Is the new MAC In Extreme Dimension 3D Black Lash mascara right for you?
Well, if you happen to be blessed with Zac Efron-like lashes, all super curly and bee-yoo-ti-ful, then perhaps, yes. In Extreme Dimension could be the best thing since pizza-scented Febreze.
(Actually, there’s no such thing as pizza-scented Febreze, but doesn’t it sound great?)
That’s because its one weakness is holding curls, but if you’ve already got ’em, you’re golden.
Other than wimpy curl hold, it delivers lots of bells and whistles for girls/guys who love dramatic black lash looks — no clumps, no flakes or smudges, and you get lots of really lovely length, separation and volume (just shy of the epic Le Volume de Chanel).
Plus, it doesn’t make my lashes feel crunchy or weighed down, and removing it before bed is a snap.
But DAMN! What’s up with the curl? Immediately after I apply the first coat, the curl from my Shu starts relaxing. In no time flat, my naturally straight lashes are back to being straight, sans any curl or lift.
I know it’s a big no-no…but whenever I wear this mascara, I actually go back and re-curl my lashes after I apply the last coat to get that wide-eyed look I love so much (but I’m careful).
Now, I collect mascaras like a cat lady collects cats, and I get a kick out of combinations. I usually end up combining mascaras in layers, like I’ll start with a layer of one product that excels at holding a curl — Make Up For Ever’s Smoky Extravagant comes to mind — before adding something like In Extreme Dimension 3D on top.
“MAC’s lightweight whipped formula now in an intense blacker than black pigment saturates lashes root to tip, adds volume, extends length and creates curl, while conditioning for softness and flexibility. The final result: extreme dimension that won’t smudge, clump or flake. Exclusive mega brush designed to apply optimal amount of mascara. Ophthalmologist tested.”
Before I forget, doesn’t it seem like the prices of MAC’s mascaras have been creeping up? Remember when you could buy a tube of Zoom Fast Black Lash for $13 just a few years ago? Now it’s $16.
I used to think that MAC mascaras were some of the best bargains at the department store level, but they’re working their way up to Dior. This one clocks in at $21. Hrmpf!
If you have naturally curly lashes or don’t really care about lash curl, I think this is a good mascara. It delivers big, bold, lush lashes, and I like how dramatic my lashes look when I’m wearing it. I just don’t think I’d ever get into a fistfight to defend its honor on account of its issues with curl hold.
PRICE:$21 for a 0.44-ounce tube

I must have this! I got naturally curly lashes so I just got lucky not to curl it everyday. Wearing a mascara is like coffee for me, I just can’t live without it.
Karen says
Lucky you! I have to curl mine every day.

I have a huge problem finding a mascara that can hold the curl. I also need water resistant because I wear contacts. My favorite from the past was Loreal le grand curl. but that’s been gone for years. What mascara is your fave for holding a curl? cheap or not, I will give it a try

I bought this mascara after reading about it in The Sunday Times. The write up stressed the point that no eye lash curler was needed as it produced fabulous curl. That and the fact it was also promoted as completely smudgeproof prompted my purchase as i do have moist eyes and usually require waterproof. Hugely disappointed. It takes ages to dry, which is why i think it doesnt hold any curl, and smudges long after application. I will be giving this away to any friend that wants it and hot foot it straight back to Lancome Hypnose Doll’s Eyes Waterproof Mascara.
