You know you grew up in earthquake country when you see some new nude lipsticks from Maybelline and, instead of thinking something normal like, “Ooh! I can’t wait to wear them with smoky eyes!” you think of your worst earthquake nightmare scenario, which involves being buck naked in the shower and completely covered in soap when the big one hits.
(Another one of my nightmare earthquake scenarios involves being in the middle of getting Lasik surgery when an earthquake hits. Sit on that one for a bit.)
Ah… Another day, another glorious excuse to wear nude lipstick. You know how I roll. 🙂 And these Color Sensational Inti-Matte Nudes Lipsticks by Maybelline are so much naked lip loveliness.
All of them have a warm, golden undertone, and their silky, creamy matte finish reminds me of Chanel… What doesn’t remind me of Chanel is their price. They’re only $7.99 each.
You have to be cool with a somewhat cloying buttercream frosting flavor and scent, which I’m totally OK with most of the time, but sometimes, like when I’m in that part of my cycle and my sense of smell goes into next-level basset hound gear, it makes me nauseous… It’s still not a deal-breaker for me, though, because I love the price, the wear time (I get about four hours), the lightweight formula and how they feel on my lips.
I’m all about Naked Coral (Haha, I can hear you saying, “Of course you are, Karen.” LOL!). It’s a warm pinkish coral that reads as “nude” on my medium tan skin.
OK, so…remember that Trader Joe’s Pecan Pie in a Jar?
Well, I made it last week for Christmas Eve dinner and, sadly, it was not all that.
Thank goodness there was a backup pie from Costco. 🙂 (Side note: Whose family always has a backup pie? Answer: My family does.)
I mean, the jar pie was incredibly easy to make. I just used one of those pre-made Pilsbury pie crusts, then poured the mix into a bowl, added butter and eggs, poured it all into the pie crust, and stuck it in the oven.
So it was easy, which was good, but it was just pure sweetness without a lot of flavor. I don’t think I’m gonna do it again… I think I’ll just head straight to Costco next year and get one of their bomb-@ss pecan pies, because I think their desserts are generally always good.
Big sigh… It’ll be a whole year before I have another slice of pecan pie. It’s just a holiday treat for me, and I’m OK with that.
What are some holiday desserts and snacks that you only eat this time of year?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. We’re gettin’ close! What are you doing for New Year’s Eve? I’m pretty sure I’ll be watching the ball drop with Tabs.

Mine are eggnog and Little Debbie Christmas tree cakes. So calorie heavy but so yummy.
BTW, I bought those Trader Joe’s Billionaire Shortbread truffles. So worth it! I also bought their strawberry champagne truffles. Did your store have those?
Karen says
I don’t think I saw any Strawberry Champagne Truffles. They sound delicious though! Happy New Year, Chris.
Karen says
Thank you so much for the swatches, Karen! I was eyeing these last night at Walgreens but didn’t pull the trigger. I’ll be going back today for Beige Babe! As for dessert, I can never get enough of pumpkin pie and frosted sugar cookies (Santa shaped of course!).
Karen says
You’re totally welcome, Karen! I hope that Beige Babe works out for you. It’s a really pretty color. All these lippies are really warm toned, by the way, so just keep that in mind (especially if warmer toned nudes go orange on you, which I know is the case for some people).
Ya know what? I don’t think I’ve had one slice of pumpkin pie at all this holiday season. I usually have a lil’ bit of pumpkin, a little bit of pecan… But I was all about the pecan this year.
Did you make/bake anything special for Christmas? I didn’t really didn’t make any desserts other than the TJ’s disaster pie. I’m kinda wishing I did though! Maybe next year.

Haha, I love how you tie things together, Karen (I remember reading about the first mention of pecan pie in a jar).
Those lipstick shades look hella nice, classic, and versatile! Also, the Lasik when the Big One Hits scenario is a doozy. Not even close, but once I was at the eye doctor getting my eyes dilated for a check up when the fire alarm sounded and we had to evacuate the building. During the worst, and least visible, part of the eye dilation I had to find my way out the door and stand outside in the bright sun. :-/
This time of year I eat my MIL’s Christmas cookies that she makes by the bucketfuls and sends from Austria. How they manage to get to Hawaii in one piece and still fresh tasting must be due to some MIL Christmas Cookie Magic.
Happy New Year, Karen and Family!
Karen says
Hey, Christine! Happy New Year to you and your family. The story about getting your eyes dilated and the fire alarm going off… Dude, that must’ve been scary! I hope you had a pair of those crazy temporary plastic terminator sunglasses at the very least. You know what freaks me out at the optometrist? That one test where you get a puff of air on your eyes. I always try to prepare myself for it mentally but it always scarea the crap out of me.
Anywho, tell me about these Christmas cookies from your MIL in Austria! Are they butter cookies? Chocolate chip? I love cookies but I can’t keep them in the house otherwise I’ll eat them all so I have to vicariously live through other people, LOL.
Christine says
The glaucoma test! Hated that! Apparently they no longer administer that puff of air. Some of my makeup clients liken getting their eyelashes getting curled in a curler to that puff of air test LOL.
oooohhhh, the Austrian Christmas cookeeeez… Besides the small heart/star/flower-shaped gingerbread cookies (plain and frosted), there are these tiny moon-shaped ones called “vanillakipferln.” *heart flutters* Then there are the chocolate dipped ones. And the ones with jelly drops. I’m actually glad we don’t live there because I’d be eating them by the platefuls. O_o

These were at Ulta today but they were only visible once I was already checking out! Boo! I picked up some leave-in hair stuff. Lipstick doesn’t like to stay on my lips, so I usually just give up anyway.
I don’t have any NYE plans right now. My friend Kelly invited me to accompany her to the house of another girlfriend for board games, so that might happen. I also bought some painting supplies at Michael’s, so I might get into that. And a friend of mine who moved to AZ is in town, so I won’t see him NYE, but in the following days I will.

Naked Coral is pretty! Too bad about the pie. I thought about getting it but then I saw it needed eggs so I had to pass. I miss pecan pie! I haven’t had any for 9 years!

GASP! Almond Rose is just…so gorgeous! Definitely will be on the hunt for these this week.

Costco pulls through every time! I love Kirkland brand everything, pretty much.
Is the formula for these similar to the existing Maybelle Creamy Mattes? Because those are my jam, and I have my eye on a whole bunch of these already!
Michele DiCola says
Hi Karen,
Gonna try the Brown Blush !
My New Year’s eve dinner is Pancit and bread and sausage !

Ghirardellis Peppermint Bark Chocolates; I love them sooo much! Also, my Mom’s sweet potato pie! It’s just has the perfect mixture of vanilla, butter, sweet potatoes and sugar…yum!

These all SCREAM my name 🙂

LOL, I have the same concerns about what state I’m in when the fire alarm goes off in my building! There’s nothing quite like standing around in a crowd of my neighbors in a state of totally-not-put-together, a raincoat or parka thrown on over a terrycloth robe, with nothing else underneath… Of course it’s usually freezing cold and/or pouring rain as well…
‘Nude’ is a whole category of lipsticks that make me look washed out/sick/dead 🙁 Such pretty colors — for other people! All of these are too warm for me, and half are too light. Plus, muted colors in general don’t do my complexion any favors, and most ‘nude’ colors are muted. The makeup colors officially recommended for job interviews, work, etc. seem designed to make me look my worst. So I just wear what makes me look good. Honestly, if someone thinks that bright pink, berry, or red lipstick is ‘inappropriate’ in this day and age, what exactly is their frame of reference? I’ll refrain from wearing grey, silver, blue, and green lipstick for job interviews, and probably choose berry over purple (unless interviewing in a creative field — purple does look great on me), but having to stay away from pink and red just seems ridiculous.
