Deep thoughts from the males of Casa MBB:
- “You don’t need to wear lipgloss to bed, sweetie.” — El Hub
- “Meow. Mrrrroooow.” (Translated: “Woman, you must provide gravy for me to pose for you. Check the contract.”) — Tabs
- “I just don’t see how wearing mascara while you’re on the treadmill is a necessary thing.” — El Hub
There are soooo many things dudes don’t get — like why women need 10 pairs of black shoes (HELLO!), or why it’s completely rational to wear mascara during a workout.
What can I say? I feel less Uncle Fester if I’m huffing and puffing with a lil’ bit of eye makeup on. 🙂
For today’s treadmill sesh I wore Estee Lauder’s new Sumptuous Bold Waterproof Mascara ($18.50, available in brown and black).
Aboard the treadmill
Sumptuous Waterproof (I have it in black) totally kills when it comes to lifting the lashes and keeping a curl; eyes look w i d e and awake with it on.
More reasons to like Estee Lauder Sumptuous Waterproof Bold Volume…
- Deep, rich color
- Smooth, non-clumping formula
- Lashes feel soft and light, not crispy or heavy (dontcha hate that?), with it on
- With a good eye makeup remover like Bliss Lid + Lash Wash, removal is a cinch; no scrubbing neccessary
And I gotta give props to Sumptuous Waterproof for resisting smudging and flaking.
To see how well it performs in the waterproof department, I put it to the test today, popping on three layers before I went running on the treadmill.
Nekkid lashes
One layer of Estee Lauder Sumptuous Waterproof Bold
Two layers of Estee Lauder Sumptuous Waterproof Bold
Three layers of Estee Lauder Sumptuous Waterproof Bold
Three miles and 30 minutes later, I was exhausted and dripping in sweat, but Sumptuous Waterproof was still going strong. I saw a tiny bit of flaking along my lower lash line, but other than that it looked darn near perfect — no smudging or black color beneath my eyes, and my lashes still looked lifted and curled.
The stuff has a lot of good things going for it, but I can’t help but wonder why EL named it “Bold Volume.” Yes, it gives a noticeable boost in volume, but I think they could’ve gone bolder… I’m a big lash kind of lady, though, so it might actually be bold enough for girls who prefer a less RuPaul lash. Still, it does the trick when I want natural lashes with a little bit of oomph, and that counts for something.
TIP: For a bigger, more dramatic lash look, try layering Sumptuous Bold on top of your favorite thickening mascara.
I wouldn’t mind if Estee Lauder lowered the $18.50 price, but at least it’s not in the $30 price range. If you’re looking for a waterproof mascara to create natural-looking lashes with BAM, you might want to give it a go. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B+

had the normal one of this but it ran out 🙁 I got it really cheap in a gift set in France and I fell in love with it. I thought it was brilliant and did everything I wanted from a mascara except that it faked a bit so i would love to try the waterproof one!
Karen says
Yeah… I ended up liking this much more than I thought I would! I hope you can find the waterproof version!

This looks nice, but not in an OMG what an amazing mascara way! I think a couple of drugstore mascaras can achieve better or similar results. That said, this is nice anyway 😀
Hope you have a nice Friday!

Hey Karen, what mascara would you recommend? I also really like the “false eyelash” effect, but haven’t really found a mascara that does it without flaking, smudging, etc. (I’ve tried Diorshow Blackout and really liked the way it looked, but it ended up smudging on me)
Thanks!

Clearly, I’m not Karen, but the more comments, the merrier, right?
I’ve got to say that when I want to go all out with the eyelash drama, I reach for Lancome’s Hypnose Drama. I’ve tried a million different mascaras ranging from Maybelline to YSL, and unless something really impresses me, I won’t buy it more than once. I wasn’t pleased enough with Diorshow (although I never tried Blackout) to rebuy, but the next time I go to Sephora, I’m going to leave with Hypnose Drama in my shopping bag for the third time.

lolll the boys in my english class were talking about differences between lip balm, lip gloss, and lipstick. they came to the conclusion that lipstick is for old lady prostitutes. I don’t know how they got there. Anyways, this mascara seems like it would be very good for an everyday natural look, and good to know it holds up!

My cousin bought the Estee Lauder perfume (I didn’t even know they had perfume), and the lady gave her some sample including this mascara, and she gave it to me =D. I’m gonna try this out once I use up my current mascaraS

Thanks for the review, Karen! With my asian lashes, I only wear waterproof mascara (Shu Uemura, MUFE Smoky Lash, MAC Splashproof). It IS a mystery to me also why they call this one Bold Volume when it doesn’t add that much volume. I’m happy to hear it makes your lashes soft.
I do find many waterproof mascaras are this way – they may lengthen and curl but my lashes still look skimpy!
Still, I’ll try this one too because the price isn’t bad.

Ooh, me likey! A bit more volume would be nice, but hey, I’ll take what I can get when it comes to waterproof mascaras!
Haha, I wear full eye makeup to the gym sometimes, just to feel a little more glam when I’m red-faced and covered in sweat 😛

I honestly felt the Turbo Lash is very similar to this particular mascara – same wand, same formula, really. And as much as I enjoyed using the EE Turbolash, it was not worth the extra bucks. This Sumptuous mascara is a much better buy at $20!
And thank you so much for the YouTube friend request recently. I’m addicted to your blog and check it at least twice a day so it was a wonderful surprise that see that you had stumbled upon my channel!

You have a lovely view from your treadmill! I never use mine — my legs are too damn long and I’m afraid I’ll fall off of it!
I am unsure of why Estee Lauder used the word “bold” in the title of this mascara. I’m not seeing much boldness here.

Interesting …. might want to give that a go because I am out of mascara. As in there is this one last tube of Maybelline Full & Soft that im using because everything else dried out on me!!!

Karen – every waterproof mascara I use clumps after about 3 uses. Any advice? I don’t have the problem with ordinary mascaras, but for some reason every brand of waterproof I try either does nothing for my sparse little lashes, or clumps up so badly you’d think I got insects trapped in there….love your blog 🙂

I love mascara that allows you to achieve beautiful, long, well defined dark lashes that make your eyes pop, without looking heavy with mascara, mascara is waterproof and does not smudge or flake and there are NO clumps of mascara in your lashes. I like the lashes to be separated, not stuck together in pieces. I like it when you are approached by strangers who compliment you on your gorgeous eyes, mainly achieved by a superb mascara. So you think this mascara can’t possibly exist? Well, it does. I have tried every mascara out there from drugstore to top shelf quality but the one that can achieve everything you could ever want in a mascar is Lorac’s waterproof mascara, which comes in a black, blcak(My staple make up product) and in a gorgeous blue black. The reason it works so well is because of the way the brush is constructed. One side of the brush is similar to a regular mascara brush but the other side is more of a comb. This combing of the lashes prevents the clumps and keeps the lashes separated. Although your lashes are bold, the mascara doesn;t feel hard or brittle on the lashes. Lastly, the mascara is waterproof and won’t smear, smudge or come off until you take it off, which only requires a light touch and a good make up remover for they eyes. At $20 a piece, I think it’s a great buy..

I like this, and I’m not usually one for a volumizing mascara. They usually clump on me, but they looked pretty good on you! However, I definitely wouldn’t pay the $30!!

Thanks for testing it, it looks great!

really i think this mascara is amazing but i’ve only used the regular sumptrous. I have scrawny lashes so this helps me alot but i use it with a las primer/booster underneath. i’ve used maybelline, lancome hypnose and fefinicials and this is the one that gives me the most lash oomph!
