Ladies, I have an awful case of kitten fever (now with makeup complications).
Because I want a second cat — err, I mean, “Tabs needs a coworker” — I’ve been surfing rescue kitty websites and bookmarking prospective kitty candidates, but whenever I run one of them by El Hub, he replies with grumble, grumble, grumble, “just feeding the CCL fire.”
And that’s not all: Tabs hasn’t been very supportive of the idea either. When I showed him the last batch of kitty resumes, he shot me a dirty look! 🙁
Whatev… The boys don’t have final say in the matter. I do.
Come hell or high water, a kitten like the one on the new Urban Decay Vegan Palette ($34) will find its way into my arms.
She’s adorable, right?
UD decorated the box with sweet animal illustrations and filled it with six shimmery shades of brown, green, blue and gray eyeshadow.
The shadows happen to be Urban Decay’s bestselling “vegan” shades — colors made without any animal byproducts (two paws up from Tabs!).
They also threw in a travel-size 24/7 Glide-On Pencil in Zero (a matte black) and a tiny bottle of shimmery champagne Sin Primer Potion.
I really like how well the colors in this palette work together, with work being the figurative word. Urban Decay included a good mix of “responsible” colors, like Twice Baked, Smog and Half Baked, and fun, glittery shades like Minx, Urb and Gunmetal. Like other UD shadows, all of these blend easily and have fantastic color payoff.
But there is one thing I wish I could change: the amount of glitter in Minx, Urb and Gunmental.
I did an eye look today using all six of the shadows, and while I like how it turned out, I felt like I spent a little too much time time dealing with the excess glitter that had fallen from my eyes down to my cheeks. I’m talking LOADS of it, yo! Some even got on my ear (although I’m still not exactly sure how it happened).
TIP: When doing glittery eye looks, start with your eyes first. That way you can remove any stray glitter before you apply your foundation, concealer and/or powder.
Having to clean up glitter after doing my eyes doesn’t ruin the palette for me, but it’s probably worth keeping in mind.

Overall, I like the Vegan palette and feel it’s a solid buy, but I like the flexibility of Urban Decay’s Naked even more. Available at Sephora and online at urbandecay.com. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B+
I Do is a DO!
So I ended up really liking that French romantic comedy I rented last night. 🙂
It’s quirky, funny, and maybe a little cheesy, but also thoroughly enjoyable. Sometimes I’m too lazy to read subtitles (so lame, but it’s the truth), but this time I didn’t mind at all. Think about it next time you’re in the mood for something light and fun.
We’re done with Wednesday, WOOT! How was yours? Didn’t it go by fast?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Okay, first off, that movie is amazing.
Second, go for it if you want to get a friend for Tabs! I got a cat-friend for my first one, and it really made my life better. It’s hard at first, but eventually they’ll get along. Once they do, you’ll realize that they really do keep each other busy and you have part of your life back. Sorta. Unless you’re like me and all you do now is take pictures of them together…
And then finally, about the makeup, (the real reason we’re here, right?) I’ll never stop loving the shades Urb and Gunmetal. So glad they have vegan options now! But too bad about the overly glittery factor…

Karen says
That’s one of the reasons why I think a kitten might be good for Tabs. His stimulus level isn’t the same as it was when he was an outdoor cat. I think he misses all the cat politics, ya know?
Did it take a long time for your cats to become friends?
Alison says
I love Urban Decay shadows, but I hate all the glitter fallout! My (super low budget) solution is to pat a piece of scotch tape over my cheeks after I’m done with my makeup to pick up all the glitter! Haha! I can’t be the only one who does this!
Suzanne says
I do this with a lint roller 😮 seems to shock my skin a bit less than tape!
.-= Suzanne’s last blog post… Physicians Formula- I love it when a plan comes together =-.
Alison says
Ah, that’s a great idea! I can’t believe I never thought to use one of the many lint rollers scattered through my house (two cats who like to shed a lot)!
Karen says
Genius! I have tons of those lint rollers all over the place (Tabs is shedding like crazy).
AtelierGal says
I own 2 UD e/s and they are so glittery that they dropped all over my cheeks. So impossible to use, any suggestions?? T.T

Karen says
Try wetting your brush first w/a fixer like MAC Fix+. It should help grab the color and keep it on the skin!
Agnes says
wow.. thats a LOT OF GLITTER! haha i kind of almost wish there wasnt as much because the colours are really pretty! Unfortunately, idont know if i can put up with the fall out so i guess this is a no for me 🙁 thanks for posting though! they are really nice to look at haha 😀

Urban Decay loves glitter. I suppose that’s OK, because it’s part of their niche (is what I tell myself) really though, I wish they’d just stop. I was playing with some of their 24/7 liners earlier and realized that even most of them have migrating chunks of shimmer. It’s a bummer, because they obviously have formulation down & I feel like they’re ruining it for a lot of us. But, like I said, it’s their niche.
Karen says
Yeah, they are definitely not shy when it comes to glitter.
Have you found any 24/7s that you like? If you haven’t tried Bourbon yet, then you must give it a spin. It’s my fave shade out of all the liners.

I like the Naked palette more, but the illustrations are so cute on this one!
I just got my rescue kitty a couple weeks ago! And surprisingly Stink took to her a lot better than I thought. Still wrestling/fighting, but its decreasing (I just spray them with a small water gun lol). But kittens = more fun! And its really cute when they sleep together 🙂
Karen says
Glad to hear that Stink is getting used to the new world order.
Hmm, if we do end up with another kitteh it looks like I’ll need to pick up a water gun…
Pinch says
Nice palette! I do realize I have all of those shades, except for Minx. Always funny to wear Urban Decay, it means free glitter on my pants! But their shades really are beautiful 🙂

Karen says
LOL regarding glitter on your pants! In my case it’s glitter on my ears, ha ha!
Rach says
FWIW, as long as you read up about how to introduce cats (it can take a few days to a few weeks, depending), it’s usually in your interest as well as the kitties’ to have at least two. My Leia-girl lost four pounds – weight she needed to lose – when we brought Benny-cat to live with her. They play constantly, sometimes curl up and sleep together, even groom each other. Sometimes it’s less “BFF” and more “detente” – it just depends on the cats. My advice: 1) buy some Feliway (a synthetic hormone you can find at most pet stores. Smells funny, but calms everyone down); 2) KEEP THEM SEPARATED at first. It’s best if they don’t even see each other for a few days. They can sniff each other from opposite sides of a door, maybe play a little paw, and gradually they’ll get used to each other. Any time we tried to rush things we ended up with fighting and growling and hiding and, worst of all, litterbox avoidance and middening (where they leave little poos to “guard” their territory due to anxiety.) You might get lucky if you have two very good-natured cats, but take it from me – it’s really upsetting if they don’t react well. I had a friend who returned his rescue cats because they weren’t immediately best buddies. So sad. It often takes time (for us, it was one week of no line-of-sight, one week of limited contact, and then, happily ever after.) Good luck!
Karen says
Thank you for this, Rach! It helps a lot!
Nina says
New kitteeh? 🙂 You know im always all for that!
The palette is nice. What ive noticed w/ my UD Palettes though is I only use them when I have the time to clean up after the fallout. Usually during the weekend or when we go out at night … because then im not in a mad rush to make it to work on time.
Ive also taken to spraying my eyeshadow brush very lightly w/ Fix+ just to keep the shadow in place as I pat it down. It helps but w/ UD there is still some fallout. I still want this palette though…
Karen says
That’s a great trick. I use that one when I remember to do it, LOL!
Lately I’ve actually had my bottle of Fix+ surgically attached to my hand. When it’s hot, a quick spritz or two feels so refreshing.
Nina says
I normally go thru a bottle of Fix+ during Houston’s hot, humid and sticky summer. I use it during winter too but not as much.
Im halfway thru my current bottle … im also alternating it with an Asian product called Hadasui spray that I got at 99 Ranch. Its pretty refreshing too esp after its sat in the refrigerator for a while…
Kim says
As usual, I like the packaging even better than what’s inside!
I love how you’re putting your foot down with those menfolk too – way to go! 🙂 I’m really excited for you and know you’ll do a great job finding Tabs a new friend. He will eventually thank you and I think Rach made a lot of good points. Our new girl is in a space of her own right now and her big sisters are showing quite a bit of interest outside the door. It’s always taken quite a bit of time for our new additions to acclimate (but they’ve all been adults). There are so many kitties that need good homes; whoever you pick will be SO lucky to have you guys! 🙂
Karen says
Hi Kim,
Congrats on the new cat! What’s her name, and what does she look like?
Kim says
Thanks! Her name is Sophie (my boys picked it) and she’s a gray tiger with some white markings on her little face and chest. She’s a total lovie and a purr-machine! We’ve become the house of gray cats. 🙂

That’s a nice palette. The shades are beautiful, but way too glittery for my taste. I love the look you did with this palette though and the packaging is so pretty!

Hey Kare, I loved how you lined the top of the eye with minx, did you do that with a wet brush or did you place it over the eyeliner. it looks beautiful?
Karen says
Hey Vero!
That’s Zero liner w/Minx smudged onto the outer half and Urb on the inner half.
Shannon says
I’ve definitely had problems with UD glitter fallout in the past. It’s not too bad (well, not quite as bad) when I remember to tap the brush to get rid of some of the excess powder before applying, but it can be a pain when some of my other tried-and-true shadows are so well-behaved!
Karen says
Which UD shades are your tried-and-true colors? Mine are the shadows in the Get Baked palette, which is probably my fave UD palette of all time.
Suji says
I kinda want this just for the packaging! haha. I already have the 3 shades on the bottom row from other palettes. the glitter annoys me too, but it looks pretty 😛
Karen says
The packaging is super cute! The illustrations really sell this one.
T says
Your hair is super cute!
I like your shirt. Can I ask where you got it? I love the ruffles on the sleeves.
Karen says
Thanks! I just got it highlighted again last week, so it’s a little lighter (for summer!).
As for the shirt — I got it at Marshall’s for like $15. 🙂
Joy says
Hum, I will have to check this one out on my next Sephora excursion. Maybe I’m weird (okay, I know I’m weird…) but I don’t mind glitter fall-out. For some reason it always ends up looking better, and adding a bit of sparkle (pun totally intended), to my look that I never can quite achieve on my own. But I really liked the other UD palette…
Also, go for the rescue cat! You will not regret it. 🙂 We have 3 dogs and 5 cats that are all rescue. Life was much easier after we got the second. Our first cat, from BDH before dear husband, was equally content as a lone cat. She loved the second but he was a bit too playful for her at times. We got a bonded pair as the third/fourth which made it even easier since one of the three others would play with the second. And the second dog (both ADH) made the first dog much easier to deal with. Anyway, I agree with Rach to read up a lot on introductions and not expect them to be best buddies at first. It may take awhile for them to adjust. We have completely lucked out and our patented intro for all the animals has been “here’s your brother/sister” and putting them on the floor. We’ve never had an issue even though we’ve never followed the guidelines. We’ve also had to introduce another puppy (who died) and numerous fosters/long-term petsitting animals. I’m a firm believer in following your gut regarding this. We’ve never had to do the slow introduction route but we have had to help navigate food/water from time to time to make sure the new ones are getting what they need. And something I’ve actually done since the very first cat: “Mommy and Me” time. I spend 30 minutes every day one-on-one with each animal. Even DH rotates the cats through his office when he gets home to make sure they each have some time with him.
Karen says
Oh, you are so lucky to have all those wonderful animals in your life!
I have a feeling if we do end up getting a kitten (really, it’s mostly up to Tabs) that I’ll need to do similar “Mommy and Me” time. Tabs is very needy, requires a set amount of loving at certains times of the day. Of course it’s always on his terms, LOL!
Advah says
The colours are beautiful but I agree, UD is generally too g littery for me. I do like a bit of glitter in my eyeshadows but with UD I’m always very aware of the fact I’ve got glitter on my eyes…
As for cats, we’ve always had 3 cats at home. Then recently my parents rescued a kitten and decided there wasn’t much difference between 3 and 4. So they also took my sister’s cat when she moved, and decided there wasn’t much difference between 4 and 5. So they’re about to also get my aunt’s cat. But they’ve promised to stop there, apparently it’s becoming difficult to find space on the sofas with all those tigers napping all day. 🙂
Karen says
I have a feeling that’s the same exact reasoning I’m going to eventually use, LOL!
I guess cats are like potato chips? You can’t stop at just one…
Rae says
Hurrah! You now what I’ll be doing this weekend 😀 I Do it is!
The Vegan palette is pretty…. but glittery fallout just kills UD palettes for me. With my fair skin, I look like a disco ball — even if I do try to sweep it away!

Yeah, there was glitter all over the place. I felt like I just escaped a disco…
Jeni says
I can’t wait until Tabs gets a new buddy/assistant to boss around! As much as I love pictures of makeup, I think I love pictures of cats even more! When I had just one cat he seemed pretty happy, but he was way more happy once I brought a friend home for him (and then another).

Oh wow, three kitties. 🙂 Was it hard to introduce the new kitties into the mix?
Phyrra says
Totally go for a new kitty 🙂 Though I’m having to fight the urge and not get another poodle.
I hate the glitter fallout from UD. The shades I tend to like the best are like the deluxe shadows – Frigid, Fishnet, and Sellout. I just get the worst fallout from UD, worse than any mineral makeup.
Like the look you did with the vegan palette though 🙂

I’ve heard poodles are really smart! Do you have one?
Phyrra says
I do 🙂 I have a standard. You can see pix of her here:

I’ve been thinking very hard about getting another standard or perhaps a miniature, but I really love the standards as they’re very laid back. They’re definitely intelligent, reputably the 2nd smartest dog out there 🙂
Phaedra, my baby, has been a dream to train.

Seven cats! You are living the dream.

Love that look!!
Regarding the second kitty: I really hope Tabs will accept her, some cats just really want to be lone kitties. :o)
Karen says
I have a feeling he might have a hard time sharing his human assistants with others. I think it might help for him to have another cat around, though. Now that he’s an indoor kitty, I think he misses the stimulus of neighborhood cat politics.

I haven’t! I’ll add that to my list. 🙂
How have you been? It’s been a while!
auroragyps says
Urb is amazing. I have it in one of UD’s old Face Cases and I need to replace it. However, since I already have 3/6 shadow colors in other palettes & 2 zero liners, I’m going to skip the Vegan Palette.
As for Tabs and a new kitty in the house, just tell the guys that it will be Tab’s minion and maybe they’ll like the idea better. 😉 Actually, I hope to get my female cat, who will be 12 the end of this month, her own minion by this Fall. I think we could both use some new blood around this place and I’d like to have a kitten aged cat at least once in my life (Lady Zeal was 6 months when we got her). I cross my fingers that it will work out and not be too hard on them both or on me, but I have a tiny studio apt., so I can’t really separate them for long periods of time. Hopefully a large dog crate will work when I’m out and for short periods when I’m home and want some one-on-one kitty time with either of them.
Fingers crossed for you and me both on the kitty front.
Sobriquet says
Six paws up (if you include mine) from this household on the new fluffy kitten. I adopted 2 of them 12 years ago from the same litter and they fight all the time, so the “getting along” thing is kind of a crap shoot no matter where they come from. ^-^
KellyK. says
Get a dog! My yorkie is so awesome! Small like a cat, but sweeter!
Sharon says
I have two cats — one is nine, the other eleven — and got the younger one as a kitten to keep Mischief company. She was literally drooping around my apartment, grieving, after my elderly kitty died. Mischief was great with the kitten right from the start although I did keep them separated in different rooms for a while when I was not at home, and she was happy to have a playmate. OTOH, when my father moved in with me five years ago he brought his cat with him, and Mischief wouldn’t stop attacking the poor thing. I eventually had to give the cat away after my father went into the nursing home, felt terrible about it but it had been over a year by that point with the attacks continuing, and it was no way for that cat to live. She went to a good home with no other cats.
Anyway, I think a kitten is a great idea, and please do post pics when you bring it home!!
Julia says
It took mine a few months to really click, but it happens! Just be careful about what cat you choose. If you can really tell they’re clashing, i.e., one terrorizes the other, it’s not a good fit. Usually within a week or two you can tell how it’ll be.
Good luck to you!

when i’m using a glittery shadow, i take a magazine subscription card (i always seem to have a million lying around random places) or a 3×5 note card, (or whatever smallish piece of paper… even a square of TP will do) and hold it over the cheek on the side i’m doing. if i need both hands, i use a little scotch tape to keep it in place. viola, zero fallout!!

I laughed out loud when I read that line about kitty resumes. I love Tabs!
I adopted Rock n Roll and Jazz when they were kittens. I wanted them to grow up together. The first day I brought Jazz home, Rock n Roll hated him. She was 3 months and he was 5 months. I kept them in separate rooms, and I would crack the door a little so they could see each other. After 2 days, they started getting along.
