Well get my plaid shirt, hoop earrings and clunky Timberland boots, because the second I slipped on the new NARS 413 Bleecker Street Pure Matte Lipstick ($25), I felt like I’d just stepped out of a hot tub time machine set for 1995.
It was the Clueless decade, when Alicia Silverstone, Sugar Ray and little black backpacks were En Vogue (just like the group!). Colors like this matte rosy brown were all the rage. I remember wearing a similar shade to countless (boring) college lectures on organic chemistry and physics.
This new NARS shade (I’m trying to find out if it’s permanent or limited edition) was created exclusively for the recent opening of the company’s first flagship store in the West Village at 413 Bleecker Street in New York City, and, at least for now, the store is the only place you can get it.
But if you’re nowhere near the Big Apple, you can still get your paws on a tube without having to haul your cookies to NYC. One of the store’s makeup artists (Hey, Marco!) tells me they can take credit card orders over the phone. U.S. shipping will set you back $8 and takes between 5-7 business days. The store also ships internationally, but those fees will vary. Marco suggests stocking up on other products while you’re at it, you know, to get more bang out of the cost of shipping.
If you’re interested, the number to call is (646) 459-2323.
A few more fabulous NARS goodies to consider…
413 Bleecker joins the NARS Pure Mattes lipstick family, a relatively new line which launched last summer. Like the other colors I’ve tried, it feels soft and smooth on my lips, and I think it looks fantastic in pics.
Here I’m wearing it with the NARS Kalahari Eyeshadow Duo and NARS Sex Appeal Blush.
I bet it would also rock the socks off of looks with smokey brown or gray eyes — or maybe even a clean, nude eye with black liquid liner and lots of mascara.
Since it’s a brown lippie, pairing it with brown blush could lead to brown overload, so consider adding a pop of something bright like pink on the cheeks to liven it up. NARS Mata Hari (a rose petal pink) or Desire (a cotton candy pink) should look really cute!
PRICE: $25
AVAILABILITY: Available now at the NARS Boutique on 413 Bleecker Street in New York City, or by phone to (646) 459-2323.
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: A
SPRING. WANT. NOW.
Last night reader Amber and I were chatting in the comments about dresses, and she recommended a designer called Suzi Chin for Maggie Boutique (available at Nordstrom stores). I checked out some of their clothes online last night, and gurl, I’m in . Super cute and relatively affordable. I’ve got my eye on these two numbers for spring…
Ruched Stretch Satin Dress, $158
Boutique Lace Shift Dress, $159
I really like the second one…but I’m afraid I’ll look like a walking tablecloth with it on, haha!
Jeez, the weather needs to hurry up and get warm already so we can bust out our dresses. I can’t wait! 🙂
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
Tiffany says
this looks nice on you, but I don’t look good in brown shades…
LOVE that first dress! I can’t wait for Spring!!!

I drove five and a half hours week before last (well…my pops drove me; but I braved the subway and got lost in the village for an hour before finding the store) to nyc for the EXPRESS PURPOSE of visiting the NARS flagship store and getting this lipstick (Yeah…I might be more than a little bit addicted to NARS….), only to find that the store was closed for the day; they were filming a commercial inside. Though it was pretty cool watching them film, I was mega bummed. So disappointing. Thanks so much for the scoop on phone-in orders! Though it would’ve been cooler to get it from the store, sometimes ya just gotta compromise. 😉
Mandy says
Oh my gosh!!! THAT’S called dedication.
Sorry to hear you didn’t get it because of the commercial being filmed, that had to be totally unexpected!
kalcedon says
This shade looks amazing on you!
Btw, I WANT the lace shift dress. NOW. :). (wishful thinking…)
Rachael says
I have that same phone case but mine is black with white polka dots! I love it!
JJ says
Pretty pretty lipstick. It reminds me of Clinique Pink Chocolate.
Cassie says
Oh mah gad, Clueless rocks! I went through a phase last term and watched quite a few 80s and 90s movies…what a different world compared to today.
That Nars lipstick would totally have suited then and it looks lovely. Not very exciting, but pretty in a muted way.
Vijaya says
I feel like I need this color. Do you know if NARS is cruelty free?
Karen says
According to their Customer Service page it is.
Lucie says
Ehh, actually, NARS is owned by Shiseido which does test on animals…as for their claim that they do not, I believe it’s a case of them not conducting the testing THEMSELVES but having other companies do it for them. It’s misleading and awful, but happens more than you’d like to think.
NARS does not have, nor has sought, an official cruelty-free statement. And companies that are genuinely cruelty free like to shout it from the top of the hills if they have one; i.e. Urban Decay and Smashbox. It’s a bummer. :/
Marie says
Just because NARS is owned by Shiseido doesn’t mean they test on animals. And a cruelty-free statement is not an obligation.
Basically you base your argumentation on your personal beliefs and not on facts and statements.
Maggie says
Just an FYI that their site has an updated FAQ regarding animal testing:
https://www.narscosmetics.com/customer-care
DOES NARS TEST ON ANIMALS?
NARS does not test on animals, nor do we have any other parties, such as suppliers, conduct any animal testing on our behalf. NARS uses only the highest quality ingredients which have a proven safety record and are widely used in the cosmetics industry.
DO NARS PRODUCTS CONTAIN ANY ANIMAL PRODUCTS?
We are continually evaluating alternatives to animal-derived ingredients and have replaced many ingredients with vegetable derived substitutes. However, certain NARS products may contain animal derivatives, such as lanolin. If you would like further information as to which NARS products contain animal derivatives please contact customer care and we will provide that information.

Thanks for the post! I thought the color reminded me of 90210, sunflower print dresses and cropped sleeveless denim vests. Those were the days 😉
Karen says
I used to rock my sunflower print dresses with the clip in the back. 😉 Did you have one of those too?
Oh, and don’t forget the Doc Martins…
Casey says
I had more than one! I hate to admit it. And yes, I owned a pair of the Mary Jane style docs. They were maroon, and I thought they were hot!
Nina says
i have a blue dress from ann taylor loft thats pretty similar to that white one — flutter sleeves and all. 🙂 its a great spring/summer dress. i can dress it up w/ pearls or go casual w/ silver accessories!
that nars lipstick — reminds me of a colorstay shade that was a big hit when colorstay first came out. i remember swiping it from my sister to use it for school! i got caught, of course!
Amber says
Ha, remember when Spice pencil was like the #1 MAC must-have?
If you like that price point on the dresses, check out Donna Ricco, too (also at Nordstrom)! One of my all-time favorites dresses is by that label but I need assistance getting in and out of it or I look like I’m doing the Elaine Benes dance.
Tracy says
Sigh, I want Spring now too. But it’s supposed to snow here this week. Again.
You look great in that NARS Lippie and my favourite plaid shirt! 🙂
Elle says
I love the dresses – I think you could pull it off Karen 🙂 Love the lippie on you too! I’m not a fan of matte lipsticks (I’m afraid they dry my lips) but this looks great on you.
Chris25 says
Hehehe, you guys are going to be jealous…I live in the same neighborhood of the new store!
Makeup Morsels says
ohh I definitely love that Boutique Lace Shift Dress! I’m tempted to try out these NARS lippies, this one looks like a nice, everyday shade.
Instant Karma (formerly L) says
The lipstick looks nice on you, and those two dresses are fab! I just ordered three dresses from ideeli yesterday, lol. They were on a killer sale, though: it all added up to less than $135. I have no remorse. 😀
However, why must you knock the physics? Don’t you know I love it so? It’s fun! On the other hand, orgo is just awful. I minored in chemistry, and even I despised that stuff.
gio says
That shade looks very pretty on you! 🙂
Fieran says
This is a beautiful colour – despite being a brown lipstick. I am so going to consider calling them up to ask about international shipping costs one of these days. NARS is making way too many nice products lately and it’s getting difficult to resist their new stuff 🙂
Karen B says
Looks awesome. Also I still adore your Kate Spade iPhone case 🙂 Has it become less slippery/easier to hold?
Kim says
That lipstick looks fabulous on you! And I hear you on the Spring front. Both those dresses are super-cute but, now that you mention it, I can see how #2 might look a little like a doily. In fairness, I didn’t think about that at first but, you know the power of suggestion. 🙂
Lauren says
Rosy browns are my jam (reference point: la la land by benefit and velvet teddy by MAC), I have to check this out! Thanks for the review!
Wendy says
Looks like a good go to shade.
Oh Karen I can always count on you for a good throw back to the trends of the nineties, to this day when I choose the valet service I remember Cher jajajajaja.
And I still have a crush on Paul Rudd.
Melissa says
I’m going to the NARS boutique tomorrow to pick up Russian Doll lipstick, but I’ll be sure to have a look out for this one!
lisa says
That color looks great on you and I love your reviews!!! I was searching for the new lipstick version and came across this review and of course now want it! Thank for all your work! Love your site and tell my friends about it 🙂
