This afternoon I tried to come up a clever rhyme befitting the NARS Hula Hula Eyeshadow Duo ($32), but the closest I came were “Spend that moolah on Nars Hula Hula” and “I start to drool-a when I see Nars Hula Hula.”
FYI: Not many words rhyme with hula. 🙂
My rhymes may not weave a sonnet, but this shimmery eyeshadow duo feels like poetry on my eyes.
One of two eyeshadow duos in the Nars spring 2009 collection, Hula Hula comes with two cool-toned eyeshadows, the first in shimmery strawberry pink and the other in gold.
Swatch of Hula Hula without flash
To all my glitter girls, take note. Both colors in the duo have bangin’ flakes of glitter — huge chunks like the glitter in Nars’ Super Orgasm Blush, BAM!
I usually equate big glitter with drag show makeup (which has its time and place, I might add), but for some reason it works for me in Hula Hula, I’m guessing because both the colors apply semi-sheer. The finish reminds me of the sheer MAC Beauty Powder blushes. The glitter adds a touch of glam that just stops short of gaudy.
With flash
I think if either of the shadows in this duo applied with the rich, shimmery pigmentation of something like a Shu Uemura eyeshadow or MAC Pigment, then the glitter in them would have taken these shadows on a three-hour tour to tranny-ville. Instead, they hit the glitter nail on the head.
Nars Hula Hula Eyeshadow Duo
Price: $32
Use: A semi-sheer eyeshadow duo with honkin’ big chunks of glitter that work!
Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A
For a super easy spring look, I like to wear this duo sticking to just one of the colors at a time, like with a simple wash of the strawberry pink (or the gold) over the entire lid and wearing it with curled lashes and LOTS of mascara.
Got any workout music suggestions for me?
Hey, ladies! How was your Thursday? It seems like this week went by in a flash, didn’t it?
I may squeeze in a quick workout now that I’m finished with my reading for school… Do you ever use the stair stepper machine at the gym? Damn, that thing sure kicks my @ss. It burns mad calories, but it’s about as fun as getting a tooth pulled. I could really use some new music to kill the pain. Got any suggestions?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Hey Karen!!! I just bought this duo last weekend and I LOVE IT. The glittery chunks scared me, but it’s interesting, they just sort of blend out as you apply the shadow. It’s such a wonderful duo. The NARS MA applied it on me with bronzer and Shrinigar lipstick, which is also from the Spring collection. It looked GORGEOUS!
ParisB says
Looks like sheer shimmer is in for Spring 2009 what with Nars and Dior going that way and YSL too from what I see. Still that gold is pretty and I’d like to see you do a look coz I can never wear pink on my eye without looking like I’ve been crying for a month.

Karen–
Oo, music! I can help you there (ahem, self-confessed music addict). I’ll try to put the music genres down so you can personalize it to your tastes but so many artists can fit under different genres and I don’t know every genre, obviously.
The List of Exercise Music to Try (genre/artist/album):
1.*pop* Madonna–Hard Candy (tracks- 1. Candy Store & 2. 4 Minutes) Yes, I like Madonna though I prefer her newer stuff.
2.*electronica/rock/pop* Kerli–Love is Dead (every track excluding 6 and 12 as they are slow)
***Note: This is my obsession currently. I’ve been listening to the album since December and I haven’t grown tired of this CD yet. It’s new every time I listen to it. My favorite tracks happen to be Walking on Air, The Creationist, I Want Nothing, Beautiful Day, Creepshow, Hurt Me and Strange Boy. In other words, nearly the entire CD.
3. *pop* Madonna–Confessions on a Dance Floor
4. *hard rock/metal* Lacuna Coil–Karmacode
5. *pop/rock* Sara Bareilles–Little Voice
6. *pop/r&b* Christina Aguilera–Stripped
7. *pop/r&b* Christina Aguilera–Back to Basics
8. *pop/r&b* Rihanna–Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded
9. *pop/r&b* Fergie–The Dutchess
10. *latin/dance* Shakira–Laundry Service
11. *metal/rock* Linkin Park–Meteora
12. *pop* Kelly Clarkson–My December
13. *pop* Kelly Clarkson–Breakaway
14. *rock/metal* Evanescence–The Open Door
15. *rock/metal* Evanescence–Fallen
16. *soundtrack* Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl (I’m weird, I know. I see it as good exercise music)
17. *pop* Natasha Bedingfield–Unwritten
18. *pop* Natasha Bedingfield–N.B.
19. *pop* Natasha Bedingdield–Pocketful of Sunshine (it has a lot of the same tracks as N.B. but I love Pocketful of Sunshine, Happy, Piece of Your Heart, Angel, and Freckles)
20. *soundtrack* Rent
21. *rock* Rush–Snakes & Arrows
22. *pop/rock* Michelle Branch–The Spirit Room
23. *foreign/r&b/dance/pop* Trombo Combo–Swedish Sound Deluxe
24. *r&b/pop* Gwen Stefani–The Sweet Escape
25. *soundtrack/metal* Underworld: Evolution
26. *r&b/pop* Jewel–0304
If that list doesn’t keep you occupied, let me know and I’ll dig around for you! By the way, if you like doing yoga, a great album is Karl Jenkin’s Adiemus: Songs of Sanctuary. I become so relaxed with this CD and it just travels me to another time, world and place. If any sound interesting, let me know and I’ll see if I can’t find you a music video/song is on Youtube for you!!!

I’m in love with the playlist from 92.7 Energy’s DJs, so I usually download that kind of stuff =)
Some suggestions:
Shakira and Beyonce: Beautiful Liar
Lady Gaga: Poker Face (Joden de Brodie Remix)
Britney Spears: Remixes from the Circus Album
Since you work out after class, do you work out with your makeup on or do you remove prior to getting on the stepping machine? Just curious =)
Did you see ABDC tonight? It makes me sad that the cloggers got eliminated =( But I guess the show must go on! 😉 And!! I finally got some stuff from the Hello Kitty collection, I ended up with the Makeup Bag, Brush Set (the last of FIVE at the Union St. store), and Cute-Ster lipstick. The blushes didn’t show up as well on me as I was hoping they would… I really liked Fun and Games =( Do you know of any blushes that are similar to it?
Oddly, I got attracted to the High Tea lipstick today (from the permanent collection) and I was wondering if you remember Quiet, Please from the Red She Said collection. Do you think they’re too similar?
Hope you’re staying dry and warm! =)

PS-Clinique’s Mild Clarifying Lotion has been working great for me since you recommended it to me! Hubby even noticed how much smoother my skin looked 😉

Hi Karen. This duo is very pretty. Too bad I cannot see it in person because there is no NARS here. Maybe you can do a FOTD with it?
Nessa says
Love the duo. You should def do a FOTD with it!
I know what you mean about that stair-stepper. I won’t go near it, but my bf has to do it every time we go to the gym b/c he is training to be a firefighter. One of the things he has to do w/in a year of being hired is do 55 steps per minute for 7 minutes with an extra 50 lbs on him! Then he’s got to run around an ‘obstacle course.’ I.e. dragging a 180 lb dummy, going up an down ladders, crawling around, blind, in a tunnel with blockages, etc. He says he hates that thing more than anything in the world! So good luck. I know that he tries to watch TV while he’s on it, but he also listens to Kanye’s new CD for inspiration. He listens to Love Lockdown at least once a day. Wierdo, but *i luv him*

As for music, our dance class is using Timbaland’s Bounce and it’s so much fun!

uggh stair stepper – makes me lightheaded – i find that he more bass and aggression in the music makes me feel amped up heres a few from my “riding on the train/gym” playlist ( i need music to amp me up in the am commute lol)
miss independant – neyo • paper planes- MIA, a milli • lil wayne, arab money – busta rhymes • lipgloss – lil mama • let it bump – missy elliot ( hot track!!!) • money maker – ludacris • get back- ludacris, ridin – chamillionaire • touch it- busta rhymes • ANYTHING LLCOOL J lol – oh the list goes on – but i find hip hop gets me going for stuff like stairsteppers and ellipticals. For running and high incline walking i find pop and dance music gets me going. every tuesday we have a live dj at my gym i noticed they also play a lot of hip hop music maybe it helps keep counts in the reps lol i dunno i will have to as the dj his logic behind that one
i am loving this duo i really love nars shadows i have a few of their duos and they make me smile every time – i got my hello kitty palettes – you were right i am loving the too dolly but lucky tom is really bad ass too ! oh to be in love LOL i am at work already i need to put my game face on before the day ends! happy friday all!

I want it!! Thats was the only spring thing from nars that made m drool.. im getting blonder and blonder with evry trip to hairdressers.. i guess my hairdresser wants me blonde so… ill deffinately get it!!
I dont work out but if i do.. i really like to take the p*ss. I listen to Village people.. stuff like ‘macho man’ and ‘ymca’ for when i do weights.. and for cardio.. i listen to sad love songs so that i distract myself by trying to sing along to the lyrics!! And for me the distraction thing works.. of course i look like a lunatic in the meantime!!

Hi Shefali,
It’s good to hear from you! I hope that your test went well. 🙂
I will definitely have to try the look the NARS MA did on you. How did she apply the shadows? Did she use both colors?
Karen says
Hi ParisB.,
The pink is handled really well. I like that it isn’t overly frosty on the lids. I’ll do a FOTD soon!
Karen says
Hi Kate,
Thanks for all of these great suggestions. We have a lot of the same musical tastes!
I like Madge, too — been a fan of hers since the wee age of eight. I haven’t had the chance to listen to Hard Candy in its entirety so I’m gonna get on that!
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
The duo was a nice surprise. 🙂 I hope you check it out when you’re at the Nars counter!
Karen says
Hi Indian Girl,
I heart Missy, too. Her music always gets me moving!
Karen says
Hi Lesley,
I was bummed to see the cloggers get eliminated, too Right now I’m pulling for Beat Freaks. I want a group of girls to finally win!
When I work out I will usually take off eyeshadow, foundation, powder and blush. If I can I’ll leave on my under eye concealer, brows and mascara (if it’s waterproof). Those 360 mirrors in the gym kill me, LOL! If I don’t my brows filled in and a dab of concealer it’s not a pretty sight.
Regarding Quiet Please versus High Tea, High Tea has more peach in it. Here’s a quick swatch for you:
If you have warmer tones High Tea is a good color o have around!
Karen says
Hi Miss QQ,
I will! 🙂
Happy Friday!
Karen says
Hi Nessa,
Oh my gosh — that’s CRAZY. I can barely move on that thing. The minute it gets going I’m afraid I’m gonna fall off or have an asthma attack or a combo of both. But hey, it literally melts away calories! How long have you and your sweetie been together?
Karen says
Hi Karen B.,
OH! I don’t have that song! I will have to put that one on my iPod today. 🙂
Karen says
Hi Yadiq,
Your gym sounds like fun. I go to Gold’s and yeah… there’s no DJ. There’s a bunch of big beefy dudes and a TV that plays pre-set videos and for some reason Ashley Simpson songs are ALWAYS ON. I don’t get it.
I just *knew* Too Dolly would be your thing! Have you figured out a way to do the hot pink?
Karen says
Hi Tali,
They say that blondes have more fun… you’ll have to tell me if they do. 😉
And thanks for the recs. I don’t have any Village People up in the mix!
Karen says
Hi Tanya,
Ha! I like to pretend I’m at a club, too… though it’s kinda tough to do on a stair machine. Once I was listening to some music and I started really getting into it and I almost fell off, ha!
I haven’t heard of Christina’s Superwoman so I’ll check that out. 🙂
Karen says
Hi Lesley,
If you like Fun & Games blush but want something more pigmented, Sunbasque might be a good option. 🙂
Vanessa H says
My current faves are:
Never Let You Go by Third Eye Blind
Spice Girls Greatest Hits (don’t laugh!)
She Wants You by Billie
Hot Stuff by PCD
🙂

Karen,
Madonna for me has been on and off. There are some of her old songs that I like (Little Prayer) but I mainly go for her newer ones, especially the last two albums. The album Hard Candy isn’t as good as Confessions and I’ll admit that. I found that Confessions is a better all-around CD than her newer one.
Karen B says
My pleasure 🙂 Any of your favourites? I’m looking to expand my playlists too 🙂

My new obsession is Esser – you’ll love working out to “Headlock.”
Also, pretty much anything Lily Allen is great for workouts, but especially “Smile” (watch the video for that one – hilarious) and “LDN.”
Have a great weekend!
Ana.

Ooh I like that duo, very pretty! My husband’s a DJ and recently purchased two songs that makes me want to get my booty moving:
Right Round by Flo Rida
Just Dance by Lady GaGa & Colby O’Donis
Hope that helps!

hi karen,
i’m playing hookie today therefore an early day post from me – it’s been awhile! okay why was it cray-cray at the mac counter at 10:30 this morning? i thought i was mad for HK but these girls we not playin!! i only bought the kitty (for my daughter) and the beauty powder in tahitian sand. i’m happy with my purchases – the eye palettes are fun but i honestly don’t think i’d wear these bright colors often!
as far as the nars – I’m still thinking about this palette – you know how i feel about extra glittery makeup but you made a grate point of how pretty this would be for an easy makeup day – especially on sundays or it’s a tuesday morning and you only have 15mns to do your entire face!
