Y’all want this party started, right?
Y’all want this party started quickly, right?
Bobbi Brown sure knows how to throw a holiday party. Her latest soirée features four entertaining colors and two of my favorite things: chocolate and gold.
Today the limited edition $45 Chocolate & Gold Eye Paint Palette, one of two quads in Bobbi’s new Party Collection, took me on a stroll down memory lane that started with this classic house hit…
WARNING: It’s always a good idea to stretch before dancing to this song
Chocolate & Gold happens to be a great dance partner! The shadows, while fabulous on their own, get along great with others and flat-out love to be layered.
Which reminds me — do you remember the moment you realized that you could wear more than one eyeshadow on your lids at a time? Better yet, when you figured out that you could even layer those shades together?
GASP! That’s a moment that changed my makeup world forever. 🙂
Flash forward to today. I was just fooling around this morning when I applied the bronzy gold from the Chocolate & Gold Palette (at the top in the pic below) on top of the darker black and gold shadow on the right.
I like how it turned out.
Layering colors is a great way to create some cool effects, like smokey transitions and gradients, and an easy way to upgrade your makeup game. Plus, it’s just good old fashioned fun to smudge colors together, if for no better reason than to see what happens.
Today I ended up with a soft and shimmery brown, black and gold gradient.
Ooh, glitter…
Despite the big honkin’ glitter grains in these shadows, the powders remain surprisingly fluffy and, consequently, a bit difficult (for me) to control, so I used a flat, firm eyeshadow brush today to press the powders into my skin.
To mellow out each of the colors, blur them together and smoothly transition from one shade to the next, I blended out the edges between the shades with a fluffy, domed eyeshadow brush.
What a fun quad! — and it would be even more fun at $35. 🙂 Just make sure you have a couple of brush options on hand to avoid getting glitter all over your cheeks.
PRICE: $45

I’m calling the following picture, “Cranky Tabby and Girl with Linebacker Shoulders.”
It’s not exactly my favorite picture of myself (not my best angle, LOL!), but I couldn’t resist posting it because of Tabs’ cranky expression.
At the time I thought he was napping in his cat tower; I had no idea he was right behind me!
Apparently, he just couldn’t accept being out of the shot…
Yup, such is life when you live/work with a cat diva.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. I hope you’re having a good Tuesday so far. Did you do anything fun with your makeup today? What are you wearing on your eyes?
Makeupandbeautyjunkie says
Pretty! Yay…for Bobbi b!
Karen says
Thanks, love. 🙂 Glad you’re liking Bobbi’s new palette.
Appu says
You look gorgeous, Karen! The quad looks like its a lot of fun…love all the shades in there. I’m wearing Benefit’s Creaseless cream shadow in Busy Signal all over my lid with just some kohl n mascara 😀
Karen says
Hi Appu!
Thanks. 🙂 Aren’t those Creaseless Creams the best? Do you wear them alone or layer primer beneath?
Hboo says
Lloyd Christmas is looking pretty snazzy these days!
Karen says
Aww, thanks. I’m getting him trimmed on Friday! He’s been a little out of control lately, LOL!
PinkGlitter says
I love shadows like these but hate glitter fallout. I love your sequin top btw!
Karen says
The fallout can be a pain. I like do my eye makeup first so that I can clean up any stray mess. 🙂
Oooh! So that sequin top was a total steal. I got it at Marshalls for $12!
Sam says
I feel like Tabs is thinking something about how he’s upset that you’re in the spotlight 🙂 This look is so beautiful on you!
Karen says
I think he’s just so used to being the star of the show, LOL! When he’s not the center of attention he gets really, really fussy. 🙂
Have you had the chance to play with any of Bobbi’s new holiday items?
Heidi says
I also went for the Benefit Creaseless Creams today. R.S.V.P. and Stiletto. Then I lined with the black pencil that came in the Scene Queen set that Benefit put out awhile back.
Karen says
That was a good kit, that Scene Queen.
I find black eyeliner tends to get the thumbs up from the resident kitty model. 🙂 Cats just LOOOOVE their liner. I’m sure Missy approved.
peach_ says
Yesss, warm toned colors! I’m not sure if I can resist a gold and chocolate combo despite fallout. I am loving your eye looks lately and wishing I had the skills to make mine look as good!
Karen says
Hi Peach,
You can *totally* do this look. It’s really, REALLY easy. Just layer on those two shades, blend like crazy and then pop some liner on your waterlines. Add a few coats of mascara and you’re done.
a beauty loft says
Ahhhh for a minute I thought this was the return of her chocolate palette she did 5 or 6 years ago! But these look like some gorgeous colors!
Love the sequin tank, btw 🙂
Karen says
Thanks! I got it for a steal at Marshalls.
Have you had the chance to see Bobbi’s Party collection in person yet? It’s really pretty.
LoveVex says
Oh goodness. Just the other day as I was getting ready for bed my husband looked at me and said, “Huh, you are right. You do have football player shoulders.”
I’m still mad I wasn’t a teen in the 80’s. I have naturally big hair and apparently built in shoulder pads.
Karen says
As a teen who lived through the late ’80s, let me tell you, IT WAS ROUGH. The hair, the terrible, terrible clothing… It was not the easiest time to be awkward and 13, LOL!
lovevex says
But at least everyone would’ve been awkward with me! Instead, sleek shiny pin straight hair and mini skirts were en vogue when I was growing up and I came from a conservative family and a mom who had no idea what to do with my lion’s mane. Think a golden brown version of Anne Hathaway in the Princess Diaries pre-makeover.
It’s cool though – volume’s back and me and my hair are in a truce!
Chris25 says
Pretty quad. I love that top, btw.
Speaking of cranky kitties, you wanna know what Rocky does to get me up in the mornings (to serve her breakfast of course)? She shoves her little backside in my face.
Nipping, smacking and shoving no longer work on me. So she’s brought out the big guns….haha.
Karen says
At least she isn’t launching off your bladder!
I remember reading somewhere that when kitties show you their butts it means they trust you. Tabs is ALWAYS flashing his backside. I think it’s more so he can show off his kitty balls, though, haha.
Patty says
Karen, you may want to conceal your answer from Tabs, but wondering if Tabs is neutered? I told my boy kitties that they had their tonsils out. ; )
Karen says
Hi Patty,
LOL, I hope your kitty boys got lots of good treats after their “tonsil” trip.
Yup, Tabs has been neutered. He still displays a lot of dominant behavior like marking things (and people!) by rubbing his cheeks against them. Then there’s the whole showing off his kitty balls thing, haha.
Ruby17 says
love the colors, Karen! Also, you look absolutely gorgeous and glowing! is that from the make-up or is that the result of keeping up with your work-out? 🙂 love love love the look!
Tabs is just funny in the background 😀
Karen says
Aw, thanks Ruby. I think it’s the makeup. 🙂 I’m wearing a new combo here: CoverFX Skin Prep Foundation Primer, MAC Studio Sculpt Foundation and Tarte Provocateur Pressed Mineral Powder.
Tabs is quite the camera hog, isn’t he?
Beverly says
I LOVE that Chocolate & Gold palette, but my budget is saying “OUCH”!!! I hope I won’t have to, but I may have to “pass” on this one….
Adrienne says
I’m not very familiar with Bobbi Brown, how are these “eye paints” different from regular eyeshadows? They look like mineral shadows from the pictures, but the term “paint” suggests otherwise.
Also I love your lip color in the cranky tabby picture, lol! Is that from this collection?
Karen says
Hi Adrienne,
I’m wearing Chanel Velvet Matte Rouge in 36 Caline. Here’s more info on it:

Christy says
Lovely! Am wearing the MAC Berry Crush Dazzlesphere, with Roasted Chestnut all over the lid and Pearl on the inner third. Roasted Chestnut is also dark brown with gold sparkles 😉
Karen says
Sounds really pretty, Christy!
Jenny says
WOAH I love your outfit here!!
Karen says
Thanks! It’s a top I got for a steal at Marsalls over the weekend. I think it was $12. 🙂
DalaLuz says
So pretty! And I really like the palette too 😉
Kajal Couture says
I like the palette, but I love how you are rocking that sparkle top! I think I am ready for holiday glitz and glam!
Vonvon says
Nice dress, Karen!
Yes, love layering eyeshadows sometimes, and I find that a lot of Bobbi Brown eyeshadows are great when layered.
It’s Wed afternoon here now. Started the day attendng my daughter’s first school assembly. Then went around doing some errands.
Makeup-wise, only Stila Honey shadow pot all over my lids, Guerlain Meteorites in 02 Pink Fresh, the old version on my cheeks, and MAC Riveting Rose lipstick for the fall glam feel!
Was in a rush this morning.
Nina says
Karen, ive said it before and ill say it again. You are gorgeous, inside and out! <3
that palette is pretty, and seems to be versatile. i need to check this out too.
i have a question — what is that domed eyeshadow brush you are using in 5th picture?
tuesday was a green day – i layered mac humid eyeshadow over that green mufe aqua cream. today is blue day – same deal diff colors. its mufe's blue aqua cream and mac's deep truth e/s.
im being lazy w/ my eye makeup these days bec … i wear specs daily now. ive been told by my eye doc to lay off the contacts. 🙂
Ithfifi says
I got this in silver and onyx and the only real way I could get any colour pay off was to wear it wet, not something I do often but once I had I fell in love with the palette all over again 😀
Your looking fabulous as usual!
Kim says
This does sound like a fun quad, especially with all the glitter! 🙂 I loved your linebacker comment – it’s definitely all in the angle and so worth it to see Pouty, Stalker Tabs. HAHA!
