Smokey eyes? Check. Vampy lips? Check. Along with the return of boots, sweaters and new episodes of some of my favorite TV shows (counting down the days ’til The Mentalist premiere, holla!), fall also heralds the return of bold makeup colors for lips and eyes.
I’ll gladly climb aboard the drama-for-yo’-mama makeup train, but it’s not hard to overdose on bold color statements that take a look from chic to cheap.
So when I’m wearing a smokey eye or a dark lip, I’ll tend to go with sheer colors on my cheeks (for balance), colors like Philosophy’s new You Make Me Blush Duos ($25) powder blushes.
There are four available — Hugs/Kisses, Happy/Healthy, Honest/True and Happy/Healthy. I have the Happy/Healthy duo, which comes with two matte blushes, one a warm orangey brown and the other a blue-based pink.
I know, I know! 🙂 The colors look *crazy* bright in the pan, but both apply surprisingly sheer on my skin. Worn separately or together they add just a whisper of sun-kissed color.
I like using Happy/Healthy on my cheeks to offset bolder makeup elsewhere on my face, but it works well by itself with simple dressed-down makeup looks, too.
Behold: the headband that always feels like it’s squeezing my brain!
The You Make Me Blush Duos are part of Philosophy’s new Supernatural makeup line. The folks at Philosophy filled the products with skin-tastic ingredients like vitamins, minerals and specialized antioxidants but left out potentially irritating chemicals like parabens, phthalates and sulfates. All I gotta say is WOOT
After spending this afternoon broiling in The Beast (slang for the East Bay Area), where I was running errands, I returned home to this random act of awesomeness.
Someone left a life-size cut out of Muhammad Ali in our apartment complex laundry room!
See, this was why I liked living here … despite the killer heat and small size of our apartment. Where else could I have gotten a legendary athlete standing guard over my Old Navy tank tops? 🙂
But that wasn’t the extent of this afternoon’s awesomeness. I also met these new Chanel Jade polishes, YES!
Hawt, damn! I hope I dream about this green tonight…
T-minus two hours until the official start of the weekend (at least on this coast). It’s on like Donkey Kong! 🙂
What are you up to? I just finished my shower, and now I’m sitting down to watch Sin Nombre on DVD.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Hi Marisol,
Oh, let me know if it’s good! I’m itching to see it.
How was your Saturday?
Miss QQ says
Hi Karen. You look beautiful in that blush! The Chanel nail polishes are indeed to-die-for. You bought both of them? I can’t wait for them to be launched here and I have a feeling I will get both. 😉
Karen says
Hi Miss QQ,
Yup, both of ’em. The review and swatches will go up tomorrow!
How have you been? It feels like forever since I’ve talked to you.
Tavia a says
Hi Karen, I like the Philosophy duo but I would use only the pink shade, the other one is not really matching my skin tone and about the Jade collection :(((((
I love the green nail polish since I first saw it, after I saw how it looked on short nails and …what else can I say…It was love at first sight

Jen says
Oh my gosh, that green jade is to die for…
And the cardboard cutout made me laugh. That’s just too random. Love it!
Happy Friday!
Karen says
Hi Jen,
It was SO random! I live for weird shizz like that, LOL!

Hi Eru,
I hope you get it soon! You need it in your life. 😉
Have you moved yet?
Patti says
Waah I went to Sephora a couple of days ago to get my grubby little hands on the lit from within cream blush and they don’t have the Supernatural makeup line from Philosophy!!! They did have the foundations and concealers but no blushes…:-(
Btw, Karen how would you apply these blush duos? Do you mix them before applying or just apply one after the other?
Thanks hope you have a great weekend too!
Karen says
Hi Patti,
BOO! Have you tried Nordies? They usually carry Philosophy there.
For this blush, I like to apply it in few different of ways. Sometimes I use ’em separately, other times I mix ’em together. For this look I applied the brown shade first and then did just a touch of the pink on the apples. 🙂
How has your weekend been? I spent most of today unsuccessfully organizing my home office.
Tiffany says
You look so cute, Karen! Kinda like a “no makeup” look that looks very natural.
The polishes look so pretty! I love how green and pink look together. Happy Saturday!
Karen says
Hi Tiffany,
Thanks hon! 🙂 I am feeling the non-makeup looks lately. How ’bout you?
Hope you had a nice Saturday. Did you do anything fun?
Christina says
Sounds like you had a fantastic Friday, Karen! And I have to say… I’d be more motivated to do laundry if I knew I could meet [cardboard] celebrities in the laundry room. 😉 So fun!

Hi Christina,
Don’t you love random stuff like that? It totally makes my day.
How’s your weekend going? Hope you’re having a good one!
Suzana says
Hi Karen! I’ve just found your blog, and I loved it. Very nice. Almost every day I take a look here…hehehe. I’m from Brazil…And brazilians are so amazing/crazy about cosmetics and makeup! Nice to “meet” you.
Hugs!

Karen says
Hi Suzana,
Hello from San Francisco! Brazilian women are so beautiful. What’s your secret?
Rae says
Yay, Simon Baker!! The blush duo looks gorgeous, but it just doesn’t hold a candle 😛
And you just *have* to laugh at that random cutout. That’s hilarious ^^

Karen says
Hi Rae,
Totally! If somebody removes it I’m gonna be very annoyed. It really is awesomeness personified.
Michelle says
LOVE that hottie from the Mentalist. And the blushes are gorg. Are they matte or shimmer? My skin gets so shiny, I can only wear matte blushes (or the shimmer sinks in more pores — ugggh!)
Karen says
Hi Michelle,
Matte! They look so natural — seriously, I think you’ll love ’em.
Did you know that the lead detective lady from The Mentalist was in The Craft?
Solé says
That blush looks so pretty on you! I know it’s a blue pink in the pan, but it looks so peachy on you, like the color of the top you’re wearing in the picture. That jade polish is gorgeous too! I love how you can catch a glimpse of the shimmer from that angle. I hope you swatch it and show us how it looks on your nails. 🙂 Oh, and let us know what you think of that movie. It’s on my Netflix queue, but my queue moves so slowly when I forget to send movies back for days. :-/
Karen says
Hi Sole,
I’ll have swatches up tomorrow. 🙂 The green looks like jadite on my nails… oh, it’s love!
Glosslizard says
It’s truly gorgeous! It’s pretty close to MAC’s Peppermint Patti, although Jade is a little greener and has this amazing luminous quality. If I had to pick one, I’d pick Jade! It was a three-coater though, not the best application in the world, but not the worst either. I put it on too late to see, but I think it will really be at it’s best in the sunlight!
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
I ended up with did three coats too. I love how it looks exactly like my favorite jadite bowl. 🙂
Did you get Jade Rose? It’s such a nice surprise!
amy says
I am dying to get Chanel Jade Green nailpolish but it is not being released in Canada. I will have to find an E-retailer that ships to Canada. I also really like the look of a bare face with super pink rosy cheeks with just a lightly stained lip.

Hi Amy,
I like that look too. I’d also add mascara! I feel naked without it.
Marisol says
My Saturday was great! I spent it in the glorious sun for most of the day. I did go to E & O trading for lunch and had a delish meal. Spent time with some friends in the North Bay and caught a late showing of September Issue. if you like Vogue & the fashion industry, I recommend it. I liked it a lot. The fashion & make up…. oh my!
.-= Marisol’s last blog post… Stepping Out Of My Comfort Zone =-.
Karen says
Hi Marisol,
Didja go to the E & O in Larkspur? I still haven’t been yet.
There’s also a Melting Pot in that area… I want to go there too!
Okay, it looks like I’m gonna have to drag the boy to watch The September Issue.
Ashley says
Oh my.. those have got to be the most beautiful looking nail polishes ever!!! Must get, must buy, must have!
Karen says
Hi Ashley,
You can get ’em online or at Chanel boutiques. LOVE THEM!
Marisol says
Yeah, the one in Larkspur. It was really good. We had the corn fritters & shrimp cakes for apps, my mom had some fish dish & I had a steak sandwich w/ taro chips. So good!
The Melting Pot is awesome! More than a meal… it’s an experience. Seeing the movie gave me a better appreciation of the magazine.

I know it’s a little bit late to post here but I wanted to say that you look lovely and that your complexion looks flawless in that picture. Two questions: can the brown shade of the duo be used as a contour or is it too sheer? and could you please tell us what other products are you using on your face? as I said you look lovely and I’d like to recreate the look… Now I wonder what I was doing on 19th that I missed this post
