Color Rebel Hair Makeup in Punked Up Pink ($25) that I couldn’t wait to take pics.
With a low mess factor, it’s a super-easy-to-use temporary hair color. I did this in about 20 minutes.
This color, Punked Up Pink, leans a little more magenta than pink on my dark chocolate brown hair.
The thick, water-resistant formula starts out like a lotion but dries to a fine powder, which, I’m learning right now, lasts through blow drying and styling with a round brush. It’s also supposed to stand up to flat ironing, curling and other kinds of styling, but I haven’t tried those yet.
Twisting the applicator dispenses the product, which comes out through a sponge at the top.
You apply from the sponge directly to dry hair, comb it through, and either wait for it to air dry, or use a blow dryer to speed things along. Apply additional layers for more color intensity.
Redken says that after it sets, the color can last up to two shampoos, depending on how porous your hair is and how much of the product you use.
A couple things though…
- Use gloves. The product doesn’t come with a pair, but I wish it did. I thought I’d be able use it and just walk away without pink fingers if I washed my hands between layers (I did two or three for each section of hair), but even with washing and trying to be careful, I have a couple of bright pink freckles on my fingers.
- Wait until you’re done applying the color before you style your hair. The lotion-y formula starts wet, so any heat styling done before using it will go bye-bye.
When I woke up this morning, I had no intention of using this or any other dye, so I proceeded to curl my hair, doop-da-doo. Numb-nuts that I am, it didn’t occur to me that my curls wouldn’t hold up to my spontaneous hair dying decision (LE SIGH), so I had to go back in and do a rough blow-out after I was done to regain hair control.
Because girls (and guys) love choices, there are a bunch of different colors to choose from. Pink isn’t the only one. There’s also a bright purple (Purple Riot), a glittery gold (Gilty as Charged), a bright coral (Rebel Without a Coral) and a true red (Red-Y to Rock).
There’s also a silver glitter shade, but I don’t know the name of that one.

MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: A
El Hub’s Gilmore grievance
OK, so you know you’ve watched a lot of Gilmore Girls when you think of temporarily dying your hair because of that episode when Lane dyes her hair to rebel against Mrs. Kim.
Remember that awful fake wig in the “after” scene? They should’ve used Redken Color Rebel, yo!
Last night I was Gilmoring it when El Hub turned to me on the couch and said, “Sweetie…I think I’m all Gilmore’d out.”
Haha! I kind of love that he used the word as a verb. 🙂
His eyes were slightly glassy when he said it, too, like he was going through some things.
Seeing an opportunity I couldn’t resist, I replied, “Where you lead, I will follow. Anywhere that you tell me to…”
Gilmore Girls forever!
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Oh my gosh, that looks so cool! 😀 I would LOVE to play around with a temporary hair color like this.

It looks awesome! I need to check these out. I’d probably go for purple since you know how much I love purple 😉

This pink hair color looks totally fun! Love that it’s temporary.

I am glad to see that temporary hair color is getting better (doesn’t look like that will come off on clothes once it dries), because it’s a good way to experiment with color without a big commitment and damage. I love that pink on you! It doesn’t look like it’s too hard to use. On the gloves, I buy 2 boxes of dye because I have very thick hair so I always have an extra set laying around.

I love it! It looks so complex, I kind of like it better since it’s more magenta!
Luv J says
Oooh. This looks cool! Must try! Did it rub off on clothing Karen?
Karen says
Hi Luv J,
Nope, not so far. I had on light colored PJs and didn’t see any pink on them when I finally changed my top!
gio says
This looks awesome! So fun!
Karen says
Hi Gio,
Thank you! And it was a ton of fun, and not too messy, either.
Happy (almost) Friday. What are your plans for the weekend?
Christie says
This looks so cool and I’d love to try it on my own hair!
…but $25 for that seems really steep.
Karen says
Hi Christie,
I think it’s because the bottle is supposed to last a while. A little goes a long way. 🙂
Have you tried out temporary color on your hair before?
Christie says
That’s good to know! I was wondering how much of the bottle gets used and if you can keep it for later use. I’ve been wanting to try a colorful ombre, so if I can re-use this, it might be worth the price.
I did experiment with purple streaks once in high school. They were supposed to be permanent, but washed out in about a week, so I guess that counts. 🙂
Karen says
Purple sounds fun! It’s one of those tough shades to keep in, though. I did red once (like crazy bright clown red) and it was an uphill battle keeping the color in.
Hope you’re having a nice day so far! Got any plans for Halloween?
Christie says
Red is definitely a challenging color. I had it last year and I felt like so much of it rinsed out every time I washed my hair.
I do! I’m throwing a Halloween costume party for my bad movie group. I purposefully pick out so-bad-they’re-funny movies to make fun of with a group of people every few weeks. It’s a fun hobby. 🙂

I did pink ombre recently and used The Body Shop Hair Chalk, which was conveniently on sale when I got it.
No gloves needed, you just “Paint” it on rubbing the pot on your hair. Absolutely not messy, gone after one wash, great for playing around.
Although I wouldn’t use it too often, I had the feeling it dried my hair out a little.
Karen says
Hi LindaLibraLoca,
Oh how fun! I tried something similar to that once and made such a mess! The whole bathroom was covering in pink dust, sigh.
Happy (almost) Friday, by the way. 🙂

Totally gonna try this! I’ve been looking for a fun, temporary Manic Panic style hair color that I could rock without the commitment or damage. First time seeing these. I’ll go by Ulta to see if they have. Wish they had a blue color. I’ve got a ’70s style ‘fro that I wear in a twist out occasionally. Think it’ll be fun to have pink highlights going thru my Afro textured hair. Super glad you shared this. And pink suits you

Love those PJs. Some days I could stay in my PJs well past noon. Don’t tell my DH, OK?
Gilmore Girls forever. I have ALL the seasons on DVD. That show made me want to read more and more and more.
Stefi says
Haha such a funny story with the Gilmore Girls, that was my first thought, also :))
You look good even with no makeup and pink hair (which, by the way, is a gorgeous color!!), how is that even fair?!
Love, Stefi
Iris says
Wow, that works very well on dark hair! I also like how it’s easy application. A lot of them require mixing to apply.
Icequeen81 says
Yayy I would love to have this, I was looking for a color like this.
I love magenta in hair

SO happy you’re watching Gilmore Girls Karen! Holds such a special place in my heart. Lane would defs think you’re a hair God right about now. And if you ask me…I think the cucumber soda is to blame for Lane’s laps of judgement 😉 Have you ever watched Charmed before? You probably have, but I just had to ask. It’s another show I love watching along with GG. Have you seen/heard of the new show Reign? It’s a fictional story line based on Mary Queen of Scotts and it’s HELLA GOOD. I’m obsessed.
Phyrra says
I love this on you! It’s so pretty!
breyerchic04 says
I might grab this. I did permanent pink highlights (well low lights I guess, my hair was already medium blonde) last fall. They were bright and gorgeous for a while and then faded into this subtle rose gold. Most of it has grown out and been lightened by now but there are a few tiny spots where I still see pink!
Erin says
OMG I NEED THIS!
Laarni says
I thought your new hair color was purple! Never tried temporary hair color before but this looks fun!!! Let me check this product!
Karen says
Technically the product is hot pink but it ended up magenta on me, LOL! Still, fun. Happy Halloween!
Kim says
Well, you did a fab job with the color because I thought this was a salon job in your last couple of posts (before I scrolled down here). Looks like cool stuff!! 🙂
Karen says
They have a bunch of different colors; if you can find a shade that matches the team colors of one of the twins’ teams it might be a fun way to show some spirit.
I washed my hair last night with shampoo and most of the color stayed in! It’s really very cool.
On an unrelated note, yes, we still need to talk about The Walking Dead. I’m kind of worried about the direction the group is going in, and I’m seriously afraid for Glenn’s life, because in this show, it seems the minute someone becomes the moral compass, BAM, they’re gone.
Kim says
It’s funny you say that about Glenn because you’re right about the moral compass. That situation is worse for me because I’m convinced that Eugene is a huge fraud. If I really believed in him, I’d probably be more irritated with Rick’s decision to stay but I hate to see them break up. Of course, that’s what drives the story and the drama, so luckily I’m not on the writing staff! 🙂 I thought the church scene was particularly harsh but I was glad they eliminated that threat (not just for their own sake but for every other poor soul who crossed paths with the Terminus folks). I’m afraid for Tyrese, too. All these experiences truly have broken him, whether Rick wants to see it or not. I didn’t watch last night but am very interested in Beth’s side story. It didn’t appear from the previews that it is going to be pleasant, naturally. 🙁

LOVE IT!! I’m always on the lookout for these types of colours/shades and this looks gorgeous. I just havent seen this in store anywhere here (in montreal) tho:(
