I know it’s a little unusual to start a Dior review with a question about MAC, but here goes: do you do MAC Satin Taupe eyeshadow? It’s a shimmery purplish taupe in MAC’s permanent line and a staple in a great many makeup bags (I it too).
If it’s also a favorite of yours, take a gander at the new Dior Misty Mauve 5-Colour Eye Palette.
This $58 princess is one of two new eye palettes Dior released with their fall collection (the other being Pink Design), and it shimmies onto lids with five cool-toned shades — a shimmery light pink, a shimmery white, a shimmery purplish taupe, a matte taupe and a shimmery mauve — that MAC Satin Taupe should get along with quite nicely.
Misty doesn’t need the help, though. She can also stand on her own, and when I slipped her on my lids this morning, I marveled at how well the included colors complement each other, blending sans muss or fuss.
Methinks it’s one of the more user-friendly palettes (especially if you like shimmer) to hail from the House of Dior in many moons.
When it comes to shimmer, Misty Mauve has it in spaces. Dior did add one matte shadow to keep fans on their toes…but the other four shimmer like sunlight through glass (borderline frosty even).

Wearing Misty Mauve
Dior may have priced the palette out of reach for many, but $58 isn’t totally unreasonable for a good department store quint (here’s one from Guerlain’s fall line for $84!).
I really like these colors for what they are (shimmery AND wearable), and I applaud Dior for everything except the price. If you wear mauves, purples and taupes on a regular basis, Misty Mauve might be worth a closer look. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B+

Martha says
Stop it lady!! I had convinced myself I didn’t need this until now.
Karen says
You’re too cute. Hmm, could you wear these colors on the regular? Like, maybe 3-4 times a week?
Tiffany says
I loooove satin taupe! And what’s on your cheeks in that pic?!
dani@callitbeauty says
i second this question!
Karen says
Hey ladies!
That’s NARS Sin blush working her magic.
If anybody wants to peep the review, here it is:

Tiffany says
Yay! Already have it, lol 🙂
Karen says
LOL, I know that feeling well. You’re like, “Oooh, ooh, ooh…” and then you realize it’s already in your stash!
Tami says
I was about to ask the same question lol. Sin just makes your skin glow. How do you think it will fare on NC45 skin? Maybe if I’m good my hubby will get it for my birthday next week:D
Sherri says
So pretty, I want 🙂
Karen says
Hi Sherri,
It’s pretty, yah? Do you think you might pick it up?
*jen says
Really pretty! Still, not enough for me to fork over that money. I think I have to wait for The Perfect Quint. 🙂
Karen says
I’m betting there’s a quint out there just waiting for you to find her. It’s only a matter of time before the universe reveals it to ya…
LOL, sometimes I realize how much of a makeup weirdo I really am. That was one of ’em.
Agnes says
oooooooo so pretty! but the price tag’s way out of my budget 🙁 however… i am very interested in MAC satin taupe 😀 thanks for posting, will definately check that out! 😀
Karen says
Hi Agnes,
Satin Taupe’s a great color. I have a lot of friends that swear by it!
Amber says
I think this quint was made for you! It’s probably a little too cool for me. Just as well!
Karen says
I’m sure we can find something to tempt you in the meantime. 🙂
BTW, have you had a chance to play with your Naked palette yet?
Amber says
I swatched everything last night and almost brought it with me this morning, but decided to hold off on using it until tomorrow morning when I’m not trying to hurry and get to work. I’m going out of town for the weekend and think I may bring that and no other shadows!
Karen says
I think you’ll be covered! 🙂
Where are you headed this weekend? Any place fun?
Amber says
We’re going to Austin for my mom’s birthday and to see where my parents’ new house is being built!
Karen says
Sounds like fun. 🙂 Happy Birthday to your mom! Have you already picked up a b-day present for her?
Amber says
We picked up some pretty plumeria jewelry for her in Hawaii!
Karen says
Ooh, nice! She will love it, for sure. Hawaiian jewelry is so distinct. I wrote a story a few years back on it and there’s a lot of rich history behind the pieces.
Steph B says
Absolutely lovely. This might have to be my first Dior quint.
Karen says
🙂 I hope it will be!
I’ve been meaning to tell you that I love your new glasses! I’m kinda like the gray/pink combo myself…
Steph B says
Apparently I’m on a return kick. The glasses are going back. They were uncomfortable. I had them adjusted but still no joy. So so sad as they were so dang cute. Was going to give them a few more days but as I was walking home yesterday I passed another optician and a pair in their window grabbed me. Smaller, lighter frame in a dark, translucent green. I pick them up tomorrow.
Karen says
Hmm, maybe something’s going on with the stars? I’ve noticed that sometimes the universe is just not on my side when it comes to shopping.
Comfort is a must, so I hope these new ones feel better.
Steph B says
Yeah, I think the universe is telling me to take a shopping break. I weighed both glasses and the new ones were 50% heavier then my old ones – I think that was the problem. They don’t seem that much bigger so I was surprised to see that.
Karen says
Thanks to you I’m now on a glasses kick. I kinda like these cat eye-esque ones from Bebe:
http://www.framesdirect.com/framesfp/Bebe-lctimb/r.html
Steph B says
Those rock! I tried on a pair of retro cat’s eyes frames and loved them, but not for everyday. I could see getting a cheaper fun second pair. I wound up getting this brand http://www.prodesigndenmark.com/Default.aspx?ID=126&GroupID= frame #1665 in petrol — a dark green with hints of blue and grey. They felt great the minute I put them on. I think they may have messed up the lenses on the other glasses.
Vesna says
I wonder how these look on NW15/20 🙂
I love this palette too, perhaps even more than the Pink Design palette. And though they are pricey, I think these are worth every penny. 🙂
Karen says
Hey Vesna,
If I can track down my NW20 model I’ll put additional swatches up showing it on lighter skin. 🙂
Vesna says
Thank you Karen! 🙂 <3
Karen says
Sho’ nuff, Vesna!
Ashley Nicole says
Beautiful! I love the Dior 5 colour palettes – the colour applies so nicely!
Karen says
I love them too! Do you have a favorite?
amy says
The is a gorgeous quint of neutrals from Dior and I do like the majority of Dior’s eyeshadow sets. I really like the blush you are wearing Karen, what is it?
Karen says
Hi Amy,
Happy almost-Friday! That blush is the beautiful NARS Sin. If you want to read a review, here’s the link:

Madelynn says
I’ve never been able to afford Dior quints, but I always love their collections and quality. I might have to start saving for this one. :]
Karen says
Hi Madelynn,
It’s worth putting away a few bucks for if you wear purples often. 🙂
Nina says
Wow, in the pan it’s really meh for me, but on your lids it just looks gorgeous! Wow! And did you have a hair cut? Because I love your hair in this pic.
Karen says
Hi Nina,
Thanks for noticing! I recently lightened up my highlights. 🙂
kristine says
Hi Karen!
You got highlights didn’t you?! It looks great on you! looks summery and beachy =) do you think this quint looks “bruisey” at all? I tend to have that problem with purpley colors.
Karen says
Hi Kristine,
I got ’em a few weeks back, but I think they just finally started lightening up enough to show up in pics. 🙂
As for the quint, it depends on what types of purples play well with your skin. I know for me purples with red or burgundy tones give me that bruised look, so I didn’t really have trubs with these colors. These are more violet/lilac, so if you wear those colors well it could look great on you!
Lindsay says
Dang…. I want this one soooooo badly!
Karen says
Hi Lindsay,
I hope you get to play with it soon!
makeup morsels says
I think Dior has the best eyeshadow formula in terms of pigmentation and blendability. I’m glad they included a matte shadow in this, I haven’t seen them do any mattes in a long, long time.
Karen says
They seem to do either just mattes or just shimmers. It’s nice to have the different textures mixed in!
Vonvon says
Another pretty Dior palette with my favorite colors.
Likey the look you did with it!
Karen says
Thanks, Vonvon. 🙂
snoopysteph says
I neeeed, I neeeed! Love the colors in this one! I already own 2 quints (Petal Shine & Night Butterfly) and I need to pinch my pennies and REALLY convince myself before I can invest in another.
Karen says
I looove both of those, btw!
Advah says
Oh no! I’m a sucker for anything mauve/purpley even though I can’t figure out how to wear those colours without making my eyes look bruised!
Hmmmm I’m slowly convincing myself I need that one and Pink Design. Like, NEED. Duh.
Except I got Dior’s Twilight palette (cheap at the airport 🙂 ) last summer and still haven’t managed to use it, the colours are so light it’s like I’m not wearing any.. I might be missing a step..
Karen says
Hi Advah,
Have you tried wetting your brush head first with a fixer like MAC Fix+? That might help enrich the colors.
Marina says
YES, this palette is beautiful! I think I should really check it out, thanks for the review 🙂
Karen says
Hi Marina,
You’re welcome! I hope you like it.
Kim says
These look great on you! You’re right that your highlights are starting to lighten up; I noticed in this pic too. Very nice! 🙂 Btw, I’ve been meaning to say (again) that your skin is looking fab. Any secrets to share? I thought I had banished breakouts for good, but alas, had a little set-back this week. I’m too old for this! 🙂
Karen says
Thanks! I’ve been drinking a ton of water and trying to work out more, which always helps. Also I’ve been rotating between a few different skin treatments: benzoyl peroxide, the new Clinique Skin Care Even Better Serum and prescription Retin-A.
Also I finally found a combo that photographs really well — Laura Mercier Oil-Free Tinted Moisturizer topped with a 50/50 mix of MAC Prep+Prime and MAC Blot buffed in with a kabuki brush.
Kim says
Thanks for the tips! It’s definitely working for you! I’ve been curious about the Retin-A for a while because of the skin clearing and the anti-aging claims. It may finally be time to give it a try.
Nina says
Have I just met Dior palette number 2??? 🙂
Karen says
Ooh, la la! Maybe it is!
If you end up adopting it you have to promise to give it love often!
Nina says
I promise to love it and often! Im about 99.9% that you have just introduced me to Dior Number 2! 😀
evo says
i totally missed the dior counter when i was in seattle over the weekend. 🙁 now i have to wait a couple weeks for it to arrive in canada 🙁
Karen says
Oh no! Hopefully the new stuff will get to you sooner than later. Do you think you might pick this up?
Marina says
I’ve been lemming this quint since the first promo pics popped up on the net! I love taupes and purple, this one looks perfect!
Shannon says
I have lots of palettes, lots of eye shadow – but this makes me DROOOOOL!!!
I must stay out of Nordstrom.
Pinch says
I love how you’re wearing it! Ack, all these pretty quints and palettes! I want this one, Chanel Enigma, UD Naked AND I bet I could fill a fifth MAC 15 pan in 30 seconds at the counter!
Sigh.
Joey Chong says
I recently bought it but haven’t got the chance to explore this beautiful palette yet.
Can’t wait to use it =)
Sarah says
This quint is so pretty on you. I think I’m going to get it this weekend! We’re going to Pittsburgh and there’s a Nordies there! May I ask how you applied this quint? Did you use the middle color as a liner? Sarah
Andreea says
You know there is 6 Gramm in it and in Chanel only 1,something?! You get some powder for at least, but Estee lauder has even more value.
I found the colours very nice and wearable, but also rather boring.
