Ah, the wonders of makeup bribery!
Yesterday I bought MAC’s Splashproof Lash Mascara in Blacksplash ($12), but before throwing down the credit card, I struck a deal with myself.
The “payment” for the mascara would have to come in the form of seven 45-minute sessions on the stair stepper machine at the gym. Hello, sweaty beast.
I figure the whole makeup-in-exchange-for-cardio thing 1) helps get my booty looking cute in time for summer and 2) provides me with an excuse to try a new waterproof product! 🙂
Splashproof is MAC’s only waterproof mascara, and I’ve been told it lengthens, thickens and separates lashes without clumping or flaking. Right now it’s being sold with the new A Rose Romance collection, but it’s also part of MAC’s permanent collection.
Last night I applied two layers before my first 45-minute stair session and paid close attention to how it performed…
First, it glided on without clumping or flaking, so application-wise it’s a star.
MAC Splashproof Mascara
I noticed my lashes looked a little longer and separated with it on but not very thick. It definitely doesn’t deliver thickness as dramatic as the thickness I see when I wear Stila Lash Visor mascara.
Fourty-five minutes and two burnin’ butt cheeks later, I checked my makeup in the mirror.
Splashproof held onto the curl well but had begun to smudge a little.
Hmm…
Next time, I’ll try to get control of the smudging by using a tad less product (tapping/wiping the wand before application).
First impression: Splashproof mascara is just okay. I think I prefer Stila Lash Visor’s thickening powers, but if your lashes are already thick and you’re really just looking for a waterproof mascara to add some length and separation, Splashproof might be worth a look.

Hungry, hungry hippo
Eek! I just realized that only thing I’ve eaten today was a single Eggo waffle (“leggo my Eggo!”). Now I’m starving! I think I’ll walk to the French bakery across the street for lunch. They have this yummy chicken salad I like, yum. 🙂
What did you do for lunch today?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

I am not huge on waterproof mascara, it always seems to rip my eyelashes off when I try to remove it. Plus I haven’t ever found one that was thick enough.
My lunch today was at home (I’m off today) and I had a turkey sandwich on wheat with mustard, lettuce and low-fat provolone. Not my fav BUT just got back from my Doc this morning and my cholesterol is outta control! I have 6 weeks to clean my act up so this gives me a whole ‘nother level of motivation to eat better, work out and be healthier in general!

Hi Vampy Varnish,
This surprisingly was pretty easy to remove. I used Philosophy Purity Made Simple and that was it.
Sorry to hear about your cholesterol. 🙁 But yah, I’m sure it provides some good motivation to get fit. Will you have to revamp your eating habits drastically?

i’m not really a big fan of mac mascaras, i own a plush lash and have tried other mac mascaras, but comparing them to drugstore mascaras, drugstore wins over mac for this one ! and plus their really cheap too!
whats your opinion on mac mascaras?

What is it about mascara that makes it so damned hard to find the perfect one!
I actually had a chicken salad sandwich at my desk today. I took a walk into the town (about 15 mintues from my office) and got that and some Nivea body lotion which claims to shrink up to 3cm off of your fat parts with visible results in 4 weeks. I doubt it’ll do anything as dramatic as that, but if its as good as the Dove Firming Gel Cream that got discontinued a year or so ago I’ll be happy!
Well done on the work out! I’m going to be getting the old lateral thigh trainer out tomorrow and forcing myself into a workout. Yuck!

Hi Beth,
OHHH I need some magic fat slimming lotion — I want to put it on my right thigh. It’s bigger than my left, go figure. Please let me know if it works.
Good luck on the thigh trainer tomorrow… it sounds like sweet, sweet pain. 🙂
Got any exciting plans for tonight?
Vampy Varnish says
Well I have been eating pretty much whatever I want the last year (which isn’t good haha) so I need to eliminate most of the butter/cheese/dairy that I so love. I think that will clear a lot of it up. I don’t eat a ton of red meat, but I am going to cut back on that also. I bought some Cheerio’s and oatmeal today that the Doc says helps a lot. We shall see!

Hi Vampy Varnish,
I was gonna ask you if you bought some Cheerios! I eat the Honey Nut ones and like to read the box while I’m chomping down a bowl in the morning… the one I have has all of these success stories about people who lowered their cholesterol by eating Cheerios. I hope it works for ya. 🙂
Like you, I’ve been eating whatever I want for the past few months… now I gotta work it all off. It was fun while it lasted!

OOH! i’m so glad i saw this review today! i was thinking of buying it , but wasn’t sure if it was good.. BUT your review has convinced me =D hehe i don’t know what i’m gonna eat for lunch today! i’m feelin’ brazilian tho ! mmm delish! hehe anyway have a good day karen =] takecaree!
Karen says
Hi Jana,
It’s an okay mascara… it’s good, but not life changing, ya know? You might want to try it just for fun. 🙂
Brazilian food sounds delish. Eat some carbs for me!

I really like the rationale on that, intense workout=make-up incentive. I could really go crazy with that one.
I really like Stila Lash Visor, for a waterproof mascara. I usually try to guess when I’m going to be crying/sweating/getting wet and not wear any at all. I tend to rub my eyes (reflex) and the shadow comes off as well.
Have you tried out MAC’s Dazzlelash? The MUA at Nordstrom was raving about it to another customer (I woulda grabbed some but I was just waiting to sign the cc slip on the stuff I’d already bought).
I too have a 6 weeks to get my butt smaller, doctors orders for a foot problem. I’m gonna have to watch what I eat a whole lot more.

Hi TaLaisa,
I know, right? I think I’m going to go crazy with it too. 🙂
I have tried Dazzlelash. It’s okay. I like the small brush and how it adds thickness, but it doesn’t really rock my world. I’m super picky about mascaras, though.
How’s your foot? Do you have recurring injury or did it just start up?
TaLaisa says
Karen,
I’ve not yet found a single mascara that totally rocks all by itself, I have to layer two different kinds.
The foot is not a recurring injury, it may be a stress fracture or plantar facitis. But it’s a new thing and it’s definitely putting a damper on my get down to the wedding size by the anniversary plans. DH was a team trainer for the college so he’s familiar with both and has said I have to have the doctor rule out the stress fracture before I do anything crazy.
I’m going to have to find alternative workouts that make me drip with sweat (like running) and give me the after highs (like running) and bust through the pounds at the same time. I may be lifting weights all day, think of all the make up I can earn!

Hi TaLaisa,
Layering rocks. I haven’t been doing it lately because I’ve been too lazy. 🙂
Plantar Facitis definitely puts a damper on exercise plans. I had a case after running a half-marathon a few years ago. Hmm… have you tried spinning? It really gets the sweat on without the same impact as running.

Still love Maybelline FnS the best. I actually don’t really like much thickness because I have fairly dense lashes and it just clumps them all together.
I was happy b/c I got to go out to lunch w/ my besties today. We went to our fav sushi place near campus.
Remember to feed yourself Karen! It’s really important!

Hi Catherine,
A lot of women love FNS! I haven’t tried it — I tend to shy away from Maybelline because of my experiences with Great Lash.

aww I’m all for thickening lashes and if it doesn’t do that trick, i’ll just avoid buying it 🙂
Karen, have you heard of Max Factor’s False Lash Effect mascara? does it really thicken and give you that falsies effect? i haven’t tried it yet but i always eye it every time i pass by a Max Factor counter.. 😀
thanks! 🙂

Thanks for the review. I was looking to purchase in the near future, but it seems as though I will stick with my current. I do need to find a good water proof mascara. Even when in guy mode, I always wear mascara. Any tips?
Have to work a bit on the garden today and make my daily run to Starbucks.
Karen says
Hi Jonni,
I am crushing hard on Stila Lash Visor. It adds thickness, length and has an amazing glossy finish. Plus it holds the curl all day, too and is very affordable. Here’s a recent review along with pictures: Stila Lash Visor Review.
YUM, Starbucks sounds good. I’ll have a non-fat latte, please!

I had 1/2 a chicken sandwhich, and a bite of leftover lasagna for lunch. I wanted a variety of tastes haha.
I was at Target getting candy before a movie with friends (you save $10 if you buy the Coke Zero and Gummi Worms at the target next to the theater rather than at the theater lol. Go my youthful metabolism that burns candy off!), and grabbed some Rimmel Glam Eyes Mascara, because it was on sale.
I’m surprised! It works quite well, with minimal (if none) smudging, and lots o volume. I put it on over BadGal Lash, or Stila Lash Visor =D
Karen says
Hi Kailey,
Seriously, you gotta appreciate that before it leaves you. I miss the days when I could eat junk food with abandon and stay a size 2. Those days are OVER, LOL!

I think I am going to buy the Chanel “leopard” lippy on Ebay.
But the Chanel website does a top button you can click on that says: “deja vu”
They have some celebrated old favorites that are still around. Give it a try.
My very best to you and hubby Karen on your trip and your mil’s dx. It sounds like things are in the right direction.
Have a great Sunday!

I’ve been searching for a thickening mascara like crazy! I was actually considering this mac mascara but will definitely try the Stila Lash Visor’s thickening powers mascara instead.
Thanks!
