Makeup Junkies, Don’t Miss the Nordstrom Cosmetics Trend Show!

Published in: Makeup, Makeup Tips/How To, News, Product Reviews

There are only two reasons I’d wake up at 5:00 a.m. on a cold, dreary Saturday morning — if I had to catch a plane to a far off tropical location, OR if I had the chance to see the latest Holiday makeup trends at the Nordstrom Cosmetics Trend Show.

After two cups of coffee and several layers of concealer (gotta hide those dark circles), your girl hauled her cookies over to Nordstrom Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek to see the best Holiday 2007 makeup and skincare trends from several lines, including Dior, Chanel, Lancome, Clinique, Philosophy and MAC.

I met up with my blogging buddy Christine, who I thought would be the only other person crazy enough to wake up at 5:00 a.m. to go look at makeup. Little did I realize we weren’t the only ones. When we got to the store at 7:30, there was already a line of women waiting out front. You go, ladies!

Hurry up and sit down, ya’ll!

To attend a Nordstrom Cosmetics Trend Show, visit their Web site for dates and locations near you (listed under their “Store Locations & Events” section). RSVP by phone. There’s a modest $15.00 cover charge, which applies toward any beauty/cosmetics purchases you make on the day of the event.

If you love cosmetics but are NOT a morning person, then be forewarned: the Trend Show is kinda like a rock concert. There’s loud music, hot models, screaming women (no joke!) and unbridled makeup enthusiasm. Several premier artists from top lines, like Louise Zizzo (MAC), John Fussell (Chanel), Rachel Ito (Clinique) and John Trau (Philosophy) discussed the hottest looks for this season.

Louise Zizzo from MAC works the crowd

John Fussel from Chanel. Check out the model’s boots!

Bold Lips and Eyes!

The three trends featured at this show were matte skin, lined eyes and red/burgundy lips.

Matte Skin:

– natural yet flawless extra-matte finish
new products have lightweight and transparent matte formulas, unlike the heavier mattes of the 90s
– healthier, brighter-looking skin without the shine

Matte skin and flirty lined eyes from Lancome

Lined eyes:

– dynamically lined eyes for powerful, strong looks
– for a flirty look, try black, slate or grey liner on top lashes
– for an edgy look, try liner on lower lashes only
– to keep focus on black-lined eyes, use natural lip tones

An edgy, chic look from MAC

Red/burgundy lips:

– colors for fall include scarlet, burgundy or aubergine hues
– top bold colors with gloss, or smooth down with matte pigments
– to draw attention to lips, use a slight touch of color on eyes and mascara only

Estee Lauder featured bold lips

But wait! There’s more…

Another great reason to sign up for one of these shows is you get free stuff. Everyone at this event received this stylish, roomy, silver train case.

In addition to the train cases we also got snacks. Honey, you know that the two ways to my heart are through Chanel and through my stomach, so I was super excited to open my little goody box to find it filled with fruit, muffins and other yummy morning snacks.

But the fun didn’t stop there. In one of the show’s many raffles, Christine, who at the start of the show bemoaned how she never wins anything, actually won a bag full of Fusion Beauty products, ha ha ha! Lucky!

Joelle Russo, Nordstrom beauty director and emcee for the show, gets ready to raffle off more goodies

After the show, attendees headed downstairs to the store’s beauty department to buy more goodies and get makeovers. Several of the lines had special gift-with-purchase offers, free samples, and “best of” product packages for sale.

A Philosophy bag from the trend show filled with of some of the best products in the line. Can you spot my new fave cleanser, Purity Made Simple?

This special gift from Clinique included Allure magazine favorites from their color and skincare lines

If you love makeup then I highly recommend checking it out one of these shows. There are two Nordsrom trend shows happening next weekend, November 17, at the Fashion Valley and Valley Fair Nordstrom stores in California. Check out the Nordstrom site for more details.

Oh, and if you do plan on going, don’t let your husband play around with your beauty loot when you get home. I’m just sayin’…

I hope your weekend has been full of lots of makeup fun!

  1. Christine says:

Good recap! I haven’t had a chance to upload pictures yet. Can I just say the Raspberry shower gel by Philosophy smells yummy? I crave sorbet so bad when I use it.

The Fusion Beauty products were all lip plumpers except for a bronzer. But wait, there IS good news (even if my lips really do not need extra plump in their step), IT DOES NOT BURN. It does not STING! There is a very slight sensation, but not at ALL like plushglass or Lip Venom. Problem? Oh, it’s expensive! $38 for a Lip Fusion gloss.

  2. Karen says:

There’s a recipe on the bottle too. I think I’m going to make it one of these days.

That’s good news regarding the Fusion Beauty products. I’m glad you won!

  3. nilla cookie says:

Oh no! What happened to your Clinique lipstick! Looks like your hubby did way more than inspect it 🙂

I went to the trend show a few weeks ago and I swear Joelle was wearing the same thing! Her shoes were cute though 😉 Amazing how all the girls look so good so early in the AM!!

  4. mich says:

Hey Karen, I’ve been a long time fan of your blog but have never commented so far … just wanted to tell you, you’re hilarious! I love coming over here for my breakfast entertainment 🙂

The trend show looks awesome. If I lived in the US I’d haul my ass out of bed at 5am for this with zero hesitation!

  5. Oh Gawd, I found out about this trend show after the one at my mall was already booked solid, and now I see how amazing it was! I need to be more on top of things happening at my Nordies…

On the plus side, read towards the end of this post:

  6. Vanessa says:

hahaha awww poor lipstick! I feel you, I lost many eyeshadows thanks to the boyfriend who had the sudden urge to dig his fingernail into the eyeshadows therefore causing it to crumble! Ugh! He doesn’t understand how much makeup costs nowadays! LOL

  7. Glosslizard says:

Oooh, that Philosophy set rocks! Did you know that Nordstrom is having a fragrance event on December 1st? Perfumes with music, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, yow!

Big time TJ’s alert! My local store has restocked a seasonal item that I fell in love with last year! Trader Joe’s sipping chocolate! It’s a rich, indulgent, grown-up cocoa mix that is absolutely terrific made into hot chocolate or a mocha! Also, new cookies! Dark chocolate stars! They are star-shaped shortbread cookies covered in dark chocolate! Super yummy! They were passing these around at the Lorac event at Sephora the other weekend, and then I found them at TJ’s! Yahoo! If you haven’t tried these, (and you like chocolate) check them out! And, yes, I have a bit of a chocolate fixation, why do you ask?

  8. Karen says:

    Hi ‘Nilla,

I know, right? I’m always tow up from the flo’ up before 10:00!

I think he figured out that the tube twisted, and got all twisty and happy with it without realizing that the lipstick inside moved UPWARD. Oh well! I guess that’s what lip brushes are for. 🙂

    Have a good week!

  9. Karen says:

MICH! Woo hoo! Thank you for saying “Hi!” 🙂 It’s nice to meet you. You would’ve totally gotten a kick out of it…especially the hooting and hollering. Oh, and the DJ! He was playing disco before 8:00 a.m.

  10. Karen says:

Thanks for the link love Christine. One of these days when you make it up to Nor Cal we’ll have to hit Nordies together!

  11. Karen says:

LOL, Vanessa! So glad someone feels my pain. I was so bummed when I found the boy had gotten all twist crazy with the lipstick. The shade is Bamboo Pink, and when I swatched it on my hand it was sooooo beautiful. (A friend told me today that she’s on her 33rd tube of it! I guess it’s *that* good!)

My shadows have been lucky enough to stay free from the boy destruction though!

  12. Karen says:

    Heya Glosslizard,

Yaah, I heard about the perfume event. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres sound good, but I have a theory that they’d get more people to go if they offered barbeque and all the fixins instead (maybe that’s my wishful thinking).

AND YUM! I’m going to TJ’s tomorrow to pick up some goodies. Right now I’m all about the Salsa Chips, Roasted Red Pepper and Tomato Soup, and Cheese Crunchies (aka fake Cheetoes). I’ve got to get those dark chocolate stars in my life!

  13. Glosslizard says:

Ok, I think we all know why they aren’t having fragrances compete with BBQ! Mmmmmmm, Everett & Jones!

I just discovered the soup too! What a lifesaver!

  14. Karen says:

That soup is really delicious. I don’t care for the Butternut Squash one, but I love the Roasted Red Pepper and Tomato, and the Corn one too. I’m getting really hungry right now with all this crazy talk about barbeque and TJs, lolol! 🙂

OH! Have you tried TJ’s frozen veggie dim sum? Granted, it’s like 100% fat but it’s soooo good.

  15. Glosslizard says:

Ooh, I haven’t tried the dim sum (yet), but their samosas are quite good (a little dry, but great flavor) and for serious comfort food, the mac and cheese rocks!

  16. Karen says:

Do you get that in the frozen section? I’ve tried the box kind and it’s okay. I can’t lie – I like old school Kraft with the scary neon orange cheese.

  17. Glosslizard says:

Yeah, the frozen section one (the “Joe’s Diner Mac ‘n Cheese”) has all this cheese on top that you stir in after it’s heated! Mmmmmm, cheesy goodness (channeling Homer Simpson)! I haven’t tried the boxed one at TJ’s yet, but yes, the old Kraft will always have a special place in my heart!

  18. Glosslizard says:

Have I mentioned that you have the best blog? Where else can I dish on makeup, aikido, reapers and pre-prepared food all in the same space?!?

  19. Karen says:

Seriously, the OG Kraft is kinda scary (who decided to make it that neon orange?) but so good. I’ll have to get that frozen mac and cheese one of these days. I bet it’s exponentially tastier than Lean Cuisine (blech…but you can’t beat it for 300 calories.)

AND LOL! Who knew that this would turn into Makeup and Beauty and Martial Arts and Trader Joes and Reapers BLOG?!?! I love it!

  20. kia says:

i missed this post and didn’t realize that you went to the trendshow.. so what did you buy to get your gwp?

  21. Karen says:

    Hi Kia,

I had a really nice friend from Clinique hook it up. I’m still recovering from the mangling of my Bamboo Pink lipstick, boo hoo.

Are you a Clinique fan? I’m really starting to fall in love with their skin care.
