“What does a show about high school choir have to do with nail polish?” I wondered, standing in the middle of Sephora yesterday. Gazing upon the display for the new Sephora by OPI Glee Collection, I tried to connect the dots between Mr. Shue, his band of musical misfits and OPI’s line of limited edition lacquers.
I guess the answer was obvious enough: who cares? 🙂 In a world with Spanx for Men, I suppose anything is possible.
Shoot, if Katy Perry and Justin Bieber can do it, why not the kids from McKinley High?
SIDENOTE: I predict the next stop on the Glee beauty bus will be a fragrance. Soon, your 10-year old cousin will be asking you to buy her the new Glee-eau de toilette (a fruity-floral, for sure!).
The lyrical line, which just arrived on shelves, contains 10 new shades ($9.50 each) and three packs of stick-on nail prints ($15 each). If $9.50 sounds like a lot, there’s also a set of six 0.12-oz. mini-bottles for $24. In true Glee fashion, the colors have names like “Slushied” and “Celibacy Club.”
I was hoping to find “The Chronic Lady,” “My Shop Teacher Has No Thumbs” and “The School Nurse Gave Me These Vitamins,” but then again I like to think of the quirky first season as the golden age of Glee.
I briefly considered the polka-dot nail stickers, but I think I was still under the influence of the drugs I got at the dentist… Adhesive beauty products aren’t usually my thing (I blame it on a traumatic experience involving Lee Press-On Nails many years ago).
Er, maybe?
But I did walk away with the Glee 6 Piece Mini Kit ($24). I already have a couple of Sephora by OPI polishes (love, LOVE Let’s do Lunch), and I think OPI’s polishes tend to be pretty sturdy when used with a good base and top coat. At a minimum, I figured I’d be getting polishes that would resist chips.
Sephora by OPI Glee Collection: The 6-Piece Mini Kit
Doesn’t the box look all Christmassy? I wouldn’t be surprised if it was originally slated for a Christmas release, because I think even the jewel-toned polish colors have a holiday feel.
A nod to gray and/or purple, aka the colors du jour, might have given the kit a springier vibe, but OPI and Sephora did include the shades in the larger collection (Mash Up is an opalescent gray, and Hell to the No is a shimmery royal purple with golden glitter).
The wee bottles in the mini-kit feel a touch too small for my hands, but their fantastic brush makes up for it. It’s wide and applies color smoothly, allowing me to cover each entire nail in just two or three swipes.
The creams (Miss Bossy Pants and Slushied) and glitters (Celibacy Club and Gleek Out) take three layers to reach full opacity, while the shimmers (Sue vs. Shue and Express Yourself to Yourself) take two.
Have a look, and let me know if you see anything here that makes you sing…

I like Slushied, Miss Bossy Pants and Express Yourself to Yourself, but I think that’s because I’ve ready seen these colors from China Glaze. Hard core Gleeks might still want to snatch the set, though, because it’s always fun to paint your nails while you’re watching your favorite show. 🙂
PRICE: $24 for a set of 6 mini-polishes

Are you hip to Southland?
GEEZ! I’m kinda dragging today because I stayed up late last night to watch a few episodes of Southland, my new favorite cop show. It follows a group of officers with the Los Angeles Police Department and reminds me a little of Law and Order: SVU. I really think the characters are THAT solid and interesting.
Detective Lydia Adams, played by actress Regina King (remember her from Jerry Maguire?), is probably my favorite.
And I can’t believe girlfriend is 40! Damn, I’ll have whatever she’s having, yo.
Of course, the show has the requisite eye candy, as well, via rookie cop Ben Sherman, played by Benjamin McKenzie…
I’ve never been pulled over before (knock on wood!), but if/when I am, let’s hope it’s by Officer Ben.
Anywho, I hope your Thursday’s chugging along. Anything new to report?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Aaah I adore Sephora by OPI polish… it’s a great collaboration :]
As for the whole Glee thing- I adored the first season, but the second didn’t keep with a plot line. It was more like Rachel singing a Streisand song every episode and gospel choirs appearing out of midair in a high school auditorium. Then they kicked Kurt off to private school, and my desire for Glee was certainly dimmed. :[
It just seems like it’s jumping the shark to me; it doesn’t make sense anymore (at least in the beginning it was only semi-ridiculous)! However, these polishes are cute. Celibacy Club is a hilarious nail polish name… these ones seem to go with the first season, as you said! Overall, I think I’ll skip this one, even though it’s definitely marketed to my age group!
Karen says
I loved the first season too. I actually don’t watch it anymore… it feels to me like the show revolves around the music instead of having the plot drive it forward.
You know what’s also missing from this list? A polish named “Puck’s Guitar.”
Beth says
Lee Press On Nails! OMG! What a blast from the past – I can still recite the commercial – “Introducing Lee Press On Nails, they press on in seconds! Simply press on Lee Super Stick tabs and press on Lee Press On Nails!” I used to fight with those things…
I do like the collection – will probably pick it up to share with the teenaged daughter.
Haven’t watched Southland but have heard it was good – might have to check it out!
Karen says
“Easy on, easy off. Use them again and again!”
I found the commercial on youtube… I can’t believe I still remember the words, HAHA!

Happy Thursday, girlie! I’m so glad it’s Thursday because it’s like Friday for me!
I like the looks of Express Yourself to Yourself but I think I have something pretty similar…
Karen says
Happy Thursday to you too! I remember China Glaze doing something to that color a while back… it would be good for summer, dontcha think?
Tiffany says
totally perfect for summer!
Karen says
I want to wear them with my yellow platform sandals and a white dress. Sigh… just have to be patient for the warm weather!
What are you up to tonight?
Tiffany says
sounds super pretty! I can’t wait for warm weather either!
I am just chillin. happily playing on my laptop since it was out of commission while my hubby fixed it. I ate some 7 grain kashi frozen waffles with peanut butter for my evening snack, and it occurred to me to try nutella on waffles… have you ever tried this? inquiring minds wanna know! what are you up to tonight?
Karen says
I HAVE AND IT IS DELICIOUS.
You know what sounds weird but is totally good? Frozen waffles topped with peanut butter and raisins. It sounds odd but it just works.
I’m about to work out (blah) and then El Hub and I might go to the movies. He has tomorrow off, so today’s kinda like a Friday night.
Tiffany says
mmm, I think I have to try with nutella. I contemplated putting choc chips on top of my peanut butter but decided that would defeat the purpose of trying to make a healthy-ish snack, lol.
have a good workout and think of the fun you will have at the movies afterward!
Karen says
It’s really delicious. Have you ever tried it on wheat toast? That’s damn good too.
So I managed to get my cardio on but now I’m too tired to go to the movies… story of my life, LOL!
Tiffany says
mmm, nutella. yeah, that is my usual – on wheat toast or these arnold wheat sandwich thins. I toast them first also. yummmmm.
lol, that would be me too – I can never do anything after working out other than shower and bum around. maybe you can make it to the movies this weekend! what did you want to see?
AnieJ says
I don’t think I’m feeling these, even though I like Sephora and Glee just fine. I personally like to hand pick each shade and have it be something I want to wear a whole lot. Maybe Slushied or Sue vs. Shue, but that’s because I’m on the hunt for blues….
Karen says
Shue vs. Shue is a nice enough blue, but I feel like I’ve seen it before… it’s pigment rich, which is a plus.
Makeup Morsels says
ohh I love Slushied and Celibacy Club! I never really got on the Glee bandwagon. I watched a couple of episodes, and then I got a little bit bored with it.
Karen says
You have to watch the first season at the very least. It’s really good…
kana says
I’ve never seen gLee but I do like a few of these colors! Express yourself to yourself and Slushie were just screaming at me! I’ll hopefully get to a Sephora this weekend and have a look at them. 🙂 Have you ever played with a konad stamper Karen? I have been completely obsessed with it! You gotta at least google it and have a look see… if you have, isn’t it fun? hehe 😛
Karen says
I’ve heard/seen Konad in action but have yet to try it. Do you use yours often?
DonnaN says
Oh, I hope my Sephora has these this weekend……will be fun to see “in person”
Karen says
They just hit shelves so hopefully your store will have them! The one near my house never gets stuff early, so I was kinda surprised to see it there yesterday. 🙂
Tracy says
The only good thing about this season is Darren Criss. Love him. But the show is just all music and no real plot this year. Each show is like watching a music video. Not impressed at all. And it looks like they’re about to butcher some MJ on Sunday.
I saw these yesterday and thought-meh, like the show lately.
Karen says
I agree with the whole lack of plot thing. The first episode of the season seemed promising but I pretty much stopped watching after that. The show barely makes any sense to me…
Sally says
Sue vs. Shue looks GORGEOUS on the nail and Gleek out looks amazing in the bottle. 🙂
Karen says
I like the dark blue — it’s so moody. 🙂
Melodie says
I feel like Slushied topped with Celibacy Club might look more like an actual Slushie…for the most part these colors just seem sorta overdone, which is a little disappointing.
Re: Southland…never watched it, but absolutely LOVED Ben McKenzie when he was on the OC. Does he do the whole strong-but-silent, totally-a-marshamallow-inside act on this show too?
Karen says
I didn’t know he was on the OC. I missed that train when it was on TV…
Yes, he plays the somewhat mysterious strong-but-silent type. The ladies are always fallin’ for Officer Ben on the show.
lia says
OMG Benjamin McKenzie! I don’t think I could watch Southland without thinking of him as Ryan from The OC… but maybe I’ll take a peek anyway 🙂
Glee’s not really my thing- don’t mind the musical/singing/dancing aspect of it, but the storyline is just too cheesy for me… and that’s saying something, considering that I have Season 1 of The OC memorized. The nail polishes aren’t really doing anything for me either – I feel like I’ve seen all those colors before (except maybe Express yourself to yourself)… cute display, tho.
Karen says
You should give it a try. The characters are very interesting and relatable.
I think I might be the only person who’s never seen one episode of the OC, LOL!
P.S. I like cheesy, too.
lia says
haha, you should definitely check out The OC then! First season only (maybe, just maybe, the first half of the second season) – it was quite awesome in its cheesyness and high school drama.
Karen says
I actually really love the teen tv genre. When it’s good, it’s really good.
Okay, I’ll see if I can get it on Netflix… It’ll give me something to look forward to when I’m all caught up with Southland.
Elle says
“I’ve never been pulled over before (knock on wood!), but if/when I am, let’s hope it’s by Officer Ben.”
MMMHMMMM. I second that. HAWT.
I’m kinda tired of the Glee marketing…and I have to say the whole Ryan Murphy vs. Kings of Leon thing kinda left a bad taste in my mouth. Aaaand the show is kinda ‘meh’ to me lately with the plot lines and guest stars (although Chris Colfer is doing a great job this season). The polishes are cute but I never really look for nail polish at Sephora.
Patty says
Oh man! I’ve loved Benjamin McKenzie since his days on The OC (yeah yeah, we all have our guilty pleasures).
I think the only polish calling my name is Slushied… and even then, I’m gonna try to find a cheaper dupe before plopping down the $10 for it. It’s just so… bright. Which is why I love it.
Karen says
It’s fun and vibrant. It should look great on toes, yes?
Melissa says
I was just in Sephora today and did not see the Glee collection. They did however have the Urban Ballerina nail polishes and I ended up getting “Break a Leg-Warmer.” Metro Chic was one of my favorites until my bottle got all thick and gloopy and it just looked gross on the nails. Hopefully this new one stays good for a while! It’s such a nice dark gray.
Karen says
What a cute name! I have Metro Chic too, btw. I haven’t used it in a while… I hope it’s not goopy.
Melissa says
The collection has a lot of cute names “The way tu-tu his heart” and “Let’s Plie” but overall the colors were nice, muted which I like, but not very original. “Whose Spinning Tonight” is an opaque metallic grape which I definitely want to try next time I go to Sephora, which stood out somewhat among the others.
Melissa says
I hope it’s not goopy too! I hate when that happens with polishes, especially pretty ones like Metro Chic. And I find that keeping them in the fridge or adding the teeniest amount of nail polish remover just makes it worse 🙁
Solangel says
Slushied and Sue vs. Schue = love! Celibacy Club would look so awesome over Slushied 😀
Rita says
Southland is airing soon here too, and I’ll be watching it for sure. I have not been watching Glee though, but the polishes seem quite nice.
gio says
I hope this set will be available here, the colors look beautiful!
Jessica says
There is already a Glee fragrance. Three of them to be exact.

Nina says
the names are very interesting!
Kim says
Totally laughed at the Lee Press On Nails comment. I think everyone in our general age range had one of those disasters! HAHA! I like Miss Bossy Pants and Sue vs Shue best, and totally agree that this was most likely slated for a Christmas release. I’m sure you know this, but Coty bought OPI (in Nov 2010). I’d expect to see a lot more celebrity collaborations. OPI was clearly going that route anyway with the Disney movies and Katy Perry but, now that they’re owned by Coty, I’d be shocked if they didn’t do even more.
Ru says
Southland is a great show! I thought I was the only one in the world watching it. And Officer Ben… cute for a short guy 🙂
Paintthetownscarlet.wordpress.com says
There are so many nail franchises these days I just can’t keep up – Katy Perry, Bieber, now Glee…what next?! Sue Vs shue is lovely.
Chris25 says
Gleek out reminds me of Leaf Him At The Altar.
Instant Karma (formerly L) says
LOL, I would wear “My Shop Teacher Has No Thumbs” regardless of what color it was — but only on eight of my fingers.
