For the Price, These $3.49 Essence Gel Eyeliners Have MAC Fluidline Whipped

July 5th, 2011 by Karen 86 Comments

essence gel eyeliner

Essence continues to rock me like a hurricane (and take the drugstore makeup world by storm). What fab, little steals these pigmented, long-wearing Gel Eyeliners are! They come in three shades — matte black Midnight in Paris, shimmery taupe London Baby and shimmery purple Berlin Rocks — and cost a mere $3.49 each.

The fluffy texture of this shoestring wedding of whipped mousse and $15 MAC Fluidline doesn’t hold these back at all. In fact, with the Sonia Kashuk bent brush, I find them surprisingly easy to apply, and since they’re also quick drying — like, in less than a minute — I finish lining with them in less time than it takes to say, “Ben McKenzie is hot!”

Well, ya know. 🙂

And even without the help of my trusty NARS Pro Prime Smudge Eyeshadow Base, they stay put all day long without creasing or fading.

After spending Midnight in Paris, I went to London, Baby! I’ve been playing with these two shades for a few days, and I’m flat-out impressed. While Midnight in Paris performs as an admirably adequate, standard black liner (great for cat eye looks), London Baby makes this girl go wild. A shimmery, dark taupe lightly seasoned with purple, it’s a fun alternative to black and brown. It should pair exceptionally well with most neutral eyeshadows like taupe, brown and beige, and even shades of pink.

PRICE: $3.49 each
AVAILABILITY: Available now at Ulta stores, Fred Meyer and HEB stores, and also online
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: A+ (just fantastic overall)

Karen

What a steal! I like London Baby. I got the corresponding eyeliner brush for less than $2 recently. Haven’t tried it yet, but I was so glad to find a brush with a small brush head! (Better precision for me.)

Karen & MBB readers — do you know how this compares to Wet n Wild’s Creme Eyeliner? WnW’s is cheap & super pigmented, but it’s so long-wearing to the point where it’s difficult to remove, and the pot dries out quickly. Thanks!

I like MAC more for tightlining. While these do a fine job of sticking to the waterlines, I get a little bit of smudging a long my lower lash lines.

Our village is very small but we have a really big (relatively speaking!) 4th celebration with a parade and fireworks over the lake. The boys rollerbladed with the hockey club and had a great time. I have both (also, in Italy we have a dark teal too), and they last a lot without a base too. On my eyes, 99% of stuff lasts next to nothing, but these did an incredible job and they lasted a whole day without creasing or running. I also tried them in the rim and they did a very good job.
Have you tried using them as eyeshadows, alone or under other colors? They are so soft that applying them is totally easy 🙂

The Ballerina Backstage collection from Essence is hitting stands here at the moment, also containing some really impressive bits for the price.

I figured I would go back and get the purple one eventually if the black one worked well, but I totally would have skipped straight past London Baby because I thought it was a plain brown, which I never wear. I have this in London Baby and it is suuuch a pretty color! And super creamy – seriously, the texture is like a light cream moisturizer! But still super pigmented. Doesn’t dry too fast and very blendable so it can be used as an all over wash of color too. I imagine this won’t dry out anytime soon like most cream liners do since it’s so creamy. Have been meaning to get the black (especially after seeing your insane swatch!) but it’s been sold out at my ULTA. I hope they come out with more colors – would love a sparkly black (cheap alternative to Chanel’s myrifique, plz? lol)

Yay, great review. Someone else recommended this to me, and I can’t wait to try it out. And to think – I was going to pick up the MAC fluidline!!! Tsk tsk.

I bought the black shade last weekend and was amazing. The texture is so smooth, it’s so incredibly pigmented, it applies like a dream, and it’s only $3.49! Yes, just as good if not better than MAC Blacktrack.

About Makeup and Beauty Blog

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog
Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my two-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my cat (Tabs).
