Bumble and Bumble enlisted the help of French hairdresser Laurent Philippon to test and fine tune the formula of their Spray de Mode hairspray over several seasons of professional use backstage at the Paris shows (aka in the trenches), and the hard work shows.
Let me just come out and say it: Spray de Mode is nothing like 1980’s hairsprays. I can’t even begin to estimate the obscene amount of stinky, flaky, crunchy aerosol hairspray I used when high hair was the fashion du jour.
Notice the side wings… I look like I’m ready to take flight, like a glorious pegasus!
Backstage at Paris Fashion Week, the pressure on stylists to create, shape and sometimes change crazy hairstyles in seconds is intense. As Philippon and crew tested different formulations, the folks at Bumble and Bumble took note. Stylists were setting down their cans of better known hairsprays and reaching for the Spray de Mode prototypes.
Hair held in place with Spray de Mode still feels natural and flexible, not crunchy. Spray de Mode provides a firm hold able to create complicated hair styles without flaking or cracking.
I’ve been wearing my hair big and wavy lately as a homage to my 80s pre-teen self. Spray de Mode’s worked wonders in keeping the waves in check without leaving my hair feeling sticky or crunchy. I can even run my fingers through my mane, and it keeps its shape. And Spray de Mode dries quickly. I remember 80s hairspray taking forever to dry.
Spray de Mode does have a slightly “aerosol hairspray” scent, but it’s very light — not overwhelming like the smell of Aqua Net back in the day.
Now that high-waisted pants and leggings are back in style, it’s only a matter of time before big hair strikes again. With Spray de Mode, I’ll be ready when it happens!
Bumble and Bumble plans to release Spray de Mode ($25 for a 10 oz bottle) on March 15, and the spray will be a permanent member of the Bumble and Bumble lineup.
Happy Sunday, my friends! This morning I slept in a bit, did some cleaning (my desk is a mess), and ate a hearty breakfast of two frozen Eggo waffles. Seriously, if Eggo waffles ceased to exist my body would go into shock. I have a few errands to run this afternoon before heading to the gym to lift weights. It’s a chest and shoulders day, which means bench press, FUN!

LOL, I had a houndstooth jacket too, only in red!
I will really love it if this hairspray doesn’t have the signature B&B scent to the usual level. I tried one of their sprays once before and the smell was too strong and lingered all day long! I had to return it!
I went out this morning and procured a pot of Shiseido eyeshadow in lemon sugar! So pretty! It’s a wonderful, sheer, pale gold that works really well for those who find that too much brass or yellow in a gold tone will sallow their faces and look off (i.e. me)! Loving it!!
Amanda says
OMGosh Karen, that photo is like, totally, awesome.
I love B&B hair stuff-so will this spray be permanent? I’m currently using the B&B spray in the pink bottle–don’t need any more yet, but this one sounds nice.
Dao says
Karen, you’ve been hip all your life! In the 80s I was a kid (think 1st grader!) and really wanted to have a permed fringe/bang because other kids had them. My mom, god bless her, allowed me to have the it bang of the 80s. So I sat under a hood with a roll over my forehead while inhaling the perm solution (which smelled really really bad!) After 1/2 hr or so, the hair stylist took the roll out, shook her head, put it back in and made me sit for another 1/2 hr. It went on and on for some couple of times before she gave up and washed my hair. The end result was nowhere like yours, my hair was so straight it didn’t take the perm!
For the non-stickiness, Keratase and Dove hair sprays have the same formula too. I guess those are designed for those who want the Amy Winehouse look with all the teasing and back-combing.
PeeChee says
OMG…I think I need to take a look back at our yearbooks somewhere in my parents house. Good Times!!! I remember all the girls in the bathroom at school spraying their hair. You’d have to hold your breath when you walked in. I’ll have to look into getting the Bumble and Bumble hairspray as I’m almost out of my pureology one.
I was in SF yesterday for a kid’s bday party at Pier 39. The weather was nice…except it started to get windy in the evening. I thought about your parking haven in one of your posts awhile back…but since I was with the kids and my mammoth truck I parked at the garage. 🙂
Karen says
Hi Apple Diva,
LOL, you know I’m all about educating future generations! Dang those wings better not come back in style!
Karen says
Hi Mrs. Lynne!
There are lots of bad pictures from that time (those were some rough years), and they’re all at my parent’s house! That was the only one I had with the adequate hair height.
The 80s were rrrrrough! But I’m sure your pictures are way cuter!
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
Hmmm, to make matters worse I believe that the jacket had a matching skirt. There was a whole lotta houndstooth when I wore that outfit.
OH, yay! I went to the mall today to visit with the Shiseido pots and got a little distracted by the perfume section, oops! I’m going back later on this week (cause that’s what I do) though, so I’ll pick up a pot or two or four then. What do you plan on pairing lemon sugar with?
BTW, the striped beast stopped by today and right now is sitting on my lap as I’m typing this out!
Karen says
Thanks Amanda! LOL, I do believe the piano recital trophy takes it to the next level. 😉
I dunno if it’s permanent; I think it is. Lemme do some investigating…
Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net says
Maybe my baby pictures since I’m an ’81 kid but definitely not cute in the late 80’s. I had them dork’r’us glasses that were like half my face – agh!!!! LOL.
And I couldn’t pull off the too cool for school smile b/c my lips are actually crooked in straight view, hah. Which is why my lip swatches are always taken from the side 😉 Yeehaw! Lol.
What’s the trophy from?

Hi Dao,
Awww, your mom was so cool to let you get a perm. You are probably lucky that it didn’t take because to tell you truth, having wavy/curly hair is a pain in the arse. Did you manage at least to get your bangs big? That was key!!!!
Karen says
Hi PeeChee,
I have one yearbook from HS and a bunch for middle school with me for some weird reason. You had some good bangs back in the day. And I totally remember your styllin’ blue, black and white Nike jacket!
Ah, the Aqua Net haze in the bathroom! It got worse the closer you got to the mirror, LOL.
How fun! Where did you guys go for the party? Were your parents there? Tell them I said HI!
Glosslizard says
Hi Karen!
I wore mine with skin-tight black jeans, boots and a turtleneck! 😀
Yes, going back to the makeup counter is what I do too! I like to use golds either layered with pinks, or in a duo-tone with the gold from the inner corner toward the center of the eyelid and either teal or purple from the center outward. I know, it sounds really garish, but with a light hand and blended well it’s actually understated and (I think) rather elegant! Especially nice for summer!
I love working at my desk with a cat on my lap! It lowers the blood pressure too! =^..^=
Dao says
No, I was a kid when I got the perm so I didn’t know how to make a big bang. I think the hairstylist ended up giving me a bowl cut or something.
Karen says
OMG, Mrs. Lynne, if you were born in 81 then you’re my little brother’s age. AWWW!
That trophy was probably from one of the gazillion piano recitals I played in – I played for waaaaay to long and mostly against my will. You know how it is, right? When you go to a pinoy family party there’s always a piano in the house, and there’s that one cousin who gets the unfortunate role of being the “piano playing cousin”? Yep, that was me. Oh the torture!
tania says
Ah I was still a littlin’ but in the early 90s I was in junior high. Man oh man I probably have breathed in so much hairspray my lungs are stuck. Sunday for me equals church from 8am until about 11:30. Two services and sunday school. After that I flopped on the couch and watched black snake moan. Then one long nap followed by more laziness which incorporated a phone call to dominos and some jude law. Oh by the way I saw your man christian bale in 3:10 to Yuma. Man that was indeed a hottie flick!
Lilan says
If only I could find pictures of myself from 8th grade, too! Although I don’t know if I’d be as brave as you are to post them up 😉 I had the crazy spiral perm too, but my hair was not nearly as long as yours! You still look good, girl!

So I had the luck that although I was born in 1980…and ostensibly could have missed the big hair trend altogether…I was blessed with a sister 6 years older than me…who was always responsible for my hair on picture day. I also had naturally curly hair – my sister’s is merely wavy – so I did not need the perm, whereas she did. Let me just say that there are pictures of me that look like I have a 15 year old’s big hair on my 9 year old body. LOL…
I am excited about the hairspray because I use hairspray every day. I have a small forehead…so no bangs for me anymore… and I usually get irritated if my hair gets in my eyes during the day…so Hairspray is a must. I currently use Paul Mitchll, but I was thinking I only have another month or so until I need more…so I’ll have to check out the B&B.
Karen says
Hi Amanda,
I just found out that it’s a permanent edition to the B&B line! Yay!
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
Ah yes, turtlenecks… saving women from future neck issues since their inception!
The teal/gold and teal/purple sounds really pretty, and not garish at all. I will try that today. I am wearing gold today in the form of Cash Flow Paint Pot. I was in a hurry to get out of the house so I just did a layer over the entire lid and two coats of Elizabeth Arden Ceramide mascara. It’s a lazy makeup day.
Honestly, I wish the beast would just adopt me already. He toys with my heart when he leaves. *tears*
Karen says
Aww, Dao! Well, when the big bang comes back (because sadly, I suspect it will) then you’ll be able to get your chance, then.
I had a bowl cut circa 1981. I think it’s a right of passage.
Karen says
Hi Tania,
Oh fun! I used to sing in the church choir and play flute back in the day.
3:10 to Yuma is a fab movie. What Jude Law movie did you watch? I have a theory he’s the new Hugh Grant (one trick romantic lead pony).
Karen says
LOL, Lilan! Who didn’t have a spiral perm? There was a excess of mousse and gel use too, if I can recall!
Karen says
Hi Megan,
Ahh, you were one of those girls with the awesome hair that everybody else wanted! You were so lucky to have an older sister to hook you up.
If you need touchable hold this hairspray is great. I put a bunch on today before I left for work and my hair’s so far stayed put (it’s big today… I’ve been to lazy to fight it!).
Lilan says
I could never get gel to work properly in my hair – it always came out to goopy, mess. Mousse on the other hand was really fun to play with. Fluffy white foam that turns your hair crunchy always amazed me!
Hope you’re having a good Monday!

thanks Karen! as I said I don’t need any hairspray right now, but think this may be my next bottle when the classic (that’s what I’m using now, in the bright pink bottle!) runs out.
Karen says
Hi Lilan,
Yeah, gel is tricky. I didn’t actually figure that one out until two years ago.
I haven’t used hair mousse in years! I don’t miss the crunchiness at all, LOL. WORK THAT SPIRAL PERM GIRLFRIEND!
Karen says
You’re welcome Amanda 🙂 Hope you’re having a good Monday!
Lilan says
You’ve figured out gel?? Share the love, Karen! I still don’t know what to do with it.
My hair stylist told me to use a little bit of mousse in my hair with a diffuser. Apparently my hair is a little wavy?? I always thought it was straight. Maybe one of those permanents became permanent?? 😉

omg, karen, you brought back memories of the 80s. I personally was still a young’un during the 80s, but i remember the styles my older bro and his friends (guys and girls) had. my older bro rocked the mullet. HAHA, i have some of those pictures too, the rest my mom has. imagine that, i post up embarrassing pics of my bro. LOL. i remember i wanted to be like his girl friends and have the big hair and everything, the cool 80s style clothing, but my mom wouldn’t have it. i wasn’t even 10 yrs old yet by the end of the 80s. and the piano playing cousin, that was me in my family. so I feel ya on the forced feeling of having to play.

Sure, thing Lilan! I’ll do a demo one of these days…
You know, I’ve known several women who didn’t know that their hair had waves. You can totally work it with a diffuser and the right product. Embrace those waves!
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
I know, I know. I totally enable him, too, so he’s not the only one to blame. 🙂 The funny thing is now El Hub’s fallen in love with him too. The beast has two humans that fawn over him when he comes around!
Karen says
Hi Jaclyn Rose,
Trust me… that hair was a lot of work. You are lucky to have missed the era. Funny thing about your brother’s mullet: all the boys I had crushes on during that era had 1) a mullet 2.) tight pants (often acid washed) and 3.) nike windbreakers. You should totally post up pics of him! I bet he’d get a kick out of it.
So you were the piano playing cousin too huh? I bet if we were in the same family they’d make us do a duet or something equally as excruciating. How long did you play for? Do you still play?
Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net says
Oh I hear ya girl. I took piano lessons for 10 or 12 years (does it matter? that’s long either way, lol) and 95% was against my will. I even told my mom that she was just wasting her money sending me but guess who still had to go. I wouldn’t even practice until the day of my lessons, lol.
I even had to play for church. So I would play the piano and sing with a friend of mine at the same time. Looking back at it, I wonder what everyone was thinking b/c no way in hell do I have good sounding voice, lol.
And I can’t believe you actually got trophies! I have a binder full of recital and audition award papers but no a trophy. Guess I was going to the cheap stuff, hah.
Do you still play now? Or should I say, do you have a piano at your place?
Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net’s last blog post..MAC Product Releases: Strobe 2008
Jaclyn says
I actually took lessons from 5 years old to 10 years old. I remember when I was 7 or 8 years old, a friend from school and I did a duet in our school’s talent show. I played the piano and she sang, the song was Tomorrow. I don’t know what happened to me, we practiced for weeks on it and I still somehow managed to screw it up. I felt so bad, made me want to quit playing even more, but no, my mom said to keep playing.
I don’t really play anymore, I do have a Casio keyboard that my older bro gave me when I was in high school and every now and then I’ll jam on it, but I’m not as good as I used to be. HAHA one of the only songs I know by heart is the infamous “Fur Elise”

Karen –
Great Blog!!
I will start looking for the bumble and bumble spray ASAP.
I also had 80’s hair that was a few stories high and wide.
I was a big fan of the aqua net pump non-aresol spray because it was cheap. But the real reason I bought it was that for just $1.99, u could dump the crappy hair spray out & rinse the bottle in the dishwasher, then refill it with vodka & take it to the high school dances – the teachers wouldn’t have a clue. Of course the vodka still tasted a bit like hair spray! Still – it was the 80’s and we were desperate to spice up the school dances. Kids do not try this at home!
On a fashion note – I was a Madonna wannabe -that went over really well with the nuns at my school!
Karen one more thing – u stopped by my blog and I’m really glad u liked it, but I’m curious, how’d u find about it?

Karen, you look so cute!
I love your blog and it’s one of my favorite stops to visit during the week (stay home with my two kids ages 1 and 4).
Karen says
Hi Lynne,
I told my mom the SAME THING! And I can’t even count the times where I didn’t practice until the day of my lesson. My teacher was hella scary, too! She wasn’t exactly warm and fuzzy. She was pinay and had a thick accent, along with one eye that would squint at me angrily all the time.
Like you, I played for church, too, ha ha! I played flute, too.
Yeah, we got trophies, but the parents had to chip in to pay for them. I hated going to recitals. I found them terrifying and incredibly BORING! Sadly, I don’t really play now. The piano’s at my parent’s house and the only time I bother playing it is when I’m by myself. I still hate having an audience.
Do you think you’ll have the boys play when they’re old enough?
Karen says
Hi Jaclyn,
Oh, I have a few stories like that too. I remember going to one recital and completely blanking out because of stage fright. It was terrible!
That’s so sweet that your brother gave you a keyboard. Funny, I learned how to play “Fur Elise” too, and it was the top requested song at the pinoy weekend family gatherings!
Karen says
Hi Kelly,
I found it while link surfing. It’s great, keep up the good work!
Your hair from the 80s sounds envious! I so wanted to be Madonna, too, but I was like, 8.
Hope you’re having a good weekend!
Karen says
Hi Anna W,
Thank you, hun! It’s great to meet you. Your babies are so lucky to have you at home. I hope someday to be a stay at home mom, too. 🙂
Are you a makeup fan? Or are you new to cosmetics?
Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net says
As much as I didn’t like going to lessons, I have a soft heart for music with piano in it. Odd, huh? Have you ever heard of Something Corporate? It’s this rock band whose lead singer plays the piano. Hubbo and I went to their concert at the Fillmore and it was THE BEST concert I have ever been too. And something about the piano just gives it a nice add to guitars and drums. I’m a sucker for the rockers 😉
As for the boys, I won’t sick ’em with the piano playing unless they want to. I’d love it if they’d get up on guitar, drums, or ukelele though but I’mma let them make the call. But I would like them to have some sort of musical inspiration and part of me thinks they already will since we both play something and Hubbo is a huge fan of music. He really cannot function without it.
