Even though I like to think of myself as youthful (hello, I like all things teenagery, a la The Hills and Us Weekly!), finding a scary white hair on my left eyebrow a few weeks ago gently reminded me of my age, EEK!
Now I’m on an anti-aging makeup kick, hence my new love affair with DuWop’s Foundation of Youth ($38), a liquid foundation I picked up on a recent trip to Sephora.
DuWop bills oil-free Foundation of Youth as an “anti-aging” product, one they claim will noticeably reduce the appearance of fine lines and help restore firmness to skin.
It comes in six shades, and the one I have is called Beige.
Unlike most foundations, it comes with an attached brush applicator. You squeeze the tube, which moistens the attached brush with foundation, and then sweep the brush over your face to distribute and blend.
Right off the bat I could see a difference in the texture of my skin. My pores looked smaller, and fine lines appeared softer.
You know how some foundations can actually appear to exaggerate imperfections in your skin as the day wears on? Not DuWop. It maintained a smooth, consistent texture even after a full day of wear.
Before DuWop
After DuWop
This stuff feels weightless on my skin, and half the time I forget I’m wearing it at all. Coverage is sheer to medium, and Beige looks like it just melts into my skin. As if that weren’t enough, it photographs well and hasn’t broken me out so far (*crosses fingers*).
While great, it could have gone down in my personal makeup history book as fantastic had it been packaged differently and had it not come attached to that $38 price tag (ouch).
It’s a little less expensive than my beloved Laura Mercier Oil-Free Foundation (which runs $42 for a 1 oz. bottle), but it’s still ex-pen-sive.
And I wish I could trade the attached brush for a regular ole’ pump dispenser. I like the brush okay for distributing foundation, but it doesn’t blend very well and leaves a lot of streaks. I usually use my fingers to blend the product instead.
The squeeze tube doesn’t help, either, making it difficult to deposit the right the amount of product. If I’m not super careful with it (e.g. if I get squeeze happy), I end up with too much foundation on the brush head.
DuWop Foundation of Youth
Price: $38
Use: A lightweight, sheer-to-medium coverage foundation that softens the appearance of pores and fine lines
Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B+
If you’re dexterous enough to use the brush applicator and don’t mind spending $38 for a lightweight foundation with sheer-to-medium coverage, DuWop Foundation of Youth makes an excellent choice.
You might like Foundation of Youth if…
- You typically purchase foundations in the $40 price range
- You are concerned about large pores and fine lines on your skin
- You desire sheer-to-medium coverage
- You have combo dry/acne-prone skin
- You like scented products, as it smells strongly of honeysuckle
- You like brush applicators
- You prefer cruelty-free makeup
- You want an oil-free foundation

Okay, who else is counting down the hours until The Hills premiere tonight?
I really want to believe that Heidi will grow a brain this season and ditch Spencer! That boy’s just bad news.

Hey Karen!
I have been following your blog for about a year now and absolutely love it! Just wanted to let you know about this wonderful product I just tried and can’t get enough of: its Smashbox’s Baked Fusion Soft Lights.
Its a wonderful silky powder that can be used as a bronzer/highlighter or just by itself to give some color to your cheeks. I LOVE this product and had to tell you about it, I noticed you hadn’t reviewed it or talked about it, so definitely try it if you get a chance. I am Indian and have dark skin and it gives me a nice peachy/bronze/gold glow without being glittery. So enjoy and keep blogging!! Cheers

Hi Merylynmagic,
Okay, noted. I love a good glow, and this sounds great! 🙂

Thanks for the review, i tried this foundation at sephora at while it was nice, the attached brush thing really annoys me, don’t even get me started on the squeeze tube. AHH i cant wait for the hills tonight, im starting to like heidi again, her new music is pretty hot in my opinion. Never thought id be saying that
Karen says
Hi BJ,
LOL! Do you like the video where she’s wearing the ’80s exercise get up?
I was watching a few old eps and maaaan she looks really different!
Didi says

Hi Didi,
Thanks! I hope you find a shade that suits you! 🙂 It’s a very nice foundation.

Karen,
You look fantastic! However, the last thing I need is to look YOUNGER. It’s bad enough I still get carded at the movies and every person I talk to says, “Seriously? You’re 20? You look 16!” I know I should be flattered but it is so annoying! I have to show my ID to the UPS or FedEx delivery men if something needs to be signed because no one believes me!
I was once asked by a sales representative when I was 17 at a furniture store if I were buying for my new apartment. I told him I was too young to be doing that (I still live with my parents, even now). He looked at me and said, “Really? You look 25.” It took every cell to convince myself not bitch-slapped him right then and there. I did not feel that old nor looked that old. I was actually having a pretty good day because I had no pain (for once) until he kinda ruined it. Needless to say, he didn’t get the sale nor did I come back as I found that completely insulting.
Karen says
Hi Katie & Zena,
Enjoy it while it lasts. I had that problem for many years. And now I don’t! 🙂

I love those trashy magazine as well, I can’t help staring at the titles whenever I am checking out stuff at grocery stores…
Karen says
Hi Citrine,
Seriously… they’re like brain candy. I love them because they turn my mind all mushy but hate them because they make me feel guilty — I should be reading something like The Economist instead, LOL! 🙂
Kailey says
I adore Luminous Moisturizing Foundation by Bobbi Brown. It makes my skin flaw-less, yet gives it that little natural glow I love. It works great with my blush, and still looks natural enough to sneak by my anti-makeup headmistress =]
Karen says
Hi Kailey,
Oh, that’s some sneaky foundation! Do you apply it with fingers or do you use a brush?
Bridget says
I’d love to try this foundation. I might when I go return the Smashbox HD foundation I have… the lightest color isn’t light enough! So I’m worried about having only 6 shades to choose from with DuWop. Worth a try though. 🙂

Hi Bridget,
The shade selection was really limited, and that’s one thing that I hope they change in the future. Hopefully they’ll have something that suits your skin tone. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for ya!

I dont like inbuilt brushes.. i like to do the applying myself!!
Karen says
Hi Tali,
Hey, you never know! Stranger things have happened!

Hey Karen, long time no comment (sorry!) I have been totally keeping up though and I love the updated look of the blog.
Thank you SO much for reminding me that the Hills was back. I am going to watch – of course – but like the City so much better now. I’m also sold on giving this foundation a whirl in the summer – but I just tried Hello Flawless and I love it. We’ll see how it holds up when the humidity hits.

Laurie!
How’s life out in DC? I hope things are going well for you.
Ohmigosh, I have The Hills Tivoed and ready to go! You know I gotta get my Speidi on!
Oh — I like The City, too. Much more interesting characters.
Did you watch the latest round of The Real World? For once they had people on there that I kinda liked.
Hmm. I just realized from this comment that I watch waaay to much TV!
Heather says
Hey, did you know the brush applicator is removable? Then you can squeeze it onto your hand and use a regular foundation brush!
Karen says
Hi Heather,
It isn’t. The packaging is constructed in a way where it’s fused to the tube. I can’t just screw it off, boo!
Laurie says
Hey! We actually moved to Chicago – which is why I’ve been so out of the loop:) We moved a month ago – and it’s awesome! Except for it’s cold and windy and in DC – it’s totally already spring. It’s good to be closer to family though and I love the shopping here.
I’m a few eps behind on the Real World – but I liked this season. I am a huge tv fan overall and MTV sucks me in especially! Huge fan of ABDC too:) Hope a season 4 isn’t too far off!

Hi Laurie,
OH! That’s so exciting! Do you have a new job now, or are you working for the same company?
Yeah, I’m surprised that the Real World producers decided to pick a bunch of people who were actually driven to do things. I have a little crush on Ryan, ha ha ha!
In general I feel like everything is right with the world when there’s some kind of dance related reality TV show on. I am sorely missing my ABDC!
Laurie says
I got a new job. My husband got one first (he works for the govt – so same-ish job) and by some miracle I got a job before we moved – and I love it. It’s still corporate PR for an agency, and it’s totally fun. I feel lucky seeing as I know lots of others are experiencing layoffs or unemployment.
Do you watch So You Think You Can Dance? I think that starts up in May – assuming they’re doing another season – which I bet they will. Shane Sparks used to be on that before ABDC. I have such a crush on him!

Hi Laurie,
Me too! He’s the only one I really listen to on the show. I like Lil’ Mama because she’s so cute, but sometimes she loses me when she busts out into the weird analogies. And J.C. – aye. I just like to see what goofy outfit he wears every week.
I watched a few random SYTYCD eps about a year ago but I never really got into it. When I was at the gym last week I caught part of Dancing with the Stars and I was surprised to see Lil’ Kim on there! Do you ever watch that? It was actually kinda interesting. It briefly took away the pain of the stair stepper…
Anyway, that’s great news to hear about your new gig. I bet you’ll get a lot of opportunities to build your skill set! 🙂
Marisol says
The brush would be a turn off for me too.
I can’t wait for the Hills. I have to wait til tomorrow to watch it since I don’t have cable. Boo!
