First things first, my friend — happy National Lipstick Day! 🙂
(As if we needed another reason to love lipstick.)
Second, that mint green, though…
We live in extraordinary times. Not only can we roll up to a Sephora and buy a magnificent mint green lipstick like the one in the newly reformulated, repackaged (but still extensive at 45 shades) Make Up For Ever Artist Rouge Lipstick line, but today’s lipsticks just keep getting better and better.
Shout-out to the cosmetics chemists out there doing the damn thing to bring beauty lovers like you and me lipsticks that, not only last longer on our lips, but also pack more pigment into a creamier, more comfortable formula than their predecessors.
That’s the case with the Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Lipstick line, which relaunched online this month (and arrives at Sephora stores in August) with a new formula and a new outfit.
The line of 14 mattes (not including a couple of limited edition shades) and 31 creams encompases a rainbow of colors — 45 shades in all — from reds, pinks, berries and nudes to edgier offerings like blue, lilac, black and, yes, cray-cray green.
I’ve been a longtime fan of many of the O.G. Rouge Artist Lipsticks, including my beloved orangey coral #39, and I wondered how in the world MUFE could improve upon what I think is basically a pitch-perfect pigmented formula…but by Great Gatsby’s ghost, they FREAKIN’ DID IT.
The new formula is smoother, more moisturizing (they contain macadamia nut and mallow oils, fancy!) and longer-lasting. Even the new pointier bullet tip is easier to get into the corners and my Cupid’s bow.
Asking me to choose my favorite from among all 45 shades is like asking me to choose between Biggie and Tupac! — but that mint shade, C601, is absolutely bananas.
Please note: if you happen to wear it around a four-month-old baby girl, she may start screaming (OUT OF FEAR! FROM DELIGHT!) when she sees you.
I also really like the bad-@ss-ness of dark blue C603, a limited edition shade from a collaboration between MUFE and the group Icona Pop.
And from among the more traditional shades, matte nude M101 gets me through the day with a smile (as does matte hot pink M202).
M101 — that’s the one I’ll wear today. 🙂
What are you wearing for National Lipstick Day?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Hi Karen,
What foundation are you currently using? Soft Honey, Chanel is no longer available and I need a replacement.

There are so many awesome lipstick formulas launching these days!! This one looks like I should try it too. And kuddos to MUFE for including some unusual shades!
Tatiana says
I was so excited about these. Your swatches, the colors! Then I read they have macadamia nut oil in them. Waaahh!!! I am so allergic to macadamia nuts. Boo. Since I lick my lips sometimes, I won’t be trying these out.
Erin says
So far I’ve been super impressed with the nude shades. Not color wise for me but the formula makes lips look so good and they don’t skip or apply patchy or wear down crazy uneven like so many other nudes do!
Shannon says
Eeee I wanna see lip swatches of the green, blue, & lavender!
I went to Sephora the other day to find that dark green lippy from Bite Beauty you reviewed the other day, but ended up getting ensnared by Ciaté London’s Liquid Velvet liquid lipstick in Envy, a gorgeous blue (Sephora’s website calls it a “deep teal”). Sadly, I’m not wearing it at work – my boss would think I’m HELLA cray – but you can bet your buttons I’m gonna put it on as soon as I get home!
Once I’m a full-time musician (goals!), I wanna wear the craziest-colored lippies I can find 🙂 it just sounds like so much fun!

Wow, look at those colors! I want the darker hot pink and the red for sure.

Karen says
Hi Anusha,
I didn’t have time to do face shots, but I’ll try next week.

I saw a teenage girl last week wearing blue lipstick that could very well have been C603.
I’m also impressed that Connor noticed your Hulk Smash lips. My boys don’t even notice when I have a head of lettuce between my front teeth. HAHA!
Yvonne says
I have the old formula of Makeup Forever lipstick in the color
Artist Rouge Intense #13.
What color is like Artist Rouge Intense #13
in the new formula?
