TIP: For ye olde multitasking mavens, the long, skinny chopstick-style shape makes them suitable for use as impromptu hair styling sticks, too… Matter of fact, I’m using one to hold my bun in place right now. :)

I’ve been wearing Geisha, the shimmery purple (shown at the top), and even sans eye primer, it wears exceptionally well along the lash line.

It can’t hack it along the waterline, however, but I can enthusiastically forgive it for that.

Why? Because a $5 drugstore liner this smooth — one that comes in this many fun colors — doesn’t come around often.

Swatch of Geisha

If you’re open to a budget-friendlier alternative to Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils (and don’t mind the sub-par performance along the waterline), I think these are well worth a try. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A

You might like Hard Candy Take Me Out Liner if…

  • Budget makeup makes you wanna shoop
  • You like smooth pencils that don’t skip on or tug the skin
  • You rarely use liners along your waterline
  • You crave crazy, vibrant colors

Karen

i got the geisha one a while ago i love it! i love that it looks like a chop stick lol. also the curl up and dye mascara, the blush in pin up and the eye liner in black. i didnt like the eyeliner bc of the brush i usually get the felt tipped ones. ive been wearing hard candy for about 10 yrs! i love that its a walmart now! i still have the old stuff too.

  5. Nina says:

I don’t like their shape that much, but except that, creaminess sounds beautiful.

    • Karen says:

The creaminess is indeed fabulous. If you get the chance give ‘em a swipe! You might love the formula enough to forgive the liner’s shape… ya never know!

  6. Jen says:

WANT! Even though I have like a million eye liners.

    • Karen says:

Welcome to my world, hon. When I organized my liners on Sunday (haven’t done it in forever), it hit me that I have a weakness for liners!

  7. noemii says:

My parents always tease me saying I always copy my dog Mindy’s natural black eyeliner .. She’s got the “cat eyes” going on. My puppy Lola has natural white eyeshadow and pink lips . I’m so jealous !
But alas ! have makeup to change up my color to purple or green or blue or whatever I want whenever I want . I think you can never have enough eyeliner .
My local Wal Mart does a sorry job of keeping Hard Candy in stock ..but then I do live in an area with a Lot of teen-agers so whenever i do see them, the plastic seal is broken. Sure, I can sharpen it, but yeah . I can’t do it knowing it’s been tampered with . but when Geisha is there, untouched, I’m so picking it up ! Darn you and Tabs ! I’m definitely in a Teal and Purple eyeliner mood lately . But even so, the design of the pencils to me is just downright stupid . Oh well ! You can’t ask for too much in the “drugstore” makeup department in terms of packaging :x

    • Karen says:

LOL! Our pets are blessed with the no-makeup makeup look!!

      • noemii says:

        Giiiirl tell me about .
I can’t help it but feel a pang of jealousy sometimes .
I’ve honestly had people tell me that our eye “makeup” looks alike . It’s so silly !
But i love me some eyeliner.
        Tastefully done, of course :)
Mine is never quite as dramatic as hers and she never has to worry about even lines .
        Sigh .
But i love them all ! Tabs included. But i shall admire all handsome cats from afar :D

      • Karen says:

Ha! Tabs is my tightlining hero. If only my waterline could look that good! ;)

  8. I love it when drugstore liners surprise you by being creamy and smooth. I used to only expect that type of texture from UD liners but now I’ve found several drugstore lines with those pencils

    • Karen says:

It’s so great that drugstore quality is moving up! I’m loving all of the creamy pencils, especially.

Hope you had a fantastic Monday!

  9. Anne says:

Man, those are beautiful! I’ve been looking for some less expensive, lovely and creamy eyeliners to have fun with–a friend of mine constantly lauds Urban Decay’s eyeliners, but there’s that pesky thing called a budget.

A completely unrelated question for you, if you don’t mind: I have unbelievably sensitive, dry skin, and I’m looking around for a new foundation. I’ve heard good things and iffy things about Bare MInerals; have you tried them? What’s your opinion?
    Thanks~

    • Karen says:

      Hi Anne,

I know some people swear by it, but personally I haven’t had the best of luck. I tried it for a week and by the end of it I broke out something fierce.

What other foundations have you tried? My skin breaks out fairly easily, and I’ve had good luck w/Laura Mercier’s and Chanel’s.

  10. Katherine says:

I love the review I have my eye open for them

  11. Marce says:

Mmm I love that colour! Dang I always get a pang of jealousy when I see all the awesome makeup you guys have in the US. I love you anyway, though! LOL

I get a pang of jealousy whenever you tell me you’re going to the beach! Oh, I’d love to live some place where I could actually go to the beach and be warm. It’s so not like that here in Northern California!

  12. snoopysteph says:

    That’s a great deal!

Karen, can you recommend a good eyeliner that has staying power on the waterline?

  13. Sally says:

Karen, I hope you don’t take this the wrong way, because I love reading your blog, but could you consider doing more reviews of things you purchase and aren’t sent?
I’d just love to know what products you think are actually worth plunking down the cold hard cash for :]

  14. Rae says:

LOL, I love the names of these liners! The colour selection and the way you talk about them is driving me nuts… I so wish we could find Hard Candy in Canada! *pouts*

These liners look awesome. I cannot wait to hit the Wally World to check these out. The color selection is mind boggling! :D

  19. Kim says:

Geisha looks awesome and I love that you’re showing us some bright, fun colors for spring. I was inspired to do some subtle purple liner the other day, but that didn’t go well (think “punched in the eye” look). I think the Geisha liner will be a better choice! :) PS Love your new “swatch” pic…. ‘sup made me laugh.

    • Karen says:

      Hi Kim,

Oh, I totally know what you’re talking about. That happens to me when I wear purple shades with a lot of red! You might want to try purples with a blue-ish hint to them!

      • Kim says:

I’ll definitely remember to keep on the blue side – thanks so much! I don’t think my smudging skills helped much either, but I’ll keep working on that! :)

      • Karen says:

Aww, I bet all you need is practice. Do you have a good smudging brush on hand? That helps too. If you need any recs let me know… I have a few drugstore and department store ones that I like. :)

        • Kim says:

Thanks – I’d love some. I actually picked up Luxe last night while I was out and was so excited about it that I put a little on my upper lash line before I left the parking lot. It went on really smoothly but it made my eyes a little itchy after a couple of hours. Could have been the super hot weather and sweaty lids though – I’ll give it another whirl this weekend! :)

  20. Vonvon says:

I WANT them all!!! Gorgeous colors with yummylicious names!

I am a crazy freak when it comes to colored liners. Those I have are from Stila and MAC and Silkygirl(a local brand).

Will get my hands on these some day….and and at such affordable price too! :D

Oh my goodness! With such a huge variety of colors and at such a low price, I WANT THEM ALL!! :D It’s not often that drugstores offer so many different colors of liner with good staying power. I’m checking these out ASAP.
