I was up until three last night/this morning reading my new book, The Time Traveler’s Wife, and, because I stayed up so late, I woke up late. After writing my first post, I was left with barely 15 minutes to get ready for work.
Not good.
Making matters worse, my hair was extra greasy and gross (sexy, I know) this morning. With very little time to get ready, I had to make a difficult decision — either I could wash my hair, or skip washing and use the time to apply minimal makeup instead.
I chose to go with the minimal makeup, but my questionable decision didn’t subject the general population to stinky Karen hair. Nope! I used one of my favorite secret short cuts for time strapped mornings: dry shampoo.
It’s an absorbent spray-on powder you apply to your roots to cut down on oil and grease. It can’t replace a cleansing hair wash, but it helps in a pinch.
The product I’m using goes by the name of Ojon Hair’s Rub-Out Dry Cleanser ($24), and I like it a lot.
One big issue I’ve had with dry shampoos in the past is that quite a few brands smell really terrible, but not Rub-Out. It smells like a mix of citrus and baby powder. The product does a great job cutting down on the shine and relieves any scalp itchiness. I wouldn’t say it cleans hair, but it certainly makes it look better.
The product comes in two sizes — a large, 4.5 oz can for $24 and a wee 2 oz travel-sized can for $10. The small can fits well into small bags, making it extra handy for travel. It gets major points in my book. One beef I’ve had with my other favorite dry shampoo, Rene Furterer’s Naturia Dry Shampoo, has been the size of the can. At 3.2 ounces, Naturia takes up a lot of room in my toiletries bag. Ojon’s tiny can packs easily, so big props for actually making the travel size, well, travel-sized.
Ojon Rub-Out Dry Cleanser
Price: $10 for a 2 oz can; $24 for a 4.5 oz can
Use: To remove greasiness from hair roots and to extend your blowout
Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B+
You can find Ojon’s Rub-Out Dry Shampoo at Sephora stores nationwide.
My book wasn’t the only thing that kept me up late last night. Ever since I saw 27 Dresses the other night I haven’t been able to get Bennie and the Jets (by Elton John) out of my head. Lying in bed I kept thinking, “Bennie! Bennie! Bennie … and the Jets!” I’m stuck in karaoke mode.
Do you have a song stuck in your head today?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

That book is so good! I think I stayed up really late the night I finished it too. I did that earlier in the week with some used book one of my friends gave me. Not that it was particularly good…just funny and interesting enough to hold my attention. It was called Diary of a mad bride.
I’ve never tried dry shampoo. I don’t know… I feel like my hair is not so much greasy…and more often just has too much product on it…I usually shampoo every other day though. I need to start looking for a new regimen though. I think my hair is changing as I get older. 🙁
No songs stuck in my head today…
but we’re having insane torrents and storms…and overnight guests since some friends are without power… and ours is on 🙂

Wonderwall by Oasis. I heard it on the way to work this morning, and even listening to the likes of Thievery Corporation on Pandora all afternoon haven’t kept it from cropping back up. “But after aaaalllllll … you’re my wonder-waaaaaaaaallllllll …”

I thought it was just me!! I saw 27 Dresses last Friday and I sing that song every day. I had to stop myself today because I was singing it while trying to find something to eat in the fridge… moving things to the beat. It’s sad.haha
I have tried this Ojon rub-out dry cleanser but I didn’t like it that much! It made my hair feel really gross. I tried it for about a month at different times, but never got the hang of it. Which is a bummer because I love the idea. I’ll have to experiment with other brands.

Love the book!! One of my faves 😛
I will definitely look into the rub-out, I’ve been looking for a dry shampoo and it was a great review! I do want something that smells great, too, and this sounds like a winner! Can you post a photo of it in your hair one morning, though? I’d really like to see how it looks 🙂

Hmm…I can probably use that on my Hawaiian vacay if I happen to sport the “beachy wave” look. 😀 I tend to get the greasies once in a while, so I totally feel you on that part! Lately I’ve been loving the song “Dangerous” by Kardinal Offishal feat. Akon. Makes me feel like clubbing, which I actually haven’t done in a while.

I can totally understand where you are coming from with the stinky hair. I can pull off two days before my hair becomes an oil slick. I’ve been wanting to try Psssst dry shampoo because it’s at CVS, which is right across the street from my job.
BTW, the song that I have suck in my head is Paradise By The DashBoard Light – Best Song EVER!

I have this ojon rub out cleanser and i LOVE IT. i tried two other brands before buying this one, and wasn’t so pleased. one of them was from renee something i forgot.

Hi Megan,
I am really starting to like the book. In the beginning the narration is very disjointed, so I was just confused, but now the pieces are falling into place so it’s getting good!
I can say that I’ve noticed that my hair is changing as I get older. It’s still thick, but not as thick as it as it was in my 20s. 🙁 Oh, and there’s the whole grey hair thing. Everybody on my dad side goes grey early, and it looks like I inherited that set of genes.
Stay dry and safe, girl! I hope the power stays on…
Karen says
Hi Jessica,
I had that one stuck in my head a few days ago, too. It’s a great shower song. “There are many things that I would like to say to you, but I don’t know how…” Damn, I wish I wrote that. I love that line. 🙂
Karen says
Hi Jax,
Thanks, homie! 🙂
I love that DK song, too (“Do-do you got a first aid kit handy?”)We did a routine a few weeks ago in my hip hop class and it was really cute! My teacher did this totally fierce, sexy, girly dance (which isn’t her usual style) and the music really took it to the next level. Do you have the entire Welcome to the Dollhouse CD? Do you like it?
Karen says
Hi Bridget,
LOL, thank god I’m not the only one. I actually looked up the lyrics and found that half of the words I was singing were wrong. 🙂
If you don’t like Ojon maybe give Naturia a try (in the green can). I’ve found that just short bursts of product to the roots (rather than a continuous spray) works better for me. Other wise, I end up over applying and my scalp starts feeling gross.
Karen says
Hi Rae,
Oh great! I’m about a quarter of a way in so now I’m really looking forward to seeing how the story develops, since everyone is raving about the book. 🙂
The biggest diff I notice is in volume. You know how after a few days your hair just looks really flat at the roots? Using this totally gives the root area lift. It’s amazing.
I will try to remember to take a pic one of these mornings. When I’m rushed I can barely multi task, LOL!
Karen says
Hi Lehea,
I haven’t gone clubbing in a long time, either. I think I’m going to go with my dance buddy when I get back from Hawaii, though. I’ll use it as an excuse to work off all the shave ice I’m sure I’ll be eating. 🙂
BTW, I love the beach wave look! Have you heard of Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray? It’s supposed to help achieve that tousled, beach-y, wavy look.
Karen says
Hi Phantom Goddess,
I’ve seen Psst before! I’m probably going to pass, though, because I tried a drugstore dry shampoo about a year ago and I was totally traumatized by it. I’m going to stick to the Naturia and Ojon, me thinks. If you try it and really like it, please lemme know, though! 🙂
Oh, I haven’t heard that song! Time to go looking on youtube!
Karen says
Hi Jenny,
Oh yeah, that’s Renee Furterer’s Naturia. I like that one… I just wish it came in a smaller can. Have you used any other Ojon stuff? I’m going to try the hair mask next. 🙂
Megan says
Yeah I know what you mean about the beginning…it was that way for me too. I did stay dry and safe… but we headed out for some margaritas and chips and salsa…that was fun.
So I’m not so much having the gray problem yet (although my dad went gray young too). I just think it’s getting dryer lately…when I haven’t changed anything…it’s just weird.
Karen says
Oh fun! I love margaritas (on the rocks, with salt, please!).
If your hair is getting drier then it’s good you’re doing the every other day shampoo thing. Seriously, makes a huge diff. When mine is feeling extra crispy one thing I do is coat the lower half with conditioner and just use shampoo on the roots and top half. It seems to help a bit.
I am actually venturing into the world of hair masks! I dunno if they’ll help but I hope they do.
Shefali says
I use Oscar Blandi’s dry shampoo and I really like it.
No songs in my head today. Having major family issues and that’s what’s on my mind 🙁
Megan says
I like my margarita’s the same way! 🙂
Yeah I always do it that way…a stylist taught me that years ago…so I always shampoo my roots only and condition from an inch or two from the scap to the ends. I’ve used the same shampoo and conditioner for the past couple years with no issue until probably the last 4-5 months. I don’t know. I’ve been thinking of trying DevaCurl which has the Lowpoo and Nopoo etc. that is supposed to be good. Either that or Curl Life by matrix…which a friend recommended. You’ll have to keep me posted on the hair masks.
Karen says
Hi Shefali,
I have yet to try that line. When I’m done with the Ojon then that’s up next. 🙂
Sorry to hear about your family stuff. Stay strong, friend.
Karen says
Hi Megan,
I used the DevaCurl Low-Poo and Conditioner in the past. It’s good, but pricy. People also seem to be very divided about the smell. It’s strong, and you’ll either love it or hate it. Have you had a Deva cut before? I went to a salon in SF that did that. You come in with your hair air dried in its natural curl pattern, and then the stylist cuts it dry. After that, the hair is washed and then dried again, and then the stylist does a few more touch up snips to get the curls to fall just right. When I had shorter hair I really liked this method (LOL, I sort of stopped doing it when my hair got long… now it has a mind of it’s own).
Karen B says
For once I haven’t got a song in my head. Hmm, okay, now that I think about that I do have one in my head. The Beatles (She loves you)… hehe That comes from studying my Contemporary music course.. lol
Megan says
I’ve never done that with a cut…and my stylist now does awesome with my hair. I may have to try it. I haven’t decided yet though… I’m not out of shampoo and conditioner yet…so I’ve been putting it off. Part of me feels like I should just throw away what I have left and buy soemthing new though…
Karen says
Hi Karen B.,
I love that song! I grew up on a steady diet of Beatles music (my dad saw them live!) so I know most of their tunes. My favorite will always be Blackbird.
Karen says
Hey Megan,
Girl, seriously, it’s so hard to find somebody who can cut curly hair. If you love your stylist then don’t go creeping!
I totally understand the need to finish bottles, ’cause I’m the same way. In the past I used products that weren’t quite right for my hair because I didn’t want to waste them, but then I ended up with really dry, fried hair. 🙁 If your hair is thirsty then you need to give it some new product, especially with summer coming up!
Rachel says
oh. my. god. me too! i watched 27 dresses two nights ago and i’ve been singing bennie and the jets CONSTANTLY! “she’s got electric boots…a mohair suit….you know i read it in a magaziiiine!!!!”

Very embarrassingly… “Mambo Number 5” all bloody morning. Somebody help me!!!
P.S.: Have you tried Matrix Biolage Oil Control Treatment? Quick rub at the roots and a cold air blust with a hairdryer makes your hair super fresh! Smells like minty pear, mmmmm…. Love it!
Girl-Woman says
We love the smell of Ojon, too. Out of all we have tried, it’s our favorite “oxymoron” dry shampoo.
Glosslizard says
I don’t use dry shampoos (I think my hair is just not the right texture for them or something), but if you’re thinking of a mask, I love Oscar Blandi’s hair masks! I got the little variety pack from Sephora and it seems like there should be one for every hair type! I luuuuurve the Trattamento di Jasmine, it makes my hair so silky!
We just picked up the new Lego Indiana Jones game for the Playstation, and my seven-year-old sings, “In-di-a-na Jooones! In-di-a-naaaa Jo-o-ooones!” to the theme music, so now that’s in my head! 🙂
Karen says
Hi Medin,
LOL, I had to listen to that song after I read your comment. I hadn’t heard it for years and now it’s totally stuck in my head. (“A little bit of Monica in my life…”)
I’ve never tried that Biolage treatment. It sounds really refreshing, though. Will check it out! Have a good day. 🙂
Karen says
Hi Girl-Woman,
It has a great smell! What other brands have you tried?
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
That’s so cute! Strangely enough, I would probably really like that Lego game.
I know you love your Oscar Blandi. 🙂 Okay, putting that mask on the list…
Glosslizard says
It is a super-fun game (the Lego Star Wars series is great too), I’d recommend it for anyone!
Michelle says
I just bought this a couple of weeks ago. I didn’t like the smell at first, but I think that’s because I used too much. When I used it the second time, I only sprayed my part (the bottle says to spray all over hair, but that’s what I did the first time and the smell was with me all day). I wash my hair every other day and on the morning in btw. I like to use this to soak up any grease (my hair tends to be a bit greasy in the summer). I would definitley recommend this product.
Clueless Cat says
I LOVE that book! It’s definitely one of my faves. 🙂
As for dry shampoo, I’ve used Toni & Guy’s once (got sent it from some PR ppl), but definitely prefer actually washing my hair. lol I hate the icky feeling of dirty hair!
Phantom Goddess says
Hi Karen! I’m definitely going to try Psst, but I’m going to try the one formulated for Brunettes, because my hair is brown. LOL.
I <3 Paradise By The DashBoard Light, it is really funny. It’s all about teenage hormones and what the boy will say and do in order to “go all the way tonight” hehehe….

Hi Glosslizard,
For some reason, despite all the technology that permeates our house, El Hub and I are deficient in the gaming arena!
If the Lego game is anything like tetris then I’d probably LOVE IT! Puzzle games are the only games I’m good at.
Karen says
Hi Michelle,
Yeah, if it was sprayed all over I can see how it could be overwhelming. I spray it on my roots, too. Just a few quick spritzes and I’m good to go!
Karen says
Hi Clueless Cat,
I would wash my hair with shampoo every day if I could, but it dries out my hair and zaps the color. In the beginning it took some getting used to but eventually it got easier and easier.
Karen says
Hi Phantom Goddess,
OHHH GIRL! You better be careful with those tinted versions! I tried a black tinted spray by Salon Grafix and it was AWFUL. The entire bathroom got coated in a sooty black mist. 🙁 And my got covered with it too… I looked like a chimney sweep.
