Paul & Joe, those purr-veyors of pretty products for makeup-loving cat ladies, have a new summer collection out, and in a shocking development, it features absolutely no cats (other than the one I hired to model for the top picture’s background).
As in NADA GATOS.
Wait — what?
That’s right! The theme for the limited edition summer 2015 collection is Midnight Sangria.
Obviously, this is throwing off my internal crazy cat lady barometer…so I have supplemented these photos with additional cats. 🙂
The collection includes five nail polishes, three eyeshadow duos, three lipglosses, five mascaras and again, zero cats.
Despite the lack of kitty action, I still think the collection is beautiful, and the products are easy to wear.
For starters, in terms of application, you can leave your brushes behind, because Paul & Joe designed the eyeshadow duos (which combine a shimmery neutral shade with a shimmery pop of blue, green or bronze) and sheer glosses to be applied quickly on your lids and lips with a finger. Just add one or two coats of mascara, and you’re done.
Then, with all of the time you will have saved applying your makeup, you’ll be able focus on your claws/paws by painting them with one of the collection’s five nail polishes.
After playing with all three eyeshadow duos, one of the glosses and four of the five nail polishes, I like the nail polishes and eyeshadow duos the best.
The bright polishes are so BOMB. They dry quickly (10 minutes, give or take), shine brightly, and the creamy shades (the red, yellow and pink) are filled to the brim with pigment. Just as a heads up, though, the one that appears to be the darkest based on the bottle, Crushed Grapes 006, is actually sheer.
As for wear time, all of them last a while, even without a base or top coat. Like three or four days, which seems pretty good to me, seeing as how I’m rougher on my nails than a cat’s tongue.
Oh, and this is nice: they smell really great! I believe the polishes are scented, because when they dry, I smell jasmine on my claws.
As for the eyeshadow duos, also great. Paul & Joe normally does moderately pigmented shadows, but Mambo Mambo 001, Ole 002 and Argentine Tango 003 are all a little more pigmented than usual for the brand.
Yes, they’re also shimmery, but the shimmer particles are fine, so my fine lines are like, “It’s coo’, baby girl. It’s coo’.”
I’m not head-over-heels in love with the lipgloss, to be honest, because the formula feels a little too sticky for my taste, and I swear that my lips feel drier after wearing it, but at least it doesn’t disappear in a flash. I get three or four hours of wear time.

That lip gloss is amazing.
What were they thinking, no kitties??
Karen says
Everything is better with a cat or two or twelve!
Lauren S. says
I agree, simply nothing is complete without kitties! :3

“If you liked it then you should’ve put a cat on it” is my motto. LOL!
Lauren S. says
That should be totally made into a thing, ASAP. 🙂

Hi Karen! I wasn’t sure where else to post this but I have a quick question. I’m an eyeshadow newbie and looking for a palette that is good for a beginner. I prefer a more neutral eye look and have fair, cool-toned skin. I feel like most of the palettes I see are all warm ones! Any recommendations?
Karen says
Hi Hillary,
Check out the BECCA Ombre Nudes palette. Lots of mattes (which you’ll always need) that are easy to blend, and not too warm. If mattes aren’t your thing let me know and I can throw out a few more options.
HILARY says
That looks like a great choice, thanks! What would a good non-matte option be?

MAC has a beautiful cool-toned neutral palette with lots of shimmers (and a few mattes too). It’s called Eye Shadow X 15/Cool Neutral and I like it a lot. Here’s a review:

It’s too bad the gloss is sticky and drying because I find them so beautiful! The colors look so juicy.

That lipgloss looked so pretty, like MAC Ripe Peach in a gloss, I would have been all over it.
Too bad it doesnt transfer too well.
Kiss & Make-up says
Awww, too bad the gloss feels so sticky and actually dries your lips out a bit. That makes it a no no then. It’s a shame because I loved how it looked in the pan.
Also: Cats! Yeah! Woo!
Kim says
Well, you know I like sangria almost as much as cats, so… 🙂 Bummer on the gloss because it was my fave in the pan. I love the sunrise/sunset look of it. The little polish bottles are adorable too. I really like the shape.

Wow the lipgloss in it’s packaging looks amazing! I certainly appreciate your honest review and swatch! You saved me the trouble! I can just look at the picture and ooh and ahh over it!

I like the Sanguinello lipgloss, really fresh and sexy for the summer. I don’t know why, but I immedietly imagined it in my summer bag, on a beach, warm day, sea, sand…Ok, I need vacation and yes please, I need a cute kitty!! 🙂
