“Like sands through the hourglass, so are the ________________.”
There’s a new kid in town, and she’s a regular child prodigy — an Hourglass Prodigy, to be exact.
Prodigy, a new line of pocket-friendly lip glosses from luxury brand Hourglass, slides into Sephora stores later this month (Feb. 18), and small clutches everywhere are going wild! 🙂
But seriously, the six slick glosses cost $26 apiece, so they aren’t as cheap as their diminutive size might lead one to believe.
Still, their flat tubes seem kinda cool, don’t they? They’re designed to fit snugly into tight spaces like pockets or a tiny clutch.
I love it when companies push (or in this case squish) the envelope when it comes to design.
The top snaps off (took me a minute to figure it out) to reveal the angled applicator tip, and squeezing the body of the tube dispenses the product.
I just wish I could get Hourglass to tweak one thing…
The applicator tip’s a touch too short for me; it’s fine for applying gloss to the top and bottom of my lips but not so much for getting into the corners.
How ’bout the gloss?
I’ve been using shimmery coral Pulse for a few days and really like the non-sticky texture. It’s very smooth and reminds me of Chanel Aqualumieres.
More good stuff…
- Hydration: My lips love how moisturizing it feels, and I like that all of them contain Vitamin E.
- Pigment: Sheer-to-medium
- Taste and scent: Completely devoid of both
- Finish: I think the light shine looks natural (doesn’t go over the top).
- The usual suspects: They’re free of parabens, sulfates, phthalates and synthetic fragrances.
Wearing Pulse
Nekkid lips
Long-wearing, however, it’s not. If you’re looking for something you won’t have to reapply often, well, you might want to keep looking. Pulse required a touch-up every 90 minutes or so. I didn’t really mind, though, because it comes with territory when it comes to glosses most of the time.
Overall, I like Prodigy, but it probably doesn’t fall into my can’t-live-without-it category. Nice job to Hourglass on the packaging, and I dig the hydration and lightweight texture, but I’d feel even BETTER about it if Hourglass lengthened the applicator tip and shaved $12 off the price. 🙂 Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B

Days of our lives!
Your swatch looks so pretty, but it looks pretty sheer on your lips. I think I read in another review that the gloss is .25 oz, which is pretty big for a gloss, right? So at least you’re getting a lot for your dough…
Brandy says
Wow, that is a tiny lip gloss for $26! I am all for pretty make up splurges, but I think I’ll sit this one out.
Devs says
I had higher hopes for this lip gloss, since it is $26! But I have to say, the packaging is quite unique.
Steph B says
Sounds like this formula isn’t as good as the Extreme Sheen gloss. That had some major wear time and better pigmentation. Too bad they didn’t make a pocket version of that.
beautylogicblog says
looks kind of like the l’oreal hip packaging. hmm… $26.00 bucks and it doesn’t even last, think i’ll pass.
Stef says
Tiffany is right, the weight on these is actually .25 oz, which is bigger than most of the glosses on my vanity! But now I’m wondering if that weight includes the packaging or if it’s a net weight. Hmmm, I’m going to put my sleuth hat on!
Regardless of weight for me, I kinda love this…

Stef says
Just confirmed, it IS the net weight. So it is a bit bigger that most glosses.
But like I said, that hardly matters for me, it had me at the packaging!

That’s a pretty colour! Not so hyped about the packaging though. Happy Weekend Karen 🙂

Like the packaging, but $26 is quite pricey, especially since it doesn’t last and you would end up using the product quickly. I’m sure other brands will follow suit soon!

Days of Our Lives! I remember being hypnotized by the introduction to that show as a little girl when my mom turned it on:P
Brandy says
Huh, I guess it’s the packaging that makes it look so small. I stand corrected then, it’s not really that much more than any high end lip gloss.
Pam says
It is a beautiful color, but it does seem a bit sheer in the swatch. I’d probably layer more, to get a medium coverage. That said, and taking into account that it doesn’t last- I have to take a pass and save my 26 bucks. I’m also somewhat concerned that when it starts to run low I’d have a bad imitation of my toothpaste tube on my hands–incapable of utilizing the last bit at a critical moment. I’m neither a spendthrift or penny pincher, but I don’t spend $26 on my toothpaste if you know what I mean. I love the color and packaging though.

Bummer! I love the sleek packaging, but I hate those gloss nozzles, they feel so imprecise! I was hoping for a bitty wand that would pull out! I still want to try out Hourglass’ regular glosses, though!
Lana says
Love the packaging, like most people. I like that I could put it in the back pocket of my jeans when I go out. For that matter, even put it in the front pocket without the whole, “Is that a lipgloss in your jeans or…”
And my response is “Yeah, I don’t like you, it’s totally lipgloss.” That, and I’m a girl. 🙂

The packaging is very cute and unique, too bad I don’t have Hourglass at my local Sephora.

I see that color is beautiful on your lips Karen but the design it’s really interesting and strange in the same time. 🙂

This is why I’d never pay more than 5 dollars for a lipgloss because they all pretty much do the same thing so why shell out the money for them? I hate MAC lipglosses and alot of designer lipglosses are grossly overpriced. I just bought urban decay’s lipglosses from hautelook and they were surprisingly wonderful! Anywho i can’t believe they would put a pricetag that high on a product and/or packaging that wasn’t in damand. But I digress….
Pinch says
I do like the design, but the price tag and applicator is just a bit much (or little), for me. No clutch of mine is that small! 🙂

That is by far the most bizarre packaging I have ever seen for a lipgloss!
I would never spend that much on a lipgloss, but it sure is awesome to look at 😀

The price is steeeeeep… I find that glosses are usually small enough to fit in a clutch or pocket anyway… so i’m gonna have to pass on this.
Katie says
I think I will stick with cheap lipglass instead, but the color is very pretty.
PeaceLoveLipgloss says
That line is super pricey, so I’d rather get more stuff from other lines! Clever idea, though…

Thanks for the new pictures of this packaging. It is by far the best part of the product (in part because who really needs more gloss?), and I never realized how thin it was. It looks like a little wafer of glossy goodness.

Cute packaging but sadly Hourgloss lipgloss irritates my lips.
Catherine says
Ooh, that is so chic and pretty but I gotta say… $26 is pricy for a gloss, especially if it isn’t so pigmented. I’d probably spring for one of the Dior Creme de Glosses before this one (esp since I’m not really a sheer lipgloss girl).
Ooh! So I finally got one of the Sally Hansen 12-hr Diamond Lip glosses though! I actually got it in a gift package from a friend. I can’t wait to try it out tomorrow. 😀

No way that’s a lip gloss! I’d probably mistake it for a gum packet and try to eat it! xD It look super pretty though.

I bought two colors, and think they actually wear better than the Extreme Sheens, which didn’t last at all on me, and dried out my lips.
