Seeing these Lippmann Collection fall nail polish colors ($15 each) for the first time, I thought one thing: VEGAS, BABY! The red, black, white and black-purple colors remind me of playing cards.
Beyond the occasional slot machine (free drinks!), I’m not much of a gambler, but when it comes to nail colors, I will take chances. I’ll wear yellows, blues and even purples.
Some may feel these fall Lippmann colors are a bit tame, but I think there’s enough variety among the shades to keep things interesting.
Stop and Stare, a blue-based matte red, looks like a sure bet. Picture a lounge singer in a smokey bar. She’s wearing a slinky, black dress and Stop and Stare on her fingertips. It’s a beautiful, classic red that would look great at dressy daytime events (meet me at the polo match, dahling), formal evenings out or even a day at the office. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A
Rhapsody in White takes me back. This frosty cool white looks exactly like a shade of Wet ‘n Wild I wore through most of the sixth grade. I wasn’t around for the 60s, but this reminds of that era, as in pale lips, bee hive bouffants and go go boots. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B
The inky Fade to Black is darker than night. I’m on the fence about black as a nail color because of how high maintenance the shade can be, but all of the Lippmann polishes I’ve used before have chipped less often than most other brands do. If this black matte is as durable as the rest, it could really make a name for itself. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B
Pump Up the Jam, a dark purple shimmer, looks almost like another shade of black from afar, but it reveals its true color when seen up close. It’s the deepest shade of eggplant imaginable. I’ve always dreamt of owning a Chevy El Camino in this exact color (and ridin’ dirty in it, haaay!). Is that weird? Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A
Lippmann Collection polishes have a reputation in the beauty world. They’re known for their durability, and that’s not hype, either; early last month I got a mani/pedi at the Lippmann nail bar in Hawaii, and the coral color on my toes is STILL fresh and intact. I’ve been reapplying top coat every five days, but even that, with most other brands of polish, would not have been enough to make the color last as long as it has so far.
I wish these polishes were a little less expensive, but since they last as long as they do, I still think they’re a pretty good bargain.
Budget Police Alert!

This morning I got a big, fat dose of DISS from the neighbor’s tabby cat. He likes to hang out on top of a fence on a nearby hill that I can see from my front door. When I call him he usually bounds down the hill to me, running up the stairs, into the house and straight into the kitchen for Friskies. But this time when I called out to him, he sat up, stretched and walked away. I’m kinda heartbroken.
Despite the haterade I got from the neighbor’s cat, I’m doing pretty well so far for a Tuesday. My desk is still clean (it’s been two whole days). I guess that’s something. 🙂
Two days clean!
What’s going on, girlfriend? How has your day been?

I’m loving that purple one, Pump up the jam. I’m definitely going to check out your cheaper recommendations too! Knowing me I’ll buy the two cheaper ones and then decide to buy the Lippmann one too 😛

Ooh, what a lovely desk! Me wants some Apple, too! It’s the coolest computer ever.
It’s all good here. Today I was working at the company of my aunt’s friend. Just posting off letters and such. I’m exhausted, hah. So yeah, the adventures in Stockholm. Well, mostly we just did a lot of shopping (clothes & make up) during the two weeks we spent there. We visited the museum of modern art, too, and spent a day by the sea as well. All in all, it was a fun experience. It was the longest period of time I had ever spent in Stockholm, and I’m glad I was able to do it. I got to speak Swedish, too, which was great since you never get enough practise back here in Finland. I’ll be posting some pics on my blog (shopping pt. 1 is there already!) so you get to see what it looks like there 🙂
I’m sooo exhausted right now, gotta hit the sack. Tomorrow I’m heading to my grandma’s 72th B’day party, yay 🙂
How’s life in your end? I hope you’ve enjoyed your week so far. Take care!
PS. I’m sure the tabby was just having something REALLY important (like grilled fish or mice, lol) to think about today – it’s a new day tomorrow! If he ain’t up for some Friskies, call 911! ;P

Hey Karen,
Haven’t written in awhile, and I must say that those nail polish look fantabulous 🙂 I love you’re blog so much because you always update it constantly and always have your two cents about everything 🙂 Keep up the good work!

Wow, your desk is very neat. Mine is in an eternal state of messiness. And you got flowers? Girl, I need to learn from you. I heart da red polish. I’m wearing some red on my toe nails as well, makes me feel really fiesty. That’s what a girl need, isn’t it?
Lucky says
Oh, how I lurrrrve nail polish! Since the Lippmann ones are out of my budget (for now), do the subs that you listed last just as long as their pricey sisters? Just wondering b/c I’m looking for cheaper polish that the “designer” names, but I don’t want to sacrifice quality…what say you? Or anyone?

OMG! That’s the Bambi from the Paul & Joe disney collection packaging! I still want skunk powder! 😀
I went out on a makeup adventure today (it being the first of the month and therefore marking the refilling of my monthly fund)! I went by my local MAC and tried on the mineralize blush in Dainty (I’m going on vacay next week so I can’t pick it up on launch day), very pretty! I pre-ordered. Then I went to Nordstrom and tried on Bwack Peawl. I wasn’t wowed, actually, it was a little too gray. So I was wearing it around while I explored the department and bought some Clinique Supermoisture foundation (my plan was ultimately to wear it out into natural light and see what I thought of it).
Then it happened… I got Chanel’ed but good! Just I was congratulating myself on my self-control (trying to save cash for vacation spending) I ambled around the corner and came face to face with the new Fall collection! Aagh! My “budget” went out the window! I snapped up the gold glossimer and the denim blue eyeliner! Gorgeous! The quad is divine and the LE face powder for the Nordstrom Anniversary was out too! I’m trying to restrain myself from pre-ordering, but the force is strong!

I really like the purple/eggplant one. Sooo pretty. Will probably be picking it up.
Love the desktop picture. Fancy!

Pretty! I like the purple color a lot. I’m a big fan of OPI’s Lincoln Park at Midnight.
Bambi is a nice touch on the desktop!
I’m on vacation all week – lovin’ it.

Thanks for the swatches!! I really love the dark purple one. I’m definitely going to try the drugstore dupes!!!

Hi Brittany K.,
I like it too. It’s very pretty when you see it in person. The shimmer is very fine and it’s so dark.
LOL, that’s something I would totally do,too!
Karen says
Hi Aleks,
Sounds like you had a really fun trip, and that you did a good mix of things. That’s cool that you got to use your language skills while on vacay (how many do you speak?). I’m looking forward to seeing all your pics and will head on over to your site in a few.
Things on this end are great. I had a really long, intense day work wise. My knee is feeling better, so I went for a run after work. Now I’m just chillin’ and watching Star Wars Episode II.
Have fun at your grandma’s party tomorrow. 🙂
Oh – keep meaning to ask you, how are you liking your Beiges Velours quad?
Karen says
Hi Xtina!
How are ya, girl? Are you having a good summer so far? I hope so.
I am totally enamored with the Lippmann line. Yeah, the colors aren’t as flashy as China glaze but they are still fun.
Have a good one. 🙂
Karen says
Hi Dao,
LOL, girlfriend, you should’ve seen it before I cleaned it off. It was covered in makeup, piles of paper, pens… I swear I went through one pile and found two MAC Paint Pots that’ve been MIA for the last month. 🙂
Karen says
Hi Lucky,
I’ve used Sally Hansen in the past and they work pretty well and have a nice finish (reminds me of Essie). They’re good for the price. One thing that helps is to get a really shiny, long lasting topcoat. My favorites are Seche Vite. It’s 10 bucks, but it’ll last you forever!
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
Dag nabbit, woman! Now I’m going to have to go to Nordstrom in the morning and attempt exercise my Jedi powers of self restraint (I’m watching Episode II right now).
How are you liking the Clinique foundation? Did it look good in natural light?
Karen says
Hi Marisol,
It’s a wallpaper I got from the Paul & Joe site. I do love their stuff!
You won’t be disappointed when you see the purple in person. Super, super gorgeous.
Karen says
Hi Laurie,
Lucky girl! Doing anything special this week for vacation, are you just chilling?
Karen says
Hi Phantom Goddess,
You’re welcome. 🙂 Have a good evening!
Glosslizard says
Ooh, good luck with that self-restraint thing! 😉
I really like the Clinique foundation! I got a sample of it and then ignored it for a while, but when I tried it I was really impressed! I apply moisturizer, then sunscreen, then the foundation, and it really helps my skin stay hydrated all day! Some of the MUAers complained about the shimmer, but I apply it very sheer (I basically treat it like a tinted moisturizer and spread it very thin) and it just keeps me even and glowy all day without little 5 o’ clock fine lines! The only thing that would make it better… the Chanel illuminating powder on top… aah, nuts!

I’m loving Pump Up the Jam. Wasn’t that a song from the 90s? And speaking of Vegas, I’ll be going there in a week. I hope I can survive the 3 digit temp there. Oy!
Sanita says
Hello Karen! Doesn’t that Pump Up the Jam reminds you of Dior Liquorice a bit?
Eru says
Hi Karen!
I definitely choose Fade to black. I love black nails. 😀
By the way, your desk looks nice! Hope it lasts! (Mine is always a mess, so I understand the success of having it clean for two whole days)
Hugs!!!
Eru 😀

Wowm those colours are so vibrant and gorgeous!
I’ve never heard of Lipmann though, haha.
I’m a sucker for reds so I chose Stop & Stare 😀

My mum just told me she really doesn’t want to go to Disneyland… Allright, we’re leaving tomorrow and everything’s paid. Great. really great.

Hey Karen!
Those colors look awesome…I saw a random posts of yours “stressing” over a friends party “pole dancing” having to wear booty shorts. I think I’m going through that anxiety now. 🙂 I’ve got to go to one this weekend. Those nail polish colors go well with my outfit in mind especially the purple one. The bride to be wants everyone geared up and not in workout clothes. pray for me!!!
Karen says
Hey Glosslizard,
Just give in already! You know eventually, LOL!
Ahhh, shimmer in foundation. That’s smart to treat it more as a tinted moisturizer. I’ve always had issues with shimmer foundations in the past so maybe applying less would prevent the greasy look that the illuminating formulas tend to give me.
Karen says
Hi Lehea,
Yup, I so danced to that in class back in the day. What cracks me up is that El Hub actually did martial arts routines to that song waaay back when too (but wait, it gets better — he had to do ’em at the mall), LOLOL.
“Get your booty on the floor tonight… make my day!”
How exciting that you’re heading to LV! Are you gonna gamble? I hope you win big money! Play a few spins at the Wheel of Fortune for me. 🙂
Karen says
Hi Sanita,
A lil’ bit! To me Pump Up the Jam is just a touch more purple, and Dior is more maroon. They are both really nice, deep, dark colors!
Karen says
Hi Eru,
Do you have any tips on keeping up a your black nails? Mine look good for about two days and then they start chipping like crazy.
I hope my desk stays clean, too. *crosses fingers*
What’s new with you, girlie?
Karen says
Hi Julie,
Yah, I hadn’t either really until I went to their nail bar. The polish lasts a really long time, which is why I like it.
How’s your week been so far?
Karen says
Hi Karen B.,
Hmm, looks like you’re just gonna have to find a way to guilt/bribe your mom into going (“but mom, it’s the happiest place on earth!”).
Hope things work out and that you get to take your trip, girlie.
Karen says
Hi PeeChee,
Ohhh boy. Good luck to you, girl. I figure though, if you’re going to do it, go all the way. Maybe you can somehow find a way to get a feather boa up in the mix?
One of the girls in our group ended up bringing a bottle of wine, LOL.
Have fun this weekend! How is your new job, btw?

Rhapsody in White looks like a white you can actually wear.

Hi Karen,
I love seeing your desk! so cute, it looks like a catalog page (pottery barn or crate and barrel)….I mean that as a compliment since I want to live in a Pottery Barn, haha! I’ve never tried Lipman polishes mostly due to the price, and they are hard for me to find. But I love the durablility report.
Roxy says
I want them ALL! Thanks for the post and the photos as I wasn’t thinking I needed to have them until I saw this … you’re doing wonders for my wallet, girl! xo

I enjoy it. I do really love the China Glaze collection more than this one :/ It’s much flashier, but I think that’s what makes it unique.
