I finally started getting ready for my trip, and the first thing I packed was Fekkai Summer Hair Zero-Humidity Frizz Control ($22), a hair treatment spray designed to combat frizz and to protect hair from sun damage. It’s humid in Hawaii, which does a number on wavy hair like mine. I’d have a bird’s nest in no time without my Fekkai. The company says the product seals the hair cuticle. That’s marketing fancy talk, but I do know that on previous trips to the tropics, after I’ve spritzed it on damp, washed hair and brushed it through with a wide toothed comb, my hair has stayed smooth and frizz-free.
Zero-Frizz isn’t just a hair smoothing spray. It smells great (like coconut and citrus) and even contains a UV protectant Fekkai calls Solarshield, designed to prevent sun damage and lightening. And no alcohol here, which is a big plus, as hair products containing alcohol tend to be drying.

While I’m scouring Oahu for beauty breakthroughs and cool tropical stuff to share with you, I’ll still have my Crackberry with me, checkin’ comments and stuff.
You know what I’m in the mood for right now? A Coca Cola in a glass bottle. Mmm… 🙂

Have fun for all of us Karen!!!
I might have to check this out…and I think you have me convinced to change shampoos.

Girl, you know I will take a ton of pics so it’ll be like we’re all taking a fun girls’ vacay together!
Oh, sweet. Are you going with the Deva?
Tiffany says
What a coincidence that you posted this today, because I have had this sitting in my bathroom for months and finally got around to trying it today. I didn’t notice much difference in my hair, although it is a lot softer. But my hair texture is probably way different from yours. I wish I had wavy hair!
What are your other tropical vacay essentials? Have you ever tried monoi oil?
Megan says
I haven’t actually decided yet. I was thinking I might call my stylist and ask her…
or i might do some online research/polling…what are your recommendations for curly girls?

Oh shoot a coke in a bottle sounds so good right now….

Ohhh this is a product I need to try out!! You wouldn’t believe it but it gets so stupidly humid here and it ruins my hair within seconds of stepping outside.haha It’s so thick and wavy…. I thank my dear Mom every day for it.haha
I’m putting this spray at the top of my list. Thanks!
Have a safe trip!! I bet it will be beautiful. 🙂

Hey Karen, So I know you are a devotee to B&B’s super rich conditioner (which I love btw) but what other hair products do you use? I am a big fan of B&B’s color support line as well as their Creme de Coco…

I love the Fekkai Oceanique tousled wave spray, it makes my hair look messy on purpose instead of just messy! 😉
Karen says
Hi Tiffany,
What kind of hair texture do you have? 🙂 I would gladly lend you my wavy hair if I could. For years I hated having it and have only recently gotten around to being one with the waves/curls.
The biggest essential is sunscreen, and loads of it! That and waterproof mascara. 🙂 Funny you should mention monoi oil, because I’m bringing along an after-sun soothing lotion with monoi oil in it. I can’t wait to try it.
Karen says
Hi Megan,
I liked Deva but I got tired of the smell eventually. Plus, it was kind of a pain to get a hold of. The biggest thing to make my hair less bird-nesty was giving up shampoos and conditioners with lots of silicones. I’ve used Super Rich (which does have some but it’s way down on the list of ingredients) and Gentle Shampoo on and off for the last year and my hair is very happy.
You should totally call your stylist and ask her! And when you find out you better let me know what she recommends. 🙂
Karen says
Hi Kris,
Doesn’t it though? I love cold Coke in bottle; my second fave is a really good fountain Coke with lots of ice. YUM!
Karen says
Hi Bridget,
My hair is thick and wavy, too. Do you wear yours down wavy or do you straighten it? Oh! I just got a Fekka Summer Hair Beach Waves spray. It’s supposed to created tousled beach waves. I hope it works!
Thanks for the well wishes! I’ll take lots of good pics to share with ya. 🙂

Hi Meaghan,
I have a whole army of bottles in my shower and various styling products on my shelf, LOL. Right now in addition to Bumble & Bumble I’m using a leave-in conditioner and gel from an indy line called Zerran. I like it a lot!
OH! If you like Creme de Coco they have a new hair mask. I just picked it up and I’m going to bring it with me cause my hair is probably take a beating with all the sun and saltwater.
Karen says
Hi Christine,
Thanks! Have a good weekend!

Hey Karen!
I have fine hair and it’s blah. I try to add waves, but my hair has a hard time holding them.
OMG, please tell me about this after-sun lotion with monoi! I am looking for a good after sun lotion, since they discontinued lancome cool comfort.
Glosslizard says
I’ve been wondering if that formula is different than the other one (in the blue bottle)… let me know what you think! What does it smell like?
Oh, that reminds me… I got a sample of Comptoir Sud Pacifique fragrance in Tiare and I actually really liked it! Soft tiare flower with an undertone of coconut and vanilla without being too foody! It really smells summery and beachy to me, have you ever smelled it?
lindsay says
i love fekkai’s summer hair beach waves. my hair is like stick straight so it doesn’t get frizzy but i love the beach waves cause it gives my hair body and since i’m always at the beach it protects my hair and i like the nice summery scent!
Karen says
Hi Karen B.,
I think you’d love it! It smells divine and works great. 🙂
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
It’s the same product, but in different packaging. The gals at the Blue Mercury told me that Fekkai puts it in the orange bottle for the Summer Hair run.
I’ve never smelled that perfume (coincidentally, I’ve seen that brand at Blue Mercury, too). It sounds like it smells divine. My nose is super stuffed right now (bad allergies), but I’m hoping it’ll clear up before I go to the Sephora later on this week. I’ll look for it when I’m there!
BTW, when we arrived at the airport my mom-in-law gave me a tuberose lei, which smelled exactly like Estee Lauder’s Tuberose Gardenia perfume. Did you ever give that a sniff?
Karen says
Hi Lindsay,
The smell of the Summer Hair products was a huge selling point for me. I love it!
Glosslizard says
That’s so sweet! I bet it smelled amazing all day! I haven’t sniffed Tuberose Gardenia yet, I tried, but the Estee Lauder counter at Macy’s didn’t have it. I’m going to look for it next time I’m at Nordstrom!
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
Funny that you mention that you didn’t see it at Macy’s… I noticed that, too. There’s a perfume and a lotion of the scent. Both are fabulous. I tend to like Estee Lauder perfumes, though. I wore “Pleasures” for most of the late 90s and “Beyond Paradise” is still one of my favorites.
Glosslizard says
It was funny actually, the Estee Lauder counter lady seemed kind of embarassed and disdainful at the same time! She said, That’s in the signature collection, and Macy’s doesn’t carry those. You’ll have to look at the “higher end” stores!
I liked Pleasures too! 🙂
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
Oh boy! I always thought of Macy’s as shu-shu-fu-fu!
Man, I wore Pleasures OUT! I had both the lotion and the spray!
Did you ever go through a Tresor phase? It seems like all the fragrance hounds I knew during the 90s went through one at some point in time.
Glosslizard says
No, I didn’t pay too much attention to scents at that time! I had a tiny freebie bottle of Pleasures and I wore it to special events and weddings and such. Other than that, I would wear lavender water from Crabtree & Evelyn.
Although it was around that time that I happened upon a Guerlain counter and fell in love with Vol de Nuit! I couldn’t afford it at the time, but my friend bought me a tiny bottle on her trip to France, and I wore that sparingly. I think it was ’97 when I finally made my own trip to Paris (with Hubby) and bought my first full-sized bottle of perfume, Vol de Nuit, at the Guerlain store on the Champs Elysees! Talk about fragrance-triggered memories! 🙂

I have dense, frizzy, and naturally curly (kinky in the humidity) hair. It’s very long and very hard to brush without help. The Shielo Leave in Protectant does the trick and has saved me a lot of pain and discomfort. It tames the frizz and makes it much, much easier to brush when wet. I can even comb it when wet without any problem. Just sayin’….
