If I’m gonna wear teal on my upper lash lines, it needs to be flashy. Flashy enough for New Year’s and divas at drag queen karaoke at the very, very least.
I mean, it’s teal, right? — the kryptonite of “no-makeup makeup” eye liner looks.
But ever since Laura Mercier’s new $22 Canard Crème Eye Liner debuted on counters with the rest of Laura’s Folklore summer 2013 collection, I’ve been rethinking my stance.
Canard, or “duck” en français (shout-out to high school French!), shares much in common with Laura’s other Crème Eye Liners. Despite its low-key flat matte finish, it’s packed with pigment, doesn’t get patchy, and best of all, it has the grip strength of a heavyweight MMA fighter! — even when worn without primer.
This mallard really threw me for a loop. It showed me just how great a matte teal can look when paired with a shimmery shadow. The flat finish acts like a focal point, drawing attention right to my lash lines.
I dig it, especially with bronzed cheeks and a nude lip.
True, cream liners can be tricky if you’re not used to ’em, so if you’ve tried Laura’s Crème Eye Liner and had trubs with the application, you might try using a bent liner brush.
Sonia Kashuk makes a $6 Bent Eyeliner Brush I like. Unloading as much excess product from the brush head before bringing up to your eyes should also help. I usually brush mine against the inside of the jar’s lid.
PRICE: $22
AVAILABILITY: Available now online and at Laura Mercier counters
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: A+
After the events in Boston yesterday…
It felt strange writing about eyeliner and lip gloss this morning. Seemed silly, you know?
I’ve enjoyed running ever since I was a teenager, and even though I’ve never run a marathon, I have crossed a few finish lines, and one thing I’ve learned is that when you don’t think you have anything left to give, you usually do.
All we can do is try to put one foot in front of the other, lift each other up, help however we can.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Looks so pretty! Such a pretty shade.
I am not a runner, though, I am terrible at it.

I’m terrible at sports that involve fast-moving projectiles!
Jaye Brown says
I picked up Canard this weekend and have been wearing it ever since. I freakin’ LOVE it. It’s amazing how something this blue works well for every day wear. And on a day like today, I needed to inject a little bit of fun, you know?
Karen says
Hi Jaye,
It’s so great. Have you tried any other shades of Laura’s Creme Liner? Every single one I’ve worn is awesome.
Danielle says
Very pretty! I don’t wear much eye makeup on a day-to-day basis, so this is perfect to change up my everyday look. Thanks, Karen!
Karen says
You’re welcome, Danielle. What are you usual eye makeup shades?
Agata says
That eyeliner looks stunning. I hardly ever wear teal/green on my eyes but yesterday I got a new Revlon palette and it had teal and green and I used them yesterday and I absolutely fell in love with the colors. Who knew teal would look good on me??? Speaking of, have you seen the summer Lancome palette? I think I need it!
I know it seems silly to write about eyeliners and eyshadows after events in Boston yesterday but we cannot let fear stop us from doing what we normally do. And we can only hope that there is still more good in people than bad and I think it’s great how in events like that all Americans can come together and unite….
Karen says
Hi Agata,
I can see green and teal working on you. I bet the contrast really popped against your skin! I haven’t had the chance to see Lancome summer, but hopefully soon. 🙂
That’s so true about not letting fear stop us. It really is important to keep on keeping on.

Love that color reminds me of a old MAC gel liner I own that’s kinda dried up called blue peep.I might have to pick this up! So sad about the bombing yesterday but we can’t let evil deeds like this stop us from functioning. We have to support each other and get our joy where we can.
Karen says
Hi Denise,
How funny, I have an old MAC Fluidline called Jadeye and Canard totally brings back memories of that shade.
And thank you for this nice comment. 🙂

I love colored liners especially when I’m sporting a neutral look, the 1st graders I work with are always fascinated by it.
Kim says
That liner is just ducky. 😉
I’m grateful that you’re writing about eyeliner today. I can always count on you to be funny, insightful and positive. When we see the terrible things people do to one another, it’s comforting to know that there are also good people – like you – to help lift us up. Whatever you decide to write about, I always know it will be a bright spot in the day. 🙂
Karen says
Hi Kim,
Oh, you know I love a good pun! 😀
And thank you for this. It makes me feel better.
Kalli says
I LOVE teal eyeliner! It’s definitely one of my makeup vices, but it’s such a fun color and it looks great on just about everyone. Anyway, I may have to pick this one up.
I think it’s great you’re blogging today, some of us need a little pick-me-up after reading all of the terrible coverage from yesterday 🙂
Karen says
Hi Kalli,
Thanks, girl. 🙂
So, eyeliner. What are your favorite teal liners?
Kalli says
I love Urban Decay’s Junkie liner, and I have two from Nyx (one is retractable and the other is liquid). I also love Nars Kaliste, but it always runs and gets all over my eyelids, unless I use a sealer. I like Laura Mercier’s line, I had my eye makeup done at the counter a few months back and her tight liner was awesome!

The world needs positivity along with the realism of what happened.
The eyeliner is gorgeous! I don’t run. I’ve never been good at running, even as a kid, and I also have a heart condition that makes it extremely difficult (one of my symptoms is “Exercise Intolerance” which makes me laugh).
Karen says
Hi Chelsea,
So true. It’s good to see the bright lights when things get dark.
Re: liner. I can’t remember — are you a teal gal, too?
Chelsea says
I’ve worn teal liner, but I don’t typically. I wear brown/bronze 95% of the time (L’Oreal Infallible Gel Liner), sometimes plum or navy.

thank you for this post! Second only to my Boston friend’s status update that she and her family just missed this finish line tragedy. She reminded me that: Anything can happen, anywhere, anytime. Life is too precious to not embrace the good every possible second! Keep doing what you are doing, you bring light and positivity to this corner of the internet!
PS is that the Burnt Clay lip crayon? anxiously await your Laura Lip crayon review! you rock this look!

I LOVE this color! I tend to wear teal eyeliners with copper/gold shadow. Don’t know why, but I love it!
I live in the Boston area and it’s been so surreal. Still can’t believe it happened.

Karen,
Do you know if Smartlash eyelash enhancer has the same reputation as Latisse in that in can darken the iris if you have blue eyes ? I can’t find any literature on it,
