Wearing the new MAC A Novel Romance Quad ($40) on my eyes

Fabio, dahling, take me now! — to the computer, so that I may satisfy this hunger burning deep within my soul.

Yup, the new MAC A Novel Romance collection launched online today, and it’s huge.

Huge both in terms of the fact that it’s the brand’s big release for fall, and huge just in terms of the number of products, especially the eyeshadows.

Overwhelmed much? I am. If you’re looking for a place to start, steer your lusty makeup-lovin’ loins toward one of my favorite quads in the collection, the aptly named A Novel Romance ($40).

This one, I think almost anyone could wear because it covers the color temperature bases well. You have your warmer olive, My Fantasy (the lightest shade), and the golden pearl in Rising Passions (the darkest shade), which balance well with the quad’s cooler-toned elements, namely grayish mauve Fall in Lust and blackened brown Dance in the Dark.

That balance of warm and cool could make it pretty popular with many different skin tones.

Here I’m wearing Dance in the Dark in the crease and on my lower lash line, Rising Passions in the outer corners, Fall in Lust in the center of my lids and My Fantasy in the inner corners.

I’m also wearing MAC Powder Blush in Fun Ending (also from A Novel Romance) and NARS Audacious Lipstick in Julie…

One might expect the mix and warm and cool elements to straight-up brawl and not get along, but no. They don’t appear disjointed or mismatched to me. When I wear these shades together, I think they mesh well. It’s very zen…

Heck, if I can’t achieve balance in my day-to-day life, at least I can achieve with my makeup using this quad. 🙂 Ommmmm…

The combination of olive, mauve, brown and charcoal green also seems refreshing and unusual. Not the typical black/gray/dark blue/plum we see a lot in smokey fall palettes and quads. Here, you get all that sexy, sooty smokiness, but you get it without deep black, which I think is very “cool girl in a messy bun and leather jacket.”

PRICE: $40
AVAILABILITY: Limited edition, and available now online at; coming August 21 to stores, and internationally in September

I am absolutely loving the purple shade in this quad. It reminds me of an amped up version of Shale.

Me thinks it looks lovely on you but I don’t think I could pull this off. Or maybe it’d look ok but isn’t a look I’d go for. Really happy it’s such a large collection bc there are so many options. I’m also gleefully anticipating the arrival of the Brooke Shields Collection. There’s a 15 count eyeshadow palette that looks like it’s sooooo much fun. Whoopi!

I like the looks of the olive and the darkest shade. Very messy bun and leather jacket indeed…a look I could totally not pull off, but I’d wear shadows like these any way 🙂
