No, that’s not hot mustard up there, but it’s something no less exhilarating. I can honestly say I’ve never seen anything like it before (this was the last thing that prompted me to say that). It’s an exfoliator…FOR HAIR!
I really expected the new Redken Nature’s Rescue Refining Sea Polish ($19 for a 3.4-oz. tube) to be a gimmick, but it turned out to be kind of brilliant instead. I mean, we already exfoliate our face, bod and our gnarly @ss feet (gurl, don’t make me bust out my heel buffer/parmesan cheese grater on you, and don’t pretend like you don’t know what I’m talking about 🙂 ), so why stop with our hair?
To use, just apply the non-foaming Sea Polish paste after shampooing but before conditioning, massaging it gently into your hair section by section. The product contains exfoliating grains of pumice which, when massaged into the hair, scrub away any built-up hair products, grit and grime your shampoo may have missed, while also refining and polishing.
I the scent too. This is weird, but it reminds me of lemon rinds spritzed with Bobbi Brown’s Beach perfume.
So does Sea Polish work? I think so.
Redken claims it’s formulated for all hair types, safe for color-treated hair and can be used daily, although I’ve been busting it out just once or twice a week (it’s an extra step for which I don’t always have the time). I probably should use it more often, though, because my hair does look shinier and better behaved when I’m done.
Sea Polish is one of four products from the Redken Nature’s Rescue Haircare Line released last December. In addition to Sea Polish, there’s also a shampoo, a conditioner and a hair perfume (!). The products have a beachy vibe, and they’re free of parabens, sulfates and silicones, too.
Sea Polish isn’t cheap ($19), but it might be worth a splurge if you feel like your ‘do needs a deep clean.

Wise words…
Isn’t that the best saying, evah? It belongs on a bumper sticker. I wish Tabs or I could take credit for it, but it was another diva, RuPaul, who tweeted it earlier today.
So how’s your Wednesday coming along? I’m getting ready for a quick workout with Jillian Michaels [INSERT TEARS OF JOY/PAIN HERE].
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Yet another product I need to try… sigh.

Weeeeiiird. I saw this at Ulta recently and I totally thought it was either for face, body or scalp – not hair strands itself! I totally would’ve thought that ‘exfoliating’ your hair would equal frizziness.
Alice says
That is an absolutely fabulous pic of Tabs.
So basically the polish is like a clarifying shampoo, only without chemicals, would you say? Nifty. I might look into it, because my scalp can get pretty dried out.
Lillie says
I don’t use much product in my hair so I didn’t buy this, but I do have the other three products from the line. My scalp was always super itchy, and I finally figured out it was allergies some of the ingredients in shampoo and conditioner. With this line, I am itch free!! I highly recommend it for sensitive scalp peeps!
Appu says
Interesting! I would love to give it a shot…if only they came with smaller sizes. If my hair doesn’t like it, I’ll be stuck with the big sized tube.
Vijaya says
That’s such an interesting idea. My scalp can be easily irritated though, so I’m not sure I’ll try this. Plus, I get the feeling it’ll make my hair fluffy.

this seems pretty neat! the other products sound nice too. hope you have a good workout!

Everytime I see a pic with Tabs, the baby voice comes into my head and I’m saying to myself “awwww… He’s too ‘tweet, oh!” Lol … Great review will definitely keep an eye out for this, and the perfume for hair sounds interesting!
Rae says
Huh! This sounds crazy (but awesome, of course). I’ll have to keep an eye out for it! Thanks for the review, lovely 🙂
Makeup Morsels says
Wow, I would’ve never even thought of this. I use a clarifying shampoo right now, so this sounds like it would be good for me!
Amber says
Sounds gimmicky, but I think my scalp might like it after the winter it’s just been through!
Meghan says
Oh wow that is awesome!! 🙂
Kristina says
I’m slightly concerned that this might be stripping color of my locks?:\

Does anyone have any idea why/how this works? Exfoliators work by sloughing off the top layer of dead skin, but all of your hair is dead and it has no layers like skin. So is there any explanation of the science behind it?
Karen says
Hi Kendall,
I suspect that most of the benefit I see and feel is due to removing product buildup more than anything else, and I think it does that very well.

A very inexpensive way to get a similar effect is by mixing about 1 – 1 1/2 tsp of baking soda in with your shampoo. Your hair get SUPER shiny, soft, and clean. I usually bring a little bowl into my shower and mix the baking soda with the normal amount of shampoo and it’ll thicken up but just wash your hair as you usually would. It’s fantastic.

Wow that’s really different! I’m very curious about whether it is better for your hair, and scalp than clarifying shampoos which can sometimes have fairly harsh detergents.
Interesting!

I picked this up, as well as the Radiant Sea Spray. They’re both really nice.I particularly like the polish because I only wash my hair every 5 to 7 days, so this is a good way for me to get rid of any build up.

I’d be afraid this might rough up the cuticle of the hair, hmm. I might check it out, though, after your review!
RuPaul is so fabulous. Are you watching this season of RuPaul’s Drag Race?
Annabella Freeman says
I’ve used something similar from Korres and I don’t know what it does to my hair but it always feels better afterwards and more bouncy. Exfoliation is the key to happiness..well mine anyway x
Karen says
One of these days I’m gonna get that on a t-shirt. 🙂
Nina says
im a bit scared to exfoliate my head/hair/scalp! 🙂
Karen says
I did it last night. It feels really good!
Kim says
This is definitely intriguing! It’s interesting that they claim it’s safe for color treated hair; I wouldn’t have guessed that. Regardless, if it works, it works! 🙂 On a side note, I really like the label graphic.
Karen says
Haha, me too. The colors are very soothing… I actually want a bathroom decorated in those shades.
Kim says
Oh, I can see that too! 🙂

I’ve tried a scalp scrub before (Bain de Terre’s…fig and something else…can’t remember, but it was a sugar scrub) and I liked it. I’ll have to check this out. And words cannot describe how much I love RuPaul. Her Drag Race is my crack lately.
