NYC New York Color Lipshine in Midtown Mulberry
Today El Hub found out about my affair. 🙁
It had been going on since way back in 2006. That’s when I met the Sally Hansen Diamond 12-Hour Lip Treatments while cruising the aisles at Walgreens one afternoon for a pick-me-up after a really tough day.
There they were, non-sticky and pigmented, with a wear time that lasted for hours and hours…
What can I say? It just happened. When I saw they were a mere $6, I was willing to throw everything away. They were the closest thing to drugstore lipgloss nirvana I had ever seen.
But I’m not going to say I would have done it all again. No way. What I should have done is hold out for the NYC New York Color Liquid Lipshines I met last week. 🙂
Like the Sally Lip Treaments, they’re light and non-sticky with lots of rich color, but they’re an even more incredible bargain at $2.49 a pop!
Since the last experience I had with an NYC gloss was less than stellar, I expected Brighton Beach Peach (a shimmery golden peach), Midtown Mulberry (a creamy berry) and Big Apple Spice (a pearly bronze) to let me down. They’re the three Lipshine shades I recently tried (out of the 10 available).
Thankfully, it didn’t work out that way at all.
From top to bottom: Midtown Mulberry, Brighton Beach Peach and Big Apple Spice
Wands from the left: Brighton Beach Peach, Big Apple Spice and Midtown Mulberry
Swatches from the left: Brighton Beach Peach, Big Apple Spice and Midtown Mulberry
Big Apple Spice
Brighton Beach Peach
Pigment varies among the colors. These three range from sheer to medium to full coverage, so the line probably has a little something for everyone.
The three I tried have a (faint) yummy caramel flavor and scent, both of which fade after about 10 minutes on my lips, and they’re hydrating as all heck.
And have I mentioned how long they last? We’re talking hours, even through a meal.
For what it’s worth, Tabs says he also likes the brand. He says NYC New York Color doesn’t test on animals, MEOW!
PRICE: $2.49 each; 10 colors to choose from
AVAILABILITY: Available now at drugstores and also online
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: A+
Mr. Chatterbox!
Did you happen to hop on Google today? They had some cool artwork to honor children’s book writer Roger Hargreaves, probably best known for his Mr. Men and Little Miss books, which my younger brother and I both loved. I remember him begging me to read Mr. Chatterbox to him over and over again.
Speaking of children’s books, I just found out that another one of my childhood faves, Mr. Popper’s Penguins, written by Richard & Florence Atwater, has been made into a movie that comes out next month.
I’m not one of Jim Carrey’s biggest fans, but I’m looking forward to the movie. In second grade, I re-read the book so many times that I broke the spine of my copy. 🙂
I just hope they don’t do that thing where they make the animals’ lips move like a human’s because it FREAKS. ME. OUT! I’ll take a regular old dog or cat with a simple voiceover like in Homeward Bound any day.
On the subject of children’s books, though, what were some of your favorites as a child?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

2.49?! oh my word! i need to pick up midtown mulberry! hopefully it’ll be available soon. it’ll be more than 2.49 here in canada, but i’m sure it won’t be more than $5. i’m HOPING, anyway :p.
Karen says
I hope so too, as these are quite a steal. 🙂
dazzlelight♥ says
i found them in rexall for $1.29!!! STEAL 😀
Heidi says
Brighton Beach Peach will be mine!
As for children’s books, I absolutely love The Velveteen Rabbit. A few years ago my best friend bought me a vintage copy of it and it’s one of my most cherished possessions.
Karen says
I love that book too. I remember reading it once as an adult and getting teary eyed at the end. 🙂
Heidi says
Yup, it’s one of those stories you really appreciate all the more when you’re all grown up!
Karen says
How old is your vintage copy of the book?
Jessi says
Ahhhmahhgaaaahd! I love cheap and awesome drugstore finds. It feels so amazing when you find something you love at such a low price.
My favorite book as a little girl was Where The Wild Things Are. I would sit in my Dad’s lap after my bath at night in his big comfy brown chair while he read it to me. I remember wishing he would read slower so I wouldn’t have to go to bed as soon!
Karen says
LOVED that book too! That’s such a sweet memory of you and your dad, aww! 🙂
Lauren says
You convinced me. I NEED these! (-: Would the Brighton Peach work as a nude?
Karen says
Oh totally. You could also punch it up a little by layering something like MAC Subculture beneath it too!
gio says
What a great find, so inexpensive! Big Apple Spice looks gorgeous!
Karen says
It’s so pretty!
Crystal says
I love Mr. Popper’s penguins! It was my favorite book too. Hopefully the movie will do the book justice.
Karen says
I hope it does too, otherwise there will be a lot of cranky fans, LOL!
laura says
i’ve been gravitating towards lipglosses lately so this might be worth a try. i also totally adored mr. popper’s penguins when i first read it in second grade. it introduced me to penguins which are now undoubtedly one of my favorite animals. another book i another book i quite like is the phantom tollbooth.
Karen says
I like penguins too. They wear the best outfits (you can never go wrong with classic black and white!). 🙂
Donna says
Woo hoo! That Midtown Mulberry is gorg-e-ous!!! Looks great on you!
After scrolling down and seeing the Mr Men and Little Miss google doodle immediately below, I had to comment. I usually lurk and ooh & aah at the pretty pics but I wanted to pipe in and say that I enjoy your blog. Thanks for giving me good bargain suggestions. I have expensive tastes, but a short unemployment stint has taught me to appreciate the affordable alternatives!!
Karen says
Hi Donna,
Thanks for stopping by to say hello! I love both high and low end makeup, and finding gems at the drugstore is one of my favorite things to do! So glad that you enjoy reading. 🙂
kalcedon says
I already have Midtown Mulberry, but I need these other two! Especially Big Apple Spice… I love it… also, everyone and their mother are raving about Brighton Beach Peach in the Hungarian blogosphere, so I have to try that, too! 🙂
Karen says
That’s so random! It is a good color, though! Very MLBB. 🙂
Krystal says
Those look absolutely GORGEOUS. I may have to pick up one or four on my way to Longs/CVS (Sally Hansen is 40% off this week! Yay!).
Karen says
Good to know! What do you plan on picking up at the Sally Hansen sale?
Vijaya says
Midtown Mulberry is SO pretty. =]
Karen says
Yes it is!
Nina says
ohh i want those – such lovely glosses for a lovely price!
Karen says
I know, right! My nearby Target sells the line… maybe they’ll have ’em at your store, too?
Nina says
im happy to report they do! i had to go get some kitty food, so i popped by target to check!
i bought big apple spice and midtown mulberry — ill try em out after i eat my lunch and brush! 🙂
Karen says
Can’t wait to hear what you think.
Speaking of kitty food, I should need to re-stock Tabs’ gravy SOON!
Nina says
liking the texture so far! 🙂
Karen says
Yay! Isn’t the long, skinny doe foot nice too? I like how it really gets into the corners of my lips.
Ruchita says
I love Brighton Beach Peach! For only $2.49 I will definitely have to check these out!
Karen says
Awesome, Ruchita! I like that shade too. 🙂
Kim says
What a steal! NYC and Sally Hansen are both owned by Coty so, while you may be cheating a little on El Hub, at least you’re staying true to Coty. 🙂 hee hee!
I’m with you on the animals’ lips moving like humans. I don’t dig it either. I loved the Black Stallion books as a kid and A Wrinkle in Time. Those are really the only ones that are coming to me and they were from late elementary school. I remember being read James and the Giant Peach and Winnie the Pooh in early elementary and loving that, but I can’t recall anything I read myself at that age.
Karen says
LOL! 🙂 Speaking of Coty, did you ever use their loose powder — the one with the gold top and the powder puff pattern? I remember it being all the rage when I was in high school.
Oh, and thanks for bringing up James and the Giant Peach. I loved that book too! I think there’s a scene in it where James tries to eat his way through the peach… I remember thinking that would’ve been SO COOL.
Kim says
No, I never used the powder. I remember having a Cover Girl pressed powder compact (that was probably 3 shades too dark) and then “graduating” to Corn Silk. Which, now that I think of it, was subsequently bought by Coty. My goodness – they’re everywhere! I was surprised that they bought OPI, too. They’re on the move. 🙂
Definitely! I also love when the peach “flies”. I think I’ll re-read that book!
Karen says
Haha, my friends and I were all about Corn Silk for touch ups. I remember busting out that little brown compact during band practice breaks!
I think I need to re-read that book too… and eat a peach. 😀
Izzy says
James and the Brighton Beach Peach?
Karen says
LOL… after he eats through the peach walls he gets rewarded with lipgloss.
AK says
Good find, Karen! Thanks for the tips on NYC.
I have sooo many childhood books that I look back on and just cherish in my heart…but if I could choose maybe 3 it would be:
-Pat the Bunny (very young children’s book with interactive touch features, and it always smelled so nice. I know, weird, but it had this distinct smell! Even the ones they make today have it!)
-The Magic Locket (I LOVED this book. About a little girl who was kind of clumsy and had low self confidence. A book about believing in yourself and loving yourself. It was such a neat book. And it came with a locket, too! *score*)
-Sailor Moon manga (These were top notch manga with the most amazing illustrations. Naoko Takeuchi was able to convey so much emotion and feeling through this series, I loved it!)
Karen says
You’re welcome, AK! And thanks for sharing your favorite books. I’m always curious to know what people love to read. 🙂
Have a great Tuesday!
Taffy says
Although I haven’t had much success with NYC’s face colours, they haven’t let me down in the nail and lip department yet. My only wish is that they would have more seasonal collection!
My favourite childrens books when I was growing up in Montreal were the Adventures of Tintin series by Herge. I loved Herge’s economical way with lines and the stories always had international intrigue. Although I know some of the content is considered very un-PC now, it wasn’t like Tintin wasn’t surrounded by reoccuring characters that were not to sharp themselves. I think I might be one of the few North Americans who can’t wait for the movie!
Karen says
One of my good friends in college had a Tin Tin poster in her room (it was her nickname). I’ve always really liked the artwork in that series.
What other products from NYC’s nail and lip line do you like?
Chris25 says
Big Apple Spice looks ridiculously pretty. Karen, I found out yesterday that I have been accepted to NYU!
Karen says
Congrats, Chris! I’m so happy for you. 🙂 When do you start?
Chris25 says
I am also applying to Columbia U, so I will wait to see what happens with that. If I do go to NYU, I will probably start in September.
Karen says
I’m very happy for you. This is wonderful time in your life — enjoy EVERY second of it! 🙂
Rae says
Loving the look of Midtown Mulberry! That + the cost + the wear = I desperately need to hunt these down 😛
Karen says
Hope you find them in your neck of the woods!
tjoyu says
I love lip gloss almost as much as I love nail polish. And for less than $3…I predict a drug store scavenge in my future for these! Thanks for the info!
Karen says
You’re welcome! I hope you find some great colors. 🙂
Lulee says
midtown mulberry looks like the PERFECT shade on you. never take it off… ever!
Karen says
Thanks, Lulee!
Do you think you might try any of these glosses?
Linnea says
These look amazing! I don’t remember what my favourite book was as a kid, but I loved The Hungry Caterpillar (so beautiful!) as well as anything Munch (Thomas’ snowsuit, because I could RELATE).
I am a fan of Jim Carrey, and I think he’ll do this movie really well as he’s pretty good in animal movies(hello Ace Ventura).. So hopefully!
kellyo says
Mid town Mulberry looks amazing! As a kid I loved Mr Men and Little Miss and now I get to read them to my nieces 🙂 My favorite though was Robert Munsch The Paperbag Princess and the Beverly Cleary books.
Karen says
Ahh, Beverly Cleary! I loved the Ramona books too!
jillian m. says
I’m running out to get this today! Brighton Beach Peach looks amazing!
Karen says
SWEET! I hope you love it. 🙂
Tamara says
Will definitely be keeping an eye out for these, they look like a great staple item.
I loved books as a kid, I could list favourites all day.. but one that stands out is Red is Best by Kathy Stinson.
Karen says
You know, I don’t think I ever read that as a kid!
victoria r. says
*gasp!* midtown mulberry … i want to go to there!
Karen says
LOL! I felt the same way too when I first put it on!
Any other colors catch your eye?
JenJ says
Oh my *chants* i do not need more lip gloss. i do not need more lip gloss. lol!
Karen says
Gurl, it’s only $2.50!!!
Jen says
HA! Made a Target run on the way home. Picked up Brighton Beach Peach and Big Apple Spice. Nice!
Karen says
YAY! Have you tried ’em on yet?
Jen says
Loooooooove *sing song voice* Very very nice. They feel great on. Brighton Beach Peach is amazing. Guess I’ll be scooping up more colors. Drug store brands are really stepping up their game.
Karen says
So glad you like it! 🙂 Do you have MAC Subculture? I bet it would look gorgeous paired with Brighton Beach Peach.
I agree regarding drugstore makeup getting better. In the late ’80s and early ’90s it was pretty rough, LOL!
Jen says
No I don’t have subculture. Shucks lol!
Izzy says
I read this post in English class off my phone, and today I knew I had to hunt these down! I checked my CVS, but to no avail. On the NYC site, it says that they have these at a larger CVS slightly out of my way. Tomorrow I need to pick a few of the cream finishes up (rather than frosted, bleh). Excited!
Caroline says
Just happened to be at my local Target after reading your raves about NYC lipglosses and picked up Brighton beach Peach. I Love it!! It looks gorgeous in the sun. I couldn’t stop staring at my lips in the mirror when I was in the car. Now I need to go back and try the other colors.
My favorite childhood book, wow, there were many. I loved The Little Red Caboose, Tiki-Tiki-Tembo, and Cinderella (still have the beat up copy I gave to by 3 yr-old).
Beautiful Canvas says
Wow, for $2.49…it’s a must try! The Mulberry shade look gorgeous on you.
MissButterfly says
got 2 of them today at walmat for even $2,27 … they look so nice!
For the love of life says
The big apple shade is such a lovey color. The shade looks great on you! 🙂
Lacey says
I freaking love these NYC Liquid Lipshines! I have two (Honey on the Hudson and Nude New York).
GG says
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! Per your review I popped down to my local Kruidvat (a Dutch drugstore chain) and picked up a lip shine and a stain for the princely sum of 6 euros together. I grabbed the stain in Rock On Ruby and the gloss in Rockefeller Red. I usually avoid drugstore lipglosses as they often have a synthetic, fruity scent, or they’re thick and make my lips feel numb, but this lipgloss feels incredible and has a really natural caramel scent that fades quickly. Plus my hair doesn’t stick to it!
You’re right about the wear time on the stain, but it makes for such a pretty lip I don’t mind anyway.
I’m so glad I checked out this brand!
