Food-scented lotions don’t always do a lot for my soul. When I slapped a layer of Kiehl’s Spiced Plum Hand and Body Lotion ($19.50) on my arms the other day, I didn’t expect it to make me want to gnaw them off an half hour later. But that it did.
This lightweight, limited-edition (non-edible) lotion smells like a mix of brown sugar, cinnamon and homemade plum tart. The scent isn’t overly sweet, which is totally key for me. Some foody lotions, like those that smell doughy, can make me nauseous, and I think vanilla scent is used far too often. I don’t like to cruise around smelling like a Rice Krispy treat, ya know? Spiced Plum’s subtle notes blend with its sweeter tones, creating a perfect balance between naughty and nice. Yummy!
If you’re used to Elizabeth Arden 8-Hour Cream’s moisturizing power, this might not be moisturizing enough for you. On my extra-scaly parts (legs and arms), it works reasonably well — a not as great as 8-Hour but better than Vaseline Intensive Care. I like that it isn’t greasy and doesn’t take a lot of effort to work into my skin; that’s very appealing to my slap-it-on-and-get-ready-to-boogie side.
I wore Spiced Plum while writing this entry, by the way, and because of the smell had to refrain from nibbling on my arm, yo!
How ’bout you? Do you like to smell like food (hey, at least it’s calorie-free!)? Or do you prefer your baked goods on a plate?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
Tekoa says
Heh. I like smelling like food. One of my favorite perfumes smells like ginger ale. There’s also my coconut, raspberry, chocolate, and grapefuit-ish smelling perfumes.
Karen says
Hi Tekoa,
Is that the Ginger Ale by Demeter? I like that one, too, because I love drinking ginger ale. When I met El Hub he used to make fun of me all the time because of this – he claimed that the only people who he knew who ever drank ginger ale were old folks who watched Lawrence Welk on PBS, go figure.
I was crazy about the Body Shop’s grapefruit shower gel a few years ago…
Allie says
I love the food ones! Yesterday I bought the Philosophy Red Velvet Cake shampoo/shower gel/bubble bath and I want to drink it out of the bottle. They have so many great ones, I want them all!
Holly says
Hey Karen,
Just wanted to say thanks for the reconmendation of Mac smoulder eyeliner for the easiest smokey eye in the world!
I bought it today at lunch time, was in court all day (representing not being charged lol!) then had to go straight out for dinner so had literally 5 mins to freshen up my makeup and tried it out and literally in 5 mins i had a really nice subtle smokey eye!
I also got the brow powder duo which im loving already, I was very sad though that they didnt have any 209 brushes in stock 🙁 and i was so excited to try it out! But never mind im going to try the new Mac stand alone store in Liverpool this weekend!
Karen says
Hi Allie,
I really like Philosophy’s scents, too. You know, it just hit me that I’ve never in my life eaten Red Velvet Cake! It sure looks yummy, though. 🙂
Happy Wednesday!
Karen says
Hi Holly,
Wow, I’m so glad that Smolder worked for you! It’s one of those MAC cult products that every person needs in their kit.
Bummer about the 209! That’s one of my faves for Fluidline. What are you going to get at the standalone store in Liverpool (besides the 209)?
Kimie says
Oh I’m with ya girl, I hate smelling like a sugar cookie! The only food type smell I like is palmers cocoa butter and Im wearing body shop’s grapefruit body butter right now! Speaking of sugar, have you tried the sugar body scrub from coastal scents?? OMG it’s the shizzz 🙂
Karen says
Hey Kimie,
Ahhh, the Palmer’s Cocoa Butter. I gotta be in the mood for that one. For some reason it smells really chocolate-y to me. It’s moisturizes like a mo’ fo’ though, so I can’t hate.
I’ve never tried that Sugar Body Scrub. Does it smell good? Is it oily? One thing I can’t hang with some scrubs is where they are oily and leave a slippery film on the tub floor (seriously, I’m soooo clumsy and that just adds danger in my life that I don’t need, LOL).
Megan says
I’m with you Karen on the food scents and especially vanilla. I personally don’t like to smell like a cookie…unless I’ve been baking. I can occasionally get down with a fruity scent though… like grapefruit (I love the bath and body works antibacterial hand soap…it’s right by my kitchen sink). And I once had a cherry and papaya lotion a couple years back that I loved…I don’t remember who it was by though. I also like nutty scents…like almond is great…and coconut can be good depending on the brand and the fragrance.
Holly says
Hi Karen,
I think im becoming a Mac convert, its quite a bit cheaper than Chanel too which means i can buy more 🙂
Im going to try a blusher i think, i just want to bring an old one in with me though because i think ive found a similar one in Mac to an old Chanel colour which i adore but has been discontinued!
I also tried out the tinted lip conditioner which i loved, my lips feel lovely and soft now, it will be perfect for a low key look for uni and to condition my lips at the same time! I may get a 318 brush too to go with it lol!
Do you have any other must have mac items that i just have to try???
Karen says
Hi Megan,
I can get down with the fruit too, if it’s not overly sweet fruit. Tart smelling fruit I’m okay with, for some weird reason.
I like the citrus B&B works hand soaps, too. The Lime & Coconut one is my fave. 🙂
Tekoa says
It IS Ginger ale by Demeter! I thought it was the coolest thing ever invented since the internet. You can tell your El Hub that Canadians also drink ginger ale in addition to old people. And not all of us watch PBS.
Karen says
Hi Holly,
Yup, quite a few! For sure check out…
Fluidline in Blacktrack (can’t live without this)
Eyeshadows: Woodwinked, Mulch, Soba, Kid, Club, Vex…these are my holy grail go-to neutrals. They never fail me and you can combo them with brighter blues and greens.
Blushes: Blushbaby blush (a wonderful matte flush pink)
Cremestick liners – all of ’em!
Regular Lip liners – Spice, Subculture
Cream Color Base in Pearl (great for lids, they really make eyeshadow colors pop)
MAC Moisturelush Cream and Moisturelush Eye Cream – I don’t like much of the MAC skin care line but these are to die for.
Technakohl eye pencil in Graphblack
🙂 OH – and the 182 buffer brush. This is the ONLY brush I like for liquid foundation or tinted moisturizer!
Karen says
LOL, Tekoa! If only I knew about the ginger ale drinking four years ago, when I wanted to move to Canada after our last election. I would’ve packed up my stuff, fo’ sho. I don’t every recall seeing anyone drink ginger ale here in public, now that think about it…it must be terribly unhip in California!
Lena says
The yummier the better! I love Jaqua’s shower gels for that reason. And Lush has a shower gel that smells like chocolate and coffee so yummy…
Sophie says
Hi Karen!
Today (here in France it’s yet Thursday!!),i will purchase some Mac make-up you recommended to me… I do have written my list!!
About french brands,i’m absolutly in love with “Esthederm”.
It’s a beauty salon brand witch is not available everywhere here. However, you can get it at Sephora stores or sephora.fr and at “les galeries lafayette”.
Their products have done a really great job…I do have made it up my skin !!
I discovered them in 2001, when i took some accutane therapy… My skin was so dry and sensitive that it couldn’t stand anything…
My favorites products are:
_l’eau cellulaire
_la crème d’eau cellulaire
_le lait démaquillant et la lotion désensibilisants
_la crème désensibilisante
_la crème vitale à la gelée royale
_l’osmoclean (a great product!)
Today they have a new great product “le concentré cellulaire”. I’ve already purchased it, but i’ve to end-up with the advanced night repair from Elisabeth Arden before using it.(I tried some samples before!!)
I could tell you so many good things about Esthederm, so please go to visit their web site at “www.esthederm.com”.
However, if you don’t manage to find it and want to try before travelling again in France, could i send to you some samples ?
Well, on another note, i will tell you more about few french brands/ french products i like.
Have a nice day,
Sophie.
P.S.:i can’t wait for you to write to me in french!!!I’m sure that your french is great !!
Glosslizard says
Hi Karen!
I love foodie scents that don’t linger, like shower gels and lotions where the scent doesn’t last too long. For all day long I don’t mind a hint of berries or vanilla, but I’d rather not smell like candy!
Hi Holly!
Some MAC products I’ve tried and loved lately are the MAC Originals lipstick Twig-Twig (a mauve-y neutral) and the MAC eyeshadow Brule (a lovely satin vanilla shade — not vanilla scented ;)).
Hi Sophie!
I love reading your posts, they’re like a vacation in a comment! I visited Paris for a week once, and had a marvelous time! 🙂
Sophie says
Hi Glosslizard!
Thanks a lot for your comment…
I really love make-up and beauty blog and it’s a great joy for me to post some notes here .
Have a good day,
your french friend beauty addict,
Sophie
Karen says
Hi Lena,
I’ve never smelled the Jaqua shower gels so thanks for the recommendation! I’ll try to find a few to sniff the next time I go to Sephora. 🙂
Karen says
Hi Sophie,
Thank you for those recommendations! I will definitely take a look at that site (I hope it’s in English, oy!). And that’s very sweet of you to offer to send me samples. If I need some I’ll let ya know. 🙂
LOL, girl, my French is awful. I barely know just enough to get by…there were so many things that I had to really improvise with when I was in France. When we were there it started raining and I had to buy an umbrella. That was hard and very funny exercise in mangling your language!
I did know enough to spend a ton of $$$ at the Annick Goutal store in Paris! I went *craaaaaazy* in there!
Anyway, I hope you’re having a good day too!
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
One good thing about the Spiced Plum scent is that it fades nicely. Big plus for me! 🙂
Ping. says
oh i love fruity smells especially mango and peaches! Body Shop have nice lotion and body butter with excellent smells that really make you wanna eat yourself. haha
Glosslizard says
I’ll check out the Spiced Plum next time I’m near a Kiehl’s, never hurts to sample! 🙂
Right now I’m loving a sample of Ole Henrickson’s African Red Tea Self Heating Body Souffle (I know, it’s a mouthful, isn’t it?) that I got from Sephora. I rub it on after my late-night shower and it’s like an electric blanket in a jar! Soooo, relaxing and comfy (not a burning sensation like Tiger Balm)! The smell is pleasant and so light as to be nearly unscented! It’s not as moisturizing as my usual lotions, but the heating effect is so lovely that I’ve been using it every night after Aikido!
Amanda says
I love smelling like food! (I also love a big ole platter of baked goods too). Especially pie based ones. -I like the vanilla ones with spices-I guess I like “fall” scents-my favorite lotions are 1)an old victoria’s secret one that was limited editon-“sugar n spice”-so cinnamon, orange, vanilla-yum. then 2)BBW “sweet cinnamon pumpkin”, and BBW 3) “vanilla bean noel”
as for shower gels, philosophy’s 3in1’s are the best! lavendar pound cake, pumpkin pie, and lemon custard. oh my. and I really want the new one-carrot cake.
and Hi Tekoa-I love ginger ale too! Karen, I’m not old (well, I’m 31) or from Canada, but I love me some ginger ale too-it’s one of my favorite drinks to order-I don’t really do caffine after the morning coffee, and I don’t like beer. So lots of time I’ll just order ginger ale if I’m in the mood for something other than water (or a mixed adult bev). Plus, I’ve mentioned before I get terrrible motion sickness and ginger helps with the nausea.
Holly says
Hi Gloslizzard,
thanks for the tips Brule sounds really nice, ive just had a little look on the website and it looks like a great neutral.
I have a day off tomorrow so think im going to go into Liverpool and buy a thing or two!!
Holly says
Hi Karen,
Wow thats quite a list thank you!
Ive made of note of everything you sugested in my diary, i just know i am going to want to buy it all when i get there! The creme colour base sounds really nice i have been looking for something like that as a good base for a while and havent found anything i really like yet so im excited about it!
I absolutely love the smolder liner i bought yesterday though, i wore at again today and it is so much better and easier to work with than the Chanel, now thats something i never thought i would say!
Karen says
Hi Ping,
I loved those Body Butters back in the day, especially the Mango one for the summer. I haven’t purchased a tub in years though, ever since they changed the formulation, made the packaging smaller and increased the price! I totally agree with you though – they do smell good enough to eat.
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
OMG, 2008 has so far been the year of Tiger Balm for me. I gotta use the extra strength one all the frickin’ time now after lifting weights or dance. I love the stuff but can’t stand how the scent get stuck in the covers, on my jammies, on El Hub when I hug him…why can’t they make it smell like roses or something?
Karen says
Hi Amanda,
I get terrible motion sickness, too, and that’s why I’ve been drinking ginger ale since I was a wee child. I’ve read that ginger pills work well at keeping motion sickness at bay, but I haven’t tried it yet.
My favorite kind is Schwepps – sorry Tekoa, no Canada Dry for me, tis too sweet!
Glosslizard says
Hi Holly!
You’ve got me sold on the Smolder liner, I’ll have to go score one now! Have fun shoppin’! 🙂
Glosslizard says
Hi Karen!
Ok, entrepeneur, there’s your money-maker! Tigress Balm! All the burn, none of the stink, available in multiple fabulous scents! (I get 10% for intellectual property!) 😉
Glosslizard says
Hi Sophie!
Pleased to make your e-acquaintance! 🙂
Karen says
LOL, Glosslizard! How hot is Tigress Balm? We can put a pic of P-Lily on the front strutting her stuff.
Maybe I’ll even make a fruit scent, too. I can market it to dance, yoga and dojos all over the country!
