Just how pigmented is vibrant orange Sula Beauty Lipstick in Awake Till Sunrise ($8)? Well, if I were ever going to scribble a note on a bathroom mirror with a tube of lipstick, I’d use it, because “YOU’RE MINE FOREVER!!” scrawled on a mirror in sheer baby pink just doesn’t have the same impact.
This — THIS! — is what I’ve been hoping for from the Sula Beauty line. Creamy reddish coral Awake Till Sunrise totally hits it out of the park (think MAC Hibiscus), and I wouldn’t be surprised if it and the other lipsticks in the line skipped right past “Go” on their way to the Drugstore Makeup Hall of Fame. 🙂
Not only did Sula peg the price at a reasonable $8, they omitted the parabens and phthalates, refrained from testing on animals and loaded this particular shade with so much pigment that it could easily pass for department store.
Awake Till Sunrise even feels more expensive than it is, with its creamy, moisturizing and slightly thick texture. For a minute there, I almost forgot it wasn’t a Chanel Rouge Coco.
Sula also decided to leave out any added scents and flavors, choosing instead to focus on the product’s appearance and texture.
Wear time is the only area in which I’d call Awake Till Sunrise average, and considering the color and price, I’m cool with that. As long as I’m not eating or drinking anything, it’ll last about four hours on my lips, but as soon as I take a drink or a bite of something, it gets up and leaves. In other words, if you’re looking for a lipstick that you can apply once in the morning and not worry about for the rest of the day, this might not be it.
Other than pretty typical wear time for a lipstick, Awake Till Sunrise shines like a drugstore gem, and I can’t wait to wear it with a cat eye liner look (and to try some of the other shades).
PRICE: $8 each (eight shades to choose from)
AVAILABILITY: Available now at Ulta stores and also online

All Quiet on the Novato Front
It was eerily quiet this morning when Tabs and I stepped outside for our walk… I’d forgotten that school was back in session, and all of the kids in the neighborhood have gone back to class.
Oh, well. I’m still in deep denial about summer being almost over. I feel totally unprepared to face another winter (or even fall), and I keep trying to remind myself that fall also means I get to wear boots again, which I love. I’ve been looking for a pair that’ll go over my knee, even though I suspect I’ll look like a tiny little pirate with ’em on. 🙂
Eh, life is short, right? Might as well wear the crazy pirate boots while I can.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

I’ve been waiting for this review, and am so so glad you loved it! It’s definitely a dead ringer for the color of those tomatoes at the farmers’ market 🙂 it’s also such a flattering shade on all skintones and the price definitely seals the deal. I’m tempted to pick up a second even….

LOVE! It really reminds me of Illamasqua Ignite lipstick in terms of colour and finish, what a great drugstore find!

Awesome color! It looks juicy, too. And I say yes to pirate boots…love them and live in them during the winter myself!

I’m okay with bright pinks and reds. But bright oranges, not there yet. And i sooo love the look of fall with the boots. I’d like to see a look of the day from you.

Russian Spy is another lovely color from this collection. It’s a pink-toned purple that I think would work for a variety of skintones. (And what a great name.)
I don’t think Awake would look nearly as good on me as it does on you! I’m tempted to try it now, though.

What an awesome shade of lipstick, Karen! And I love the sound of these – unscented and unflavoured? Count me in.

So funny that you posted this today! I have this same shade of the Sula lipstick. I live in the Bay Area too, Karen! So I left my purse in my car a few days ago for too long, and it was a hot day. I had a NARS lipstick, Elizabeth Arden lipstick, and this lipstick in the purse. (Actually, the NARS and EA lipsticks were Dulce Vita and Watermelon – shades your blog turned me on to!) I was almost certain they must have melted – but they were fine! So was my mini Benefit erase paste (it melted and was no longer all pretty in the pot, but whatevs). I guess this Sula lipstick must have been all the way at the bottom of my purse (I have way too many lip products in my tiny purse). I didn’t notice it until today – totally melted, with about half of it stuck to the inside of the lid 🙁
I guess the more natural ingredients make it more melt-able? Hmm. After seeing your post I’m wondering if I got a bad one to begin with – mine is definitely dry and just not the best texture – I definitely need a good lip balm underneath. I’m amazed your swatch has shine because mine is nearly matte! I can forgive all of those flaws for the beautiful red-orange hue though <3
Hope you find my little story amusing. LOL.

I love that colour, it totally brightens up your whole face. Such a perfect summer shade and I love how pigmented it looks. I noticed Jen mentioned it looks a bit like Illamasqua Ignite and I agree, though a creamier version.

Tiny pirate.,..priceless. You are sooo funny. Your blog is the only beauty blog I laugh out loud too. You rock!

This looks similar to the new Poppy King for J. Crew lipstick. It’s supposed to be “universally flattering”. I like it so far. Very moisturizing. However, my husband says I look like I’m wearing “old lady lipstick”- I’m 38 and he’s 40, so we’re not young, for reference. Yesterday, when I was setting up my classroom, an “old lady” came in to volunteer and evidently he’s right- she could have been wearing the J. Crew lipstick! 😉

that coral-toned lipstick looks beautiful on you. nice reviews, too. 🙂

Super cute and a great neutral. Plus, they are pleather! No animals harmed, Tabs will be proud.

Oh my goodness this color looks sooo amazing on you! Yay for us brown girls getting to rock warm orangy-reds! I wonder what this would look like under Evolution Revolution lipglass?!?

Would you do a side-by-side comparison with MAC Hibiscus?

I recently bought a Sula lipstick at Ulta. It’s pink/magenta color. I love how smooth the application is and it is not drying at all. Plus, what a good price!
Ana says
Omg the one I bought (same shade as Karen) is so drying and funky in texture (see my post above). I think I’ll just buy another, hopefully I just got a bad one. I can always return it to Ulta it’s still no good I guess. I love the way you and Karen describe the texture- that’s what I want!!! Just my luck I guess :-/
Melody says
Oh wow. I’m glad they delivered on this formula! I’ll definitely be giving this brand a second look now.
