Remember a few years ago when it seemed like every other day a different celebrity would get caught accidentally flashing her goodies on camera? It usually happened while they were stepping out of a limo, falling from a barstool or slipping off of a couch in the club.
Now, I seriously doubt that L. Lo, Brit-Brit, or P. Hilt have had anything to do with the nude/neutral/naked eyeshadow palettes that have arrived on makeup counters lately, but it still makes me wonder: is this a case of life imitating art, or just another strange makeup coincidence? 🙂
Either way, I’m not complaining. I’ll gladly take another palette of good old-fashioned wearable nudes and neutrals any day of the week.
Buzz has been building for the latest one in the limelight, the NYX Nude on Nude Eyeshadow and Lip Palette for spring ($25). Some are calling it a dupe for Urban Decay’s more expensive Naked Palette ($48).
This isn’t the first skinny dip for NYX, aka their first naked rodeo (NOTE: I’ve waited my entire life to type the words, “naked rodeo”). NYX released a much smaller version of the Nude on Nude Palette last year with fewer shadows (nine versus 20) and lip colors (two versus 10), and I think that first palette, with its warm, rich bronzes and orangey browns, bore a stronger resemblance to Urban Decay’s Naked than this newer one does. It wasn’t an exact dupe, but it shared a similar vibe.
This year’s Nude On Nude is a naked beast! With 20 shadows (many of which lean cool) and 10 lip colors to choose from, it contains a much wider selection of colors than UD’s Naked at a much lower price.

I’ve had good luck with NYX eyeshadows in the past. They’ve apply with loads of color and last a super long time on my eyes, particularly when paired with a good primer, and these Nude on Nude shades perform up to par. The eyeshadows don’t feel quite as finely milled as Urban Decay’s, however, and the colors aren’t quite as rich, but these are pretty tough to beat, considering the price.
As for the lip products, I think they’re just okay. I wouldn’t wax philosophic about them, but they’re not bad at all. They have a vaguely fruity/rosy scent (which I don’t mind) and feel non-sticky on my lips.
All in all, I like this palette a lot. It probably won’t revolutionize the makeup world as we know it, but you get 30 wearable products with it for 83 cents each. Hot damn! Oh, and Tabs hearts it, too. Yup, it’s also cruelty free.
PRICE: $25
AVAILABILITY: At drugstores, Ulta and nyxcosmetics.com

If I don’t enter Ben McKenzie rehab…
…I’ll need a Ben McKenzie intervention soon. I’ve been googling him lately (I know that sounds gross, LOL!). Did you know that homeboy played high school football with New Orleans Saints Quarterback (and hottie!) Drew Brees? And that his mum worked as a news reporter? And that he has two brothers? And that I’m totally obsessed?
I’m hoping he comes out with a celebrity fragrance so I can track him down like a freaky beauty stalker and smell him.
Anywho! I hope you had a spectacular day today. Onward to Wednesday…
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. Kinda random, but if you’re a fan of Dancing With the Stars, Dove is hosting a challenge where you can enter to win a Dancing With the Stars “experience.” Translation: you’ll get to dance in a Dove commercial that will air during the DWTS season finale.
The contest is open for entries through March 26, and you can enter by submitting a 60-second video in which you share why you’re ready for your close-up opportunity.
Good luck, you dancing machine, you! 🙂
Steph says
Great review as always Karen! I’ve been wanting this palette for a while though the lipgloss set looks so tacky!
Karen says
Thanks, Steph! 🙂
Heidi says
I was in our local ULTA today and was very happy to see that they are expanding their NYX offerings, so hopefully they will get this soon. It looks great!
Karen says
Awesome, Heidi. 🙂 I have a few more NYX spring reviews lined up… will let you know if I find any gems!
vonnie says
ooooh, that is on point for a neutrals palette, NYX continues to impress! I would buy that if i didn’t already have the naked, it’s such a good deal. oh well, next go round 😛
Karen says
Good thing there’s always something new to look forward to in the makeup world, right?
Paris B says
I’d pick up the eye colours – they’re right up my alley! but I’m not feeling the lip palette that’s bundled together. Next! 😉
Karen says
Maybe UD Naked is more for you then. 🙂
Vijaya says
I already have the naked palette, but since I’m not really a big fan of nudes, I’ll probably be skipping this one.
It’s kind of miraculous that you got all those swatches on your arm. I have trouble with just ten.
Karen says
Ha! Well, I’ve been doing it for a while… eventually you figure out how to stuff ’em all onto one arm, LOL!
Makeup Morsels says
LOL I love this review. Yeah, still got my heard set on the Naked palette. After reading this review, I also have my heart set on this one…eek! I like that the lip products come in a separate drawer, and aren’t completely sheer.
Karen says
I hope you like this one! Do you still plan on getting it?
Kaitlyn says
The Urban Decay palette looks to have a lot more shimmer than the NYX version. I like em both though.
Karen says
Both are great. 🙂
Michelle C. says
I love Nyx but no thank you! That is some ugly plastic packaging, and I just cannot get over that mustard yellow. Why is it there! Go away! Get out! Yeesh.
I’ll stick to my Naked and Champagne and Cavier pallets.
Karen says
I was kinda surprised they didn’t do their regular black packaging with this one… I guess it really does take inspiration from UD’s Naked!
gio says
I prefer the UD Naked palette but I think it’s great that NYX has released a cheap dupe for it. This is a great set for those that love nude shades and it’s great value for money too.
mandy says
I have the Urban Decay naked … But is it such a bad thing, I want this — because of the mattes. Do they blend easily? I’m a NC 40, do you think they will show up?
Karen says
Hi Mandy,
They do. I think they’ll show up on you. You might have to pack on a few of the lighter colors, but they layer well.
cheyenne says
i should have just not bought the ud palette and waited for this. i’m a sucker for high end. adsf; asd;lkfj
Karen says
That’s still a great palette! You won’t be disappointed. 🙂
Kimmi says
Great comparison post! I have last years NYX Nude palette and the UD Naked but I still want this new NYX one. In your opinion, is it worth it if I already have the other two?
I am not a fan of lip palettes at all so I know I wouldn’t even use that section.
Karen says
Hi Kimmi,
You’re probably already covered if you have both those palettes. 🙂
AtelierGal says
I really wish NXY Cosmetics are readily available here. They were available for a while with the prices marked up really high, but the store didn’t appreciate the products and everywhere was a mess.
That being said, I don’t have the Naked Palette but this one looks really desirable to own, at a cheaper price 🙂
Karen says
Hope you can get your hands on this one!
Stephanie! says
*died and went to neutral heaven*
Karen says
LOL, Stephanie. 🙂
mint says
that’s so cool. I’ve been dying to get my hands on a naked palette and this looks like a good alternative. I’m not a big fan of palette lip colours but it’s nice that they’ve included it here. Seems like an improvement from the last nyx nude shadow palette. thanks for the swatches!
Karen says
You’re welcome, Mint!
Gina (prim and polished) says
Thanks for a great review. I’ve been wanting to hear more about this item. You cannot beat the price!
Karen says
You’re welcome, Gina!
Kim says
That is a lot of nude packed into a surprisingly small case. Some of the lighter, more matte colors look a bit chalky to me but, hey, for the price, there’s a lot to love, as you say.
I actually had a laughing snort moment over “… and smell him”. That and “naked rodeo” definitely made my morning. This is why I love reading your posts! HAHA!
PS You TOTALLY have to sign up for that DWTS contest. It would be so awesome if you won! 🙂
Karen says
Haha… Maybe, if I could bring Tabs along with me. I could put him in a cat stroller or maybe a snuggie? Gosh, I just realized how CCL that sentence sounds.
Kim says
Have you seen that Geico “does it take 2 to tango?” commercial? Now, every time I see it, I’ll be thinking of you and your DWTS partner – and Tabs! 🙂
Nina says
the eyeshadows in that palette are so pretty – and for the price, it is an acceptable dupe for the naked palette, and then some! 🙂
the colors seem familiar though — kinda like i have them in those 10 pans that i already have. but still – great value for money!
Karen says
Hi Nina,
Yeah, this one is like a bunch of the older NYX 10-pan palettes combined into one. 🙂
Silva says
What a gorgeous palette, the Nyx one is!
Karen says
It sure is!
DalaLuz says
Thanks for the elaborate review. It seems like a really nice palette, but I think I am going to try and save up for the UD Naked, by the time I have saved enough it will be back in stock 😉
Karen says
Hi DalaLuz,
Urban Decay just restocked their Naked Palettes yesterday. It’s currently available online!
Ruchita says
Thanks for for review and comparison swatches! I just ordered the Urban Decay Naked palette yesterday, so I’ll probably hold off on the NYX one for a while. I’ll definitely keep it mind for a future purchase, though!
Appu says
Now that UD stocked the Naked Palette, I might as well buy it. Even if I get this, I know fo sho’ I am gonna get that one too. Plus, the lip colors don’t look so impressive 🙂
Instant Karma (formerly L) says
LOL naked rodeo
It looks pretty, but some of it leans a little too cool for me. Also, it may just be bad luck in choosing a few less than stellar shades, but I’ve had some fall out problems with NYX shadows I’ve purchased.
Those two reddish lip glosses look really pretty, though! This makes me want to buy more of the Black Label lipsticks, which are of good enough quality to rival lipsticks that cost three times as much. It may be shopping time…:D
candace grubbs says
i get mine on friday! i’m so happy i found it!
Suzanne says
oh my lord a new nyx palette OMGIdonteven *runsforonlineretailer* I am ALL over this like a disease. Creamy Nyxy heaven.
Meghan says
Oh my goodness.. I am speechless.. lol
Gen says
Dont worry about you Ben Mackenzie obsession.. Im just the same with the guys of Supernatural and im in my 30’s…it makes me giggles like a litlle girl…My husband is thinking about confiscated my DVD!!!!
Trisha says
I totally want this! So bad! What a good price. No offense to UD, but screw the Naked Palette when you can get this instead.
Stavroula Plag says
Wow it looks so close! 🙂 Your swatches are always helpful Karen, thanks 😉 x
Nina says
i’ll deffo be on the look out for this one. We only have NYX in one or two malls here (philippines) so maybe ordering online would be best 😛
Cindy says
The Virgin eyeshadow in UD’s palette is awesome!!! Will they have that for sale separately? If not, do you know of another shadow as a match for it.
Adria says
The eye shadows look pretty interesting….the lip glosses, not so much. I’ll stick with my Naked palette. I use that sucker everyday!
Cassie says
OMG have not seen Ben M for aaaaages! He totally disappeared off my radar after the OC, but I love him then!
The Nyx palette looks awesome, but like you said, it’s not on par with UD’s. Why settle for an imitation when I’ve already got the real deal? 😀 Of course, I’m totally lusting after Nyx at the mo since I’m in the UK, so there’s no guarantee that I won’t be lemming for it and cave in the end!
Cassie x
Yuki says
I’m getting this… I’M GETTING THIS,
Alice says
Oh boo. With my decidedly warm skin and my possession of the UD Naked palette, I guess I’ll have to pass on this one. Even though it’s super cute. 🙁
Gina says
Well, Urban Decay shadows are pretty tough to beat, especially the Naked palette (one of my smartest investments!). But NYX certainly does hold their own. I have one of their eyeshadow trios, and man, for the price, they are pretty fantastic!
Christy says
Wow, love love love! I am grabbing this next time I get a chance 🙂
Anita says
Thanks Karen for doing this review! I was hoping you would do one on this palette. I too was thinking about Naked but I don’t like that brush. I have so many already. Would you say the nyx is matte er LOL than the naked? Thanks so much!!!!
Karen says
Hi Anita,
Yup, there are many more mattes in the NYX palette. The shadows are a little less pigmented as well. It’s still a good palette for the price though!
Anastasia says
its amazing! i think nyx products are amazing! the quality is not like other “drugstore” brands
i just ordered this palette since nyx is not sold in greece ! can’t wait. which other nyx products would you recommend ?
Melody says
Wow the Nyx palette looks beautiful! I got lucky and managed to get my hands on Naked about a month ago, but this still piques my interest. Maybe it’s because I’ve never tried anything but the nyx makeup remover before. I need to!
Coral says
I’m in love with the NYX palettes. If they were readily available at a store nearby and I didn’t have to buy them online then I’d spend way too much money on them. With this new mega set of nudes I may have to go on a mission and try to hunt them down or just give in and try to buy them online.
Vonvon says
Thanks for the comparison between UD Naked and this palette. So indeed this palette is more ‘compact’ then UD, in terms of the overall size. And with more shades too. Hmmm, if only I am not on a makeup ban….. that said, I just hauled some MAC Wonder Woman stuffs today. 😉
Donna says
Quick question– where is the NYX palette made? China? After some of the problems with some of the products coming out of China with ingredients in them that they are not supposed to have, I have become very conscious of where my makeup is manufactured. I have noticed that some companies that normally make their products in the US or Canada go to China for the large, cheaper palettes– like Tarte, Stilla….
Tiffany says
Thanks for the review. Now I just need to find a store that sells NYX in Toronto. 🙁
Sarah says
Hi, I was wondering if this NYX palette has any of the same colors from the 9 piece one you reviewed here: https://www.makeupandbeautyblog.com/cosmetics/so-whos-duping-whom-the-nyx-nude-on-nude-natural-look-kit-vs-urban-decay-naked/
Please let me know, if the shades are different, I kind of want both! lol
J. Lopez says
Hi!
Do you have any idea what Shade of lipgloss is the 8th shade (the reddish one) thanks. Ü
Lena says
I might buy this since it’s on sale on Hautelook for $15 instead of the retail $25 for my friend who wants the Naked / Naked2 (which I own) because her birthday is coming up but I wanted to give her a whole basket filled with inexpensive yet great make up products instead of just one palette. This might be tossed in there. :).
