How do you feel about cucumbers? More specifically, how do you feel about cucumbers in your hair? Yes To, purveyors of organic fruit and veggie-inspired hair and skin products, hopes you’ll say yes to ‘em.
When I spotted this bottle of Yes To Cucumbers Color Care Shampoo ($9) at Target on a recent trip, I immediately recalled the bomb-@ss Yes To Cucumbers conditioner I tried a while back, so I figured what the hay and threw the bottle in my cart.
I’ve been looking for something interesting (and much less expensive) to alternate with the Kerastase Chroma Sensitive Cleansing Balm I’ve been loving for a few months, and that’s what I hoped this cool cucumber would be.
I like the list of ingredients, which Yes To says are 99.8% natural. It does contain, among other things, cucumber (no big surprise there), as well as aloe, olive, sweet almond oil, jojoba, green tea and algae, and it’s petroleum-, paraben- and SLS-free.
Tabs also wanted me to point out that it’s cruelty-free, and for that, if nothing else, he gives it two big paws up (emphasis on big, as he’s a husky boy).
First things first: I love, LOVE how it smells — like chilled, freshly cut cucumber slices. If I didn’t know better, I’d be tempted to eat it (NOTE: it is NOT edible).
But shampoos are meant for more than just sniffing, right? So I took it into the shower with me, and that’s where things kinda took a wrong turn.
The problem is that it hurts like heck when it accidentally gets in my eyes.
Now, I’ve gotten shampoo into my eyes before, but this was something different. We’re talking ouch! It really stung.
I was fine after I flushed my eyes, but I learned one thing right away: keep those peepers shut nice and tight when using this shampoo…which, truth be told, I probably won’t be reaching for that often, and not just because of the eye thing.
It didn’t really do a good job of actually cleaning my hair, even though I did the whole shampoo-lather-rinse-repeat routine. After everything, I still felt leftover hairspray and gel in my mop.
As for detangling, fuggedaboutit. My hair normally has lots of knots (I’m so knotty, LOL!), and it still did after I’d finished using this.
I really wanted to like Yes To Cucumbers Color Care Shampoo more than I do. It smells great, looks good on paper and doesn’t weight down my hair, but I think as a finished product, it could use a little work.

Founded in 2006, Yes To has a bunch of different hair and body care products made with organic fruits and vegetables, to which they add a special mineral elixir derived from the Dead Sea to nourish and hydrate naturally, and these folks say yes to just about anything that goes well with salad — Yes To Carrots, Yes To Tomatoes, Yes To Cucumbers, Yes To Baby Carrots, Yes To Blueberries, Citrus, Melon, Mint…and I’m sure I’m forgetting something.
So long, Thursday! Hello Friday!
So how was your afternoon? No complaints here. I didn’t experience any PMS-fueled bouts of rage or spontaneously cry, and that’s always a good thing. 🙂
One thing that put a little pep in my step today was trying some scents from a French fragrance line called Atelier Cologne.
It’s carried at Neiman Marcus stores, and it looks like they also sell it online. Have you tried any of their scents before? The brand’s fairly new to me.
I like the imagery they use to describe their scents. The picture with the marble dressing table above is for one called Grand Neroli ($155 for a 6.7-oz. bottle, eek! I just tried a sample). Of course, I would like a picture with a porcelain Siamese. 🙂
I put a few drops on my wrist early this morning and eight hours later the scent was still going strong. That’s always a good thing with a scent you like.
The scent’s official notes are…
Top notes — Moroccan neroli (an oil from the bitter orange tree flower), lemon, sicilian bergamot, petitgrain (another oil from the bitter orange tree, but this time from green twigs)
Middle notes — Persian galbanum (a gum resin), moss, and birch leaves
Base notes — Clean musk, white amber, and vanilla from Madagascar
I think it’s a very comfy, girly scent. If I breathe it in and close my eyes, I’m having a good hair day and getting a great big hug from my mom.
I’ve only been wearing it part of one day, and I’ve already fallen for it.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Ouch! I hate when shampoo stings my eyes!
Lately I’ve been loving Organix shampoos and conditioners, another cruelty-free brand that I find at drugstores, Target, Kmart, etc. I alernate between the Teatree Mint and the Cherry Blossom Ginseng and my hair is very happy so far.
Took Mom out for her birthday today. We drove out to Calistoga and had lunch at Sarafornia. It was so good! Oh, and Mom loves her new purse.
Now I’m just relaxing, watching the season premier of Project Runway. I swore I was fed up after last season, but I can not say no to reality competition shows!

I’m a big fan of Yes to Carrots shampoo and conditioner!

Owie! I’m sorry you had to endure the most hated of all shower crimes! There is nothing worse than shampoo or soap in your eyes!
I went to the doctor today! Wasn’t exactly fun, but y’know, I had to go. The only mildly fun part for me was getting my blood drawn. I’m slightly masochistic in that I just love watching my blood doing the whole roller coaster thing with the butterfly needle. I’ve probably just made people with Aichmophobia and/or Hemaphobia shudder.
Currently, I’m baby-sitting Zena as my parents need sleep and a whining dog isn’t conducive to sleep. I’m the insomniac so I’M stuck with her. Of course, the thunderstorm has passed now and the tranquilizer has finally taken effect so it’s not so much baby-sitting as listening to her snow loudly at the top of the steps. The things I do for my dog.

Ouch! Sounds painful, Karen.
Speaking of French, I’m going to Paris this weekend! So excited 😀

yep, i had the same experience w/ that shampoo. it stings like no other … i finished the bottles of shampoo and conditioner up and moved on. :-/
the perfume sounds interesting … but just how girly is it? the girliest i ever went was d&g light blue …

Some people say that they prefer the conventional/regular beauty products over organic ones because it is more effective and capable in doing what it’s suppose to do compared to organic products.
Jennifer says
You should use Biosilk in your hair after you shampoo and concition it !!

What a let-down after how much you liked the conditioner. On the performance front, that is definitely my gripe about a lot of “natural” products. They just don’t work as well as my chemical laden faves. 🙁
No experience with Atelier, but Grand Neroli sounds lovely. And I like the porcelain Siamese, too. 🙂

Yikes!
Just wondering what you do with products that don’t work for you? Do you give them away or donate them?

Shame about YTC. I was eyeing the line at Rite Aid and I wondered if I should try it. Guess I shouldn’t. I am finishing up David Babai for Wildaid Amplifying shampoo. It’s super duper expensive, but I love the way it makes my hair feel. A cheaper fave is Renpure Organics Body & Shine.

This looks like it smells yummy, but don’t think I can ever give up my new fave shampoo Organix Cherry Blossom Ginseng. Works great, smells great, and the price is great! lol
Adria says
I actually like the YTC shampoo, and I find that I have no problem with tangles (and I have VERY tangly hair). Maybe it’s because I have learned over the years not to pile my hair on top of my head and wash my hair that way. Have you tried that technique, Karen? Maybe that will help.
That being said, the YTC conditioner is NOT good. If it wasn’t for my Organix Moroccan Argan Oil that I use after washing, my hair would be sooooo dry.
I will be moving overseas soon, so I will have to find another brand if I can’t find either YTC or Organix at the PX!

This brand is so hit and miss with me! I always want to love it, especially the shampoo, because I haven’t yet found natural (or mostly natural) hair products that I love. Has anyone tried the Fekkai natural shampoo?
Agent 003 says
I’ve tried the Say Yes To Tomatoes facial moisturizer for oily skin and it worked ok. I’m still not entirely sure if it caused any breakouts, but it would be nice to find more organic products that can perform. Do you have any idea what ingredient may have caused your eyes to burn?

Such a letdown that this shampoo is no good :[ I’m always on the hunt for a really great color care shampoo. Thanks for reviewing it!

In regards to tangles, do you brush your hair before you shower? It made a big difference to me. I get out a lot of loose hair so shed less in my overworked drain. Someone else mentioned wash method and they help too. Forr my THICK long hair I center part in then apply shampoo to the roots in sections, first the top then the back left, back right. It’s a way to reach the roots all over (roots are almost always the only bit that needs washing. Leave the length of your hair down and the shampooey water will slide down it when you rinse for a quick cleanse. Rinsing has to be done carefully also. I also comb conditioner through before rinsing it out and catch a lot of shed hairs then (then because I’m gross I put them on the top of the shower door and sometimes forget to put in trash). Anyway I don’t usually get tangles with this method.
But your hair looks faboo on the other post I see today when you’re wearing it down. FABOO
Karen says
Hi Futuralon,
I do. I comb it first with a wide-tooth comb and then I go in with a brush.
Aww, and thanks re: the hair. I actually just chopped a couple inches off and got bangs.
Alice says
Oh yes. I got Yes to Cucumbers in my eye once. Too afraid to ever use it again after that. Burned like I’d never felt before, for a few minutes even as I rinsed.
Instant Karma says
That’s so disappointing! One of the shampoos in my rotation stings like crazy — and the burn lasts for a full minute or two. I tend not to reach for it often because I’m slightly afraid of it, haha.
My hair tangles really easily, too; I have a LOT of fine, wavy hair. My solution is by Suave for Kids, oddly enough. Sure, it may come in a bottle with a purple octopus on the front (I have to admit, it’s pretty cute), but it works really well and smells amazing (apple scented). My boyfriend always comments on how good his pillows smell after I stay over, which is kind of adorable, lol. It’s really cheap, too, and one bottle lasts for ages. I use a couple spritzes after I wash my hair, and if my hair is really tangled at the end of the day (damn you, windy days), I just spray a bit directly onto my comb. I don’t know how I would deal with my hair without it!

Re: organic hair care that actually works, I really like Burt’s Bees Very Voluminous shampoo and conditioner. It smells good and gets the job done. On the second day my hair gets a little oily, but other than that they work good! They’re at the drugstore too.
